Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Episode Summary: Today we’re going to be talking about the well-known women of the Bible, Mary and Martha. Have you ever seriously considered them? Which one do you identify with most? I’ll confess, I’ve always been more of a Martha wanting to live like Mary. I spent my earlier years very much like a Type-A, driven, achiever, and prized myself on how long my to-do list was, and how much of it I accomplished every day. And yet, when I read the account of Jesus visiting the home of Mary and Martha, I always felt a bit of disappointment and discouragement because it felt like Jesus favored Mary and her personality and temperament more than Martha. But my guest today has good news for you whether you identify more with Mary or with Martha. Quotables from the episode: When worry grows and appeals to the appetite of our hearts, may be grow sick of it, and feast on faith. We must starve worry, and feast on worship. Jesus disciplines those He loves—He guides us because He cares about us. Instead of striving for perfection, rest in the perfection of Jesus! Since God has forgiven us, we have to forgive ourselves. God is personal in His relationship with us. Grace is a gift to be received, mot a prize to be earned. Because of Jesus’s sacrifice, we can pause and celebrate the work that has already been done. Our souls can be at rest even when our hands are busy. Scripture References: Luke 10:38-42 “As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits where while I do all the work? Tell her to come help me.” But the Lord, said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” Ephesians 2:8-10 “God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this: it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so one of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Romans 3:23-24 “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins.” Recommended Resources: Made Like Martha: Good News for the Woman Who Gets Things Done by Katie Reid Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Social Media Links for Host and Guest: Connect with Katie Reid: Website / Instagram / Twitter / Pinterest For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety’s Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails  /  Website  /  Blog  /  Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson)  /  LinkedIn  /  Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube / Podcast Guest: Katie Reid is a national speaker, and author of the book, Made Like Martha: Good News for the Woman Who Gets Things Done. Episode Summary: Today we’re going to be talking about finding our purpose. Did you know that God created you with a very specific purpose? He has plans for you to fulfill that ONLY you can do. Quotables from the episode: “Your emotions will make you second guess yourself, but your confidence in God will make you stand upright.” Dr. Marina McLean “Knowing your purpose starts by identifying your passion.” Courage is seeing something is possible. The depth of pressure that you can handle distinguishes you from being good to being great. Most people find their purpose in the midst of their pain. Scripture References: Psalms 8:4-6 “What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?” 2 Corinthians 1:20 “For no matter how many promises God has made, they are “Yes” in Christ. And so through him the “Amen” is spoken by us to the glory of God.” Proverbs 31:30-31 “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Episode Summary: Today we’re going to be talking about the fact that even in spite of hardships and difficulties that God has allowed, He also shows us how to find hope. My guest today has been through trial after trial, but Julie Holmquist shares with us how she maintained her hope despite her hardships. Quotables from the episode: Scripture says “Hope is an anchor for the soul.” Anchors steady us, and hope pulls us forward, out of the storm. Faith is the driving force in our lives. Without faith, we have no hope. We maintain our hope despite our hardships by remembering God’s faithfulness in the past. God is NOT afraid of our feelings. He can handle our honest emotions. Waiting on God is NOT passive. It is actively intertwining our hearts with His. Waiting on God is actively watching with expectation for Him to move and act. It is an eager anticipation. When someone is hurting and struggling to maintain hope despite their hardships, don’t try to fix it for them. Trying to fix it short-circuits God’s plan for them. Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 4:8-12 “You think you already have everything you need. You think you are already rich. You have begun to reign in God’s kingdom without us! I wish you really were reigning already, for then we would be reigning with you. Instead, I sometimes think God has put us apostles on display, like prisoners of war at the end of a victor’s parade, condemned to die. We have become a spectacle to the entire world—to people and angels alike. Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed. Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don’t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home. We work wearily with our own hands to earn a living. We bless those who curse us. We are patient with those who abuse us.” Job 13:15 “God might kill me, but I have no other hope. I am going to argue my case with him.” Job 2:10 “But Job replied, ‘You talk like a foolish woman. Should we accept only good things from the hand of God and never anything bad?’ So in all this, Job said nothing wrong.” Recommended Resources: Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Social Media Links for Host and Guest: Connect with Julie Holmquist: Website Stuff of Heaven / Facebook Stuff of Heaven / Instagram Stuff of Heaven / Facebook Group Kairos Moments / Instagram Kairos Moments For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety’s Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails  /  Website  /  Blog  /  Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson)  /  LinkedIn  /  Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube / Podcast Guest: Julie Holmquist is an author and Bible teacher. Cole Hatter is a Multi-millionaire, entrepreneur, real estate investor, and founder of Thrive. Today’s Episode Summary Today’s special guest, Cole Hatter, is founder of Thrive (make money matter). He is running a successful multi-million business for entrepreneurs and impacting lives of thousands of people throughout the world through his events.  My conversation with Cole about his entrepreneurial journey. He is talking about his success at an early age, some devastating incidents which took him to Mexico for some time, and then coming back to America and establishing a super successful business. There is a lot to learn from Cole’s story. Cole established his business not to chase better materialistic life but to live a greater purpose. His entrepreneurial story is a living example of the fact that “everything that happens in your life happens for a very good reason”.  Moreover, in the podcast we are discussing how to navigate through difficult times, why people should invest on learning instead of looking for free options. Lastly Cole is sharing some sales tips to the listeners.  This is not it; there is much to learn from today’s podcast. So, bear with us until the last second of this amazing episode which is full of take-home lessons. Cole Hatter Entrepreneurial Story in a Nutshell At the age of 20, Cole was running a million dollar business and was living a lavish life. He had everything he wanted and was spending money fervently like any other young boy. Even though he was blowing money but he had great moral upbringing so he was living a good life ethically and morally.  Then in an accident he lost his very close friends and because of this devastating incident he started suffering emotionally. He was in deep trauma of losing people he loved, meanwhile, his business started failing. Cole was emotionally unavailable and it was impacting his love life also. After some time, he lost everything; his business blew up, his girl friend dumped him and he was still suffering from emotional detachment. To recover from his dire emotional state, he decided to reset his life completely. He disappeared completely, went to Mexico and started serving a non-profit organization. Suddenly this American business man, who was running a million dollar business and was living a lavish life, was at the lowest of the low position. He became a construction worker in Mexico; building houses for homeless families and doing cleaning and stuff. Everything got changed in his life; his work, his environment, and his living standards. He had been switched from one life style to another life lifestyle. From being “somebody” to “nobody” proved to be one of the biggest growth periods for Cole. This transition helped him finding his mission for life. He started his own orphanage in Mexico and kept feeding homeless kids and serving community for 9 months. Serving others for straight 9 months gave him complete healing and then he got ready to move forward in life.  He decided to go back to America to restart his business but this time for a completely different reason. He went back not to just make money but to “make money matter”.  He decided to fund his orphanage through his own business instead of asking people for support. He re-established his business not to chase better materialistic life but to live a greater purpose. And he achieved phenomenal success.  Now he is using his businesses to fund his orphanage and he is also teaching other entrepreneurs to attach meaning to their business and guiding them how to do this. He is running an event Thrive (make money matter) for entrepreneurs to help them create a “for purpose” business. The slogan of Thrive, which is “make money matter”, is epitome of his entrepreneurial story.  This is the short preview of Cole Hatter’s story. I will highly recommend you to listen to the podcast to know what he actually been through during the whole journey. The Episode Timeline [0:00] – Introduction of guest. Episode Summary: Today we talk about how to approach your health with a spirit of grace. My guest is my friend, Amy Connell, who is a personal trainer on a mission to help women realize that their eating and the way they move their body doesn’t have to be perfect. The reason we take care of our body is so we can do what we are called by God to do. Quotables from the episode: Am I taking care of my body the way God wants me to? Perfection will enslave us when it comes to taking care of our bodies. One of the struggles that we tend to wrestle with regarding our health and wellness tends to be an all or nothing mentality. Scripture References: Colossians 3:12 “Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” 1 Timothy 4:3-5 “They forbid people to marry and order them to abstain from certain foods, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. For everything God created is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with Thanksgiving, because it is consecrated by the word of God and prayer.” Recommended Resources: Free Download: How To