Aus China kommt mit der Lisuan Extreme LX7G100 von Lisuan Tech eine neue "Gaming"-Grafikkarte! Bevor aber der Eindruck entsteht, hier könnte es Konkurrenz für Nvidia, AMD oder wenigstens Intel geben: In den Tests von ComputerBase und PCGH schafft es diese GPU gerade einmal an der zehn Jahre alten Nvidia GTX 1060 vorbeizuschleichen. zieht dabei unter Last über 200 Watt und ist verdammt laut. Das macht aber auch gar nichts. Zum einen ist die Grafikkarte nicht im Westen erhältlich, zum anderen geht es hier mehr um die Existenz an sich und welche Fortschritte in China gemacht werden. Vor etwa drei Jahren gab es Tests zur Moore Threads S80, die damals gerade einmal so schnell war wie die iGPU eines Ryzen 7 5700G. Wir sind gespannt, was da noch kommt in den nächsten Jahren. Nach den Chromebooks, die alle gerne vergessen würden, versucht es Google erneut: Googlebooks bringen Android in den Laptop-Markt. Welche Zielgruppe diese Geräte mit Preisen größtenteils deutlich über 1000 Dollar haben sollen, fragen wir uns jedoch. Falls ihr eine Idee habt, sagt es uns :D Microsoft hat es endlich eingesehen und begräbt die Marke "Copilot+". Zur Erinnerung: Damit sollten PCs bzw. vor allem Laptops mit einer NPU von mindestens 40 TOPS KI-Rechenleistung als besonders... Copilot-geeignet klassifiziert werden. "Recall" war ein PR-Disaster und auch sonst weiß niemand, was das bringen sollte. Viel Spaß mit Folge 326! In March 2025, Apple chartered cargo flights to deliver 600 tonnes of iPhones from India to the United States. A year earlier, four in five smartphones that imported to the US came from China. One of the aims of US trade policy has been to decouple the US economy from China. So is the strategy working? Chad Bown (PIIE, CEPR) tells Tim Phillips how he examined the US import data product by product to see how American importers coped with Trump's second trade war. In consumer electronics, many firms quietly built a second supply chain in tariff-exempt countries before 2025, and switched sourcing away from China almost overnight in 2025. But clothing and footwear did not switch, because alternative source countries like Vietnam faced tariffs almost as high. In Trump's first term the US imposed tariffs on imports from China in stages, on product lists set under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974. List 4B, mostly consumer goods such as smartphones, laptops and toys, was delayed "for Christmas season" and never imposed. By the end of the first trade war, roughly two thirds of US imports from China faced new tariffs. Bown's point is that the goods spared in 2018-19 were the ones hit hardest in 2025.The 2025 IEEPA tariffs on China. In February and March 2025, before Liberation Day, the US imposed two rounds of 10% tariffs on all imports from China under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, justified by concerns over fentanyl. For the first time this covered smartphones and other List 4B goods. One of the two was removed in November 2025 after Presidents Trump and Xi met in South Korea.Liberation Day. On 2 April 2025 the US announced tariffs on most of its trading partners, at rates that varied by country. A long list of products, including smartphones, was exempt under Annex II. On 9 April the country rates were paused and a 10% baseline applied while countries negotiated. China's rates escalated after retaliation on both sides; the Liberation Day actions on China alone reached 125% before a truce in Geneva in May. The exemptions matter to the episode. A tariff on China changes sourcing only if the alternatives face a lower one.The August 2025 tariffs on India. The US raised tariffs on India by a further 25 percentage points in August 2025, citing India's purchases of Russian oil. Smartphones were again exempt, so Apple's Indian supply chain stayed tariff free. For some clothing, India ended up facing a larger tariff increase than China.The Supreme Court ruling on IEEPA tariffs. On 20 February 2026 the US Supreme Court ruled that the country-level tariffs imposed under IEEPA were illegal. The Section 232 sectoral tariffs and the Section 301 tariffs on China were not part of the case. The administration removed the IEEPA tariffs and began imposing new ones under other legal authorities, which is why Bown warns that some of the 2025 effects may yet reverse.Apple's alternative supply chain in India. Apple and its contract manufacturers, including Foxconn and Tata Electronics, spent several years building iPhone assembly in India. Patrick McGee tells the story in Apple in China: The Capture of the World's Greatest Company (Simon & Schuster, 2026). Over the last nine months of 2025, 40% of US smartphone imports came from China and 46% from