It's 2018. I'm working with a Syrian-born American filmmaker named Sam to get him ready to hit the TEDx stage. We're forming the foundation of his Talk--his idea worth spreading--when I ask him, “Why was making this particular film so important to you?” And he responds, “It's imperative to amplify the voices of what Syrians are going through. Their voices are muted right now and giving voice to the voiceless should be an obligation. That's why people literally risked their lives to make this film.” With that, we have his idea worth spreading: For society to survive, the voices of repressed people must be revived.  By the way, Sam's film, Little Gandhi, becomes the first official Oscar entry for Best Foreign Language Film and goes on to win several awards. And most importantly of all, Sam's willingness to stand up for and speak on what he believes has changed individual and collective stories around the world...which leads me to my special guest today! Lynn Andrews is a versatile artist who has been standing up for what she believes, literally. A fun conversation with our guest, Oren Korenblum!Oren Korenblum is an NYC-based artist, performer, choreographer, dance instructor, and the founder/director of O.K. DANCE Company.  He is a graduate of the American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) in New York City.  He has trained as a tap and jazz instructor at the International Dance Teacher's Association (IDTA), as well as studied ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). Oren was born and raised in Israel and moved to NYC in 2010 to achieve his goals as a creator and performer. In Israel, Oren started his dance/choreography/teaching career right after high school in various acting schools, the Israeli opera, and shows all over Israel. He performed commercials and with The Aluminum Show dance company's international tour in the US, Mexico, Colombia and Israel.As a performer in the US - Since graduating from AMDA, he has performed at numerous regional theaters all over the country in classic musicals such as 42nd Street, Mary Poppins, Cats, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Oklahoma!, Singin' in the Rain, Spamalot, The Music Man, A Chorus Line and countless others. Oren recently performed at the 'Broadway by the Year' concert in NYC.As a choreographer - Oren has choreographed for NBC (Red Nose Day), The Town Hall NYC, various theatres, dance competitions, and music videos. With his O.K. Clayton Pelham, Jr. was born and raised in Southeast, Washington, D.C until the age of 5 where he moved ten minutes away into Suitland, MD in Prince Georges County. In 2004, Clayton was accepted into the Visual and Performing Arts program (VPA)at Suitland High School where he studied Theatre and Acting. While attending high school, Clayton was introduced to The Studio Theatre conservatory located in the Arts District of Northwest, Washington D.C. The Studio Theatre played a major role in his development as an artist. He continued to study there even while attending college at the University of the District of Columbia (UDC). Although, he considered training at the Studio one of the best experiences in his acting career, the program did not offer a degree and two years into his training at UDC Clayton dropped out. Later that summer, Clayton moved to Atlanta, Georgia with his older cousin to pursue a career in acting. Brittney Mack is a performer from Chicago, Illinois, who was most recently seen as Anna of Cleves in the North American Tour of SIX the Musical. Her other credits include Rent, The Wiz, Hairspray, Avenue Q, Shrek, In the Heights, Ain’t Misbehavin’, All Shook Up, and Little Shop of Horrors, as well as the national tour of Memphis. She has performed on Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, and has been seen on the FOX television show Empire. Brittney is making her Broadway debut with her portrayal of Anna of Cleves in SIX the Musical. Born on the south side of Chicago, Britney was one of 5 raised by a single mother and “an incredible tribe of friends.” She shares that one of her favorite things to do as a kid was listen to late night story times - full stories and plays - on the radio. She recalls one show in particular called It’s Your World!, a modern day radio soap opera that played on the Tom Joyner Morning Show, which she would wake up at 5 AM to listen to before school. She believes it was these radio shows that helped spark her imagination. Her mother was always supportive of her dreams to perform, and Britney says, “My mom is the reason why I’m doing what I’m doing.” Brittney attended the Chicago Academy for The Arts, a college prep high school, and later went on to attend The American Musical and Dramatic Academy (AMDA) both in Los Angeles and New York City.  Brittney shares that as an artist she has always been blessed to find steady work. Throughout a performing journey that has taken her all over the world, she recalls revisiting her storage unit in between contracts in order to swap out some clothes and head out for the next production. Brittney had been out to sea on her contract with Royal Caribbean when her grandfather became ill, after which she relocated back to Chicago to be closer to her grandmother. And it was after being on the road with the national tour of Memphis that she found herself in a general audition for Chicago Shakespeare Theater. She shares that it wasn’t until about her 4th audition for them that she really even knew what SIX was all about. She is grateful for this in retrospect, as it could have added unnecessary pressures in the audition room. “It was a blast being in the room,” she said, as they all auditioned in front of and with each other. In 1976, Jiang was arrested by her husband's successors and, after a 1980 televised show trial, was sentenced to death -- with a two year reprieve. Her sentence was commuted to life and she was eventually placed under house arrest. Suffering from cancer, Jiang took her own life. Cecile Tang, considered one of the greatest Chinese language film directors of all time, began researching Jiang Qing's story in the 1970s. She ultimately decided that this remarkable story might best be told through a musical. She wrote the play, the lyrics, and recruited others to help with music and choreography. I, Ching opens in the Los Angeles area on September 14, 2012. On September 6, 2012, the USC U.S.-China Institute, hosted a panel discussion of I, CHING. Playwright Cecile Tang, composer Lowell Lo, and lead actress Marsha Yuan engaged the audience in a candid discussion of their experience creating the play and preparing it for its American premiere. Panelists: Cecile Tang (唐書璇), playwright, was born in China and graduated from USC. Among her films are The Arch (董夫人, 1970) and China Behind (再见中国，1974). Ms. Tang left filmmaking and emigrated to the United States in 1979, becoming a respected restaurateur in Los Angeles. Many critics, however, see her influence in the so-called Hong Kong New Wave of edgy, groundbreaking young filmmakers in the late '70s and early '80s.
