A talk with Daniel Whiteson, a professor of physics and astronomy, about free will, with a focus on what the effects in one's life are when one doesn't believe in free will. Topics discussed: Our thoughts on why we think free will is unlikely to exist; psychological and emotional aspects of living without a belief in free will; the anxiety and even anger that some people can have about the idea that we lack free will; the idea that a lack of belief in free will can be part of a spiritual, positive way of experiencing the world; and more. You have probably heard that poinsettia plants are poisonous to people and pets. Really? How poisonous? Can you die from eating them or what? Should you be concerned and keep them out of your home? This episode begins with an explanation of just how dangerous poinsettias are – and are not. https://www.stranges.com/are-poinsettias-poisonous/ Our keen human instincts have helped us survive all these years. However, some of those instincts are not so practical in today's modern world. This is according to evolutionary biologist Dr. Rebecca Heiss, author of the book Instinct: Rewire Your Brain with Science-Backed Solutions to Increase Productivity and Achieve Success (https://amzn.to/3oxbQTq). Rebecca joins me to discuss how instincts such as the instinct for self-deception and variety and the fear of others can really sabotage your success. She also offers strategies to help override those instincts when you need to. What's inside a black hole? What exactly is a multiverse? At what point will the sun stop burning? These are just a few of the fascinating questions I explore with Daniel Whiteson, professor of physics at UC Irvine and author of the book Frequently Asked Questions About the Universe (https://amzn.to/3oCeTtR). Listen as Daniel takes important and complex concepts about the universe and makes them interesting and understandable. Your sense of touch is more complicated than you realize. What you touch and how it feels can actually alter the way you think. In this captivating episode of Shape Shorts, host Tony Pitucco sits down with the brilliant particle physicist and esteemed professor of physics at UC Irvine, Daniel Whiteson. They discuss his joint venture with Jorge Cham and the story of how they began collaborating to communicate complex scientific concepts through the use of cartoons, making science engaging and accessible to all! One of the most intriguing topics explored is whether mathematics serves as the universal language that reveals the secrets of the cosmos or if it is an internal construct of the human mind. They delve into the concept of the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics in the natural sciences and explore the profound role it plays in understanding the universe. The conversation naturally turns to the enigmatic realm of quantum physics and the ever-essential right-hand rule in physics. The beauty and symmetry present in physics is unmissable and as the discussion deepens, Tony and Daniel tackle the profound philosophical question of why humanity finds beauty in the laws that govern the universe. They embrace the human element in science and acknowledge the significance of specialization in the field. If you're curious about the universe's mysteries, the intriguing role of mathematics, the captivating stories of scientific discovery, and the profound beauty and symmetry that underpin it all, this episode is a must-listen. * Now offering workshops!

This is the type of chill questions that we're all asking ourselves from time to time — you know, when we're sitting on the beach. This is also the kind of questions Daniel Whiteson loves to talk about in his podcast, “Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe”, co-hosted with Jorge Cham, the author of PhD comics. The idea that humans don't have free will, that we don't have any control of our lives, can be a scary or depressing one for some people. This is a talk with Daniel Whiteson, physics professor of UC Irvine, about why he thinks free will is unlikely, and about the psychological and emotional impacts that can be associated with believing or not believing in free will.

Ever wonder what’s out there in the universe, but tired of being bored to death by bookworm scientists? Well today I’m speaking with Daniel Whiteson. He is a professor of physics and astronomy at The University of California, Irvine and is the co-author, along with Jorge Cham, of my favorite physics and astronomy book of all time called We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe.I wanted to have Daniel on the show because in his book he blew me away by his ability to not sound like a scientist but instead speak in everyday terms while explaining complex stuff like dark matter, dark energy and other spooky things lurking out there in the cosmos. In this interview Daniel shared how much we don’t know about the universe (which is a ton), the likelihood we could find life right here in our solar system, the 3 particles that make up just about everything (including you and me), what is dark matter and dark energy and how we know it exists, he touched on quantum mechanics, and much more.LINKS:Book: We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown UniverseWebsite: http://phdcomics.com/noidea/Podcast: Daniel and Jorge Explain the Universe Contact: UCI Twitter: @DanielWhiteson---I’d love to hear from you! This program originally aired on May 9, 2017. What is time? Why does it always seem to move forward? Why is the earth made of matter and not of anti-matter? Are there really just three dimensions? Are we alone in the Universe? How big is the Universe? The short answer is, "we have no idea," and that's the point of a new book by Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson. During this hour of River to River , host Ben Kieffer talks with Cham and Whiteson about their new book We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe.
As you know, Joshua and Jason like to take a detour from whisky now and again. In previous episodes the boys interviewed Garth Ennis (writer of the cult classic comics Preacher and The Boys, now major TV shows on AMC and Amazon, respectively), Adal Rifai (comedian and Chuntttttt from Hello from the Magic Tavern), and Matthew Rhys (Emmy Award winning actor from The Americans, The Post, and A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). Today's detour takes us out of this world! Well, out of the whisky-world and into the great wide world of particle physics and The Universe... The guest today is famed Particle Physicist Daniel Whiteson. Daniel, and his good friend Jorge Cham, creator of PhD Comics, co-host the podcast "Daniel and Jorge Explain The Universe". They're also the co-authors of We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe. If you'd like, you can watch Daniel's TED Talk HERE. So, as usual, have a seat, have a pour, and listen in. Unless you're driving. If you're driving, be smart and stay sober but be sure to listen into the conversation! Everything you need to know about everything we don’t yet know. This month’s book is We have no idea by the creators of PHD Comics, Jorge Cham and Daniel Whiteson. It discusses the great unsolved problems of physics in a way which is guaranteed to entertain. We hear from the authors, and the Chemistry World team discuss why the llama is the perfect animal for explaining the concept of binding energy.
PHD Comics creator Jorge Cham and particle physicist Daniel Whiteson have teamed up on We Have No Idea: A Guide to the Unknown Universe, an entertaining and lucid explanation of particle physics—what little we know of it. Exploring the biggest unknowns in the universe, they ponder why these things are still mysteries, and what a lot of smart people are doing to figure out the answers (or at least ask the right questions). They also work to demystify many complicated things we do know about, from quarks and neutrinos to gravitational waves and exploding black holes. With humor and relatability, they invite us to see the universe as a vast expanse of mostly uncharted territory that’s still ours to explore. Watch a video. Recorded live at Town Hall Seattle Saturday, May 20, 2017
"I wrote this book with Jorge Cham because we were really excited to share our enthusiasm for exploring the unknown, or looking out into the universe and thinking about the possible crazy things that could be revealed to us. There are lots of books out there about science and explaining what science does know and all the amazing things science has learned, but we really felt like nobody was talking about what we don’t know, what’s out there left for young people who are going into science to discover and people who are interested in science, what they might learn. "
Inspired by models designed to explain the top-quark foward-backward asymmetry, Daniel Whiteson discusses studies of unexplored experimental signatures inside WWbb+jet events, which mimic the top quark signature and may be hiding inside the top quark sample. Whiteson presents the first search for top+jet resonances, the first search to use boosted hadronic W bosons, new same-sign top quark limits, new heavy quark limits, and discuss ttbar+jet resonances, as well as the possibility that Higgs cascades could be hiding inside WWbb events.