India. Laptops, monitors and video game consoles moved in a similar way, mostly to Vietnam.Inputs for AI. The paper defines AI inputs using the product codes that Nvidia publishes for export control compliance: certain semiconductors, printed circuit boards, servers and other data centre hardware. These made up about 14% of US imports in 2025. They grew by $183 billion that year, more than the $144 billion rise in total US goods imports. A separate classification by Michael Waugh (2026) finds a larger share, at 23%.US tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles. In 2024 the Biden administration raised US tariffs on electric vehicles from China to 100%, using the authority of the 2018 Section 301 action. China exported 40% of the world's electric vehicles in 2024, according to the International Energy Agency, but almost none to the United States.China's export restrictions on rare earths. In April 2025 China restricted exports of rare earths and permanent magnets, of which it produces about 90% of world supply. Bown did not include these products in the paper, but they are the reverse of the decoupling story. They are goods for which the US found no alternative supplier.Tariff pass-through to consumer prices. Bown suggests that firms with an alternative supplier may explain why some prices, such as the iPhone's, did not rise. He points to work by Alberto Cavallo, Paola Llamas and Franco Vazquez (2025), "Tracking the Short-Run Price Impact of U.S. Tariffs," NBER Working Paper 34496, which tracks how the 2025 tariffs reached retail prices.How to Win a Trade War. This Day in Legal History: Sandra Day O'Connor ConfirmedOn September 21, 1981, the United States Senate voted 99 to 0 to confirm Sandra Day O'Connor to the Supreme Court of the United States, making her the first woman ever to sit on the nation's highest court—191 years after the Court was established. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan, who had pledged during his campaign to name a woman to the Court, O'Connor sailed through confirmation with unanimous support, the lone missing vote belonging to a senator away at a conference.O'Connor's path to that seat is a story about the barriers she broke to get there. A graduate near the top of her class at Stanford Law School, she nonetheless found that law firms in the early 1950s would not hire a woman as an attorney—one offered her a job as a legal secretary. She built her career in public service and Arizona state government and judiciary instead, and that pragmatic, real-world background shaped the justice she became: not an ideologue, but a cautious, case-by-case decider who for years held the pivotal swing vote on a closely divided Court, casting the deciding ballot on questions from affirmative action to abortion to the limits of executive power.The significance of September 21, 1981 is both symbolic and substantive. The allegations, filed back in 2022, are stark. The department claims Black workers at Fremont were subjected to pervasive harassment—racial slurs, racist graffiti, including in bathrooms—and that Tesla failed to prevent or stop it. It further alleges the plant was effectively racially segregated, with Black workers funneled into the lowest-paying, least desirable jobs, paid less, and passed over for promotions. Legally, these are claims under California's Fair Employment and Housing Act, the state's robust anti-discrimination statute, and they sound in two theories we should distinguish: hostile-work-environment harassment, where the question is whether the workplace was permeated with discriminatory intimidation severe enough to alter employment conditions, and disparate treatment in pay and promotion. Tesla denies wrongdoing, says it doesn't tolerate discrimination, and says it has fired workers who engaged in misconduct—which previews its likely defense: that any harassment was the work of rogue bad actors the company addressed, not a condition it allowed to fester. Here's what happened: the President announced he was barring the three outlets from the White House because, in his telling, he didn't like their “negative stories,” and over the weekend their reporters—including journalists from each outlet—tried to enter the grounds to cover the news and were turned away by the Secret Service, which deactivated and seized their press passes. The outlets are now in court arguing this is unconstitutional viewpoint discrimination and a violation of press freedom. The legal framework here is well-developed, and it's why the outlets have a strong hand. The controlling precedent traces to a 1977 D.C. Circuit case, Sherrill v. Knight, which held that once the White House opens press access, it can't deny a