Neeraj has also made seed investments in companies including 8fig, Dooly, PayStand, Proton, Reibus International and UserGems since 2020.QUOTESNeeraj on the challenge of timing your investment: "The challenge often is if you invest too early, you've got a good idea but you run out of money before the inflection point happens. And if you invest too late, somebody else captures the market. Having a sense of the timing is really important and like most things in life, luck has a lot to do with it."Neeraj on why both product and sales are crucial for success: "Ultimately, great companies are built on great products and great sales. You can kind of fake it for a while now on the sales side, but the longer you wait to put in the fundamentals, the harder it is to do later." Neeraj on how he chooses the companies that he backs: "Life's too short. If this isn't a person that I want to back from beginning to exit, they don't have the right coachability and skill to read my mind, it's probably time to move on and look at other investments."Check out John McMahon's book here: https://www.amazon.com/Qualified-Sales-Leader-Proven-Lessons/dp/0578895064

M&A is on fire. Which means not just combining companies, but merging cultures. And there's where so many deals fall apart or fail to live up to expectations. (Some research shows that 75% of M&A deals bomb.) And it's often because the team was too busy making sure the technology was compatible or figuring out how to streamline the sales organization or merge brands. Nobody bothered to figure out if the 2 teams were aligned in the first place. Such a shame. So, I found an expert to guide us on doing it properly. Sloan Gaon is CEO of PulsePoint, the leading global authority in programmatic health advertising, recently acquired by WebMD parent company Internet Brands. Prior, he was CEO of DotMenu, acquired by GrubHub. And he led M&A at Miva, acquired by Adknowledge. He's forgotten more about M&A than most will ever know. So, he knows how to assess teams for compatibility. In this 20-minute conversation, he reveals how to do it (and potentially avoid a huge M&A mistake)

Soon after, he joined us here on LawNext in Episode 11 for an insightful conversation about why he started the company, why he sold it, and why he left.  At the recent Clio Cloud Conference in San Diego, LawNext host Bob Ambrogi had the opportunity to sit down again with Britton to record a live special edition of LawNext. For me, the last 18 months following the development of Blockchain and Cryptocurrency has been a little bit of an emotional rollercoaster.  I have gone from.... this changes everything, to just drive the UBER I don't want to buy into your ICO. Today we are hopefully passed peak hype and I am actively involved as an advisor in companies with blockchain at there core.  So I was particularly intrigued when my legal counsel Dan Brush from when I sold my company TVN told me he was now COO and counsel to a crypto wallet and exchange XS2 here in Australia.  His partner CEO and founder Bart Jellema has built and sold several companies including TJoos which was acquired by Internet Brands.  The aims of this conversation were to understand the fundamental principals behind blockchain and cryptocurrency.    It's pretty rare in this space that you get a combination of tech engineer/entrepreneur and legal counsel to explain what is really happening.  I think you will enjoy this show if you - like me are still trying to claw back the underlying value of blockchain and cryptocurrency from the vapour and hype that surrounds the industry.  Bart and Dan are both incredibly smart and the conversation was really enjoyable.

Recently, we discussed the career ceiling in community management. We’re extending that conversation on this episode, talking about the community manager job hunt with an experienced professional looking for work. Trella Rath has spent time at Fandom (formerly Wikia), Wargaming America, Goodby Silverstein & Partners and Mekanism, where she was laid off right before Christmas. Since then, she’s been searching, applying and interviewing for a new job. We discuss the challenges and surprises of looking for a community role in 2017. Including: Why some companies lowball community pros on salary Recommended sources of community management jobs The politics and drama of wiki editing Big Quotes “The best job I’ve ever had was when I was part of an actual community team. We had a VP of community. We had senior community managers. We had entry-level community managers. It was a group of people. After that, I moved over to the community/social hybrid role, and I was all by myself. No one, outside of who I immediately worked with, really knew what I did. They didn’t have a good understanding of what value I brought. Kind of a bummer. I had to do a lot of cheerleading for my own sake. ‘Hey, look, I can do these things!'” -@trellar “[A company I was talking with] didn’t give me an exact [salary] number. But it was probably $40 to $50k [in San Francisco] because that’s what I have been pitched. ‘You’re going to make this lower tier, but we have all these benefits, and we feed you.’ It’s like ‘Okay, no. I want to be able to pay rent. I want to be able to feed my bird.'” -@trellar “The gaming industry, people are so passionate there. I think they’ve almost taken advantage of that, where people just really want to be a part of the gaming scene. ‘Oh, well, you can totally join our company, but we’re not going to pay you market value.'” -@trellar “The nice thing, about wikis and wiki pages, is you read the page as one fell swoop. You don’t see who actually makes the particular edits and contributions, unless you go in to the history and really want to pick it apart. But you’re reading something that’s been put together from the minds and knowledge of all these people who are super passionate about that one subject. It’s cool. If I was handed a piece of paper off the street, ‘Here’s the whole summary of episode six of Glee, written by a 13-year-old,’ I’d be like, ‘Well, this is silly.’ But not having that handle next to it, it’s actually really well-crafted and really well put together.” -@trellar About Trella Rath Trella Rath has been a community manager for 6 years, with a more recent focus on social media. She got her start by managing various communities on the Wikia platform (think Glee Wiki, Lostpedia, WoWWiki). She moved over to the gaming industry for a stint and managed the North American community for World of Tanks, before then moving over to the advertising industry. There she took on the mantle of a well-known snack mascot, where she managed two communities for the agency’s Frito-Lay clients. In her free time, Trella enjoys exploring the Bay Area and attempting to train her pet parrotlet, Mochi. She is currently looking for her next gig!
