The book is about teenage girls involved in activist work and, as the book description reads, is “the untold story of the people who have helped spark America's most transformative social movements throughout history: teenage girls.” Mattie is a Harvard graduate and, in addition to all of the publications she writes for and her book, she also has a Substack called “Things I Ask My Mother.” Mattie Kahn is very deservedly one of my Women in Power.   By Mattie Kahn: Young and Restless: The Girls Who Sparked America's Revolutions “Sharon Stone Has Found Her Limit” for InStyle “Things I Ask My Mother” Substack   + another day of extra picks by female authors! He was most talented, perhaps, at working with the genius of others.• After he was elected president, Lincoln surprised everyone by appointing his “team of rivals” consisting of the men he had beaten in the election, and who often disagreed with him. But with this team, he was able to achieve the enormous accomplishments he is still known for today.• Like Darwin, Lincoln understood that success and learning come from challenge and the courage to consider alternate and conflicting viewpoints. Lincoln's cabinet also allowed him to make use of people's diverse talents.• Lincoln was also, unlike many in this book, a master at soft skills such as empathy, communication, and the ability to tap into a strong moral code of ethics to power his goals. • The five genius traits already covered are enhanced and transmitted more effectively when combined with these soft skills, as Lincoln demonstrates. Under his leadership, the Civil War ended with emancipation and the end of slavery, as well as a new and unified national spirit that defined the democratic principles of the country going forward. • To be like Lincoln, we need to know how to ask for help, to work with others, to engage our critics and competition strategically, and to take even our enemies as our best teachers. • Lincoln also teaches us the power of connecting not only with our own moral compass, but with other people via their values and principles, to become better communicators and more effective leaders.#AbrahamLincoln #AdamSmith #AmericanCivilWar #Confederacy #Darwin #Declaration #Descartes #DorisKearnsGoodwin #Edison #Einstein #Genius #Gettysburg #GettysburgAddress #IsaacNewton #Kentucky #Lincoln #Nonconventionality #PoliticalGenius #Socrates #SoldiersNationalCemetery #Tesla #RussellNewton #NewtonMG #PeterHollins #TheScienceofSelf #ThinkLikeaGenius

The Friday Newsletter |  Daily Gardener Community   Historical Events 1801 William Henry Seward "Sue-erd", an American politician who served as United States Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869, is born. He was also featured in the book by Doris Kearns Goodwin called Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, in which she wrote about William as a naturalist. He loved his garden. This little passage offers so many insights into William as a nature lover. As a gardener and just to set this up, this is taking place during the civil war when there's a little break in the action for Seward, and he accompanies his wife Frances and their daughter, back to Auburn, New York, where they were planning to spend the summer.  Seward accompanied Frances and Fanny back to Auburn, where they planned to spend the summer. For a few precious days, he entertained old friends, caught up on his reading, and tended his garden. The sole trying event was the decision to fell a favorite old poplar tree that had grown unsound. Frances could not bear to be present as it was cut, certain that she "should feel every stroke of the axe." Once it was over, however, she could relax in the beautiful garden she had sorely missed during her prolonged stay in Washington. Nearly sixty years old, with the vitality and appearance of a man half his age, Seward typically rose at 6 a.m. when first light slanted into the bedroom window of his twenty-room country home. Rising early allowed him time to complete his morning constitutional through his beloved garden before the breakfast bell was rung. Situated on better than five acres of land, the Seward mansion was surrounded by manicured lawns, elaborate gardens, and walking paths that wound beneath elms, mountain ash, evergreens, and fruit trees.  Decades earlier, Seward had supervised the planting of every one of these trees, which now numbered in the hundreds. He had spent thousands of hours fertilizing and cultivating his flowering shrubs. With what he called 'a lover's interest," he inspected them daily.    Then I love what Doris writes next because she's contrasting Seward with Abraham Lincoln in terms of their love of working outside. [Seward's] horticultural passion was in sharp contrast to Lincoln's lack of interest in planting trees or growing flowers at his Springfield home. Having spent his childhood laboring long hours on his father's struggling farm, Lincoln found little that was romantic or recreational about tilling the soil. When Seward "came into the table," his son Frederick recalled, "he would announce that the hyacinths were in bloom, or that the bluebirds had come, or whatever other change the morning had brought."   