Fight Fearful/Anxious Thoughts and Win Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: How to Reclaim the Peace God Promises by Dr. Michelle Bengtson Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Free Study Guide Free 7-Day YouVersion Bible Reading Plan for Breaking Anxiety’s Grip Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Hope Prevails Bible Study by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award Social Media Links for Guest and Host: Connect with Amy Connell: Website / Facebook / Instagram For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: Order Book Breaking Anxiety’s Grip / Order Book Hope Prevails  /  Website  /  Blog  /  Facebook / Twitter (@DrMBengtson)  /  LinkedIn  /  Instagram / Pinterest / YouTube / Podcast Guest: Amy Connell is an NASM Certified Personal Trainer and has been in the fitness industry almost 15 years. Malachi also recently launched ProChoice Roofing, a Florida-based roofing company. With over four years of marketing experience under his belt, Malachi reflects on the unusual path that led him to where he is today. Prior to founding Professional Choice Network, Malachi managed operations at a private gym. Feeling unfulfilled at that point in his career, he decided that marketing was his best option to pay it forward. He found a business partner with a large clientele in the roofing industry, who practically handed Malachi the opportunity to start a business serving this particular segment.Beyond being a service provider, Malachi sought to become a partner to those he did business with. To this end, he makes it a point to put himself firmly in his clients’ shoes in order to provide the best marketing solutions that will maximize their respective ROIs. He places heavy emphasis on brand awareness, explaining that building an audience essentially equates to increasing returns.During his solopreneur days, Malachi depended purely on the tried-and-true lead generation method that is cold calling. Upon realizing that he needed to find a way to scale, he put systems in place to leverage his time and greatly expand his network all the while. This led him to find a partner who offered Malachi partial ownership of his roofing company in exchange for his expertise in lead generation.Adding to the success of ProChoice Roofing is Malachi’s understanding of the necessity of marketing and how it can contribute to exponential cash flow if the right investments are made. “Your objective is not to sell a roof,” says Malachi. Instead of advertising the features of the shingles that your company specializes in, it is infinitely better to expose homeowners’ fears of potentially losing more money in the future if they do not invest in better roofing today.By creating that sense of urgency, you do not have to “sell” because they will have already “bought-in”. Specifically, they go to you because they do not see services for their roof—they see solutions to their problems.

If you struggle in your mother/daughter relationship, or have been desiring an improved relationship, then you’ll want to stick this program out to the last minute. Experts in mother/daughter relationship reconciliation and restoration, Blythe Daniel and Dr. Helen McIntosh join us to share what they learned, and the lessons they penned in “Mended: Restoring the Hearts of Mothers and Daughters.” Quotables from the episode: When it comes to relationship reconciliation, we have to put our relationship over any differences. Relationship reconciliation doesn’t just happen. We have to purpose to be healthy in our interactions with each other. Scripture References: Isaiah 61:4 Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins, They will raise up the former devastations; And they will repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations. 029 How To Help Someone with Depression

Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2019 28:23

Episode Summary: Today we’re talking about how to help someone with depression. October is National Depression Awareness Month. Earlier in the month, we’ve heard several guests share their experiences and their hope-filled perspectives as it pertained to depression. Yet I felt that we would be remiss if we didn’t also have an episode addressing how to help someone with depression because depression doesn’t occur in isolation—it impacts our spouses, our family, our friends, and others around us. Mental health awareness is two-fold: One learning to live with it; the other learning to love through it. If you have a spouse, friend, or loved one with depression, and you want to know how to help, this is the episode for you. By 2020, depression will be our greatest epidemic worldwide: greater than heart disease, cancer, and diabetes combined. Depression is considered a medical condition, specifically, a mood disorder. Everyone’s experience with depression is different but there are some general, common signs and symptoms: -Change in mood (sad, blue, irritable, agitated, angry) -Change in socialization -Decreased interest in previously enjoyable activities -Decreased energy level which can make normal daily tasks difficult to accomplish -Changes in sleep and appetite (sleeping and/or eating too much or too little) -Self-medicating (drugs, alcohol, spending, gambling, shopping, work) -Crying -Thoughts of suicide or self-harm While we can be prone to feel helpless to help someone with depression, particularly if we have never experienced it ourselves, there are some practical things we can do to help: Enter into their experience with them and be present. Offer to make a doctor’s appointment for them and offer to go with them. Make plans with them. Even if they decline, keep offering. Ask how you can pray for them and pray with them. Remain encouraging and positive. Meet tangible needs (i.e. car pool, pick up grocery items, run errands). Be willing to just sit and be with them. Convey there is hope.   