“I think people just kind of were, like, ‘Oh, hi,' you know. They were supportive, they were nice, and, you know, they could tell I was a kid who had no idea what I was doing but was obviously passionate about music. I do remember one guy, though, telling me to make sure I went to college for something other than music and, at the time, I was like, ‘Okay, I'll consider that.' But he was really telling me, like, ‘I don't know if you have what it takes.' But I didn't follow his advice. I ended up going to school for music, which I still am trying to figure out was a good or bad decision.” – Nismah Osman This episode's guest is a songwriter, producer, vocalist, entrepreneur, feminist, and more. She's been writing and producing songs for herself and other artists since 2005. She stumbled into the world of selling her music for film and television in 2011 and has since cracked the code on how to fund your passion for music. Her music has been featured in such series as Love is Blind, Dancing with the Stars, and Temptation Island. Some of her other wins include a degree from Berklee, songwriting and production credits on hundreds of songs, and a chance to learn from songwriting legend Kara DioGuardi, and she runs a vacation rental business on the Jersey shore as a side hustle. Her name is Nismah Osman, and she has a lot to share about how to make a living from making music these days. (0:00:00) - Journey From Songwriting to Music CareerWe start things off with a look back at Nismah's early memories of sound, and how a songwriting convention in her small town led to her very first sync licensing gig. “Obviously I was the youngest person in the room,” she recalls, “and I had no idea what I was doing. But I showed up with my little you know CD, you know, demos that I burned the night before.” She tells us about some of the encouragement, and the warnings, she got from older musicians, and a chance meeting at the next year's convention that, at age thirteen, became her first music deal. “To this day, I get royalty checks for that song,” she says. “So that was like the first taste of like, ‘Okay, I can actually do this.'”(0:12:18) - Navigating Sync Licensing and Musical OpportunitiesNismah explains what sync licensing means, and the opportunities it presents for musicians. “The very short version of it,” she says, “is the music you hear in TV shows, movies, ads, et cetera. And there's obviously a whole semi-complicated process for how you go about getting your music in those opportunities and on those platforms.” She talks more about that process and how a newcomer to sync might get started. “You proactively write music for these opportunities,” she tells us, “based on a set of criteria that generally work, and then you submit that music to, in the industry, they're called music licensing agencies, and then those agencies receive...

Hello everyone, welcome to “Billy's Bubble” here on Drum Channel. Joining Amendola for this week's cover story features one of the most popular hit-making young producers, musicians, and songwriters Pete Nappi. Billy first met Pete in 2016 at an off-tour show in Brooklyn, New York for iHeart radio station Z-100. Nappi was drumming and producing his LA-based trio, Ocean Park Standoff, who had just released their self-titled EP on Hollywood Records. The band was riding the success of their hit single “Good News,” which became one of the most requested songs on the station's playlist. Fast forward four years later, and Nappi is on his way to becoming a hit-making machine, producing the international #1 hit “abcdefu” by Atlantic Records' newly signed teen, Gayle. From there, Pete proceeded to work with Jared Leto (30 Seconds To Mars), Mike Shinoda (Linkin Park), Kesha, Shinedown, Meghan Trainor, and Chainsmokers, to name a few. The Berklee College of Music student who studied film scoring and classical percussion with a minor in conducting, as well as honing his production skills, scored a publishing deal with Universal Music Group under the guidance of Arthouse publisher, singer-songwriter Kara DioGuardi. Nappi recently wrote, played, and produced the Jonas Brothers sixth studio record, The Album, containing the first two hit singles, “Waffle House” and "Wings, as well as producing and co-writing the latest Maroon Five album. Let's listen in as Pete tells Drum Channel his journey from touring drummer to producer/songwriter and more. Enjoy!

We had the pleasure of interviewing Jennifer Decilveo over Zoom video!Since breaking through with Andra Day's 2015 hit “Rise Up,” Decilveo has carved out a place as one of music's most exciting and experimental new writer-producers, crafting critically-acclaimed tracks with Beth Ditto, Hinds, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and more. Decilveo never planned on a career in music. She grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Pennsylvania's Lehigh University with a degree in finance. She scored a job at Deloitte, where she spent most of her days looking at Excel spreadsheets.Decilveo had recently seen a clip of hitmaker Kara DioGuardi on YouTube, singing a hit she'd written for Kelly Clarkson. “Oh, so this is a job, huh?” she remembers thinking. Decilveo quit her finance job to intern at a Manhattan studio. She spent a summer writing songs and teaching herself Logic. She moved to L.A., where her BMG publisher introduced her to Andra Day, a jazz-schooled powerhouse who was working on her first album. They wrote “Rise Up,” a four-chord gospel anthem about getting through dark times. The song was nominated for two Grammys and remains a modern standard: Per President Obama's request, she sang it at the Obama Foundation Summit concert in Chicago, and again on the steps of Washington D.C.'s Roosevelt Hotel during President Biden's inaugural parade.Decilveo has been gaining momentum ever since. She co-produced and co-wrote Melanie Martinez' "Play Date,” which became a sleeper hit in 2020, going platinum and scoring over 500 million streams. She produced and co-wrote Madrid indie band Hinds' third studio album The Prettiest Curse, and seven tracks on Ben Platt's acclaimed debut Sing to Me Instead (which she also executive produced). She recently co-wrote two deeply confessional hits; Demi Lovato's “I Love Me,” and Miley Cyrus' “High” off 2021's Plastic Hearts. In the process, Decilveo has created a lane for sonically wild and deeply personal stories on the radio.Decilveo has a huge 2021 lined up. She produced three singles on Marina Diamandis' new LP Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land, and executive produced and co-wrote Christina Perri's forthcoming studio album, due out in the near future. She is also working with the rising Memphis soul singer Valerie June, and wrote the upcoming lead single by Glassnote artist Taylor Janzen, which will be released ahead of Janzen's anticipated Lollapalooza set.We want to hear from you! Get ready to Turn It Up because the Rumors are true - we are celebrating two pop culture icons of the 2000s: Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan! Join Joel and David for a bubbly, nostalgic dive into the debut album eras of "Paris" and "Speak". As one of the first new mega celebrities of the new century, socialite turned reality TV pioneer, entrepreneur, DJ, actress and popstar; Paris Hilton was inescapable in the 2000s. At the height of her fame, she did what any decent celebrity would do and released a pop album crafted by some of the industry's biggest hitmakers including Scott Storch (Beyoncé, