Today I'm chatting with Michael Easter, author of the new book The Comfort Crisis, Embrace Discomfort To Reclaim Your Wild, Happy, Healthy Self. He's a contributing editor at Men's Health magazine, columnist for Outside magazine, and professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. He's traveled the world researching the benefits of why it's important to get comfortable with the uncomfortable — going as far as trekking up to the Arctic to do just that. In today's episode, he shares his biggest takeaways from the other professors, adventurers, and researchers he spoke to along the way, helping us gain a better understanding of why we must break through the walls of our comfort zones and what to do if you get stuck along the way. What do you get when you combine camo pants, a fiery passion for dance, sweat, and a good time? Meet Caleb Marshall, known to his 3.25 million (and growing) YouTube subscribers as The Fitness Marshall. For episode 161, I talk to Caleb all about his journey to becoming a top YouTube creator, where he uses his platform to spread joy, self-love, and confidence to as many people as he can through his one-of-a-kind — as he calls them — ”fitertainment” routines. We also chat about what it was like for him to come out as gay to his family and friends as a teenager, and his hopes for other members of the LGBTQ community if they struggle to do the same. There are so many things I love about this episode, but really it's Caleb's vibe that no matter your age, size ability, color, gender expression — everyone has a place, period. Heeeellloooooo, season SIX! It was a no-brainer for me to kick off season six with Hillary Allen because of her incredible story involving a near fatal #hurdlemoment in 2017. During a skyrace in Norway — which is essentially a run that involves massive vertical gain and direct ascents over steep, technical terrain — she slipped and fell from a ridge. Cue a 50-foot free fall followed by a nasty tumble, more than 100 feet further down jagged rocks. In today's episode, she talks to us about how she got to this point — born in Colorado and falling in love the outdoors from a young age, then trail running while working on her masters degree. That hobby turned into a full-blown career, leading her to become one of the best mountain ultra runners in the world before. She talks us through the details of that accident, bracing for impact and landing in a hospital with 14 broken bones. She gets honest about the road to revery, which was more than jus physical, admitting that there were times in the months that followed where she didn’t want to live. Grateful that Hillary, new author of Out And Back, is here with us to tell us this story today. Akin Akman may be a fitness coach, but he's really aiming to make an impact on your mind. The now-Chief Fitness Officer and co-founder at AARMY learned about the importance of movement and mindset from a young age. At 7, he was training to become one of the top players on the tennis court at IMG Academy. His coach, Nick Bollettieri, told him that he had the potential to be the best and go pro — until, he got injured. Devastated at first, Akman reflects on that #hurdlemoment today with gratitude because it put him on the path to where he is now. In episode 155, Akin shares the details surrounding the first Spin class he ever taught in Miami, and how he ended up moving to New York and joining the team at Soul Cycle, selling out 30+ classes each week within minutes. He talks about how "Akin’s Army" came to be, and the challenges that came hand-in-hand with launching AARMY shortly before a global pandemic. Plus: His take on a champion’s mindset, how he defines purpose, and what he’s looking forward to in the year to come. SOCIAL @akiniko @aarmy @emilyabbate @hurdlepodcast MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE 140. Between Spring 2007 and Spring 2010, I lost 70 pounds. I was in college, and before the night that changed everything (you'll have to listen to hear exactly what happened), I felt uncomfortable and unhappy in my body. For today's #HURDLEMOMENT, I'm talking you through how I got to the place where I was ready to make some forever lifestyle changes, and answer your questions about this chapter: Almost 12 years later, how do you keep it off? What was the hardest part? What did you eat? Did you count macros? (Plus, so many more.) Note: I am not a registered dietitian or a nutritionist. The feedback and lessons I've learned, I share them with hopes to help someone else. If you are interested in losing weight, I recommend you talk to an expert one-on-one about your body. Massy Arias knew she was destined to do big things from a young age. Coming into her own after arriving in the U.S. from the Dominican Republic at 13, she braved #hurdlemoment after #hurdlemoment, including a stage IV cancer diagnosis for her brother, abusive relationships, and devastating depression. For eight months, she barely left her Brooklyn bedroom, feeling entirely lost. An intervention with her family and friends led to her embracing a more active lifestyle, with trips to the gym (+ time on the elliptical) resulting in a more dedicated, consistent fitness routine. Through the discovery of bodybuilding — which she said contributed to severe body dysmorphia — she learned that her big goal was to help find a healthy approach to fitness, empowering others to find happiness through movement. And so, she began to construct her empire — diving into certifications and social media. Fast forward to today, the new mom offers up fitness plans and inspiration to her millions of Instagram followers and works with well-known clientele, all pieces to the puzzle of building her brand. Emily Skye wants women everywhere to know that they are not alone in their struggles. Today, I’m catching up with the fitness trainer who reaches 14 million via her app (and more than 2.5 million on Instagram) for