It's unusual to see a new V10 engine go into production these days with the V10 and V12s engines of previous Formula 1, Prototype (LMP) and Grand Touring classes long being replaced by V8s and V6s, but Rodin Cars are bucking the trend with their RC.TEN engine project.Mike Gartrell of  @RodinCars  runs us through some of the ins and outs of this V10 project, including how partners like Neil Brown Engineering have helped with the design and  @PanklRacingSystems  with production. However, with low quantity runs costing as much as €45,000 ($49,000 USD) per crank, the long-term plan is to bring the manufacturing in-house to their New Zealand base. The 2024 World Time Attack Challenge was the first outing and test of the engine as part of the Rodin SINTURA project, a controversial carbon monocoque chassis that has been given an exemption to compete at the event.RC.TEN Specs:3998cc - (244ci) 72° naturally aspirated V1012,000rpm185bhp/litreCast Aliminium head and block with Nikasil coated steel liners86mm bore, 68.8m strokeDOHCBosch direct injection system running 102 RON fuel15:1 compression ratio720bph @ 11,000rpm - N/A goalsTwin Turbo Capable160kgLink G5 ECU & electronics package

Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru WRX TR Keynote Joy of Driving Week

America on the Road

This week America on the Road proves yet again that there is more to driving than just getting from Point A to Point B in a thoroughly rational but also thoroughly uninvolving crossover SUV. We experienced this firsthand as we road-tested two exceedingly enjoyable sports cars — the legendary Mazda MX-5 Miata and the almost equally legendary Subaru WRX. The 2024 WRX TR trim that Co-Host Chris Teague tested offers improved performance and handling from its rally-inspired chassis and suspension. It features a Brembo braking system with six-piston front and two-piston rear calipers, larger pads and rotors, and a larger brake master cylinder. Suspension enhancements include stiffer springs, revised damping rates, and a retuned steering rack for better control and response. The TR comes with 19-inch satin gray alloy wheels and Bridgestone Potenza S007 summer tires. Inside, it has Recaro seats with black and gray Ultrasuede, red stitching, and an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat. With its six-speed manual transmission, the 2024 WRX TR is base-priced at $41,655. How does it compare to Teague's GR Corolla? He'll tell us in his report. Across the country, Host Jack Nerad got the chance to test the 2024 MX-5 Miata Grand Touring trim, which received significant updates enhancing performance and comfort. Powered by a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder engine delivering 181 horsepower and 151 pound-feet of torque, the MX-5 Miata retains its classic front-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout. The Sport and Club trims come exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission, while the Grand Touring we tested offers either a manual or a six-speed automatic. In addition to Kinematic Posture Control, the Miata now offers a revamped electric power steering system with a new steering rack and software enhancements for smoother steering and better precision. Exterior updates include new LED headlights and taillights and additional color options. Inside, the 2024 Miata features a revised center console, an 8.8-inch infotainment display with added touch functionality, and Mazda's first Alexa integration. But does all this new stuff blunt the winning Miata experience? Nerad will have the answer in this show. In the news this week, Honda has given an in-depth briefing about its upcoming all-new lineup of electric vehicles, and the concepts are startling. We'll give you the details. General Motors has just ditched a major brand name as it does an about-face in its electric vehicle strategy. We'll tell you what brand they are turning their back on and give you our comments. If you are thinking about buying a new car soon, you should be aware that a substantial percentage of buyers are now taking on massive monthly payments when they make a purchase. Will you be one of them? And in the True Crime Files Automotive Edition, there is a new development in the trial of a major figure in the Volkswagen Dieselgate scandal. Is there prison in his future? This week, our special guest is Chevrolet bicyclist safety expert Mike Fry. The new Chevy Traverse has a system that is particularly useful in preventing vehicle-bicycle accidents, and we'll talk with him about that and about bicycle safety. We think you'll enjoy the discussion. So we have a lot of show for you this week. Thanks for joining us, and don't forget to look for new content on our YouTube and Rumble channels. America on the Road is brought to you by Driving Today.com, Mercury Insurance, and EMLandsea.com , the publisher of Nerad's latest book, Dance in the Dark, which is available HERE on Amazon.com

The Lucid Motors Air sedan joined the fray in the luxury electric car space only a few years ago, and the landscape is constantly changing. While the company gears up to launch a much-needed ‘ute, the Lucid Air still fills an important space for the brand: it exists. Spread across four price tiers, the Lucid Air is fighting against legacy BEV stalwarts from Tesla like the Model S, and the more recent ventures into the space from Audi, Porsche and so many other automakers. This Lucid Air Touring sits below the flagship Sapphire and Grand Touring and boasts 620 hp from its twin-motor layout. The folks at Lucid say that this combination is good enough for zero to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and a 140 mph top speed, all while weighing two and a half tons.  On this episode of Quick Spin, Autoweek executive editor Tom Murphy hops behind the wheel of the '24 Lucid Air Touring and puts it through its paces. Murphy takes you on a guided tour of the Lucid Air Touring and highlights some of his favorite features while describing what it's like to live with. Later, Murphy takes you along for a live drive review. Adding to these segments, Murphy chats with host Wesley Wren about the Lucid Air, its space in the marketplace, and more. Closing the show, the pair breaks down what makes the '24 Lucid Air Touring special.