1809 Martha Ballard recorded her work as an herbalist and midwife. For 27 years, Martha kept a journal of her work as the town healer and midwife for Hallowell, Maine. Today Martha's marvelous journal gives us a glimpse into the plants that she regularly used and how she applied them medicinally. And as for how Martha sourced her plants, she raised them in her garden or foraged for them in the wild. As the village apothecary, Martha found her own ingredients and personally made all of her herbal remedies. Here's what the writer, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich, Wrote about Martha's work back in May of 1809.  Martha's far more expansive record focused on the mundane work of gardening, the daily, incremental tasks that each season exacted.  In May of 1809, she "sowed," "sett," "planted,' and "transplanted" in at least half dozen places, digging ground "west of the hous" on May 15 and starting squash, cucumbers, muskmelons and watermelons on "East side house" the same day.  She planted "by the hogg pen" on May 16 and 18 on May 23 sowed string peas "in the end of my gardin," and on May 26, planted "south of the hous." The plots she defined by the three points of the compass were no doubt raised beds, rich with manure, used for starting seeds in cool weather. The garden proper had a fence, which Ephraim mended on May 12. Whether it included the plot near the "hogg pen," we do not know.  All of these spots, managed by Martha, were distinct from the "field." which Jonathan plowed on May 15, and DeLafayette and Mr. Smith on May 27 and May 31.  Martha's was an ordinary garden, a factory for food and medicine that incidentally provided nourishment to the soul. "I have workt in my gardin, she wrote on May 17, the possessive pronoun the only hint of the sense of ownership she felt in her work.  The garden was hers, though her husband or son or the Hallowell and Augusta Bank owned the land.  "I have squash & Cucumbers come up in the bed East side the house," she wrote on May 22.  The garden was hers because she turned the soil, dropped the seeds, and each year recorded in her diary, as though it had never happened before, the recurring miracle of spring.     1899 Luigi Fenaroli, the great Italian agronomist and botanist, is born. Luigi wrote a flora of the Alps, and he was an expert in forestry, but today we remember him for his work with chestnuts. Luigi wrote two books on chestnuts, and he was passionate about chestnuts as a good source of nutrition - especially for people who've lived in the mountains. Although today, of course, chestnuts are beloved in Italy, as well as other parts of the world. Chestnuts are unique in that they contain very little fat and protein compared to other types of nuts, but they are an excellent source of both carbohydrates and water. There is about a 50-50 ratio there. And so it's not surprising to learn that Roman soldiers were given porridge made of chestnuts before they went into battle. It gave them sustenance, that simple Chestnut porridge. Today chestnuts are known as a superfood. They are healthy and irresistibly tasty. And so they rank near the top of the list for most nutritious snacks.   1905 Herbert Ernest Bates (pen name H. E. Bates), English author, is born. He is remembered for his books Love for Lydia (1952), The Darling Buds of May (1958), and My Uncle Silas (1939). In his book, A Love of Flowers (1971), Herbert wrote, It is wonderful to think that one of the few unbroken links between the civilization of ancient Egypt and the civilization of today is the garden.   Herbert also wrote,  I shut my eyes it returns: the evocation of a whole wood, a whole world of darkness and flowers and birds and late summer silence... more than the mere memory of a wood, the first and the best wood.   Herbert wrote about gardeners. He said, The true gardener, like an artist, is never satisfied.   And he also once wrote this about gardens. Gardens... should be like lovely, well-shaped girls: all curves, secret corners, unexpected deviations, seductive surprises, and then still more curves.   1926 On this day, the state of Kentucky selected the Goldenrod for its Floral Emblem. Prior to 1926, Kentucky's floral emblem had been the Bluegrass (which seems more fitting still today), but Kentucky gardening clubs felt Bluegrass wasn't representative of the whole state.   And here's a fun fact: Alabama and Nebraska also picked the native goldenrod to be the State Flower.   Goldenrod has a lot of haters because many people confuse it for ragweed. I hate to even write that - because it makes people think they must look similar. But that's just not true. Once you see Goldenrod and Ragweed individually - you could never confuse them. Ragweed flowers are green and not eye-catching, while goldenrods are golden and very pretty.   I saw an infographic a few years ago that said,   Goldenrod Warning: if I'm here, so is ragweed. Stay indoors! Achoo!   This is clearly maligning Goldenrod. It might as well say the black-eyed Susans are blooming, so is ragweed. Or the Joe Pye Weed is blooming - and so is ragweed - and so, by the way, are all the late summer bloomers - echinacea, helenium, oriental lily, asters, balloon flowers, sedums, tickseed, autumn crocus, Japanese anemones, blue mist shrub, hydrangeas, the list goes on and on. It's just an issue of timing. The genus name Solidago is taken from the Latin "in solidum ago vulnera" and it means "I make wounds whole." And so it's not surprising to learn that Native Americans and herbalists have long recognized the curative power of goldenrod when it comes to wound care.   