In this episode, the boiys meet Nick Gornick, a coach and PT, and they discuss various topics related to running, including injuries, training zones, and the use of super shoes. They also touch on the importance of shoe rotation and transitioning to different shoe drops. Nick provides tremndous and in depth insights and recommendations based on his expertise. He provides insights on transitioning to zero drop shoes, changing shoe drops during training, and the ideal shoe drop for different runners. He also talks about the treatment of plantar fasciitis and offers tips for preventing and managing injuries. Additionally, he shares advice on ramping up training volume and intensity, as well as the importance of mental fortitude when dealing with injuries. Nick also mentions the benefits of strength training and recovery aids, and provides information about his coaching services and training plans. Nick can be found on both Instagram and Threads with the handle @RebuiltPT, and you can reach him on his website as well, as www.rebuiltpt.com Takeaways Training in different shoe drops can help strengthen different muscles and prepare the foot for a variety of stresses. Super shoes can change biomechanics and may increase the risk of injury if not used appropriately. Using a combination of perceived effort and data (such as heart rate) can be beneficial in training. Considering factors like humidity and dew point can help adjust training efforts and prevent overexertion. Transitioning to zero drop shoes should be done gradually to allow the body to adapt. Shoe rotation is important to prevent overuse injuries and maintain foot strength. Transitioning to zero drop shoes should be done gradually, starting with shorter runs and gradually increasing the frequency of wearing them. Changing shoe drops during training should be done at an increased frequency rather than all at once, and it is beneficial to incorporate them into warm-up, cool-down, and shorter aerobic runs. The ideal shoe drop depends on the individual's running style and preferences, but staying in the middle range allows for strategic use of different shoe drops to stress or offload certain areas. Treatment for plantar fasciitis includes manual therapy, strengthening of the calf and foot muscles, improving ankle mobility, and stretching and strengthening the hips and knees. When ramping up training volume, it is recommended to increase mileage by 5-20% for a few weeks and then stay at that new mileage for a while before making further increases. Intensity matters more than volume when it comes to acute injuries, and sudden increases in intensity can lead to injuries. Recovery aids such as foam rolling and massage guns can provide short-term relief, but their effectiveness in reducing overall injury risk is unclear. When dealing with injuries on race day, the decision to push through or pull the plug depends on the individual's goals and the potential risks of exacerbating the injury. Mental fortitude plays a crucial role in pushing through endurance pain during races, while focusing on the progress made during the recovery process can help maintain motivation. Preventing injuries involves avoiding acute changes in intensity and volume, ensuring adequate recovery between sessions, and incorporating strength training into regular training routines. When coming back from an injury, it is important to focus on the successes and progress made, and to recognize that pain during training does not necessarily indicate a worsening condition. Mental tricks for dealing with injuries include reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth, setting realistic expectations, and celebrating small victories along the way. running, injuries, training zones, super shoes, shoe rotation, shoe drops, running injuries, shoe drop, zero drop shoes, plantar fasciitis, training volume, training intensity, mental fortitude, strength training, recovery aids, coaching services, training plans --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thetrailtrashcast/support

Lisa Gornick has been hailed by NPR as “one of the most perceptive, compassionate writers of fiction in America…immensely talented and brave.” She is the author of four previous novels—most recently The Peacock Feast and Louisa Meets Bear. In this episode, Lisa chats with Marrie Stone about her latest novel, Ana Turns. Ana is turning 60, which is cause for reflection on her sexless marriage, her 7-year affair, her worries about her only child who's doing some reflecting of their own, her arguably cruel and emotionally unavailable mother, and much more. In addition to unpacking how Lisa rendered these characters and their chorus of voices, they chat about how to manage time and backstory in a novel, dealing with contemporary issues in sensitive ways, thoughts on sensitivity readers (with a brief reference to Ian McEwan's thoughts on the same), and weaving in subplots, among other topics. Lisa also shares some psychotherapeutic wisdom from her days as a practicing therapist including unpacking writers' fears about telling their own stories authentically because of who it might hurt, the right to tell ones' stories, and how to protect others along the way. She also shares some additional insights about how her work in psychotherapy impacts her writing process on Patreon. What