the show. The Australian-born mom-of-two talks to me about her upbringing and the #hurdlemoments that came in her teenage years resulting in anxiety and depression. She details a few abusive relationships that made her question her value, and gets honest about trying to end her life around age 18. She talks about how that experience made her determined to help those with similar struggles, eventually inspiring her journey into the fitness industry and the creation of her online programming. With her outstanding reach, being such a public person comes with a fair amount of criticism. We chat about that today and how she manages unsolicited feedback. Plus: The individuals who inspire HER to be better so that she can be more present, both online and with her family. We also talk about life as a mom (just nine months ago she had her second baby on her bathroom floor!) and what she’s looking forward to in the coming months including the recent launch of her fit post-pregnancy program. By now you’ve probably heard of The Sculpt Society, a dance-based fitness method with a cult-like following. Over the pandemic, it grew astronomically — more than 700 percent (!) — as many of us leaned into at-home fitness. Today on the show, I’m chatting with The Sculpt Society founder Megan Roup. Growing up in California, Megan started dancing at a young age and went through her fair share of hurdles on her way to New York University's Tisch School of The Arts. In episode 150, we talk about the pressures that came hand in hand with trying to make it as a dancer, including struggling with disordered eating and getting to a place where she felt truly comfortable in her body. We also chat about her stint as a Brooklyn Nets dancer and how her love for dance-based fitness actually started as a side hustle when she was running around New York auditioning for new opportunities. Megan also shares what 2020 was like for her, an eventful year in her personal life as well with a wedding, a baby on the way, and more. We also cover what the uptick in The Sculpt Society users taught her about herself as an entrepreneur and the need to prioritize self care. Spoiler: We both cry in this episode, so yeah … that doesn’t happen often on the show. BUT, in this case it doesn’t surprise me. You’ve probably already heard of Dave Asprey, or at least of the company he founded — Bulletproof 360 (home to The Bulletproof Diet and Bulletproof Coffee). Aside from having those tidbits on his resume, he's also the founder of the biohacking movement. As he defines it, biohacking is the art and science of changing the environment around you and inside of you so you have full control over your own biology. This week, Asprey has a new book out called Fast This Way, and in today's episode he tells me how he got to this point. He talks to me about what life was like when he weighed 300 pounds, Was a computer hacker, and dealing with a slew of health issues including arthritis — which lead him into learning and inventing biohacking. He explains how he started to spend money on getting "better than he ever had been," and what that really looked like. Now, obviously we address that we don’t all have hundreds of thousands of dollars to hack our own health, so naturally Dave offers some low cost and free examples of small ways we can all safely level up, whether it be through our diet or other practices — like cold showers. We also talk about his impressive career history — how he made a small fortune by the time he was 26 and then lost it when he was 28. With personal best times of 1:16 in the half marathon and 2:37 in the marathon, Becs Gentry is a stellar athlete — proud of the body she’s built that enables her to show up every single day. But in episode 143 of Hurdle, she tells me about a time in her life when she actually didn’t feel super comfortable in her own skin. The Peloton instructor details what it was like to first start integrating more walking into her day to day back home in England, and how that routine slowly developed into a running habit. She tells me about the conversation she had with her uncle that changed everything, empowering her to get out of a bad relationship and pivot in her career, what it was like to travel the world for nike during the early stages of Nike Run Club, and the call from Rebecca Kennedy had her packing her bags and moving to New York to join the Peloton team. She also shares her best advice for how to handle negative self talk, something I know we all can be guilty of from time to time. This one's jam-packed with goodness, it’s also an episode that ya’ll have been DM-ing me asking for! So! I’m happy that it’s one of the first in the new year. Yes or yes? That’s a go-to saying from top trainer Charlee Atkins, CSCS, founder of Le Sweat TV. For episode 141, I’m chatting with the mega inspirational coach about her journey. A longtime Soul Cycle favorite, Atkins talks about how she got to the podium and became a master instructor, and the huge impact that founders Julie Rice and Elizabeth Cutler had on her and her career. She also tells me about going out on her own, expanding on the intense work that goes into building your own brand and a fitness content platform. This conversation is magical. This week, I am so elated to bring you my chat with Emily Harrington, pro rock climber and adventurer. On Election Night, when most of us were glued to CNN and other coverage, she was making history — starting a free climb of the route Golden Gate on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Over the course of the next 21+ hours, she became the first woman to free climb this route in under 24 hours, a huge accomplishment. I knew instantly that I had to have her on the show, ASAP. For episode 137, Emily talks to me all about this impressive goal — from the planning to the execution — and details a super scary moment when she fell during her climb, completely puncturing her