Final results are in and are devastating for US Democrats. Nachdem Liz Truss ihre sehr kurze Regentschaft als Premierministerin beendet hatte war die Zeit für Rishi Sunak gekommen, der allerdings mit wenig Glück und Feingefühl es nicht vermochte, den Tories irgendeinen Auftrieb zu geben. Die jetzt vorzeitig ausgerufenen Neuwahlen werden daher voraussichtlich das Ende der 14-jährigen konservativen Herrschaft bereiten und eine Labour-Regierung unter Keir Starmer an die Macht bringen. Während der Brexit in der Bevölkerung zunehmend negativ betrachtet wird ist die Politik aber immer noch in Schockstarre vor den Hardcore-Befürwortern i der Bevölkerung und behandelt das Thema wie eine heiße Kartoffel. So oder so ist aber das Brexit-Kapitel abgeschlossen und hat am Ende den Tories den totalen Machtverlust beschert. Wohin die Reise für UK jetzt geht bleibt offen.

Es geht Schlag auf Schlag in der Britischen Politik: kaum war Liz Truss als neue Premierministerin vereidigt wird das Land zunächst durch den Tod der Queen in ein zweiwöchiges Trauerkoma versetzt und in den Wochen danach bricht die neue Regierung alle Rekorde, wie schnell man scheitern kann. Wir besprechen was in den letzten drei Monaten passiert ist. Hinweis: wenige Minuten NACH Aufnahme dieser Sendung wurde die Nachricht des Rücktritts von Liz Truss Rücktritt verkündet, über den wir zum Ende der Sendung noch diskutiert und spekuliert haben.

Aktuell ist er schon wieder unterwegs - diesmal nicht mit dem Faltrad, sondern mit einem Alltagsrad. Und der Kategorisierung von elektrifizierter oder Dieselstrecke, Barrierefreiheit, Internet- und Handyempfang. Anfang April diesen Jahres wagte sich Jon mit einer Idee an die Öffentlichkeit, die schon lange in ihm schlummerte: Er bat darum, ihm bei der Finanzierung des #CrossBorderRail-Projekts zu helfen. Innerhalb von vier Tagen war sein Spendenaufruf erfolgreich, die Projektplanung begann. Zusammenstellung der Fahrpläne, Fahrkarten und der Logistik für eine Reise, die insgesamt mehr als 30.000 km, mehr als 180 Züge und 40 Reisetage umfassen sollte. Von Haparanda bis Athen, von Lisboa bis Suwałki, von Valenciennes bis Poprad – keine Grenze, die man mit dem Zug überqueren kann, blieb unerforscht. "Der Bedarf und die Notwendigkeit liegen auf der Hand - wenn wir in Europa unsere Verkehrssysteme dekarbonisieren wollen, müssen wir mehr Menschen von Flugzeugen und Autos auf die Bahn umsteigen lassen. Aber Eisenbahnsysteme innerhalb der einzelnen Länder funktionieren immer besser, als wenn man eine Grenze von einem Land zum anderen überqueren muss. Deshalb ist es wichtig, dieses Projekt zu verbessern." Die Binnengrenzen der EU sind eigentlich abgeschafft, zumindest die meisten. Aber, wer über eine Grenze mit der Bahn fahren will, der bemerkt die Existenz der alten Grenzen oft noch, denn man stößt oft genug auf ein Hindernis. Unser Gast Jon Worth hat alle Binnengrenzen der EU mit der Bahn (oder dem Rad) überquert und herausgefunden: Oft müsste nur wenig gemacht werden, damit sich das Angebot deutlich verbessert. Denn: Wir wollen in Deutschland die Fahrgastzahlen verdoppeln, Züge statt Flieger nehmen. Aber wie ist das Bahnsystem in Europa darauf vorbereitet? Es hat sich schon viel zu lange nur abgezeichnet, doch jetzt ist es passiert: Boris Johnson ist als Chef der Konservativen Partei Großbritanniens zurückgetreten und macht damit auch den Weg frei für eine Neubesetzung des Amtes des Premierministers. Während er die Zeit bis zur finalen Bestimmung seines/r Nachfolgerin/in mit nachgereichten Hochzeitparties verbringt bringen sich die neuen Kandidaten in Stellung. Wir diskutieren die die Auswirkungen der fortwährenden "Partygates", die wirtschaftliche Situation und die Neuwahl der Parteiführung und stellen die wichtigsten Kandidaten im Rennen um den Chefposten vor.

Ein weiteres halbes Jahr ist ins Land gegangen seit unserem letzten Brexit Update und die Gesamtsituation ist nicht besser geworden. Aus den ersten Problemen in der allgemeinen Logistik auf den Straßen ist jetzt eine handfeste Krise geworden. Nachdem europäische Arbeiter das Land zur Pandemie verlassen haben kehren sie jetzt wegen des Brexits nicht mehr zurück. Die dramatisch hohe Zahl von fehlenden LKW-Fahrern setzt dem Land jetzt doppelt und dreifach zu: die Energieversorgung mit Benzin und Diesel kann nur noch teilweise und mit großen Mühen sichergestellt werden und die Lieferketten in der Wirtschaft brechen zusammen. Eine Branche nach der anderen gerät in große Probleme, so dass jetzt sogar die Klärwerke nicht mehr in der Lage sind, ihren Dienst zu verrichten. Die Regierung in London kümmert das alles nicht und sorgt sich nur darum, dass in der Öffenltichkeit genug Streit herrscht, damit für alles die Schuld bei anderen gesucht wird. Und derzeit geht die Strategie immer noch auf, weil das Land es verlernt hat, sich dagegen zu wehren.

Für gut fünf Monaten traten die zwischen dem Vereinigten Könige und der EU ausgehandelten Regelungen rund um den Brexit final in Kraft. Und seitdem ist wenig besser geworden in UK, vom Land in dem Milch und Honig fließt, das die Brexiteers postuliert haben, ist wenig zu sehen. Stattdessen gingen die Exporte in EU gut um ein Drittel zurück und die Einbrüche beim Import werden nur dadurch abgefedert, weil die Grenzkontrollen in dieser Richtung erst im Juli eingerichtet werden müssen. In der Zwischenzeit geht das politische Hickhack weiter und konzentriert sich vor allem auf die schwierige Situation zwischen Großbritannien und Nordirland, in der eine inländische Außengrenze entstanden ist. In Schottland fanden derweil Wahlen statt, bei denen die Scottish National Party wie erwartet gestärkt hervorgegangen ist und die die Umfragen zeigen, dass der Zuspruch zu einer Ablösung von England immer populärer wird. Quo Vadis Britannia?

Jens Spahn, a rising star in Angela Merkel's CDU party, has caused a stir by writing an editorial blasting Germans in Berlin for speaking English with foreigners - and even amongst each other. Calling them "elitist hipsters", he said the use of English across Europe is actually turning into a tool for exclusion, refusing to help foreigners from integrating by helping them to learn the local language. Is he right? Dave Keating and Tyson Barker join special guest Jon Worth, another anglophone expat living in Berlin, to discuss what this is really all about.
