Embracing discomfort and assessing pain points is necessary for growth as an individual, team and organization. In this episode, Shandel and Melanie discuss the first stage in the Process for Sustainable Growth, which is Pain. The ACTion steps in this stage is: Assess the Gaps, Character, Competencies & Capacity and Trailblaze through the pain. It's important to dig into root causes rather than just symptoms is important to create effective and sustainable change. Character, competencies, and capacities should be assessed to understand where development is needed. Tools like 360 reviews, SWOT analysis and feedback surveys can help objectively evaluate strengths, weaknesses and opportunities for improvement.Leaders must do the difficult work of self-reflection and assume responsibility for issues rather than blaming others. Trailblazing through pain is a privilege that requires courage and humility and creates a path for others to follow. In the Pain stage, it's easy to off ramp into the Cycle of Misery. That happens when we go away from our values, not necessarily intentionally or with negative intentions, but something else gets in the way, such as fear, frustration, or ego. Self-awareness and leaning into our values is key as we assess the pain and find the best path forward.Growth happens in cycles, and periods of pain or discomfort are inevitable and should not be feared but seen as opportunities for learning and improvement. Thanks for joining us - don't forget to subscribe, rate (or like), comment & share!Visit our website and follow us on social media - Facebook, Instagram & LinkedInWe LOVE your feedback & questions - click HERE to share your questions/feedback or email us at podcast@shandelgroup.comSubscribe for our free 66 Seconds with Shandel Group at shandel.com#LeadForClarity #LeadershipDevelopment #Leadership #Growth #ExecutiveCoaching #LeadershipCoaching #EmotionalIntelligence #Clarity #PersonalAccountability #Communication
“My goal in training is to build a student's reflexes not just memorizing a technique. Building reflexes by discarding the drills, and eventually being able to free flow, so you can react to any angle of attack, if you train that way you will never be caught off guard because you are prepared for any line of attack, it doesn't matter the trajectory of the weapon because you have already trained it, as opposed to set techniques that may not fit the situation.” – Graciela CasillasMy guest this episode is Graciela Casillas who is a former Boxing and Kickboxing World Champion. She was the first athlete to simultaneously hold both titles. She was originally a student of Taekwondo and full-contact Karate and a 3rd degree Black Belt in Kenpo and Kodenkan Jujitsu. She was trained as an instructor by legends like Guro Dan Inosanto and Grandmaster Angel Cabales and is currently a college Academic Counselor and Educator. She was awarded Black Belt Magazine's and Inside Kung-Fu Magazine's "Woman of the Year" in 1989 and inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame. In 2020, she was inducted into the International Women's Boxing Hall of Fame. This episode is all about trailblazing your own path in this world. My key takeaway is that as martial artists we should all evolve and develop our own expression and style of movement. We begin our training by imitating and emulating our teachers, but we must continue the path of exploration and discover our strengths and weaknesses, and from their look for our own unique opportunities for growth. From this growth we will learn valuable lessons that will lead to the creation of a better version of ourselves. We also dive deep into teaching and training philosophies and how to discover your own truth. Graciela Casillas is an educator and true martial arts pioneer who inspired paved the way for women in combat sports. Tune in and enjoy a fantastic episode.

BEERS: The boys are on the move again! Will is back from his southern excursion of Charleston and rates Maser, a New England IPA that held its own despite its southern geography. We debate how NEIPA's from the south should be treated - should they be held in the same regard we hold them from our home states? Jake, fresh off trips to St. Louis and Louisville, had a fair share of beer this past week, and rates Upland Brewing's Barrel-Aged Peach Sour Ale he had at their taproom in Jeffersonville, Indiana. Honorable mentions go to Bud Select, fresh on tap at Busch Stadium in St. Louis, and a Charleston favorite in Edmunds Oast. BUSINESS (30:00): AI: everyone's favorite topic. But this year, it's becoming less of a buzzword and more of a reality. So, how can we use AI for our advantage now, and how are some of the biggest brands across the world using it? We bring in Christopher Parisi, President at Trailblaze Marketing and host of the AI Wave podcast, to break it all down for us. We talk about everything from ChatGPT, to "Terminator-level" capabilities, to replacing post-production with AI. Chris also takes us through his journey of how he got to Bryant, a key moment in his life that led him to pivot from accounting to study marketing, and his work with the RI Small Business Coalition to unlock millions of dollars in small business aid. BALLS: Money is flying around in the sports at an unprecedented rate, and the most recent events are no exception. Kylian Mbappe, French soccer phenom, was offered nearly $1 billion to negotiate with Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal. Justin Herbert became the highest paid quarterback in NFL history at over $52 million per year. Jaylen Brown signed a super-max extension of $60 million, accomplishing the same feat across the entire NBA. What is going on and why is money being dished out so fast? Who will be the next mega-deal player and what will their contract be? We finish with predicting some trades across the MLB, including if Shohei Ohtani ends up in a new team. A compelling PR narrative increases your credibility and generates brand awareness. Your business narrative can help in turning ideas into a story that you can share with potential investors and consumers. The core ideas of cultural trends are weaved into such stories, which makes them much more real and appealing from a consumer point of view. As a new and emerging industry, mainstream cannabis brands can leverage this for general education about the products and connect with a new consumer demographic. In this insightful new episode of the Wine Whiskey Weed show, Sid Patel, CEO of Beverage Trade Network, chats with Lisa Weser, Founder of Trailblaze. Here, Lisa explains how a great PR narrative is beneficial for a brand, especially in the cannabis beverage category.

