Episode Summary After everything we've been through in the past few years, anxiety in our population is at an all-time high. You may have felt it yourself.  Dr. Tâmara Castelo has seen this firsthand with her patients. After over 12 years in her career as a doctor, once the pandemic hit she had to shift her way of working. She needed to figure out the best ways to reduce anxiety in her patients to provide the best support through such a highly stressful time.  As an expert in Chinese medicine, she has tons of experience helping others move out of a state of anxiety. And she helps patients understand how to become more attuned to their bodies. This helps reduce anxiousness, tension, stress, and discomfort. We often forget to connect with our body or really tap into what our body needs. So often, stress and anxiety can actually present physically in our bodies. Understanding what these physical manifestations mean can help us get to the real root of the problem.  In this podcast, Dr. Castelo teaches us about how our body tries to speak to us when we're constantly experiencing things like anxiety and perceived stress, pain, or migraines. She'll also dive into the discussion of sleep, and how to prioritize it to help manage our physical and mental health. She'll explain to you the secret to the optimal amount of sleep you should get every night.  If you've been dealing with anxiety, migraines, body aches, or stress– this podcast is for you. Dr. Castelo teaches us so much about looking into your body and recognizing what it needs.  You can make these observations of your body through powerful rituals that Dr. Castelo explains further in this show. She goes deeper into this concept in her book The Power of Rituals: Small Habits, Big Changes for your Well-being and Health.  But listen to this podcast now to immediately start implementing these simple and effective rituals to ease your anxiety and improve your life!  Plus, don't forget that today's the last day to enter the 500th episode giveaway on the Essentially You podcast! Quotes “When we can understand our bodies, we can really learn how to heal.” “One of the things that I love so much, especially for women, is rituals that help them to reduce burnout, stress, and anxiety and overwhelm.”  “People think that the overload is when you are going through [an anxiety attack], but it's not actually– it's the effect after that is the problem” “We've got to be more tuned in with our body and especially our physical body– and really connect into that deeper sense of ‘what is going on'. Because that's going to really support setting in the rituals and doing the things that are really going to support us.”  Resources Mentioned Dr. Castelo's Book: THE POWER OF RITUALS: Small Habits, Big Changes for Your Well-Being and Health Dr. Tamara Castelo's Website Connect with Dr. Castelo: Instagram, Youtube Related Episodes #397: Start Getting Deep, Restful Sleep Tonight with These 5 Hacks #222: Approachable, Effective Strategies for Managing ANxiety Even During Difficult Times with Cameron Rogers #180: How to Overcome the Anxiety Pandemic by Managing Your Mindset with Dr. Joan Rosenberg #144: Using Breath to Heal Anxiety, Addiction, and Much, Much More with Samantha Skelly #99: Learn How to Not Just "Cope" or "Manage" Anxiety, but Truly Say Goodby to Anxiety for Good with Stephanie Dalfonzo

Hey Brave Table fam, thanks for joining me for this week's episode with the absolutely incredible Dr. Mariza Snyder.    Dr. Mariza is a functional practitioner, hormone expert, author (of 8 best-selling books!), wife & mama, wellness advocate, and host of the podcast, Essentially You with Dr. Mariza. She has been featured on Dr. Oz, Oprah Magazine, Fox News Health, and MindBodyGreen.   After healing from her battles with chronic illness, fatigue, and basically a full-body meltdown, Dr. Mariza has dedicated her life's work to helping others—especially women—balance their hormones and empower them with holistic solutions.    Tune in to hear her incredible life story (like emancipating herself as a teenager, how she battled her limiting beliefs to find success, and how she healed from her childhood traumas) plus her tips to improve your well-being and level up your health.    What you'll get out of this episode…    - Why your hormones go out of whack during pregnancy (and how to have some grace with your miraculous body!) - What your menstrual cycle can tell you about your health - The two keys to balancing your hormones and why balancing your hormones is one of the best things you can do for your health - The importance of nutrition, the best types of foods to eat, and the supplements you need to thrive - Why you need to slow down and rest, especially as type A, overachieving women  - How to overcome your limiting beliefs and challenge your thoughts - The number one reason why so many women burn out and sacrifice their health   As a little girl, Dr. Mariza's mantra was “you gotta survive”. Raised in a hectic household by a single mom, her stress response system was constantly lit up, responding to the craziness and chaos that surrounded her. At only 12 years old, Dr. Mariza had her brave AF moment when she moved in with her father and step-mother and started working towards emancipating herself from her mom (yes, at TWELVE years old!)   But eventually, Dr. Mariza's hustle caught up with her in the form of fatigue, thyroid issues, Hashimoto's—basically, everything in her body was off. Doctors kept giving her solutions like birth control and Xanax (to which she said "hell no!"), and she kept falling flat on her face. So, tapping into her unstoppable drive, she did all the research herself and uncovered she could cure herself of these diseases through good hormone health.   Dr. Mariza realized this whole situation was so much bigger than just her—it spoke to the entire way women are treated in the healthcare industry and why so many women end up with the same issues she did: from constantly feeling like we have to prove our worth, whether to our parents, to those we take care of, or to ourselves—coming back full circle to how life was with her mom.    So, Dr. Mariza ditched the biochemistry lab to dedicate herself to what she does today: help women balance their hormones through holistic health solutions and live healthy & abundant lives.    If you enjoyed this episode, make sure you check out…   - Dr. Mariza's website at https://www.drmariza.com/ and on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/drmariza/  - Grab a copy of her latest book, The Essential Oils Menopause Solution here https://join.drmariza.com/menopausebook/ - Listen to her podcast https://www.drmariza.com/podcast/  - Learn more about The Dutch Test https://dutchtest.com/  - More about wellness and holistic health with Jovanka Ciares [link] Before you go, I want to make sure you know about my new Burnout Kit. If You Are Ready to Recommit Yourself to Exercise, You Should: Create healthy metabolic habits by finding a way to hold yourself accountable Establish a base by trying different exercises that allow you to listen to your body Prioritize strength training and reaching muscular fatigue rather than burnout As women, we have been conditioned to believe that the harder and longer we work out, the better results and metabolism we'll get. While regular movement is critical for our heart, bones, brain, metabolism, hormones, and muscle, it is about the type of exercise and the length of time that really make a difference. Flipping 50 With Debra Atkinson Debra Atkinson has helped over 200,000 women “flip” their second half with the vitality and energy they want. A wellness coach, hormone balancing expert, and the founder of Flipping 50, Debra is passionate about helping both women and men get metabolically fit through methods they enjoy and provide powerful lifestyle changes. With her 37-years of full-time fitness experience, she is an expert at helping women in menopause take back control of their bodies. Recommitting Yourself to Exercise Many of us have found our exercise routines plateauing and our waistlines getting bigger throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. There is absolutely nothing to be ashamed about if you can relate to this feeling and want to recommit yourself to your exercise routine.  But did you know that it can take as little as 20 minutes a day of strength training to see the metabolic recovery you have been searching for? Debra's approach is all about exercising smarter, not harder so that you can master your metabolism and get your fitness working for you. Get More Out of Your Workouts for Less Burning your mind and body out through exercise will never support your body in the way it needs to be supported. By focusing your workouts on achieving muscle fatigue, rather than the number of reps or minutes you spend at a machine, you can increase your metabolic rate and give your body the rest and recovery it needs to thrive. While exercise is vital for women of every age, it is especially important to have a tailor-made plan to set your body up for success during perimenopause, menopause, and beyond. By checking in with yourself, stopping overdoing it, and learning what is not working for your body, you can get more bang for your buck when it comes to your workouts and health. Are you ready to reset, get back on the saddle, and create a plan to benefit your metabolism and your hormones? Share what accountability tools you are going to use, like the 10 Day Hot, Not Bothered Challenge, to get moving again with me in the comments on the episode page.   Quotes: “Accountability is the number one reason people hire personal trainers and health coaches. And don't throw that under the bus, or think you shouldn't need to do that, because that is worth everything. That is priceless; we all  need that.” (15:15) “For a lot of people, getting moving first with strength training can be far easier. Not having to have that severe discomfort of getting breathless. And often, if you are not drawn to integral training or cardiovascular exercise, you will probably be more inclined to have a better time and enjoy yourself a little bit more with strength training.” (21:54) “The moment that you are in right now is a huge opportunity. Because you have got a clean slate, and you can get started.” (23:32) “Any mode of exercise can fit that bill, but the key is that you love it.” (26:04) “I am asked this a lot, how long should my strength training workout be? And the bigger point is, let's reach muscular fatigue and get a quality workout. It is not necessarily about the minutes.” (29:17) “Rest and recovery are very important, and the rest in-between is as important as the actual exercise.” (31:04)   In This Episode How the pandemic has impacted our weight, stress, inflammation, fitness, and more (6:58) What you can do to keep your healthy metabolic habits in place during the pandemic (13:44) Ways that strength training can stabilize your blood sugar and alleviate your anxiety and depression (20:25) The best plan of action to get back into your routine and rebound from the past year (23:14) Why cardio is not the best way to burn fat or achieve weight loss (31:59)   Resources Mentioned: 10 Day Hot, Not Bothered Challenge Flipping Fifty Website Follow Flipping Fifty on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube Follow Debra on LinkedIn   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative   Related Episodes:  Essentialy You episode #279: The Secret to Gliding, Not Slamming, Into Perimenopause and Beyond with Dr. Lakeischa, MD Essentially You episode #213: What Is the Right Exercise If You Are Dealing with Hormone Issues?  Essentially You episode #208: How Exercise Can Either Boost Your Metabolism or Damage It at Age 40+ with Debra Atkinson