Often, people can figure out what to DO for someone, but they often stumble over what to SAY. In my private practice, and through my own personal struggles, I’ve found this to be a huge stumbling block. There are definitely things NOT to say: “It’s all in your head.” “Snap out of it.” “Pull yourself up by your bootstraps.” (All of these things convey a lack of sensitivity to the pain they are experiencing. You’d never say these things to someone who has cancer, and depression is just as much a medical diagnosis.) “This too shall pass.” (That is true, but it doesn’t make someone struggling with depression feel any better. Even a tornado passes, but it leaves damage and devastation in its wake.) “What doesn’t kill you will make you stronger.” (First of all, many with depression consider suicide, so it’s never a good idea to joke about dying. Secondly, most with depression don’t care about getting stronger, they just want to survive.) “Others are worse off than you.” (Isn’t this true for everyone? But saying that doesn’t even acknowledge the pain the person with depression is in. And why is their pain any less valid?) “I know how you feel.” (If you’ve never struggled with depression, you don’t know how they feel. Even if you have experienced depression, the situation and symptoms and complicating factors may be entirely different. It’s better not to even try to compare.) Helpful things TO say: “I love you.” The person with depression often can’t love themselves much less believe that others love them. They need to hear this now more than ever, even if they don’t believe it. “I’m here for you.” Someone struggling with depression feels so alone. They need to know that others care enough to be present with them in their pain, rather than trying to fix it. “You are important to me.” When struggling with depression, self-esteem is often at risk. They feel all alone and need the assurance that their standing in your eyes and your life doesn’t change just because of the depression. “I’m sorry you’re hurting.” While I do not recommend saying you know how someone feels, I do suggest you offer kindness, compassion, and concern for their pain. “Is there something I can do for you?” Often, our actions speak louder than words. When you offer to help, you enter into their pain. They may not know how you can help, but by asking the question, you open up the opportunity for dialogue. “You may not believe this now, but you won’t always feel this way.” When one is struggling with depression, the whole world looks black, and the future seems to offer only more of the same. It can be helpful to encourage them that this is a season, and they won’t always be in this place. “What might help you feel better?” This can help them start to think pro-actively about things that help, and can clue you in on how you can support them. For example, if they mention that they always feel better after a walk, offer to walk with them. “What might be making your depression worse?” This can help them step back and take a look at things they need to change (e.g. sleeping too late in the morning may leave them feeling lethargic and sluggish all day, so setting an alarm to get up earlier might combat that), and can also help you better know how to support and pray for them. “We will get through this together.” Depression can leave one feeling incredibly lonely, isolated, and as if no one cares or understands. This simple statement conveys support. You aren’t trying to change them or solve the problem, just be present. Remember, someone else’s experience with depression isn’t your fault and you can’t “fix it” for them-only God can do that. But you can support. Say nothing. Words get us into trouble so often, when really, just being present often conveys much greater support than having the perfect thing to say or advice to try to make things better. In my private practice, and when I speak on the subject, I’m often asked if a loved one should mention suicide with someone experiencing depression. I find that so many people are afraid that if they mention suicide, it’ll “put the idea into their head.” Let me assure you, you’re not that powerful. If someone is deeply depressed, they’ve probably already had some thoughts in that direction already. I’m sure you would much rather ask, “I know things are pretty dark right now. Have you ever thought of hurting yourself?” than you would, “Why didn’t s/he tell me how they were feeling?” or “Why didn’t I do something?” If you ask a friend of someone you love if they’re contemplating suicide, it shows you care, and it opens up a dialogue to let them express their true feelings and can be the first step toward getting them help. Quotables/Tweetables: Mental health awareness is two-fold: One learning to live with it; the other learning to love through it. When it comes to depression, the enemy of our soul seeks to steal our joy, kill our peace, and destroy our identity. Depression will be our greatest epidemic worldwide by 2020. You didn’t cause another person to become depressed, but you can be a supportive part of the solution. No one wants to be depressed. If they knew how to alleviate the depression on their own, they would. Our comments should communicate love, concern, and support, not judgement, shame, or criticism. Scripture References: John 