Is to Be Done? In her luminous biography Emma Goldman: Revolution as a Way of Life (Yale UP, 2011), Vivian Gornick brings us back to this question, originally made by Lenin after a novel which suggests that in order to achieve egalitarianism and sexual liberation, revolutionaries have to live “as though hunted:” no romance, no sex, no friends, no conversation. This was the revolutionary tradition from - and against - which legendary anarchist feminist Emma Goldman sprung. Goldman refused the austere image of the revolutionary. For her, sex, passion, and love were inextricable from the human experience, and thus also inextricable from political life. She maintained, as Gornick says, a “timeless hunger for living life on a grand scale.” In her own—now famous—words: “If I can't dance, I don't want to be in your revolution.” Goldman had immigrated from Lithuania to Rochester, New York in 1885 and became America's "most dangerous woman" by the powers that be of her time. Gornick, the radical feminist critic celebrated for Fierce Attachments (1987) and The Romance of American Communism (1977), recounts Goldman's progression as an anarchist and feminist. Goldman's feminism was often ambiguous. But Gornick suggests that precisely these conflicts explain her continued influence over generations of feminists after her. On the podcast, we spoke about Goldman's radical political program and their resonance in our time. Gornick also wrote an original preface for a new Goldman reader from Warbler Press, The Essential Emma Goldman—Anarchism, Feminism, Liberation (2022). Learn more about your ad choices. Together Gornick and Nunez consider the inescapable evil that is humiliation; the unevenness of power; its connections to vulnerability and vengefulness; and the dire need to think well of ourselves. Later they unpack the concept of “sturdiness” in one's voice and discover the lines in storytelling through a surrogated versus an unsurrogated self. One day in 1970, the Village Voice sent writer Vivian Gornick to cover a women’s-liberation gathering on Bleecker Street. She came back a radical feminist. And it was her articles in the Voice that helped spread the word about the burgeoning gender equality movement that came to be known as second wave feminism. Since then Gornick has written many books including her latest Taking a Long Look and her celebrated memoir Fierce Attachments. We walked through the streets of Greenwich Village talking about all the things that make a long life worth living. “Now What?” is produced with the help of Steve Zimmer, Tay Glass and Alex Wolfe. Edmund Gosse. Thomas De Quincey. James Baldwin. For Vivian Gornick, what connects these writer's disparate oeuvres is that although each pursued other genres—poetry, journalism, novels, or plays—their “significant work turns out to reside in a memoir” (or personal essays, in Baldwin's case). In an essay in the December issue of Harper's Magazine, Gornick nominates to this list Storm Jameson, a prolific English novelist whose autobiography, Journey from the North, is a prime example of a writer finding her voice—all the more striking in Jameson's case because she made the discovery near the end of a long and, in Gornick's estimation, otherwise middling career. In the immediacy of self-disclosure, something clicked for Jameson—but why? Gornick, who struggled at novel writing herself before hitting her stride in memoirs such as Fierce Attachments and The Odd Woman and the City, has “something of a vested interest in this mysterious matter of a writer's natural métier.… I was well into my thirties,” she writes, “before I understood that I was born for the memoir.” In this episode of the podcast, Gornick begins with a reading from the arresting first pages of Journey from the North. In the conversation that follows, she and Harper's web editor Violet Lucca discuss Jameson's life and legacy; the perennial excuse of “writing down” to make ends meet; the questionable value of the “autofiction” label; and Gornick's reading (and rereading) habits during the pandemic. My guest for this episode is the talented Deena Gornick, an executive and board level coach, facilitator and writer and since recording this back at the end of 2019 we've become good friends too - albeit remotely! I have a number of interviews like this one that were recorded last year that I have yet to release as other priorities have had to come first but it's been exciting to listen back to these conversations and reflect on them with a new light - especially after the challenges of 2020. In this episode we discuss how Deena found her calling as a coach - how she started out as an actor, but soon discovered that she enjoyed helping other people to perform and find themselves much more than she enjoyed acting. We actually ended up chatting for hours so it was really hard to cut this interview down but it's still a meaty and interesting discussion about courage, creativity and most of all the search for confidence. I hope you enjoy this episode, please subscribe wherever you get your podcasts and if you could please leave a rating and review, this all helps to get more people to hear the Who's Next stories. You can follow the podcast on @whosnextpoduk -- and to find out more about Deena check out her instagram @deenagornickexecutivecoach or Twitter @deenagornick.

