I discovered the world of health coaching.  6:07 I've lost a total of over 150 pounds at last count, the healthy way and kept it off. And I did it slowly and gradually. Whereas back in 2000, I did it way too fast, when it was too much of a shock to my system. This time I did it with a healthy mindset.  11:44 If you go out and you have a meal, and you're enjoying time with your daughter, you're enjoying family at Thanksgiving, there are a lot of indulgences that come with that, strike a balance, don't beat yourself up because you enjoyed a piece of chocolate pie, or cornbread dressing that wasn't specially made to be, quote unquote healthy. Balance it out the next day by eating a healthy amount of vegetables and fruits and hydrating.  20:51 Give yourself grace. Don't beat yourself up. Move on. Do better the next day.  26.43 I would have to say almond flour. It's like a miracle ingredient if you're watching carbohydrates, you can make breads and cookies and things. It substitutes for a lot of that good old fashioned southern food using blanched almond flour. And it was a game changer for me.   30:59 My favorite thing that I did, and you haven't asked me this, but was the Keto Shrimp and Grits. I researched the recipe, I took a bunch of different original recipes that were not healthy, and just played with it until I came up with something that my family asked for. Here's a glimpse of our conversation: Stephanie, welcome to the podcast.  4:20  All of these double standards and ways that it's just really kept us as women from being able to feel free to embrace our fullest potential.  4:58  So your Inner Bad Bitch is that part of you that that's your inner truth, it's who you truly are connecting to that part of yourself that is unapologetic, free, excited about life, you know, pursues the relationships that feel good to her, she sets boundaries, which is so important.  7:14 I think that people when they think about personal growth and things, they imagine that it has to be this like giant realization, one after another and huge earth-shattering movements and things but like, really, the magic with growth and with transforming your life happens in the small moments and the baby steps that you take, just how do I move the needle forward? 1% for myself today, and that's how you build that foundation.  8:51 And becoming a curious observer is literally like bird watching your own life; quietly taking a step back. And just witnessing without that judgment and shame and self-pressure, that's all it is.  15:52  And, you know, the sexy side of self-care is those like pampering days, and all of that, but there's a not so sexy side of self-care, which is, you know, doing the dishes, and making sure that you're paying your bills, and all those things that we don't necessarily want to do, but help us live a more on purpose and in the moment life, because when we avoid that, like not so sexy side of things, it actually takes us out of the present. I was better rested. I had a ton more patience; I was enjoying motherhood again. And I saw the biggest change in my son, he was hitting his developmental milestones more quickly, and was just such a happier child, although he was really happy to begin with. So, I decided after that to become certified as a sleep consultant to help other moms in a similar situation.  7:31 We want to have a sleep sanctuary to sleep in and so many people do all those things, but they're still not seeing results. And to me, that's like a check engine light that's on your car. It's telling you that there's something off with your body physically.  9:33 I think there's always a mind-body component to anyone's insomnia. If they're experiencing chronic sleep issues. You know, it's normal to have a sleepless night here and there. If you're under abnormal stress, you know, say you have a tight deadline at work or you're waiting for some test results. Of course, that's going to impact your sleep. Because whenever we're stressed, our bodies produce cortisol, which is the alert hormone. And so the more cortisol you have in your system, the more alert you're going to be. And that's going to impact your sleep. So stress definitely plays a key role and insomnia.  15:33 So the first thing starts with your morning routine, I always recommend that my clients get out of their house and get outside for two to 10 minutes within an hour of waking up. Because what that does is it sends a signal to your brain that it's daytime.  19:13 And then after you take your bath or shower you do your hygiene. Then do something relaxing that you really enjoy. You know, such as reading a book or listening to a podcast or a book on tape, doing maybe some stretching, praying, meditating, and just find some time to like really unwind before you get into bed. And then don't get into bed until you're you feel like sleep is knocking you on the shoulder. Because you should feel like you're ready to fall asleep before you jump in your bed. You know, those low moments in a day (which occur almost everyday in my workday if I am being honest) when you just feel like “it's not working”. Yes, even Jenn has those moments! She talks about a technique she uses, which is simply tapping in & taking a pause. Removing the earbuds, taking some deep breaths, and asking “why isn't this working”. This is something I am going to implement immediately, as I find that I tend to experience moments like this at least a few times per week!Second, I loved her perspective on closing her studio and how she sees it as a completion and not a failure. I think it's so important for all of us to adopt this mindset shift when one chapter of our life closes and another opens. It's not failure, it's not something to regret, it's simply a completion that is preparing you for what's next.Finally, I appreciate how Jenn is transparent about the challenges that come alongside opening a Brick & Mortar studio. She said it was the hardest and most rewarding 5 years of her life, while she owned and operated her fitness studio. When she shared how tough it was in terms of finances, managing her team, dealing with landlords… it reminded me that it's so important to support our brick & mortar shop owners when possible. They make our communities what they are, add vibrancy to our communities, and they deserve to be celebrated.p.s.