In order to stop emotional eating and self-sabotage, you must: Take the time to check in with yourself, truly sense hunger cues from your body, and slow down when eating  Provide yourself with options other than eating to break your unconscious habit Look to what is actually causing emotions in your life such as stress and anxiety and heal those from the ground up   Have you been using food as a way to distract or numb your unpleasant emotions or unmet needs? Our world feels like a scary movie, and it is creating a lot of emotions around eating. If you are struggling with food right now, you are not alone, and traveling fitness professional and coach Natasha Allen is here today to help you embrace mindful eating and stop self-sabotaging.   Ending Emotional Eating Once and For All With Natasha Allen Natasha wants to provide you with nonjudgemental recommendations so that you can break the cycle of emotional eating and start winning at life. After 20 years in the corporate world, Natasha broke free of her limiting beliefs and gained her confidence by failing forward. Passionate about helping women sit down and deal with their emotions, and ultimately repair their relationship with food and their body, Natasha is the expert you need to hear from if you are looking to tap into your inner dialogue and heal the disconnect between your mind and your body.   How to Stop Giving Into Your Cravings Instead of giving in to your cravings or subconsciously eating way more than you need, Natasha has some simple steps that you can take to start analyzing the role food is playing in your life. It is time to stop reaching for that bag of chips and start truly understanding what is going on at the root of your emotions so that you can start serving your body with things that it actually needs.   Why Mindful Eating Is So Important Our busy, overwhelmed society has us shoveling our food in a few minutes flat, grazing all day, or forgetting to eat entirely until we binge eat everything. This is not the way our bodies are meant to function optimally. By taking the time to sit and deal with your emotions, you can discover what your inner needs truly are and start to meet them without food. Emotional and binge eating can often be used to distract or numb from things we don’t want to deal with, and it is only by kindly questioning yourself that you can start to unveil your hidden patterns.  Have you noticed that your relationship with food has changed as the state of our world also changes? Share which emotional or binge eating problems you are struggling with in the comments section of the episode page.   Quotes: “Now I absolutely love what I do… but it took 20 years in corporate finance and hating every job I ever had. And going into fitness, but still never really feeling like it was my own. And so now I love everything about what I do.” (9:26) “The day that I made the decision to just break it off and honor what I knew I had inside of me, everything changed.” (14:53) “It takes a lot of conscious effort, but put your brain on pause. And then find out, ‘am I really hungry, or is there an emotion I am going through? Am I abandoning myself and prioritizing someone else’s needs, or am I putting myself ahead?’” (22:58) “It's actually just taking a step back to just enjoy the moment and the space that you are in when you are eating.” (32:08) “We forget to take those steps back, and just enjoy our meal, chew our meal, take a break, drink some water. It’s just slowing everything down and just honoring the moment you are in.” (33:42)   In This Episode Tips for gaining confidence while failing forward and accepting life’s inevitable ups and downs (11:44) How to get past self-sabotage when it comes to your relationship with food (16:20) Questions to ask yourself to check in with your body and navigate your food triggers during Covid-19 (18:09) Other options to consider to shift your state of stress and anxiety instead of emotional or binge eating (25:51) The importance of embracing mindful eating and slowing down when experiencing your food (28:58)   Resources Mentioned: See Natasha on Ms. Health and Fitness 2020 Here Emotional Eating Advice Website Follow Natasha on Instagram | Facebook | YouTube  Break Free From Emotional Eating Facebook Group   Related Episodes:  Essentially You episode #194: Three Simple Ways to End Emotional Eating with Tricia Nelson Essentially You episode #151: Healthy Holiday Eating and Curbing Emotional Cravings with Dr. Mariza   Other Resources: Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Podcast production & marketing support by the team at Counterweight Creative