10:10 “The thief comes only to steal, and kill, and destroy, but I have come that they might have life and have it to the full.” Recommended Resources: “Hope Prevails: Insights from a Doctor’s Personal Journey Through Depression” by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award https://amzn.to/2zB0e7J “Hope Prevails Bible Study” by Dr. Michelle Bengtson, winner of the Christian Literary Award Reader’s Choice Award https://amzn.to/2yMdN46 https://drmichellebengtson.com/hope-prevails-despite-depression/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/a-letter-to-one-struggling-with-depression/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/this-thing-called-depression-signs-and-symptoms/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/how-do-i-know-if-im-depressed-common-symptoms-of-depression/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/10-verses-of-hope-for-when-you-are-down-or-depressed/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/20-ways-to-fight-depression/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/can-i-be-cured-of-depression/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/10-things-to-know-if-you-have-a-depressed-loved-one/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/how-to-help-a-depressed-loved-one/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/what-to-say-when-a-loved-one-is-depressed/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/what-not-to-say-when-a-loved-one-is-depressed/ https://drmichellebengtson.com/15-ways-to-help-depressed-husband-wife/ Social Media Links for Host and Guest: For more hope, stay connected with Dr. Bengtson at: To order Breaking Anxiety’s Grip: https://drmichellebengtson.com/breaking-anxietys-grip/ To order Hope Prevails: https://drmichellebengtson.com/hope-prevails-book/ Website: https://drmichellebengtson.com/ Blog: https://drmichellebengtson.com/blog/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DrMichelleBengtson Twitter: https://twitter.com/DrMBengtson (@DrMBengtson) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drmichellebengtson/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drmichellebengtson/ Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/drbhopeprevails/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/MichelleBengtson Radio Show Host: http://graceandtruthradio.world/shows/your-hope-filled-perspective/ Guest: About Dr. Bengtson Dr. Bengtson studied neuroscience and is board certified in clinical neuropsychology. Episode Summary: Today we’re chatting with Tara McMullin, who is a podcaster, writer, and small business community leader. With over a decade of experience helping thousands of small business owners grow their businesses, she’s on a mission to change the dialogue about what’s really working from hype to candid conversation. She’s the host of the What Works podcast, a top small business podcast that’s been recommended by Forbes and Entrepreneur, as well as the founder of The What Works Network, a community hub for small business owners. Her work has been featured on Fast Company, Inc, Daily Worth, and The Huffington Post. What I love most about Tara’s approach is that she’s not peddling the same old advice for every business owner out there. She really honors the unique nature of what everyone is trying to build, and sees herself as a facilitator in helping people uncover what’s unique about themselves, rather than trying to teach how to be just like everyone else. She really inspired me early on in my business experience, and for that I’m so grateful. I wanted to bring Tara on the show to highlight the shift she made from being a “guru” in business, to being someone who really empowered others to look within themselves for answers as they build a business and a life that really works for them. The lessons Tara shares in the episode are geared toward entrepreneurs since that’s the group she focuses on helping most, but as our global economy shifts, I really think all companies can learn from the environment she’s cultivating not only in her business, but in her family, and in her life as well. I just really like the culture she’s building in everything she does, and I’m excited to share that with you all. Episode Summary: Today’s episode is a continuation of what we talked about last week. Over the last 6 years, I’ve focused all of my energy and attention on the issues and struggles working parents face in modern society, especially ambitious professionals who are in those early stages of parenthood. I’ve discovered a lot of unique stressors for this group of people, and our culture is just making things harder for these parents who are drowning and losing out on the most important years of their kids’ lives. This is a devastating situation. I am tired of seeing good people struggle through these important years of their lives. I’m tired of a whole generation of kids growing up thinking this is what life just is. It’s not right, and I believe there’s a way to avoid it. So last week I announced our new approach to working parenthood, which I call the Whole SELF Lifestyle™. If you haven’t heard episode 65, go back and listen, because I talked all about what the philosophy is all about and it’ll be helpful if you have that background. We’re going to build on that conversation today.  