Ads vs. Substance in the Ohio Governor's Race

All Sides with Ann Fisher Podcast

The race for Ohio governor is heating up.Amy Acton and her Republican opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy, have been traveling the state, doing the grassroots work and raising money. Ramaswamy, who has much more money than Acton, has been running ads for months, as has his political action committee. Acton appears to have been saving her money for the stretch run and has just started running ads.The ads are coming fast and furious, setting up a rough-and-tumble final two months before Election Day.The question is, will the positive and negative ads help us understand who these candidates really are?To help dissect the candidates and the race going forward, we welcome Cheri Strachan, director of the Ray C. Bliss Institute of Applied Politics at the University of Akron.Snollygoster of the weekFor those of you outside Central Ohio, you should know we have not had a competitive mayoral race in Columbus since at least the Clinton administration, possibly the first Bush administration. Competitive races for mayor violate the Columbus Way: collaborating, usually behind closed doors, and waiting your turn to run for mayor.Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin is not waiting his turn. He announced last week that he will challenge the three-term incumbent, Ginther. It was a big production. His campaign leaked it to the Dispatch and the local NBC affiliate. They did interviews the day before and held the story for a day. Hardin held a big announcement at his childhood home on the first day of school. It was very well planned. Then Columbus got flash floods. It was a real mess in many parts of the city. The city had to temporarily erect the floodwalls, and major roadways were blocked. What did Mayor Ginther do at the exact time Hardin was kicking off his challenge? The mayor stood in front of a floodwall and explained how the city—ahem, his administration—was going to assist people affected by the flooding. It would have been a pretty good split screen, but the TV stations only focused on the flooding and Ginther. I do not know if it was intentional, but scheduling a weather emergency news conference at the same time as your opponent's campaign announcement is pretty shrewd.

Ohio is expanding its fracking industry despite concerns of its environmental impact

The Sound of Ideas

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 13, 2026 51:52

Ohio is expanding its fracking industry despite concerns of its environmental impact 1.4 billion gallons of fracking wastewater, or toxic brine, is being pumped into injection wells for long term storage in Ohio every year. This salty wastewater byproduct of fracking is full of heavy metals, radioactive materials, cancer-causing benzene and hazardous chemical additives from the fracking process. Just outside of Marietta, the injection wells that are supposed to hold this sludge and keep it away from nearby drink water aquafers are failing. At least one third of the toxic fracking wastewater currently stored underground in Ohio comes from other states. In addition to this already existing containment and importing concerns, Ohio has been increasing its own fracking footprint over the last three years by leasing out its public land to this industry, oftentimes to out-of-state developers. In September, nearly 3,000 acres of Wayne National Forest, Ohio's only national forest, will be auctioned off for these purposes, despite concerns about fracking's environmental impact and effect on nearby populations. Thursday on the "Sound of Ideas" hosted by Stephanie Haney, we'll discuss fracking, its toxic wastewater byproduct and the impact its storage could have in Ohio. The protest period for the September sale of land for fracking in Wayne National Forest is open until Monday, Aug. 17. Protests must be mailed or hand delivered to the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management. Note: We reached out to the Bureau of Land Management and the Ohio Oil and Gas Land Management Commission, both of which are organizations involved in the leasing of development rights for possible fracking. While the Ohio Oil and Gas Commission did not respond to requests for a statement, the Bureau of Land Management provided the following statement to the Sound of Ideas after this episode aired: Oil and gas development on public lands generates substantial revenue that directly benefits the American people, with roughly half of all royalties and fees returning to states like Ohio to support local services and infrastructure. The Bureau of Land Management follows all applicable laws and regulations when evaluating lease parcels, and the Wayne National Forest has confirmed its consent for this lease sale. Hydraulic fracturing is one of the techniques operators may use to produce energy resources, and the BLM requires thorough environmental review before development occurs. Multiple environmental analyses—including the 2016 Environmental Assessment and the 2025 Supplemental Environmental Assessment—found that oil and gas development in the region can provide economic activity, jobs, and revenue while operating under required environmental safeguards designed to protect land, water, wildlife, and surrounding communities. Gary Segars breaks down the 2026 college football win total board with a simple rule: bet the number, not the logo. The episode separates the market into four buckets — overs that may be underpriced, unders that may be inflated, a sleeper with a path to outperform expectations, and public traps involving teams good enough to tempt bettors into a bad number. The discussion runs through Akron, Washington State, Bowling Green, UCF, Syracuse, SMU, Houston, Texas, Arizona, Kennesaw State, Iowa, Ohio, Indiana and Michigan before adding Cincinnati as a bonus under. Each case weighs model projections against schedule strength, returning production, quarterback changes, coaching continuity, transfer portal additions, home-road sequencing and the danger of letting last season's results shape this season's price. The biggest themes include close-game regression, brutal schedules for national brands, continuity versus roster turnover, value hidden in lower-profile programs, and why a team can have an excellent season while still failing to cash an over. The episode closes with the full betting card, a bonus Cincinnati play and a reminder that season-long wagers require patience when September results start creating noise.

Ken and Anthony follow up on the Akron promotion talk before pivoting to the Browns, with Ken conceding he was won over but firmly telling fans he won't chase any more "diamond in the rough" quarterback prospects like Carson Beck, Malik Willis, or Brennan Soresby if the position stays unresolved into next year's draft. He argues this season already counts as a developmental year and next year the team needs to commit fully to a top quarterback prospect rather than gambling on mid-round names again. Ken and Anthony debate a hypothetical where Todd Monken reunites with Beck, his former Georgia and Miami quarterback, while also raising the uncomfortable point that two different Browns coaching staffs, with very different philosophies, still haven't fully bought into Shedeur Sanders

Akron head coach Joe Moorhead joins Ken and Anthony to explain the viral season-ticket promotion letting one lucky fan help script the Zips' opening drive against Robert Morris, admitting he thought it was ridiculous at first before buying in once he saw the potential exposure and revenue for a program with the lowest operating budget in FBS football. Moorhead insists it will be a true collaboration rather than a gimmick, walking through how he builds his actual game plan and stressing he addressed it with players immediately so it wouldn't undercut the team's focus. He also admits he'd feel differently if he weren't the primary play-caller himself, which helps ease some of Ken's skepticism. By the end of the interview, Ken concedes Moorhead fully won him over on a promotion he walked in ready to rip apart.