Laugh and learn in a collage of conversation with 'Chef' - Matthew 'Chef' Kwatinetz, Senior Director of Nevada Operations and Board Member of Burning Man Project. He shares with Stuart about the ongoing work to convert our Nevada properties into year-round hubs for bringing Burning Man culture into the world. So much more than an infrastructure project, Chef's team is busy upgrading Gerlach's power and internet, helping locals and staff develop skills, opening up new employment opportunities, and visioning a maker space for Black Rock City creators. They examine the art of urban planning. They celebrate tradition. They explore what's possible beyond our ephemeral city. They imagine what it could look like when Black Rock City spills out of its physical and temporal borders into places beyond the dry lakebed, engaging year-round with art, convenings, and teachings, and living life more secure and expressed. Much has been researched and discussed with burners and locals, from social enterprise to economics, to solar power arrays named after mythical creatures.Burning Man Project Board of Directors: Matthew ‘Chef' KwatinetzNYU New York University Leadership Team: Matthew KwatinetzWelcome to Burner School: Gerlach Workforce Development Center (Burning Man Journal)The Chef and the Power of Community Prototyping (Burning Man Live #18)360VR: GerlachBlack Rock City Placement ProcessLAGI: Land Art Generator Initiative, Fly RanchHaunted West Gerlach (youtube)Göbekli Tepe (wikipedia)

Consumers are awakening to the idea that their dietary choices impact climate change, and while some already consider environmental sustainability when selecting products many more say they would if they had more information – creating a unique marketing opportunity for brands, according to research released last week by the International Food Information Council.
What risks are worth taking? How do you trust yourself to make big decisions when your head and heart are pulling you in different directions? How do you trust your team to blaze a new trail and bring a bold vision to life, especially when you're working together remotely? These questions were at the core of our recent conversation with Carlos Baena, an award-winning animator, director, and entrepreneur. Currently directing Paramount Pictures' forthcoming animated feature film The Tiger's Apprentice (slated for release in 2023), Carlos is someone with a track record of taking risks and trailblazing. In the early 2000s when technology for remote learning and collaboration were just in their infancy, Carlos co-founded the original online animation school AnimationMentor. He later left an established career at Pixar (where he worked on many animated pictures that might have captured your imagination like Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, WALL-E, and Toy Story 3 just to name a few) to take a big risk and produce the Oscar-qualifying animated short La Noria, an innovative endeavor that pushed the edges of genre, technology, and remote collaboration, racked up over 100 awards and was selected for over 150 film festivals worldwide, and led Carlos to co-found Artella, a platform for online collaborative film making. In our conversation, Carlos shares how he thinks about risk-taking and why he has frequently chosen to pursue the road less traveled, how trust has been integral to creating the conditions for successful collaboration in the face of uncertainty, and the role trust plays in facilitating remote work. If you're thinking about risk in terms of your own decision-making or with respect to leading creative and innovative endeavor's remotely, be sure to listen to this episode of the In Trust podcast! Life as a senior school student can be challenging at the best of times. You might be in a great school and have great teachers, but still need that extra bit of help to succeed in your studies. For students at Forest High School, a new initiative called the Trailblazer program was launched to provide that help. It’s a peer tutoring and mentoring program that was created for senior students where the Trailblazers are recently graduated students themselves. Zali van der Veer was one of those graduates and now helps others on their path to high school success. This podcast is brought to you by Sentral. To find out more, visitwww.sentral.com.au