forehead. She also gives me some of her backstory — how she got involved in climbing in the first place growing up in Boulder, Colorado — and how at one point she was deciding between becoming a lawyer or taking on the sport professionally. You want some motivation? This episode is full of it. Olympian Marielle Hall and I have a few things in common. We both navigated the pandemic living solo, for starters. We both also have spent a chunk of our lives in the northeast. And, we also both love running, she just does it a lot faster than me. In episode 136, we chat about her upbringing and love for all things active from a young age, what it was like to run in college in Texas, and her path to the 2016 Olympic Games. We also talk about her recent pieces for Runner's World, and she gives me her honest feedback on how she feels about the Olympics being pushed back. One note: We recorded this last Thursday, November 5, 2020, and it’s really, really insane how much can change in four days. Remy Park's authenticity is refreshing as all hell. We met at The Big Quiet last year — hosted by past hurdler Jesse Israel — and have enjoyed keeping up with one another since. Today, she's garnered quite a following, sharing her vegan recipes, wellness tips and tricks, and New York City life over on her website Veggiekins. But her day-to-day hasn't always been matcha lattes and gluten-free desserts. In episode 135, she talks about her constantly evolving relationship with food, and details disordered eating habits that started at age 7 and lasted through her first year of college. We chat about what it was like for her to attend her first AA meeting, talk with a therapist, and begin keeping track of her day-to-day intake. She tells me how she developed healthier habits, ultimately coming a holistic nutritionist and sharing her eats with strangers (and friends!) near and far. When Gwen Jorgensen graduated from the University of Wisconsin, she had every intention of becoming a CPA. Within a year of working, she did her first triathlon, doing well enough to achieve elite status. Before she knew it, she had qualified for the 2012 London Olympics and life was never really the same. In episode 133, Gwen talks to me about the #hurdlemoment of navigating a flat tire in London, causing her to come in 38th place, and inspiring her to work harder than ever to make it back to the olympic stage in 2016. We talk about the big life decisions she had to make to follow that dream, including a move abroad and the relentless support of her partner Patrick, and what it was like to be the first woman to win Olympic gold in triathlon. Of course, we also get into her decision to leave triathlon for running full-time, what life’s like in Portland right now, and how motherhood and injury have both played big roles in her recent training. What’s GOOD, Season 4!? Excited to kick things off with Cody Rigsby, the Cycling Director at Peloton. You know what I love most about Cody? He is so unapologetically himself. For episode 132, he chats with me about growing up in North Carolina and knowing from the first time that he visited New York City that he was meant to be here. We talk about everything from when he accepted he was gay and what it was like telling his mom, to working three different jobs at once just to make rent at his first New York apartment while following his goal to be a dancer. He also tells me about Peloton “falling in his lap,” and how the job has been one of the biggest blessings of his life. The inspiration in this episode? It is literally endless. Miles Chamley-Watson never wanted to blend in with the crowd. Moving to the United States from London at a young age, he picked up fencing to deal with the criticisms he faced from his classmates when it came to "fitting in." That decision changed his life, excelling at the sport early on and eventually becoming world champion as well as a two-time Olympian. In episode 130, I chat with the Red Bull-sponsored athlete about how he got to where he is today, fending off the naysayers and staying the course to do what he loves, despite "not looking like anyone in his sport." He talks to me about the ins and outs of sponsorships, his lofty goal to be the first-ever fencer to make $1 million, and how he navigates the newfound fame that comes with success. In this episode, we look at the truth about time management and why it's still a problem. Sponsor: Visit www.athleticgreens.com/tinyleaps to try it out - and receive the FREE D3/K2 wellness bundle with your first purchase! Again, that’s www.athleticgreens.com/tinyleaps. The Problem Whole industries have been built around time management systems and teaching us how to use them. There is no shortage of these hacks - digital and paper calendars, notification reminders, productivity apps on your phone and the list goes on. In addition, there are millions of blogs, podcasts, and books, all on the topic of how to manage your time. Yet even with all of these resources available to us, we are all still frustrated, we’re still wasting time, and we’re still unable to get things done. What gives? Digging Deeper When did the idea of time management come about? The idea of time management was invented by Fredrick Taylor in the late 1800’s to provide a system to accomplish more in a shorter period of time. This was at a time when mass production was beginning, and the factory owners needed the workers to produce in large quantities. In his book, The Principles of Scientific Management, he laid the groundwork for modern organization and decision theory. The idea was simple, how can you get more output from each individual worker in an organization given the limitations of the 24 hr day? The Solution So what do we do to actually improve our time management skills in today’s world and in our personal lives? Well first we have to realize something: Time is fixed and inflexible. That means time, by definition, is not