Now, If you want to plant some Goldenrod, keep in mind that it is an early autumn bloomer. It's also an important food source for honey bees and makes for a fantastic cut flower.   Finally, the botanical painter Anne Ophelia Todd Dowden once painted the goldenrod and observed, Abundant it may be, but repugnant it is not.    Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Of Rhubarb and Roses by Tim Richardson This book came out in 2013, and the subtitle is The Telegraph Book of the Garden. Well, this is such a happy and fun book for gardeners in the summertime. I love the cover, which shows a gentleman sleeping on a garden bench with a little golden Tabby cat beneath him. There's also a lawnmower and a wheelbarrow full of produce. There are beautiful garden beds. There's a beautiful garden arbor. And then, of course, there's a newspaper of the daily Telegraph That's laid out on the wheelbarrow, right by the tomatoes and the carrots and the cabbage and so forth. But this is a book that the Telegraph put together, and it is a compilation book - an anthology of garden essays by garden writers And so in this book, you will find fantastic garden essays from the likes of Stephen Lacey, Mary Keen, Helen Yemm, Bunny Guinness, Monty Don,  Rosemary Verey, and the like. Now here's what Tim wrote in the introduction to this book. I'm not sure quite what I was anticipating, but I know it was not diatribes against melon frappé or the best places to find wild chives on the Lizard peninsula. I'm not sure, either, that I was quite ready for the fact that a garden column appeared in the newspaper every single day from the late 1950s on. The result was bulging file after file brought up from the Telegraph's distant archive, each filled to bursting with carefully snipped clippings. Snow, drought, storm, new plants launched, old plants rediscovered, the latest furor at the Chelsea Show - the garden columnist falls upon everything that makes one year different from the last, for with a cyclical subject such as horticulture there is the ever-present danger of repeating oneself. The Telegraph's writers have avoided this for the most part, though I was amused to come across at least four versions of a 'May I introduce you to euphorbias?" piece by the same author. One of the fascinations of gardening is the way the same issues arise year after year while always seeming different, somehow - perhaps because of the vagaries of the seasons.   Thomas walks us through some of the history of garden writing over at the Telegraph. And he concludes with these words. The best writers can achieve this balance between practical advice and lyrical appreciation - in the case of newspapers, all to a strict deadline.  I suppose this theme of writing to order looms large for me today since the deadline for this introduction is suddenly upon me, and I find myself writing during a weekend away. As it happens, the place is Sissinghurst, and the borrowed desk I am sitting at was Vita's, my view through casement windows that of burnished orange echinacea, crimson salvias, clipped yew, and the beatific, wondering smiles of the visitors gliding by. Their expressions make me think,  Does anything in life give as much pleasure as a beautiful garden?' Last night, the white garden at midnight was a revelation. But that is not a subject to be enlarged upon now; I am going to write it up in the next day or two. It will, I hope, become another garden article fit for publication in the pages of the Daily Telegraph. If you like garden writing and you love anthologies, this is the perfect book for you. Personally, I think this is a great summer gift for gardeners because this book has already been out for a decade already -it came out in 2013, and so used copies are readily available on Amazon for a song. But again, this is a beautiful and fun book. One reviewer wrote, [It's] an assorted box of chocolates. I happily skipped between essays by the likes of Vita Sackville-West, Germaine Greer, and Sir Roy Strong, greedily consuming one after the other in quick succession. For those with more restraint, this is a book that promises many hours of savoured delights.   This book is 464 pages of funny and well-informed garden writing dating back to the 1950s. You can get a copy of Of Rhubarb and Roses by Tim Richardson and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $2.   Botanic Spark 1861 Jacob Ritner, a Union captain in the civil war, wrote to his wife Emeline. In fact, there's a great book that features all of the letters that he wrote to his wife Emeline during the Civil War, and it's called  Love and Valor: Intimate Civil War Letters Between Captain Jacob and Emeline Ritner by Charles Larimer.   Anyway, I stumbled on this letter that Jacob wrote on this day during the civil war when I was reading an excerpt from a book by DC Gill called How We Are Changed by War. In this excerpt, Gill reveals how soldiers survived the war, not only physically but also mentally, and quotes Kirby Farrell: "To preserve their sanity," writes Kirby Farrell, "soldiers [often] concentrated on a prosthetic "reality" by which to ground themselves" (Farrell 1998, 179).   We already know that the garden is grounding. DC writes that mental images of happy places, like gardens, can mitigate bad environments, such as a war zone. An artificial image of home can substitute for the deficiencies of a present-day environment in a war zone. It allows soldiers to mentally project themselves into a more comforting geography. Soldiers' letters repeatedly ask for details to furnish these environments of the mind. "Now Emeline dear," writes Union Captain Jacob Ritner on May 16, 1861, "you must write me a great long letter next Sunday.. .. Tell me all the news, how the trees grow, the garden and grass, what everybody says"   The power of the garden to anchor us extends past space and time, and even merely thinking of our gardens can lift our spirits and calm our worries.   Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

When Doris Kearns Goodwin decided to write a book about Abraham Lincoln, the fact that some 14,000 books had already been written about America’s sixteenth president intimidated her. What could be left to say about this beloved leader? Still, Goodwin pressed on, her work resulting in A Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Her fresh insights on Lincoln’s leadership style became a top-rated and top-reviewed book, in spite of the mass of volumes already available on him. The apostle John faced a different challenge as he wrote his account of the ministry and passion of Jesus. The final verse of John’s gospel says, “Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written” (John 21:25). John had more material than he could possibly use! So John’s strategy was to focus on only a few selected miracles (signs) that supported Jesus’ “I Am” claims throughout John’s record. Yet behind this strategy was this eternal purpose: “These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name” (John 20:31). Out of the mountains of evidence, John provided plenty of reasons to believe in Jesus. Who can you tell about Him today?

He held the positions of Director of Sales and Sales Manager at the Richmond CVB.  Battle began his hospitality career in the hotel industry by working for Embassy Suites, Holiday Inn, and Sheraton Hotels. Battle is a native of Denver and a graduate of Metropolitan State University in Denver with a bachelor's degree in Hotel/Restaurant Management. He earned his Master's of Business Administration in 1997 from Averett University in Virginia. He is both a Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) and Certified Association Sales Executive (CASE).  Battle's most recent industry recognition includes Events Industry Council 2020 Social Impact award winner, Business First Louisville's inaugural Power 50 as well as The Courier-Journal's 12 People to Watch in 2021.  Battle currently serves on the Meeting Planners International Board of Directors, Kentucky Derby Museum Board of Directors, Louisville Sports Commission Executive Board, LRAA Board, Kentucky State Fair Board, Louisville Zoo Foundation Board, Funds for the Arts Board, and Board Member for Northeast YMCA of Louisville. He is the Past Chair of Destination & Travel Foundation, Destination International Sales & Services Committee, and the Virginia State University Hospitality Department Advisory Board. Cleo's journey Cleo was a college track and field athlete. In his third year, he tore a leg muscle and since he was still undecided about what he would major in, he spoke to a school counselor who suggested going into the field of hotel restaurant management. He began taking classes and also worked as an intern in a hotel. Eventually, he was hired into the management training program for Promise Hotels. That's when his career took off! How athletics set Cleo up for success Learning how to run hurdles gave Cleo adaptability and flexibility and many other skill sets he needed to grow and become successful in his career. Cleo truly understands the importance of having a strong team and learned that you cannot do everything by yourself in business and that you are only as good as the people around you. His old boss from Richmond, Virginia, taught him the key to any successful endeavor lies in hiring well. He used to tell Cleo to hire well, provide good resources, and then get the hell out of the way!  Trust Trust is an essential ingredient for teamwork. People do much better when they work in a professional space where constructive criticism is valued, they can be honest about their thoughts, and where they know their opinions will be respected, regardless of what the leaders ultimately decide to do. Every seat matters At staff meetings, Cleo always tells the members of his organization that every seat matters. He wants them to understand that regardless of whether they are the director of sales, a marketing manager, or an administrative assistant, their seat in the organization matters! Enabling people Whenever there is a new subject matter, Cleo enables his team by inviting them to share ideas, thoughts and opinions on it. Cleo's current position Even though his current position as President and CEO of Louisville Tourism involves a lot of legislative work and more talk about politics than customers, Cleo maintains the belief it's vital to stay true to the core mission of Louisville Tourism and bring visitors to the community. MPI Since the beginning of January, Cleo became the Chair of MPI and serves on its International Board of Directors. He insists on his team having a growth mindset rather than one of recovery.  