I'm thrilled to welcome Dr Adya Misra to The Joy of SUP Podcast. I discovered Adya on Twitter and love her passion for coaching other women in SUP + kayaking as well as her commitment to the environment. I also admire how she made a decision to change her research career so that she could incorporate SUP + coaching into her life. There are so many valuable lessons within Adya's story I am honoured to share it.Adya discovered the joy of being out on the water when she moved to Stockholm, Sweden and discovered kayaking in 2014. Being inside a research lab 24x7 left little free time to enjoy her new hobby, so a few years later she decided to change careers and get her weekends back. After kayaking for several years, and craving a challenge while living in a new city, Adya tried paddleboarding in 2019  in Ireland and a few months later bought her own board. She is a flat water kayak coach and loves leading small groups of paddlers at her local canoe club near Liverpool. In the soundbite clip she also shares her joy of paddling in the Liverpool Albert Docks.  Adya also blogs about her adventures at Gone Paddling, hoping to inspire other women with full time jobs to try paddlesports while incorporating safety advice for everyone. She is also a British Canoeing #shepaddles Club Champion hoping to improve representation of women at her local canoe club not just as members but in more leadership roles. We cover some really interesting topics around women in paddlesports from both a coaching and participation perspective. I found this really fascinating, in particular around technique and using our bodies in a more effective way. With her paddling, blogging and #shepaddles work, Adya hopes to improve gender, ethnic and neuro-diversity in the paddlesports community.Right at the end of the podcast, Adya also shares her brilliant news with us having recently become a On Planet Patrol Community Guardian. You can follow Adya on Twitter @DrAdyaMisra   You can follow her on Instagram @queenadya Read her fabulous blog Gone Paddling.Links here to find out more about British Canoeing and the #ShePaddles campaign and #ShePaddles Club Champions.Read more about On Planet Patrol.Adya talks about paddleboarding in the Albert Docks in Liverpool. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did recording it. Megan Zeman grew up in Denver, attended Mullen High School, and started playing lacrosse in 7th grade because her best friend was playing. After serious consideration of other top lacrosse programs like Ohio State, Maryland and Syracuse, Megan chose to stay in Denver and play lacrosse for the Pioneers. Her most memorable experience while playing at DU was the championship loss to Stanford. Both winning and losing provide opportunities for growth, reflection and progress. Coach Zeman talks about why confidence is so important both on and off the field. Players need to know that in order to get better taking risks and not allowing a mistake to deplete your confidence is super important. Push yourself to be a student is the game. Remember why you play the game. There’s not one single way to get to the next level. Academics must be a priority. Be careful and cognizant is your social profile. Great advice coach Z!!

Tim Kontos, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association, is in his 20th year as the Director of Sports Performance for VCU Athletics. In 2015, Kontos was named as a Master Strength and Conditioning Coach by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association, the highest honor given in the profession. His honors were further elevated by VCU after being named Associate AD for Sports Performance in July 2016, then to Associate Athletics Director for Sports Performance and Student-Athlete Wellness in September of 2018 where he oversees the sports medicine, sports psychology and sports nutrition departments in addition to the sports performance department. Kontos designs, implements and supervises all strength, speed and agility programs for The Rams’ Baseball and Volleyball teams. In addition to his direct sport oversight, Kontos oversees 16 of VCU’s 17 sports. Kontos has worked to develop a holistic approach to Sports Performance since his arrival at VCU in 1998. Kontos has built a program that believes in educating athletes beyond the “what” and puts emphasis on the “why” behind their program. Although each program is built around the needs of the sport, principles of nutrition, psychology, and recovery are common themes in addition to strength and conditioning. A firm believer in leading by example, Kontos is a competitive powerlifter and most recently squatted 600lbs in December of 2015 placing him seventh on the all time highest squat for his age and weight class. A 1997 graduate of Radford University, Kontos spent two years as strength and conditioning coach for the ice hockey team at his alma mater, where he supervised off-ice workouts for speed and strength training. He holds a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education from Radford. Kontos is a Level-1 Club Coach through the United States Weightlifting Association, a Level-1 Coach through the United States Track & Field Association, and a Functional Movement Screen Practitioner. In This Episode We Discuss: What experience in his journey impacted him the most, and Why. Biggest mistake he has made and how he learned from it. Secret to staying in one place for 20 years.  His role as an Associate AD and how he works with all other departments.  Advice to the next generation of Strength and Conditioning Coaches.   Best piece of coaching advice he has ever received. His favorite quote, Book/App/Website recommendation.