journalist a hardpass without due process and a compelling reason—the government can't hand out access based on whether it likes the coverage. That principle was reaffirmed in 2018, when a court sided with CNN after the first Trump administration pulled correspondent Jim Acosta's press pass—and, tellingly, CNN has brought back Ted Boutrous, the First Amendment lawyer who won that Acosta case, to lead this one. The core constitutional problem for the administration is that its stated reason—punishing outlets for critical coverage—is close to a textbook definition of unconstitutional viewpoint-based retaliation against the press. Now, the courts have never said White House access is unlimited or that any journalist can demand entry, so there's nuance about what process and standards apply. But retaliating against specific outlets for the content of their reporting sits at the very core of what the First Amendment forbids the government from doing. The significance is that this is a direct test of press freedom against executive power—whether a President can use physical access to the White House as a cudgel to reward friendly coverage and punish critical coverage. The concern is that generative AI, and screens generally, undermine the Socratic method—the centuries-old back-and-forth of cold-calling and live argument that is the signature of legal education. As the chair of Chicago's AI committee put it, the whole point is to do things “the hard way—because that's how you learn.” The worry is that if a first-year law student can have ChatGPT instantly summarize a case, spot the issue, and draft the analysis, they never actually build the mental muscles—the close reading, the legal reasoning, the ability to think on their feet under pressure—that the profession requires. And here's the crucial nuance that makes this more than a simple ban: schools like Chicago aren't rejecting AI for the whole curriculum. The plan is foundational skills first, AI later—teach students to reason without the tool in year one, then teach them to use it ethically and effectively in advanced research, writing, and clinical work down the line. It mirrors a genuine debate splitting legal education, with many schools racing in the opposite direction, expanding AI instruction from day one. As someone who teaches at the intersection of law and technology, I find this the right instinct: you have to understand what the tool is doing before you can responsibly delegate to it, and every disaster we've covered on this show—the hallucinated citations, the sanctioned lawyers, the ChatGPT-fabricated testimony in that New Mexico murder appeal—is ultimately a story about someone who trusted the tool before they'd mastered the underlying judgment. Hey teacher besties, it's just me and Molly this week since Gerry's off doing a show, so consider this a girls' night. I'm coming off a genuinely rough first day back, because my mentor and work bestie of decades has retired, and I had to walk into work knowing she wouldn't be there. I'm now teaching her old class, trying to live up to a legacy I know I can't fully replace. We also do a very necessary lice update (still lice-free, but the vigilance continues), debate the hotel bedbug-checking habits of functioning adults, and Molly gives me a very touching pep talk about becoming the next legend myself. Then Molly tells me about her professional development, including the incredibly humbling moment she got used as a live example of what not to do with your school laptop, twice, since she's somehow gone through three MacBooks in one year. I also share my first day activity recommendations for anyone who needs a low-stakes icebreaker, and then I tell you guys about the best night of my year: going backstage at a Bowling for Soup and Simple Plan concert, meeting one of my favorite comedians, and somehow introducing myself as "professionally a fan" of him. It did not go how I hoped, but it made for a great story, which Molly says is the lore that makes me fun to talk to. Takeaways: I've found that students and colleagues tend to prefer teacher names that are three syllables or fewer, which is part of why I'm comfortable going by "Ms. Forcum" instead of the longer "Dr." or "Mrs." titles. A simple poster board rotation activity, where students respond to prompts as a group in short timed bursts, is a great low-pressure way to build classroom community on the first day. Laptops and liquids do not mix, and putting a laptop in rice does NOT work. Being kind and respectful to your school's IT staff and other support staff will pay off tenfold when something inevitably breaks. Have you driven a car? Taken an airplane? Use email? Congratulations! You use AI! And in