The cost of doing business has changed Since the pandemic, the cost of doing business has changed. So a lot of work has to be done on the industry brand to help those outside it see its value, what is being done, why it is important, and how the industry impacts people's lives. Getting more people to join the industry Cleo points out that personnel of hotels, convention centers, museums and attractions, restaurants, and airports cannot work from home. So the industry will need to figure out the right balance between automated and personal services going forward. He believes that the industry must invest in its brand to let more people know why it is such an exciting industry to join. Appreciation and acknowledgment Cleo feels that openly acknowledging his staff members and appreciating what they do are the best ways to encourage them to offer customers the best possible service! Tolstoy presents his view on how academics view history. His point is to say all efforts of historians have limited reliability. Tolstoy embarks on the brave path of grappling with the nature of power. He urges avoiding the trap of thinking Great Men move people. Instead, it is actually people (like you) who combine when they are willing to move. It is You who do all the heavy lifting and rarely get any of the credit.Tolstoy initially describes biographers of famous personages as well as authors of histories related to specific people of a country (say the French or Danish). He sees these authors as attributing power to rulers or heroes in a superficial manner. He sees this as the way Julius Caesar or Napoleon are analyzed - as super humans with incredible logistical knowledge who moved the course of humanity.  He feels such works are limited by subjective views filled with bias.  Some works try to deify so-called Great Men but others are overly critical of them. Tolstoy believes any accuracy is undermined through most authors having an agenda. In present times, let's take someone writing about the United States: Do they present it our history as a land of opportunity, or are they presenting it more in accord with the N.Y Times 1619 project. The question of history, in Tolstoy's view, is too often determined by what lens the author wishes to see it through. For another example, Tolstoy would probably argue that Doris Kearns Goodwin did not set out to undermine Lincoln when she wrote Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. Instead she walked down a path of re-introducing the virtue of Lincoln to an audience quite ready to accept it.Tolstoy then examines “universalist” or generalist historians, who look beyond one person or country. These are non-specialists who look at the multiplicity of forces at work in leading to movements.  Such authors make the effort to see the overall interplay of people and causes. Tolstoy finds it to be a noble attempt to getting at the root cause of event, but still problematic.  These academics would tend to say someone like Napoleon was destined to come along because of the excesses of the French Revolution. In another context, they might argue that a man of prudence and great leadership like George Washington was destined to rise from colonial aristocracy. Tolstoy believes such laudatory analysis involves too much bias and guesswork. He infers that historians usually know exactly where they want to wind up when they start a project. What Tolstoy finds this generalist brand of historian gets right: historical characters are products of their time and age.  What is neglected, however, is the millions of citizens who in Napoleon's day, wished to support him or the various coalitions that united against him. There is a call to war but also an attraction of the people to the movements they lead.   Then Tolstoy takes on historians of arts and culture, meaning those who place significance on men with ideas that are thought to move people – say Martin Luther (posting of his 95 Theses), Thomas Paine (Common Sense), or Marx & Engels (Communist Manifesto). He finds that even Rousseau's Social Contract (1762) was connected to the moralities and whims of the time.   Another contemporary example: what led to violence in the streets in 1789 in France or in 2020 in the United States; the stirring of people up through ideas?, or people just ready to take to the streets for reasons they though justified? There is an atmosphere to an age, a collective experience ready for one message or another -- and the people who act on them are those who move mountains.Tolstoy assigned to this last class of academics the sins of arrogance and pride for believing just a tiny class of persons with ideas they think original have more influence than they actually have.To sum it up; since War & Peace is about the invasion of 1812, Tolstoy advances the notion that the effort was much more than Napoleon thinking the invasion was a good idea.

