Jared Zystro is a research and education director at the Organic Seed Alliance. Jared is based in Arcada, California. I invited Jared onto this episode so he can tell you about the Organic Seed Growers Conference in Corvallis, Oregon that is taking place from February 26th to March 1st, 2025. I first went to this conference in 2008 and it was the single most important learning experience to my seed career. I also made so many great friends and contacts that have followed me throughout all my CD endeavors. And I think that you would probably enjoy an experience like this also. So in this episode, Jared and I talk about what is happening at this year's conference and how you can participate not only in person, but also virtually if you can't make it to Corvallis. Jared and I talk about more than just the conference in this episode. We start with Jared's seed story and how it went from working summers on vegetable farms to ultimately getting a PhD in plant breeding and plant genetics from the University of Wisconsin Madison. And we finished with a deep dive into growing quinoa on both a larger commercial scale using a combine and a smaller scale with manual techniques. Dan Brisebois has over 20 years of market farming and seed growing experience as a founding member of Tourne-Sol Cooperative farm in Quebec, Canada. In this interview and discussion of his new book, The Seed Farmer, we hear how his interest in seed growing goes all the way back to the beginning of his farming career. Now, he can tell us from experience what it's like to grow many seed crops, since roughly half of the farm income derives from seed sales, with the other half coming from a 500-member CSA.This interview and Dan's book cover the practicalities of how to grow a seed crop, whether for your own use or for sale. Topics covered include choosing a crop, pollination, isolation distances, inbreeders vs outcrossers, harvest and processing for good germination, storage and more! This interview gives an overview of the differences between growing for a crop of fresh vegetables vs. for seed. You can plan for growing seed in as little or as much detail as you can plan for growing any other crop. Up until now, I've been encouraging you to slow down and take it easy. Start your seed growing small and learn from it. Don't worry about the details too much. But eventually, when you start feeling more comfortable growing seed, you're going to want to plan your seed crops more precisely. This is the 5th and final weekly episode of a mini-series all about the basics you need to know so you can plan your first seed crop for the coming growing season. I would love to know how you like these mini-episodes. Send me a DM or an email to tell me what you think - is this a format you'd like me to repeat in the future? Mentioned in the show... Crop rotation plays a key role in sustainable production practices. There are many factors for growers to consider in their short and long-term crop planning. Western Ag professional agrologist Edgar Hammermeister says long-term crop planning is necessary for pest management and soil health. Edgar will discuss the costs and benefits of crop choices based on a number of factors that impact agronomy and ultimately, long term profitability. The Saskatchewan Government said it will spend $4 billion in new irrigation infrastructure at Lake Diefenbaker, a project that has been in the discussion stage for decades. The province plans to spend $22.5 million for preliminary engineering and initial construction.Once in full operation an additional 500,000 acres will be irrigated which is double the current total. Saskatchewan Irrigation Projects Association board chair Aaron Gray is excited about the announcement. He will share plans and discuss the potential for economic growth from the province's biggest ever infrastructure project to date. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today's episode is a BEST OF episode, which is a replay of a previously aired episode. Enjoy! FSFS #13 It's June 9th and the farm is in full production. As you heard last week a big part of that production comes from greens. Greens that are being cut and cut and cut. That's resulting in a lot of product that is being sold to restaurants, distributors, and farmers market customers. This week we talk about delivering that product to restaurant customers and how that day looks from harvest to delivery. We also talk a lot about crop planning. How do you know what to plant now so you have it harvest later, and how do you know that you will have a market to sell that product to later. Dan Brisebois of Tourne Sol Farm joins me to talk about small scale vegetable seed growing. Dan has grown seed on his farm for over 10 years and sells that seed via his own seed company and to other seed retailers. It's a lucrative business model that might just be a fit as a side business or an add on business for a small farm. Dan Brisebois was a founding member of Tourne-Sol Cooperative Farm, begun in 2004. Located just outside of Montreal, Quebec, Tourne-Sol is an employee-owned cooperative with five members, engaged in about seven acres of vegetable and vegetable seed production. Dan provides an eye-opening discussion of his experience as part of a cooperative farming venture, including their use of Holistic Management to guide decision-making with regards to both profitability and quality of life. We dig into some of the logistical details of how the Tourne-Sol farmers plan their business and divide responsibilities, as well as how they make operational decisions together and how they assign leadership responsibilities. And, Dan lets us in on the ways that being part of a co-op allows them to work less than many of the farmers they know, both day-to-day and seasonally. Dan manages garlic and seed production at Tourne Sol, and we discuss the details of seed selection and processing, as well as the planning and cropping adjustments that seed production requires. We also spend some time discussing crop planning on the vegetable farm, as Dan is a co-author of Crop Planning for Organic Vegetable Growers. The Farmer to Farmer Podcast is generously supported by Vermont Compost Company.