Hormones are a huge piece of the wellness puzzle, and unbalanced hormones can certainly lead to a whole host of skin issues. Tell me about it in the comments!   In this episode: Essential oils as a key part of the hormone balancing solution Why getting stress under control goes a long way to a healthy hormone balance Methods for applying essential oils in ways that are kind to your skin Safely using essential oils to treat baby's skin rashes A breakdown of Dr. Mariza's new book and how it can guide you in your use of oils and hormone health   Quotes: “So often what I find is that when we're in the middle of these journeys, when we're struggling with our hormones, when we're struggling with energy issues, when we're having mood swings or cravings, that we can utilize the power and effectiveness of these oils, and they literally produce a result in about a minute.” [3:24] “Your body just doesn't know what to do with stress and it causes more skin irritations.” [11:51] “So often women are like, what is happening inside of my body that's causing this biochemical reaction? So I really want to give women some context. If we don't feel well and our bodies aren't working the way that they used to, I want women to really say, ‘now I have a really clear understanding of what's happening in my body.'”[14:26]   Links: The Essential Oil Hormone Solution: Reset Your Hormones in 14 Days with the Power of Essential Oils Smart Mom's Guide to Essential Oils: Natural Solutions for a Healthy Family, Toxin-Free Home and Happier You Find Dr. Mariza Snyder online Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | YouTube | Instagram | Pinterest | Twitter | Linkedin Find all of Dr. Mariza Snyder's books Dr. Mariza's hormone balance recipe cheat sheet Essentially You podcast   Check out the full show notes here! We all know what it feels like to be rundown, stressed, and on the brink of burnout. My guest, Dr. Mariza Snyder, a specialist in using essential oils for hormone health, shares today how and why you should be including them in your health care routine, including as a way to reduce stress. Like so many natural practitioners, Dr. Mariza had a youth plagued with headaches, weight issues, and hormonal imbalances she attributes to family legacy, or a “woman’s plight.” She knew that something had to change, so set out on a quest fuelled by nutritious food and daily exercise. When a friend recommended she try an essential oil blend to help protect her against illness, Dr. Mariza’s life changed. Learn what the magic blend was that kept Dr. Mariza from getting ill for 3 and a half years, after getting sick 5-7 times per year. See how prioritizing self-care and daily defense can have a positive impact on your hormonal health. And then discover how different essential oils can help with different aspects of your life: sleep problems, energy depletion, headaches, and menstrual migraines. Do you have too much stress in your life and not enough stress reduction techniques? Do you know how to implement natural remedies to help with common hormonal problems? How do you make time for you?   In This Episode: How to learn to put yourself first How bringing self-care and establishing good boundaries affects your relationships How you can use essential oils to help you ground down How essential oils can help you manage your stress levels What instant energy is and how this oil blend will boost your mood How to figure out what oils you need at any given time What the best essential oils for sleep are What the “Menstrual Migraine” is and how essential oils can help with this   Quotes: “As a Latina woman, I felt that my worth was predicated by how much I did for others. I had to really wrestle with that belief.(2:30) “Letting go of what’s not serving you, removing yourself or putting some hard lines between those healthy relationships, creating those boundaries really does free you up to be your best self and to have better-nourished relationships.” (4:45) “I always tell people that the orange blossom or the sweet orange or the wild orange - I dare you to stay mad after breathing that oil. Try! Try to stay upset, try to stay frustrated. You talk about your plant-based diet, and we have a lot of listeners who are vegan as well. How long have you been eating this way, and what led you to make the decision to change your diet?  Dr. Mariza Snyder's Website: https://www.drmariza.com/  Video Version: https://youtu.be/DmNlmrAJa88   Listener Questions: Q1 - 6:00 In my 20’s and teens, my period wasn’t a problem, but I recently turned 30 and my periods have been out of this world heavy, painful, and crampy. What are some of the best natural remedies, and oils that I can use to help alleviate the symptoms? * Jayme in Richmond  Q2 - 8:49 I am in my early 40’s and have been researching my different options as far as hormones I should be taking. Recently, I came across something online about Bio Identical Hormones, which some people seem to be arguing are a safer route to take than traditional hormones. Do you have any experience with Bio Identical Hormones, and do you recommend them to your patients? What is your opinion on the risks associated with traditional hormone replacement therapy? -June in New York Q3 - 10:47 Lately I’ve been hitting the worst afternoon slump around 2pm. I have been very mindful about what I eat for lunch, in hopes this would help…trying not to eat anything too heavy or with too much sugar , I even try not eating sometimes, but no matter what I do ,no matter how much I slept the night before or if I got my workout in that morning, I hit this slump. I am wondering now if it is something hormonal, because that’s the only thing I can not rule out. If it is hormonal, what could I do to help? I need my afternoons to be productive at work, and in the evenings I have activities with my kids and church stuff, so I need a solution! -Margaret in Monterrey Q4 - 12:55 In your podcast with Dr. Wolfson, he talked about a supplement that helps men in the sexual department, but my husband is like yours, he doesn’t need that. I on the other hand, have had a really hard time getting in the mood since I had my son about a year ago. Once we get going, I am fine, but I really struggle to get