Whether at home or in the office, there are defining qualities and behaviors that produce the best results in business. Today, David Dye and Karin Hurt, #1 bestselling co-authors of Winning Well: A Manager's Guide to Getting Results---Without Losing Your Soul and the new book Courageous Cultures: How to Build Teams of Microinnovators, Problem Solvers, and Customer Advocates, join the show to reveal what they are. But Karin and David explain the most important (and least used) tactic that business leaders can employ to make their work environment thrive. Karin Hurt is the CEO of Let's Grow Leaders and was named on Inc's list of 100 Great Leadership Speakers. David M. Dye is a former city councilman and nonprofit executive. We're going to be doing things a little bit differently today. I'm going to be sharing an interview with one of my favorite clients, Allison Mondel of Sacred Voice Studios, she's based in Maryland, and she teaches coaches and performs. The work that Allison does is truly beautiful. And as we work together, through our AstroBrand™ training, I guided her in her journey, so that she was able to see herself not just as a vocal teacher, but as a vocal visionary changing the way one approaches finding their own voice. In this chat, we're going to talk about her process of working with me, what she loved, her unexpected results and most importantly, the way she committed to herself to trailblaze in her fields.

In many workplaces across the country, managers feel pressured by company leaders to achieve specific goals or levels of productivity, and become focused on winning no matter what it takes, using motivation by fear to get their employees to work faster, harder and for longer hours. These tactics may work in the short term, but lose their effectiveness over the long haul as employees will eventually tune out, burnout, or simply seek employment elsewhere, thus creating morale and turnover issues—a recipe for disaster for any employer. Our guests on HR Works today want to change that. Karin Hurt, Founder of Let’s Grow Leaders, and David Dye, President of Trailblaze, Inc, have authored a new book—Winning Well: A Manager’s Guide to Getting Results-Without Losing Your Soul—which lays the groundwork and provides tools for managers who want to be known for getting results, yet also be someone whom employees will both respect and want to work with.
David M. Dye is one of the most common sense and wonderful management and leadership experts I know. We spent one lunch together getting to know each other and became fast friends. While he's much more soft spoken than me (and a better listener), his words all carry a lot of weight with me - and with the organizations he's touched over the years. Today, we share some lively conversation about management and leadership, and his latest book, co-authored with Karin Hurt, Winning Well. I love this book - and the sub-title explains why: A Manager's Guide to Getting Results - Without Losing Your Soul. Made for a great conversation I know you'll enjoy. Why has a new scheme to encourage people onto our national trails upset some people? For the first of two programmes from Sussex, Helen Mark has her running shoes on along the South Downs Way to find out about a project to encourage long-distance runners out into the countryside. The scheme has sparked controversy with a petition launched against the installation of electronic boxes on several of our 15 national trails. Trailblaze is a pilot project which has been launched by events company Endurance Life in partnership with Natural England to allow runners to take up the challenge of a long distance route whenever they want to rather than as part of a large event. The aim is to run as far as they would like to go, whenever they choose, and enter an electronic timing tag into boxes fitted at points along the way which records their progress. The scheme is currently operating on several of our national trails and the organisers say that this has been created by a team of trail runners who feel that the joy of running is increased greatly when it takes place in a stunning landscape. But walkers and outdoor enthusiasts are questioning the need for this scheme. Many people are concerned about the aesthetics of the scheme and what they see as the 'commercialisation' of the countryside. The electronic boxes, which appear at various points along the trails, have caused concern amongst traditionalists who see them as unnecessary and ugly and there is also concern about the pressure on the footpaths and how much the natural environment will be affected and damaged. For this week's Open Country, Helen Mark dons her running shoes and heads out onto the South Down Way where she meets Stuart Mills, a keen runner who has taken up the Trailblaze challenge. Helen also hears from Andrew Barker of Endurance Life and Tess Jackson, from Natural England who are behind the scheme about their reasons for setting it up. Nigel Buxton, whose home is close to the national trail and who moved there specifically to enjoy walking on the chalk of the Downs, tells Helen about his unhappiness with the electronic boxes that are found along the South Downs Way and Helen hears from outdoor writer, Mark Richards, about his concern for the welfare of the paths that we walk. Presenter: Helen Mark Producer: Helen Chetwynd.