As co-hosts of The Weekly Driver Podcast, Bruce Aldrich and I have for the past several years picked the top cars of the year at the end of the calendar year. This year, as we do most often, Bruce and I interview a guest on the podcast and then drive the week's review vehicle to lunch. We often extend the day to further drive the vehicle, take images and share our opinions. The 2023 Lucid Air is The Weekly Driver Podcast's 2023 Best Car of the Year. Image © Bruce Aldrich/2023. Bruce has certain interests and knows the mechanics of cars and trucks far better than I do. I write reviews of vehicles for several publications, including TheWeeklyDriver.com since 2004. I usually drive every week for a week. Bruce has contributed images for dozens of vehicles and has produced every podcast episode. Like we do every year, we selected best-of-the-year lists is based only on the model year corresponding to the same calendar year. The plush interior of the Lucid Air. Image courtesy of the manufacturer. This year we individually chose our favorite vehicles of the year based on 2023 models of 37 vehicles fully reviewed. As has also occurred several times, we both selected the same vehicle as The Weekly Driver Podcast's best vehicle of the year. It's the 2023 Lucid Air. The Lucid Air (Grand Touring) and Lucid Air (Pure) both were reviewed. Here's what I wrote in part in my review of the Lucid Air (Grand Touring): "Available in Pure, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Performance, and the new-for-2023 Sapphire trims, the Lucid Air is a high-performance, handsome, and the-future-is-now vehicle that provides a new definition of a sedan. "Spacious and wide-bodied, the reviewed Lucid Air (Grand Touring) has 819 horsepower and a 112-kWh battery that provides the dual-motor, all-wheel-drive wonder with a 516-mile range and acceleration from 0-to-60 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds." "For performance enthusiasts and the electric vehicle obsessed, the stats are industry-best numbers. For the rest of us, sub-three-second efforts may cause lightheadedness. Conversely, driving from San Francisco to Los Angeles and halfway home isn't possible in many gasoline-powered vehicles. A recharge isn't required for long hours behind the racing-styled Lucid wheel." Please join Bruce and me as we further discuss the upstart Lucid lineup and also reveal the rest of our respective Best-of-the-Year lists.