Download a year’s worth of https://www.leadershipactionlist.com/ (weekly action steps to improve your leadership) for FREE! Warwick Fairfax is the founder of Crucible Leadership, a philosophical and practical breakthrough in turning business and personal failures into the fuel for igniting a life of significance. He was the fifth-generation heir to a media empire bearing his family name and at 26 he led — and lost — a multibillion-dollar public takeover bid. The company founded by his great-great-grandfather slipped from family control after 150 years, leaving him to examine not only his own shortcomings and losses but also his life’s principles and the lessons he learned from those who came before him. Now Fairfax helps others to learn from what he describes as their own “crucible experiences” and emerge to lead a life rooted in who they are and to become the leaders they were born to be. LEADERSHIP INSIGHTS Live and lead in light of your design (e.g. a reflective leader or a take-no-prisoners leader?). Most people will experience crucible moments—moments that changes who you are forever. In these moments, you can either give up or choose to bounce back from it to be even better. There is a difference between rumination and reflection. Rumination is when you relive situations and continue beating yourself up about them. Reflection leads to lessons learned. Be who you are, give yourself a break/forgive yourself, and keep moving into areas where you are more gifted. Do not connect your self-worth to your past decisions. We all make mistakes. Be vulnerable for a purpose. If your story will help someone, share it; if not, it may be over-sharing (or sharing with no purpose). The first step towards living a life of significance is understanding how you are wired. The second step is understanding your values and beliefs. True joy lies in living a life of significance and focusing on others. QUESTIONS TO INSPIRE US TO ACTION What is some lesson, saying, or experience that continues to influence your leadership to this day? Trying to mold self to a type of leader that didn’t fit his personality. Use three descriptors to finish this sentence: “A leader is…” True to who they are, lives a life on purpose, dedicated to serving others. What is a question that leaders should be asking either themselves or others? Am I following a calling that I and those I care about will feel is important? What book would you recommend to leaders? A Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln by Doris Kearns Goodwin If you could get every listener to start doing something THIS week to help them be a better leader, what would it be? To listen to those around you in order to catch others’ wisdom and feedback. As a general life principle, is it better to ask “why?” or “why not?” “Why?” because it is a more open-ended question.   CONNECT WITH WARWICK Website: https://crucibleleadership.com/ (https://crucibleleadership.com/) CONNECT WITH JOSH Instagram: https://instagram.com/joshuafriedeman (@joshuafriedeman) Email: josh@friedemanleadership.com   Want a FREE list of weekly action steps to improve your leadership? Today’s Coaching Through Stories episode features Dr. Dean Taylor, a professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, the Director of the Duke Sports Medicine Fellowship Program, and team physician for Duke University. He is also actively involved in leadership initiatives in the Duke School of Medicine and the chairman of the Feagin Leadership Program. Prior to earning his MD from Duke University, Dr. Taylor received his B.S. degree from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served in the United States Army for 24 years. In today’s podcast, Dr. Taylor points out the role of emotional intelligence in leadership and why it is especially important today while leading through a Pandemic. Dr. Taylor emphasizes how his approach is more than patient-centered and requires teamwork, critical thinking, integrity, and trust within the team he is leading in order to have success. Episode Highlights: Dr. Taylor’s current role and passion Story that started Dr. Taylor on the path he’s currently on How Dr. Taylor got into his profession What pushes Dr. Taylor to pursue a career in orthopedic surgery and leadership development How Dr. Taylor maintains trust in himself while remaining empathetic by asking himself, what does this person need from me right now? Great leaders understand when to shift their focus on each stakeholder dependent on the situation which requires strong self-awareness and presence Lack of commitment to get better and learning from failure impacts our ability to grow Dr. Taylor shares his definition of leadership: it begins with ethically influencing others for the benefits of patients Influence provides a leader with the role to make things better for the population you are working with rather than focusing on authority Executive coaching provides health care professionals with the ability to reflect on their experiences and maximize learning and growth The difference between a great leader and an average leader is time and commitment to growth Dr. Taylor shares an experience where he was accidentally injured in the operating room while observing a resident and how his reaction to this accident impacted the resident’s performance and patient’s experience. Dr. Taylor’s ability to control his emotions and behavior during an event that could have ended his career motivated him to learn more about leadership development. The pandemic has challenged our comfort zone, focusing on what we can do for others and looking outward rather than inward improves our ability to take care of our own well-being Selfless service means to prioritize other’s needs over individual wants and desires while maintaining personal and professional balance. Self care is the foundation of selfless service and it begins with self-awareness. Dr. Taylor defines emotional intelligence within 4 buckets, (1) self, (2) others, (3) awareness, and (4) management. The ability to recognize and understand thinking and emotions effectively in self and in others and to use this awareness to effectively manage your behavior and relationships. Dr. Taylor discusses a time where he lacked emotional intelligence and how that could have impacted patient care should his colleague not provided some important information regarding the patient’s needs in that moment Leaders in healthcare must strike a balance between empathy without setting themselves up for compassion fatigue   Three Key Points: Self-awareness and empathy are critical to performance and leadership Emotional Intelligence is a critical component for interpersonal and professional effectiveness. Commitment to growth and learning sets great leaders apart from average ones.   