order to use AI, you need data centers. Amazing how quickly people fall for lies about data centers. It's the pandemic and fracking all over again. Luddites who don't believe in industrial progress tell people they'll lose their jobs, but data centers will create jobs you've never even heard of. If we want to keep pace with adversaries like China, we'd better ignore the Luddites and pandering politicians and go all in on industrial progress. Meanwhile, a counter-push has started against Luddites who want to prevent industrial and technological progress by banning data centers. Yes there are legitimate concerns and there will be some little inconveniences, but a flat ban would set America back decades while the enemy moves forward. Also, the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 majority, told a lower court to back off trying to stop President Trump's new White House ballroom. The majority said the plaintiff didn't have standing to sue. Chief Justice John Roberts joined the minority - if it were up to him, he would destroy separation of powers. How does it affect Congress' powers if the President raises private funds for the White House? Then, imams of a Shia Muslim mosque in Dearborn, Michigan pledged its allegiance to the Islamic regime in Iran, calling the U.S. a nation of "devil-worshipers." Most of these mosques in Dearborn are raising future Islamic terrorists. The indoctrination of young kids is a poison that spreads into the wider culture. Why do these radical Islamist imams use the language of class warfare and violence? Ali Khamenei, told them to use Marxist language and propaganda in the West. Marxism is attractive to Western liberals. Later, arm the Iranian people, the time is now. The Reagan Doctrine worked. Let us not be risk averse in the middle of a war when we seek victory and thousands of Iranian people have been and are being slaughtered. We can't predict everything in a war; if we are not going to arm the Iranian people, then let's ask the Israelis to do so. They are likely less risk averse, and their Mossad certainly has a good handle on who is who there. The Socialists, Marxists, and Islamists condemn America, its founding, and the Constitution. Any Democrat or DSA candidate who has stated they cannot abide the Constitution or seek to fundamentally alter it without amending it must not be seated in the next Congress, a position which is compelled by the Constitution itself. Article 6, Clause 3 requires senators, representatives, and other officers to be bound by oath or affirmation to support the Constitution; they cannot be seated until they take that oath, which is a requirement of serving rather than a ceremonial act. Ryan Reynolds is an irrelevant actor who called the 1980s a “brutal time,” a “fu*king mess” of sociopolitical tension. The 1980's were a spectacular era of economic growth, restored American superpower status, Reagan's defeat of the Soviet Union and eight years of great Americanism. Hatred of the 1980s is really hatred of Reagan and Republicans; those who reject its economics in favor of 1930s-style big-government programs (New Deal through Biden) or who recast activist government as a new national-conservative idea are recycling old liberal-Republican/RINO thinking. Some say if the GOP loses the midterm elections it will be because of data centers. Wasn't Iran supposed to be the main issue in the midterms? A lot of these Luddites and isolationists are the same. Then, if we hit the brakes hard on AI and data centers, we won't have the most advanced computers, medical care, and other things. Those who oppose data centers haven't lived in a society that put the brakes on the future. They're happy living in the present, but you can't sustain the present without AI. The world won't want our products and services. Or maybe you prefer Cuba with their 1950s Chevys and no medical advances? All great empires of the past, including Britain, are gone. Will America be next? Finally, AI data centers know no economic or social classes. Everyone benefits from them. Yet, the class warfare ideologues want you to believe there are. In East Loudoun County VA, one of the wealthiest and most highly educated populations in the country if not the world, sit the vast majority of our country's data centers -- upwards of 80%. The end-users are of every walk of life. Those who construct the data centers are union, non-union, blue collar, as well as computer geeks and a wide variety of trades and skilled workers. Those who operate them tend to be highly educated in the STEMs. And we cannot imagine how many new technologies, inventions, products, services, cures, enterprises, etc., will grow from this new Industrial Revolution.