Because it's unabashedly what a Raptor should be. And everything that Jason ostensibly hates in cars: It's heavy, it's inefficient, it's loud, it's an automatic, it has forced induction, it doesn't go around corners or stop, and it's huge. But it's also perfect. There's the Mk1 Volkswagen Golf, with the Clipper Kit Cabriolet and the Citi versions, the BMW E30, the Jaguar Series III to XJ40 to X300 to X308. And what if all the Radwood-era cars only got prettier because of relaxed and harmonized bumper standards, like the W116 Mercedes S-Class did when it was replaced with the W126. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 1st November. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. NON-TESLA SUPERCHARGER PILOT GOES LIVE IN NETHERLANDS - Today we are launching our Non-Tesla Supercharger pilot at 10 Supercharger locations in the Netherlands. - With this pilot, 10 stations are now accessible to Dutch Non-Tesla EV drivers via the Tesla app - More customers using the Supercharger network enables faster expansion. Our goal is to learn and iterate quickly, while continuing to aggressively expand the network, so we can eventually welcome both Tesla and Non-Tesla drivers at every Supercharger worldwide. - We're starting with a select number of sites so that we can review the experience, monitor congestion and assess feedback before expanding. Future sites will only be opened to Non-Tesla vehicles if there is available capacity. - As a Tesla driver you benefit from the seamless integration of charge post and vehicle, optimized route planning and battery pre-conditioning. With your Tesla, you'll also have access to the lowest Supercharger pricing. - Download the Tesla app (version 4.2.3 or higher) for iOS or Android and create a Tesla Account. Select 'Charge Your Non-Tesla' and find your Supercharger site. Add your payment method, plug-in your car, select a stall and tap 'Start Charging.'  Select 'Stop Charging' to complete your session. - Pricing for Non-Tesla drivers reflects additional costs incurred to support charging a broad range of vehicles and adjustments to our sites to accommodate these vehicles. Rates vary by site, and you can view charging prices in the Tesla app. The per kWh price to charge can be lowered with a charging membership. - Certain Supercharger site layouts may not be suitable for some cars. Please do not obstruct other cars by parking over the lines if the cable cannot comfortably reach your car. When member BahamaTodd updated his MyChevrolet app to version 5.7.0, he clicked through to the Energy Assist page and found three GM electric vehicles listed, plus their estimated range figures on a 100% charge. One was the 2022 Chevrolet Bolt, rated for 259 miles, the second was the 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV, rated for 247 miles. The third was an unexpected entry, being the 2022 GMC Hummer EV pickup, listed as able to go 334 miles on a full charge. - The figures for both Bolts are the official EPA estimates. The mileage figure for the Hummer is a mystery, as is why it's popped up here in the MyChevrolet app instead of the MyGMC app. The EPA hasn't certified the 2022 Hummer yet, so that's not the source. - With pre-production of the Edition 1 slated to begin at GM's Factory Zero any day now, answers shouldn't be long in coming. Original Source : https://www.autoblog.com/2021/10/30/hummer-ev-range-estimate-mychevrolet-app/ NEW 2023 MINI COUNTRYMAN TO GROW AND GET EV OPTION - Mini's all-important third-generation Countryman, which will play a crucial role in the brand's pure-electric reinvention, has broken cover on public roads for the first time. - Due in 2023, the big-selling crossover will join the closely related BMW X1 in being offered with a choice of pure-electric and combustion powertrains, and will be built on the same line as its X1 sibling in Leipzig, Germany. - The X1 is likely to be launched before the Countryman, given that near-ready prototypes have been testing on public roads for several months, and that will provide further details on the powertrain offering for Mini's largest model. - The EV option for each is likely to be an all-new powertrain, because the existing electric Mini hatchback uses a relatively small-capacity battery and motor and the slightly larger BMW iX3 is rear driven. Original Source : https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/new-2023-mini-countryman-grow-and-get-ev-option WATCH HISTORIC LUCID RALLY WITH 20 LUCID AIR DREAM EDITION CARS - Today is the historic launch of the Lucid Air Dream Edition, the first electric car with more than 500 miles (800 km) of range on a single charge. - Multiple cars were handed over by the company's CEO Peter Rawlinson. As we can see in the video shared by Len Devanna, Head of Digital Experience at Lucid (and re-uploaded on YouTube), about 20 Lucid Airs departed for a Lucid Rally. - Lucid will deliver 520 Dream Edition cars (in two specs - Range or Performance). Then, the less expensive Air Grand Touring, Air Touring and Air will follow. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544466/lucid-air-dream-edition-rally/ LUCID AIR SPECS REVEALED: 118 KWH DREAM PACK, 112 KWH GRAND TOURING - The limited Dream Edition version is equipped with a 118 kWh battery pack, featuring 22 modules totaling 6,600 cylindrical cells - The Grand Touring version has about a 6 kWh smaller battery - 112 kWh - We believe that those cells are supplied by Samsung SDI, Lucid's first supplier, announced in December 2016 (see the original press release here). In 2020, the company announced that the battery cells for "standard version" cars will be supplied by LG Chem's LG Energy Solution. - One of the Lucid's key elements is the 900 V battery architecture, which allows for increased efficiency. It also makes it easier to deliver up to around 300 kW of charging power, which allows it to take just about 20 minutes to replenish 300 miles of range. - The Lucid Air is the first high-end model that is expected to be sold in quite significant volumes, starting with 20,000 in 2022. In the 2023, it should be joined by an even higher-volume, large SUV - "Gravity." By 2025, both should be sold at over 120,000 per year (including 42,000 Air and 86,000 Gravity). - EPA range: Grand Touring (19") - 516 miles (830 km), Grand Touring (21") - 469 miles (755 km) - 0-60 mph (96.5 km/h) timeDream Edition Performance (19") - 3.3 seconds Dream Edition Performance (21") - 3.0 seconds Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/544455/lucid-air-118kwh-battery-112kwh/ NEW LONGER-RANGE MG ZS EV GOES ON SALE - Priced from £28,495 (incl. PiCG), the renewed model is available with a larger 72kWh Long Range battery, delivering up to 273 miles of range. That's a substantial increase over the outgoing model, which has a combined range of 163 miles. It comes with an onboard AC charger that enables up to 7kW fast charging or up to 76kW DC rapid charging, giving a 0-100% charge in as little as 42 minutes. - The updated MG ZS EV also features Vehicle-to-Load capability now as standard, enabling drivers to charge or power other external equipment, for example, an electric bike, using an accessory charging cable. - all models come with the new MG iSmart connectivity system, which offers connection via a smartphone app and enables a wide array of vehicle functions to be monitored remotely, including vehicle status and battery charge level. Drivers can stop and start charging, remotely lock and unlock the car, set the air conditioning and heating, and activate the windscreen demister. - The entry-level SE comes with auto air con, bi-function LED headlights, adaptive cruise control, keyless entry and push-button start, vehicle-to-load charging and 360-degree parking camera. - Trophy model, priced at £30,995 (incl. PiCG), adds a panoramic roof and leather-style seats, along with roof rails, heated front seats, electric driver's seat adjustment, rain-sensing wipers and wireless phone charging. - Trophy Connect, which adds iSmart with live services (weather, traffic and Amazon Prime) and is priced at £31,495 after PiCG. That's another strong point of Lucid. The main things, like the powertrain, are ready according to Lucid, although details - both with the hardware and software - as well as fine-tuning, still require some work. Lucid Air Grand Touring is a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive with an expected range of 517 miles (832 km) and 800 HP. The price starts at $139,000." [audio]  https://insideevs.com/reviews/509052/2022-lucid-air-ride/?utm_source=RSS&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=RSS-all-articles MODEL S PLAID DELIVERY EVENT JUNE 3RD"Tesla hasn't delivered one of the luxury sedans since the start of the year thanks to a computer chip shortage and a redesign of the car, once the company's only offering. Since then, CEO Elon Musk has been promising the return of the Model S was around the corner, saying as recently as April that deliveries would resume in May." says CNN: "Musk's tweet said the June 3 event will also feature the debut of a "Plaid" version of the Model S. "Fastest production car ever," Musk tweeted about the updated Model S. "0 to 60 mph in under 2 seconds. No matter the eye-popping acceleration or other new design quirks, however, the long delay in bringing the Model S back to consumers is proof that the former Tesla mainstay has become something of an afterthought for the company, said Dan Ives, tech analyst for Wedbush Securities. It's still important that Tesla continue to offer the Model S and Model X, Ives said. Given that their prices can easily top $100,000, the high-end vehicles can generate far bigger profit margins than the Model 3 or Model Y." https://edition.cnn.com/2021/05/20/business/elon-musk-tesla-model-s-return/index.html VOLKSWAGEN TAKES #1 AND #2 IN GERMAN MARKET"The German plugin vehicle market scored over 50,000 registrations last month, with both core plugin vehicle powertrains rising fast — +413% for BEVs and +380% for PHEVs year over year (YoY). Last month’s plugin vehicle share ended at 22% (10% BEV), in line with the yearly tally of 22% (10% BEV). This market is firmly in The Disruption Zone." writes Jose Pontes for CleanTechnica: "olkswagen leads the way, taking both 1st place and 2nd place. The e-Up took the top spots (Behind it, the Volkswagen ID.3, Hyundai Kona EV, and Volkswagen Golf PHEV all benefited from the Tesla Model 3’s off month and climbed a position each, which they will likely lose again in the next couple of months.) . That’s right, the little e-Up earned its third win in a row, a surprising