that desire or to get excited like I used to. Are there any essential oils or natural things I could try to help me get revved up? * Anonymous Q5 - 15:18 I can not STAND the taste of coffee but I am really jealous of everyone who gets their morning caffeine boost, and afternoon pick me up. I tried caffeine pills but they made me crazy. What is a good natural energy boost that I can drink or take? -JoAnne in TX Q6 - 16:50 I am 42 and have not experienced anything that I can identify as a symptom of menopause. My sister is a couple years older than me, and she is a big proponent of taking hormones. She is trying to get me to see my doctor and get started, but I don’t see the need because my period is still regular, my sex life is great (HA), and I am not experiencing any hot flashes, mood swings, etc. Do you think that I need to get ahead of the curve and start some sort of treatment, or just wait until I start noticing “the change”. - Kerry in Missouri Q7 - 18:08 I am a big fan of the Keto Diet- which is low carb and high fats. I LOVE how I feel when I am eating this way, and one of the things I love is that it seems to keep my period really regular…. I have PCOS and this isn’t something that I experience when I am not really following this diet. The only thing that stinks is my period is INSANELY heavy! Heavy flow, intense cramps that go down my entire thighs and into my back. I was reading online that this could be brought on by increased fats, so I am trying to be mindful of that during my period. Do you think that is the case or could it be something else? What are some foods I should focus on eating right before my period and during it that will help make it less extreme? Are there supplements I should be taking? I do NOT like to take birth control and that is not an option for me to help regulate. -Alison in Montreal   To learn more about the principles of intermittent fasting, purchase Chantel's book, Waist Away: The Chantel Ray Way NOW by visiting http://amzn.to/2CVmTgs YouTube Channel Link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCteFjiVaY6n0SOAixcyZbWA Like us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/TheChantelRayWay     Things we love: https://chantelrayway.com/things-i-love-2/  Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheChantelRayWay  ***As always, this podcast is not designed to diagnose, treat, prevent or cure any condition and is for information purposes only. Essentially You: Empowering You On Your Health & Wellness Journey With Safe, Natural & Effective Solutions

What We’re Talking About In This Episode! The importance of self-care in every aspect of your life How to stop putting yourself last Achieve the success you know you are meant to have Morning rituals that will nourish you and set you up for a fantastic day Opening yourself to incredible success   Episode Summary:  On this episode of Essentially You, we're diving into one of my all-time favorite topics, self-care. This is one of my favourite topics because I continue to learn more about it every day, and it really has had a huge impact on my life, along with thousands of other women. As women, we are raised to believe that our measure of success is how much we do for other people. However, in doing this we forget about the most important person of all – ourselves! Taking care of yourself is the key to your success, and can impact your health, energy, relationships, and so much more.  We need to stop believing that self-care is selfish because it is not. By taking 30 minutes a day to recharge our batteries and get our mind and body in the right place, we will be able to be more productive, more successful, and all around happier people.  Energy is everything, and we need to be fueled by our own happiness and fill our own cups first so that we can provide those we love with the same great energy. Taking care of ourselves means we are at our best when we need to take care of others, which is really our goal and nurturers.  Let me help you get started by sharing some of my favorite morning rituals as well as daily habits to help you create the day that you want based on your needs and priorities. Find out how giving compliments and expressing gratitude can not only affect your mood but also those around you. Dive into what makes a productive morning routine, and how to continue to use self-care practices throughout the day so you are putting your best energy forward. It’s time to stop being someone who doesn’t even have 5 minutes to go to the bathroom alone, and start being the successful, happy and positive woman that you have been neglecting inside of you! Let’s get started.     Quotes: “The emotional and physical energy you create from daily self-care shows up in how you approach everything else in your life, including your success.” (1:35) “If you are feeling guilty about self-care I want you to take a long hard look at yourself in the mirror and ask yourself, ‘do I have the energy that I need to show up in the world and be the person that I was meant to be?’” (3:35) “You get to tune into as much joy and energy as you like. It’s all about shifting that belief and opening doors for more choices. Once you step into that higher energy you will begin to shift, and that includes your health, relationships, and so much more.” (16:21)   Resources Mentioned:   Episode 9: Why Creating A Morning Ritual Will Change Your Life with Dr. Mariza Top 11 Self Care Wellness Rituals   Check out the full show notes page Keep up with everything Dr. Mariza Follow Dr. Mariza on Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | Youtube Please review us on iTunes.  And, if you haven’t already, SUBSCRIBE!