Resources Mentioned: Patient Stories: Humans of the Hospital Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap . . . In this week’s episode, host Mark Leonard is joined by Catharina Sørensen, deputy director of the Danish “Think Tank Europa”, Caroline de Gruyter, ECFR Council Member and Europe correspondent and columnist for the Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad, Daniel Sachs, ECFR Council member and CEO of the board of Sweden-based Proventus AB, and ECFR policy fellow Pawel Zerka. Does “frugality” actually reflect the public sentiment in those countries? How do the citizens really feel about the recovery fund? And how could the leaders of the frugal states reposition their countries as transformative engines for the EU? Dr. Kim and Colby Leadership Podcast

In this episode, Colby & Dr. Kim talk about and define having a healthy ego versus a “big” ego. They answer the question, is having an ego always a bad thing? They discuss ways to find healthy balance in your life, how to learn from your mistakes, and signs that your ego might be out of control. Quotes: “Sometimes you don't notice how much of your ego is controlling aspects of who you are.” - Colby Taylor “My ego doesn't want me to take responsibility for my actions, it makes me want to feel like I'm better than I am and blame others for my mistakes.” - Colby Taylor “Having an ego becomes dangerous when you are not willing to learn from the mistakes that you make.” - Colby Taylor “If you aren't growing, you are going backwards.” - Dr. Kim Kimberling “When you get older there is a tendency to start thinking that you know more than you do and to stop learning and growing.” - Colby Taylor “I don't usually see the guy with the bad ego in counseling, I see the coworkers of the guy with the bad ego in counseling, who don't know how to work with someone who thinks they are right all the time.” - Dr. Kim Kimberling “Humility is the template you want to lay over your life.” - Dr. Kim Kimberling “You never have to feel bad about your failures or mistakes if you let God use them.” - Dr. Kim Kimberling   Homework Questions: What does ego look like in your life? In what ways is your ego good / bad? Are there any areas where your ego is out of control? How can you better control your ego? Do you see any areas where your ego has negatively affected others? You may be storytelling about your brand, but are you a courageous marketer? Do you have what it takes to cut through the clutter? Courage is something that we need to embrace today, especially if you are a marketer. How do we make a brand stand out? How do we get recognized? CMOs have to have both sides of their brain working. My guest today is Drew Neisser the founder and CEO of Renegade, a marketing company that helps courageous CMOs cut through the clutter. Drew is a strategist and writer who has helped dozens of CMOs unleashed their inner renegade. He has told the stories of over 300 marketers via his AdAge column, his book The CMO’s Periodic Table: A Renegade’s Guide to Marketing, and his podcast called Renegade Thinkers Unite. Show Notes [04:09] Drew's first taste of marketing was when he was in college. He created flyers and passed them out at Duke University when he was running a film event. [04:36] To his surprise, his tactic worked and people came to the theater. [05:39] Working at an agency Drew learned everything you shouldn't do when marketing. [06:19] He worked at different agencies until he finally had the opportunity to get involved with Renegade, which he eventually bought out. [08:04] Calling your agency renegade sets the bar pretty high. They present clients with ideas and programs that they may not necessarily be expecting. [09:59] Drew's books orchestrates and organizes all of the elements that CMO's use. He used his existing interviews and added a few more, and ended up with a book. [11:32] The CMO roll is the most bespoke role. CMO's are in charge of so many different things from marketing to sales to product development. [12:18] A great CMO can pick what they need in the moment and apply that with some general principles in mind. [13:06] A great CMO has the courage to be unique, and the courage to make sure that the brand is unique. [14:35] CATS courage, artful, thoughtful, and scientific. These are the things that make a great CMO. Plus, having the ability demonstrate that they can solve the problem the client didn't even know they had. [14:58] CMO's have to artfully build a team. The great ones are also great storytellers. [15:56] Being thoughtful and thinking about how to be of service to your customers. [16:45] Science is always creating hypothesis and testing. [19:00] Because of all of the technology, CMO's frequently have to go back for more for more continuing education. [24:09] The difference between male CMOs and female CMOs. Sometimes female CMOs are reluctant to put the spotlight on themselves. They talk more about building and nurturing teams and seem to be more self aware. [28:29] Get the operational experience that you need and then when you get on a board, keep in mind that it is an advisory role. [28:56] Leaders who give credit to their teams excel. [29:43] As a CEO, Drew tries to do only the things that only he can do. He also understands how to delegate. He focuses his interviews on people who will be of interest to his clients. [31:47] His episodes are also a springboard for additional content like his AdAge columns. [32:22] Business books are about delivering hope. Books that give a simple path seem to be more successful. [33:50] One of Drew's heroes is Benjamin Franklin. He was America's first chief marketing officer. "Well done is better than well said." This Benjamin Franklin quote has been a mantra for Drew. [35:26] Drew personally loves social media. In 2008, when they pivoted to social media, it saved their company. [39:16] Drew is a marketing omnivore. He just loves learning. He knows that working on one business and just one channel would bore the heck out of him. [40:14] He also needs deadlines and pressure to do his best work. [42:06] To become a better leader Drew recommends reading Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln to learn how to bring out the best in a team.   