performance for the veteran model. Interestingly, among the top 8 models, only two are PHEVs, which would lead one to think that BEVs outsold plugin hybrids. However, that actually that wasn’t the case, as PHEVs represented 53% of plugin registrations in the country in April." In Germany they're now delivering the Audi Q4 e-tron and Skoda Enyaq. https://cleantechnica.com/2021/05/22/volkswagen-takes-1-and-2-in-hot-german-plugin-vehicle-market-22-auto-market-share/ TESLA INSTALLS MEGACHARGERS AT FRITO-LAY"Frito-Lay Inc. is installing Megachargers for Tesla Semi at its Northern California Warehouse. Upon completion of the installation, the company will have the first known charger for the Semi electric truck." according to Tesmanian: "They will serve the first 15 of 100 electric trucks ordered by PepsiCo, which are due to be delivered this year. Tesla's new chargers will be installed alongside existing chargers. At the moment, it remains unknown how many Megachargers will be installed, and how they will look. However, the site plan indicates that a Megapack battery will be installed there, which is most likely needed to stabilize the grid." https://www.tesmanian.com/blogs/tesmanian-blog/tesla-installs-megacharges-in-frito-lay-as-delivery-of-15-semi-truck-approaches DANTAXI & E.ON LAUNCH CHARGING HUBIt will be easier to hail a fully charged electric taxi in Copenhagen. Most of the city's current approximately 300 electric taxis are a part of Dantaxi, and for the drivers, the problem of finding an available charging station has grown so big that the capacity of the in-demand zero-emission vehicles cannot be fully utilized” says Dantaxi's commercial director. The five ultra-fast chargers can charge up to ten taxis at a time. The ultra-fast chargers deliver the absolute fastest charging on the market, making them particularly important for taxis as they are not stationary for long periods of time unlike private cars. Ultra-fast chargers can charge up to 300 kW. https://www.facebook.com/dantaxi4x48/photos/4475540289140275/ HOW THE ELECTRIC FORD F-150 COMPARES TO THE TESLA CYBERTRUCK, RIVIAN R1T"Really, this is a two-horse race between the Rivian R1T and the F-150. Based on price alone, the Ford might possibly move more units. The Lightning's base price of just $39,794 before incentives is extremely attractive for an EV, especially a full-sized pickup. The torque rating is also excellent, as is the payload and horsepower for both trims. The range is lacking slightly in the base trim at an estimated 230 miles, although it's likely a conservative number based to what we've seen with EVs from Ford and other OEMs." says The Drive: "The Rivian has the same range for its higher price tag and is positioned as a more luxurious vehicle. The top trim R1T is claimed to have 800+ horsepower, and the truck is available with 22-inch wheels. The Cybertruck is not really comparable here until more precise specifications for the production models are released. They will later be asked to place an actual order." https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2021/05/21/ford-ceo-says-automaker-has-more-than-44-500-f-150-lightning-deposits/5204444001/   QUESTION OF THE WEEK ANSWERS - WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM RAJEEV NARAYANI would like to see an electric Ambulance become available. Currently patient care in the ones we have are cramped affairs. In many it’s challenging to have more than one EMT working on the patient in the patient compartment. So much so that often patient stabilization has to happen on scene prior to transporting to the hospital. Also the vehicles tend also to spend a lot of time just idling wasting gas. An ambulance could have more space, and waste less fuel. ABCI think the two best special vehicles to go EV are police cars and ambulances. I live in a smaller Suburban Neighborhood with the streets combined only covering about 54 miles vs the 9700 mile in London. So both don’t have travel far to get anywhere (Average 911 response here is a little over two minutes for majority of people (my house is within a minute or so of PD) in the city and patrol at slow street speeds stopping often. On top of that most ambulances stay in a station all day and can constantly charge and have a much more pleasant experience at idle . Our local department already know this with there newer Explorer hybrid which for the most part idles well of the small batterie. So they would probably wouldn’t mind an EV to replace the next cruiser they wreck (Why they have the explorer*). So a mustang mach-e(cost within 4 grand of current explorer interceptor even if it doesn’t have the upgrades it gets) or a converted e transit for an ambulance would work great. Fire engines probably won’t work because of there insane weight here in the states (15,890Kg) MARK RICHARDSI was at Sea World in San Diego a year ago (right before the pandemic).  They had these big, smelly, noisy diesel tour buses that takes you around the park.  These go in big circles all day, and probably don’t put 50 miles a day on, and they never really go above 20MPH.  But, they are sitting idling most of the day waiting at the stops.  This is a PERFECT place to put in an EV bus. You could even do wireless charging at each stop, and keep a pretty small battery! Many cities also have these tour buses that drive you around the city and show you all the landmarks.  