Several of her projects include a video series for PBS on Youth Entrepreneurship, Screenagers, a film about growing up in the digital age, and now Angst, a documentary on anxiety to help raise awareness about anxiety and lower the stigma of talking about our mental health. I was honored to get to know her during my initiative to bring Angst to San Antonio which has now been show to over 10 different schools, community organizations and churches with more on the schedule. Karin’s passionate about Angst, a film that featured Michael Phelps, was inspired in part by her own journey searching for help with her teenage son’s anxiety disorder and learning how much hope and help there is for treating mental health challenges. What you’ll learn about in this episode: The importance of setting aside a little time each morning before jumping on email and any social media to ponder the things that should be accomplished that day, get into a good rhythm, and prepare ourselves to make a difference in the lives of others How participating in sports and other social activities helps foster a team building spirit as we seek to achieve common goals with our colleagues at work and strengthen networking opportunities Why successful people focus on things they are good at, highlight them, and use them as a foundation to enhance success in other areas of life How taking pride in watching a firm grow over a period of time is both personally and professionally reassuring The importance of remembering our faith and abilities during moments when we may fear what is on the landscape, such as signs that a firm may experience a difficult period or some other uncertainty The reasons leaders set high standards, deliver on the expectations of their customers, and make impactful changes to accomplish the firm's goals The value of seeking quality work-life balance, pursuing opportunities that provide an unlimited potential to grow, and never getting comfortable sitting still in a single, stagnant place - even if a person stays at the same company and in a position with the same assigned duties How focusing on loyalty to customers, building long-term relationships with them, and working hard to keep them loyal to the organization is a rewarding experience for all parties involved The significance for those who work in marketing and sales to become skillful relationship builders above and beyond their talents as salespersons The significance of nurturing and sustaining our partnerships in the larger community  Ways to contact Andrea: Email: agornick@imageoneway.com Website: www.imageoneway.com LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/andreagornick

Her reputation as such was made with the publication of her first memoir Fierce Attachment (1987), about her relationship with her overbearing mother. Her latest foray into the genre The Odd Woman & the City covers a lot of ground: friendship, feminism, class, sex, living alone at 79, and New York. It’s part paean and part elegy – Gornick spoke for many of us recently when she told The Paris Review that she would have liked to have been invited to better parties. At last month's True Story: Non-Fiction at KGB Bar, famed essayist, journalist and critic Vivian Gornick talked about womanhood, working and life as a woman worker. KGB curator Erin Edmison introduced the night with a story of how she came to first read Gornick's work. Bon Mots Gornick on making work her priority: "The only important thing, I told myself, was work. I must teach myself to work. If I worked, I'd have what I needed. I'd be a person in the world. What would it matter, then, that I was giving up love? As it turned out, it mattered."  Gornick on her sacrifices for work: "I love my hardened heart. I've loved it all these years. But the loss of romantic love can still tear at it." Gornick on her place in the working world: "Clearly what I have here is—what I've lived on and with and all the rest of it—is what's called an elitist preoccupation. The whole world of ungratifying work, of mechanical work, of work that is drudgery still exists." True Story: The Non-Fiction Reading Series at KGB returns in the spring.