Show Notes:  http://workingparentresource.com/66 Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode: WPR002: My “I Can’t Do This Anymore” Working Mom Moment WPR065: A New Approach to Working Parenthood: The Whole SELF Lifestyle™ World Health Organization Burnout Classification Anxiety Research Depression Research Bullying Research Suicide Research The Argenal Institute Website The Argenal Institute Blog The Working Parent Resource Podcast The Argenal Institute Library Schedule a Free Consultation Email me: sarah@argenalinstitute.com About The Argenal Institute: The Working Parent Resource Podcast is a place where we explore how to defeat burnout as working parents so we can finally enjoy these precious years of our lives. About our Guest Sarita Maybin is an international speaker and communications expert. She has worked with clients like Hewlett Packard, Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles County, Department of Navy and the Las Vegas Convention Center and has spoken all over the world. In 2012 she was voted Top 5 Communication Speaker and has had the privilege of speaking on the TEDx stage. She’s also the author of If You Can’t Say Something Nice, What DO You Say? and an expert in confronting tough communication situations in a positive and fun way. Episode Summary: Today, we continue the Powerful Women Series in honor of Women's History Month. Our focus today is on the people pillar and how we communicate. We tackle the complex topic of speaking up when it  might not be comfortable and talk about the importance of finding a middle ground to say what needs to be said before things blow up. We discuss how to ask for what we want using the right language. This includes giving the other party a vote by using collaborative phrases and the power of positive communication phrases. This episode is full of practical tactics for both personal and professional communication. CLIFF NOTES It’s important to speak up and say what needs to be said. Use phrases like, “I would appreciate” to make requests not demands. We need to just ask for what we want. Use a phrase like, “would you be willing to?” Use collaborative phrases at home. When giving feedback focus on the positive rather than the negative and use positive communication phrases like, “help me understand.” 3 Clues that you should pick up the phone instead of email or text. Sensitive subject, conflict, or when there’s a back and forth. Instead of a spellcheck do a “please and thank you check.” The 3Ps by Dr. Martin Sullivan: Don't take things PERSONALLY. It's not PERMANENT. Don't let it ruin the big PICTURE. We can use “if”, "as soon as" and "when" to set boundaries. Quotes from the show: If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all doesn't work anymore. Sometimes you have to say what you need to say. - Sarita Maybin We can all benefit from more truth tellers in the workplace. - Sarita Maybin If we don't tell the truth, how do people improve?  - Sarita Maybin You can tell people the truth and leave them with their dignity intact. - Patrice Washington Say what you mean, mean what you say and don't say it mean. - Sarita Maybin We can make subtle changes in how we talk to each other while remaining assertive. - Sarita Maybin Instead of a demand, its okay to make a request. - Sarita Maybin We need to just ask for what we want. - Sarita Maybin Sometimes our biggest challenges are the communication in our own home. - Sarita Maybin Give feedback with a positive rather than a negative.  - Sarita Maybin We do a spell-check on email, but what we should do is a "please and thank you" check. - Sarita Maybin Don't take things PERSONALLY. It's not PERMANENT. Don't let it ruin the big PICTURE. - Dr. Martin Sullivan Don't take other people's problems on and allow it to ruin your day by taking it personally. - Sarita Maybin When people say something negative it says more about who they are than who you are. - Sarita Maybin Just because you're in a drama, you don't have to be dramatic. - Tim Storey Participating in other people's drama is a choice. - Sarita Maybin Are you the person who brightens the room when you walk in OR when you leave? - Sarita Maybin Sarita's Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions Define Success: Enjoying what you do and making a difference. Art Steele is a business and intellectual property lawyer for creatives and entrepreneurs. She spent the first years of her legal career helping large corporations with tax law. After an encounter with Oprah Winfrey, she realized that she needed to do work with more purpose and branch out on her own. She started her own law office where she provided affordable, high-quality legal services to entrepreneurs and creatives. She is also the host of the Inksecure podcast and a partner at Creative Genius Law. Episode Summary: Today's episode is about estate planning, and there is no better person to have on the show to talk estate planning than the amazing Art Steele. Her passion for estate planning and just helping us be better as a whole is truly inspiring. One of her passions is helping minorities build wealth through estate planning. We talk about discrepancies with minority estate planning, and the importance of home ownership, having life insurance, and passing on a legacy to generations to come. CLIFF NOTES How it's a myth that personal behavior is one of the biggest things that closes the wealth gap. We need estate planning to leave a legacy for our children, so they don't go through the financial hardships that we went through. The people who really should have life insurance policies are minorities. There are so many benefits to home ownership including appreciation and having a tax write-off. Estate planning is an absolute necessity, and the key to generational wealth is to start now. If you have any intellectual property, you should have a trust that says who is going to manage that property.   