manageable. Time isn’t something you can change. We all get 24 hours in a day and we all need to sleep, eat, rest, shower, and do any number of other things that have nothing to do with our goals. Once you realize this truth you can stop asking the fundamentally incorrect question of “how do I better manage my time?” and start asking the correct question which is “how do I manage myself and my behavior?” Instagram: http://instagram.com/tinyleaps Resources: https://www.amazon.com/Principles-Scientific-Management-Frederick-Winslow/dp/0486299880 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Kate DiCamillo writes books for kids and young adults that also just happen to break open grownup’s hearts. Moving to Minnesota from Florida in her twenties, homesickness and a bitter winter helped inspire her to write Because of Winn-Dixie(https://amzn.to/39I3Vee), her first published novel, which became a runaway bestseller and earned her a Newbery Honor. Since then, Kate’s written for a wide range of ages, earning a devoted audience and heaps of accolades. Her #1 New York Times bestseller The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane was a deeply moving reflection o life, meaning and legacy, through the eyes of a toy china rabbit. The Tale of Despereaux, her Newbery Medal-winning novel, later inspired an animated adventure from Universal Pictures and Kate was named National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature for 2014–2015.She’s fiercely honest, always tells the truth, but also always leads you to a place of awakening and hope, especially in circumstances that seem destined for the opposite. And right now, we could all use a bit more of that. The theme of hope and belief amid tough circumstances is a common thread in much of Kate’s writing, in no small part because that was her story, too.You can find Kate DiCamillo at: Website : http://www.katedicamillostoriesconnectus.com/Facebook : https://www.facebook.com/CandlewickPressBooks/Check out our offerings & partners: Athletic Greens: Boost your energy levels, support your immune system, and address gut health. There's something about this conversation with Aisha Praught-Leer that makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Sure, she may be married and an Olympian, but it felt like we were just two women in our thirties rapping about life and our similar struggles. In episode 127, the steeplechase athlete-turned-middle-distance runner talks to me about hitting her stride in her sport within the last 5 years, and what it was like to pivot on the track. We also chat about her fueling strategy, navigating injury, the newfound appreciation she has for her body and fluctuations in-season versus off-season, and what life's like in beautiful Boulder, Colorado. We also connect on the importance of good friendships (and how to form deep connections) later on in life, and how hers inspire her to be a better human — on and off the track. A big thank you to her sponsor at CamelBak for helping to set us up! Man, was I excited for this one. Allyson Felix is officially a hurdler! (Just, not at the actual track.) She's also a total legend. For episode 126, I'm chatting with the most decorated female athlete in track and field history. Felix realized her Olympic dreams early on at age 18, and has been unstoppable ever since. In today's episode, we talk about all of it. She tells me about what it was like to succeed in her sport at a young age, and what it was like to fall short of her goal in back-to-back Games. She tells me about simultaneously tackling college while thriving in her sport, the evolution of emotions through four different Olympic Games, and how she feels about the shift to 2021. We also chat about her exciting new chapter — becoming a mom — and how that has been both the best and scariest challenge of her life. She tells me about her new collection with Athleta, and how she's excited to finally feel like she has value to a sponsor beyond her racing times. A huge, huge thank you to the Athleta team for finally connecting me with one of my original "dream" guests. The first time I heard Jesse Israel tell his story inside the Guggenheim at The Big Quiet, I knew I wanted to know more. The second I knew more, I knew I needed to share his story with the hurdlers. Now the brains behind the mass meditation movement, Israel went to NYU and started his career doing something entirely different — heading up a record label. After signing multi-platinum artists like MGMT, the Los Angeles native started battling crippling anxiety and panic attacks. So, he took a step away from the music industry, and eventually found his way into the meditation space. In episode 124, we chat about his journey between the two, and how he used his experience touring with big bands to concept all that The Big Quiet would become. We also talk about what it was like to host events in some of the country’s most iconic venues (including Madison Square Garden), his best-practice tips for incorporating mediation into your regular routine, and how it felt to go on tour with Oprah (!) at the beginning of this year. Be prepared to be ridiculously inspired. This week, I’m sitting down one-on-one with Nichelle Hines, an actor, activist, and CRO at Cycle House, an LA-based cycling studio. Her passion is wild. In episode 123, she gives me her entire backstory, talking me through a college weight gain (and the loss that followed), then moving to LA from San Francisco to follow her dream to acting. She talks about a tough #hurdlemoment in her career — the writers’ strike in 2007 — which caused her to take on odd jobs including a catering gig at Chateau Marmont. And of course, we chat about how she got into cycling. Other highlights: Her insane story about teaching her first Spin class without any formal training, how she landed at Cycle House, and the special way she’s showing up in the fight for racial justice.