Again, a perfect use case for an EV.  They have all night to charge, do relatively few low speed miles. Setting aside the pollution, think how nice it would be to get rid of all the smell and noise from these behemoths.  MICHAEL HEYMANSki slope groomer.  Many ski slopes are advertise 100% renewable electricity for things like their lifts but at night they bring out loud smelly grooming equipment and run them up and down the slopes. These things have all day to charge and like a low center of gravity. STEPHEN TROYERI think it's a tie between postal trucks and school busses.  Both have fixed routes, they could do a lot of regen with the constant stopping, and both would be more enjoyable to everyone if they were quiet and free of fumes.  ROBERT GRACEAs to the question, I know that it is technically difficult, for a lot of reasons, but the thing that we need most is some sort of trans-oceanic airliner with zero carbon emissions.  They represent a large source of CO2. Maybe hydrogen?  QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you have an opinion on hydrogen power for personal transport? Yes or No, both good answers, and if yes then what do you think? Email me your thoughts and I’ll read them out on Sunday – hello@evnewsdaily.com

Mercedes-Benz believes its new EQS sedan will redefine the all-electric luxury vehicle segment as it competes against the Tesla Model S Plaid+ and the Lucid Air Grand Touring (which both won't release until 2022). When it arrives at dealerships in the fall of 2021, the EQS will be the first long-range EV from Mercedes available to buy in the US, beating out the EQC compact SUV, which has been delayed indefinitely. A black and pink Ferrari coils and loops around the Mugello Circuit, just outside Florence, and guns across the finish line at 170 miles per hour. The roar of its engine echoes throughout the Tuscan countryside. This sleek ride isn’t your typical commercial sports car, it’s a Ferrari 488 GTE — a hyper-tuned machine built for endurance racing, with a cockpit made of carbon fiber and rebar steel.  Steering behind a wheel full of buttons is 27-year-old Michelle Gatting, an ambitious pilot from Denmark. Related: In Spain after lockdown, soccer resumes for men — but not for womenGatting started riding go-karts at the age of 7. JEFF STERNS CONNECTED THROUGH CARS

Jeff Sterns 0:00 So about the new Roma very, very interesting. It's a new v eight, two plus. Now what's interesting is they say two plus but they don't say two plus two. I think you'd have just as much luck getting someone in the backseat of a 911. Don't get me wrong if you had to get somebody across town, maybe sitting a little sideways, it's workable, but you wouldn't want to do any Grand Touring from the backseat. So Ferrari's idea is that many Ferrari's from the past that made both automotive and Italian design history, thanks to their elegance, sophistication and timeless lines. The Roma's design took its inspiration from the concept of sporty elegance celebrated in the most legendary Grand Touring Ferrari of the 60s. The most striking example of those are the wildly successful 250 GTS include including not just the lusso, but also the four cedars that were favorites of Enzo himself, Enzo Ferrari who were talking about, such as the 250 GT two plus two. These cars were front engine, simple, elegant, two plus two fastback coupe design. The Roma shares many of these characteristics and embodies an extremely modern design language. The pure, refined, not loud, perfect proportions cleverly conceal Ferrari's power and sportiness and the multi award winning VA engine punches out over 600 horsepower, and really underscores the perfect marriage of performance sportiness and elegance created by this new berlinetta berlinetta means coupe. So let's talk about the look of this car. So it's very understated. The front of the car looks like it was sculpted from a single block of metal created an overhanging shark nose effect on the car, it is absolutely stunning. The wide front hood or bonnet, as they say in Europe, and fenders, they say wings. In Europe, they flow into one another and it's a very powerful contributor to the design. But it's really effortlessly harmonious if I were to put it into my own words. engine cooling is done by just some small perforated surfaces only were strictly necessary, as opposed to kind of really accenting the vents. I mean, if we think about the mid rear engine cars, or you have the scoop coming in behind the door or in the door, you know, etc, which was kind of a Ferrari trademark, this is going the other way. So the V eight turbo, making 611 horsepower at 7500 RPM has an unbelievable instantaneous throttle response, which I find interesting, considering it's everything's drive by wire now. I mean, you're not pulling the cable to the six carbs. Right. So amazing throttle action. And this is based on or thanks to what's called variable boost management. So this is the turbo not like the old days not needing to wait for four or 5000 RPMs to flip the switch the V eight with a dual clutch gearbox, of course, that's the only gearbox available now, I love the concept of a dual clutch gearbox. I mean, obviously, a human can shift as fast as the Ferrari