Quotes from the show: “The purpose of the Inksecure podcast is to make people feel more secure about the legal process and understand everything that needs to be put in writing.” - Art Steele “Being given wealth that is passed down from generation to generation is giving a head start.” - Art Steele “You can't get ahead if you don't pass your money down.” - Art Steele “Every entrepreneur needs Art Steele's legal expertise and access to the way she communicates.” - Patrice Washington "When we don't plan, and when we don't look generations ahead, and when we don't take out life insurance policies, we fall behind.” - Art Steele   Art’s Redefining Wealth Rapid Wisdom Questions Define Success: Success for Art is her son graduating from college and not having any student loan debt, and if he wants to be a teacher and have a $50,000 salary, she can make a down payment on his house for him.   Define Wealth in 3 Words or Less: Freedom, flexibility, and happiness. Episode Summary: Today’s episode is the first in a two-part series, and it’s something I’ve been wanting to cover since before I started this podcast nearly two years ago. I’ve learned a lot over the last 20 years about childhood development, and now that I’m a mom I’ve noticed that a LOT of that information is incredibly helpful to know. There are so many situations where I would normally lose my cool with my kids, but since I have certain information about what’s REALLY going on with them, I’m able to address their behavior in a healthier and more effective way. I wanted to share some of these key pieces of information with you too. Hopefully knowing some of this will give you some insights that will help you know how to navigate those difficult moments with your kids. To help me dive even more into this topic, I’m excited to welcome Julia Pappas, an expert in child psychology and parent coaching. Julia Pappas is a Cognitive Psychologist, Parent Coach, and a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. She has over 15 years of experience working with parents and their children, and has particular expertise in child development, behavioral regulation, and learning needs. Julia believes in the power of parents to change the world by being the best resource, inspiration, and support they can be to their children. She empowers parents to own their mission, discover limiting beliefs and parenting blocks, and helps develop essential skills so that parents can have the most fulfilling years of their life while raising children. What we're talking about it this episode! Understanding the connections between your emotions and your food cravings How to identify signs of emotional eating Using the PEP Test to identify 3 primary emotions linked to overeating The difference between emotional hunger vs physical hunger Tricia’s tips on how to end your emotional eating for good   Episode Summary: Today, my friend Tricia Nelson and I are tackling the huge topic of emotional overeating and how to heal your hunger. After struggling with her own food addiction, and losing over 50 pounds, Tricia has dedicated herself to help those who are struggling with their weight, and today she’s going to share her wisdom with us.   I get email requests to cover this topic all the time, and Tricia is the perfect person to help walk us through it. She is the founder of Heal Your Hunger, is an internationally acclaimed author, motivational speaker, and emotional eating expert, and has helped hundreds of clients overcome various food-related addictions. As Tricia explains, getting control over your weight and what you are eating can be an incredibly powerful thing, but your freedom is contingent on how you live your life. She is an advocate for living life one day at a time and treating the person behind the disease, not just the symptom. It’s time to stop feeding your exhaustion, and start asking yourself what you’re doing to serve yourself as you work to regain your health. Tricia gives us a breakdown of the primary emotions and triggers that prompt eating binges, how to structure your meals to help you overcome your overeating and how being a people pleaser may be sending you into an emotional eating spiral. If you have been looking for a reason to take that first step and change your life for the better, listen in as we discuss ways in which you can end your emotional eating for good. Have you struggled with emotional eating? What are some of your triggers? If you’ve overcome it, what helped you make the transformation? Let me know in the comments on the episode page!   Quotes: “I tried many things, I tried diets and pills and potions and lotions and exercise programs and therapy and twelve-step programs and self-help books, you name it I tried it. But nothing I did worked until I finally came to see and was shown that my problem really is so much deeper than food” (3:04) “We’ve all got something that drives us to be better, and mine happens to have been being an emotional eater, and it has completely driven me to be better. And to do the things like to meditate, to pray, to do all the things I do on a daily basis, I do them really because the things I do help me not have to overeat one day at a time.” (5:39) “I think our nature is to like food and have an emotional attachment to food, I think God probably fashioned us that way so that we would subsist. But I think that people take it farther than others… it's really just a spectrum.” (13:13) “The problem is that we are stressed out and we are not connected to ourselves. We are operating from the neck up and we are all in our heads but we are not in our hearts, not