Links and Resources: Renegade AdAge Renegade Thinkers Unite The CMO’s Periodic Table: A Renegade’s Guide to Marketing Drew Neisser on LinkedIn @RenegadeLLC on Twitter @DrewNeisser on Twitter Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln

Doris Kearns Goodwin is one of the most celebrated chroniclers of the lives of American presidents, the author of multiple bestsellers including The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism and Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, the basis for Stephen Spielberg's Academy Award-winning film Lincoln. Leadership in Turbulent Times is something different, though: an attempt to extract vital lessons from her many hours spent immersed in the lives of four presidents: Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR and Lyndon Johnson, in whose White House she served. In this book, the historian tries to understand how these four men dealt with some of the most overwhelming challenges faced by this country and its government. She joins Bill Tipper in our podcast studio to talk about what she took away from this journey into America's moments of crisis.

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war. That Lincoln succeeded was the result of a character that had been forged by life experiences that raised him above his more privileged and accomplished rivals. He won because hepossessed an extraordinary ability to put himself in the place of other men, to experience what they were feeling, to understand their motives and desires. This capacity enabled President Lincoln to bring his disgruntled opponents together, create the most unusual cabinet in history, and marshal their talents to preserve the Union and win the war.

David Aaker, known as “Father of Modern Branding,” discusses the idea of B2B brand storytelling and being able to convey engaging messages on this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite hosted by Drew Neisser. As the Vice Chairman of marketing consultant giant Prophet and renowned author, David has decades of experience in reinventing the way a company shares its brand message. He explains to Drew the importance of balancing hard facts with emotions as well as emphasizes the importance of becoming a brand other companies want to be associated with. David also shares multiple personal stories that validate the importance of being a stellar brand storyteller. You don’t want to miss his explanation of how both T-Mobile and Barclay turned their companies around through brand storytelling. David’s expertise will revolutionize your company’s way of conveying messages, so be sure to give this episode your full attention. [4:27] Why is a story so important in engaging employees? [8:54] What will it take for B2B firms to recognize that story is a cultural opportunity? [12:32] David’s personal stories behind effective storytelling [16:39] Why does the story go away once a company reaches marketing evaluation stages? Brand storytelling is more than just a hot topic in current B2B marketing environments. It is the key to truly connecting with your employees, partners, and customers. B2B customers feel the need to have a relationship with the business they interact with and employees need to feel that their work is important. Stories garner attention, change perceptions and attitudes, and inspire action - and stories are far more effective than fact-sharing alone. This is why your company and team need to be experts in brand storytelling. To hear the full reasoning behind why this idea is a critical issue for companies across the country, be sure to listen to this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite. The importance of creating a signature story while balancing fact and emotion When trying to convey a message, a CMO has two options: share facts or tell stories. Even though some may argue that "if it's not fact-based how do you convince people's it's actually true?", there is a balance that needs to be reached. The key in the B2B storytelling space is to either magnify the problem, offer a solution or accentuate the outcome. This can artfully be done by combining customer testimony with just enough facts to provide a reliable level of reality. Just listing data and facts is a record-keeping entry - not a compelling marketing campaign. David highlights that a signature story can be 200-300% more effective than data alone. To hear more about why brand storytelling is so impactful give this episode a listen. Actionable items for creating brand storytelling initiatives Take it from the best leader in storytelling. David lays out a plan to create a storytelling focus in your company on this episode of Renegade Thinkers Unite. As a CMO you must first believe and buy into the power of storytelling marketing. Then you have to build a skilled team and develop an environment that allows storytelling opportunities to flourish. Drew also adds that you have to throw your content calendars away because all they do is allow you to get away with regularly producing mediocre content. Hiring a support crew that can take raw stories and turn them into engaging content can also drastically improve your storytelling ability. For more hands-on hints on brand storytelling, don’t let this episode go unlistened.