transmission. So it makes sense in racing. And it makes sense statistically, I personally, personally enjoy the visceral experience of driving a manual transmission. But the beautiful thing about a dual clutch gearbox is one one gear is revving. It spooling up the next gear to hand it over. So there's we're already good on the power curve and the gear below it for a downshift. Of course, we don't have to talk about the exhaust in a Ferrari. I mean, is there a better soundtrack in the world. Best power to weight ratio in the segment. I got to be honest, I don't know what the other cars in the segment are. But power to weight ratio unbelievable. The room is also using a third generation electronically controlled mechanical diff in the back, which of course offers traction control, but splits the torque between the rear wheels but what's interesting is it impacts the torque between the inside and outside of the wheel. Very, very interesting. So on medium or low grip services really helps in coming out of corners. The rear spoiler that comes up, guarantees almost 200 pounds more rear downforce at nearly 200 miles an hour. I mean, that's important. Let's face it when you're approaching 200 than a Portofino without hurting the efficiency. So remember, we don't want to hurt the efficiency, the fuel economy, and we definitely don't want to hurt the beauty or elegance at lower speed. So in the Roma's cabin, Ferrari's designers came up with the idea to create two separate spaces, they call it cells, one for each driver and passenger. The idea is an evolution of the dual cockpit concept introduced and patented on the GTC for lusso. So the idea is trying to evoke a sense of continuity with the top of the range model in the Ferrari granturismo family, which also has its roots deep in the marks history, thanks to its own strong connection with cars or the likes of the 365 GTC for from the 70s. Let's talk about the infotainment system in the Ferrari Isn't that interesting? I I remember the days when people went for radio delete in Ferrari, because for purity and for let's just listen to the exhaust and let's not get distracted. But now we have infotainment that 30 to 40 buyer has a different demand. Now, when they're pulling up to that nightclub and one of the world's largest Metropolis is enjoying their single lifestyle. They're going to want some infotainment so the technology adopted for the Roma was derived from the SF 90 sturdily, it highlights the future nature of this new granturismo. So this is clear this a GT car when we talk about Gran Turismo, we're talking about something that we can travel distance in style. So the completely digital instrument cluster is integrated with the volumes around and protected by an elegant anti glare binnacle. Just like on a boat which extends out naturally from the dash so it looks organic, it looks proper. And to create a sense of symmetry. The passenger also has an optional they call it in quotes emotional display that allows them to share the driver information very interesting. So let's talk about onboard comfort or interior comfort. There are certain distinctive characteristics that make sure that the room is ideal for everyday driving in long term journeys. Now remember, a lot of Ferrari's are driven 500 or 1000 miles a year they're an occasion car. There are cars and coffee car there attract a car, there a theater car, they're pulling up to a nice party or charity event or that nightclub. We were talking about earlier car, but not so much for daily driving. That just wasn't the idea. Not that you couldn't enjoy that. Now we have a car that had daily driving and grand touring in mind. So they really didn't miss everything. The idea is a Ferrari that thanks to its typical Italian style and driving pleasure, it's a it's like a futuristic take on what finesse life in the 50s 60s Rome. If you think about portrayed by Fellini in La dolcevita that's the idea. That's a movie that inspired other great directors at the time, who also helped make the phrase dolcevita synonymous with life of enjoy luxury without concerns. Not just Italy, of course, but across the world. So if you can imagine being an actor with the girl with the hair scarf and big sunglasses and scarf going out the window or with the top down. But of course this is a coupe. So the Ferrari Roma is lanova dolcevita. So here's the cars. In the Roma competitive class, this is what Ferrari thinks they're up against. And then they want to compare against Porsche 911 turbo, Aston Martin DB 11 v eight coupe, Mercedes Benz AMG GT C, and a Bentley, Continental GT v eight. These would be the other cars on the shopping list. If you're looking at a Roma, I have to admit that's an attractive shopping list. And I don't want to say Rome is at the top of my list. But like very often in my life. The last one I saw the last one I sat in is the one that I want most when people say, Jeff, what's your favorite I say the one I just drove. So I'll say for now since the Rome was the last one that I spent some time with that that would be my favorite. I hope you enjoy taking a look at this car as much as I did. Thank you very, very much to Ferrari Tampa Bay for giving me a chance to make this piece on the car and to show off their car and they were very hospitable. A great crew up there.