in our bodies and were really disconnected from our true selves, and that causes so much of our problem. It's really about getting back to being conscious if we were, and just really taking that journey from our head to our heart so that we can start to listen and start to really tune in to what's going on inside.” (19:41) “In my program, I really teach people a lot about communication. Because you know we stuff our words with food and we don't speak up and we don't say what we really feel and mean” (23:41)   Resources Mentioned: Heal Your Hunger Website Heal Your Hunger Podcast Free Quiz: Are You An Emotional Eater or a Food Addict? Episode Summary: Today’s episode is all about getting your kid’s stuff organized! I don’t know about you, but one of the biggest challenges my husband and I have is keeping all of our kid’s stuff in order. As soon as my older son was born, we immediately started accumulating kid gear: strollers, toys, clothes, books… the list is endless. And now that there are two of them, it’s multiplying exponentially. The conversation I have with my guest today, Susie Salinas, was so helpful in creating some structure in our home when it comes to our kid’s stuff. Susie Salinas is a mom of 3, military spouse, and owner of “Systems by Susie,” a business that helps busy moms develop long-term, easy-to-maintain solutions to keep their homes, their lives, and their kids organized and stress-free. She also has an online shop where she sells School Memory Boxes and other ready-made organizing solutions. What We’re Talking About In This Episode! How to reduce or eliminate sugar from your diet in 5 simple steps! Some of the scary stats on sugar Some of the common places sugar is hiding that we may not realize The benefits of reducing or eliminating your sugar intake   Episode Summary Today we are discussing one of the most toxic relationships in everyone’s lives, sugar! I will be breaking down the 5 simple steps it takes to break up with sugar, and explain why living without sugar is the key to a better life. In our modern-day society, sugar is almost unavoidable and indistinguishable, most of the time you don’t even know you are consuming it. Almost 75% of the food in the grocery store has added sweetener, and yet we continue to put these chemicals into our bodies and end up feeling terrible. The World Health Organization stated in 2015 that sugars should take up 5% of our diet. However, this is not the case for many people, and your health is suffering because of it! If you are thinking about breaking up with sugar than this episode is for you. By replacing sugar with a positive lifestyle, and learning to love ourselves enough to break the habit, we can see an increase in our mood, energy, stamina and overall quality of life. Learn how an accountability partner can keep you on track, what starches and fibres to stay away from, and how Peppermint Oil can curb your cravings and be the ultimate weight loss tool. Ask yourself my 3 key questions to figure out if you have hidden sugar triggers in your life, and how to reverse our conditioned minds so you can stop getting instant gratification from sugar. As a bonus, listen to receive your free cheat sheet with recipes to help you stop cravings, increase energy and reset stress. Listen to today’s episode for all of this and more, and finally ditch sugar. Have you made the switch off of sugar? What benefits did you notice? If you've tried before but couldn't pull it off, what was it that stopped you? Let us know in the comments on the episode page!   Quotes “Sugar is like the bad boyfriend that your mom warned you about over and over again, but yet you still date him” (0:46)   Resources Mentioned Follow Dr. Lauren Klum on Twitter Dr. Alan Hirsch Blog about Peppermint Oil Sugar Cheat Sheet   Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube   Please review us on iTunes.  And, if you haven’t already, SUBSCRIBE!

Max asks: "What are the benefits of monolingual flashcards?" Episode Summary: Today's podcast: Monolingual flashcards at the beginner / intermediate level Challenge the assumption that you should create monolingual flashcards - how else can you be using the time? Do not use monolingual flashcards to learn the meaning of vocabulary: Definitions Example sentences Instead, use flashcards to practise your output - i.e. choosing the appropriate word and recalling it quickly Big danger: You quickly "learn" the cards, and the exercise stops being useful. Make sure you're not deceiving yourself about the benefits. For this reason, I would avoid creating cards with e.g.: Definitions Complete the dialogue How I might approach monolingual flashcards myself: Don't see it as a "testing" mechanism, but rather a "retrieval" mechanism - i.e. use the technology to help you see the vocabulary more often. Some thoughts: Close deletion (but how soon until you "learn the card"?) Learning Chinese characters A deck of synonyms... perhaps... but how do you scale? Mine Google for example sentences with a particular word, and simply build your flashcard decks with that Question and answer cards - don't test yourself, but simply use it as a mechanism of "repeating" the vocabulary as much as possible so you get more exposure My essential point... if you want to go "monolingual", then just do that... no need to use up your time with flashcards Resources mentioned in today's episode: Make Words Stick - my complete guide to using flashcards to learn and memorise vocabulary in a foreign language Skritter - a great app for learning Chinese characters Episode 188: What are the benefits of monolingual flashcards?
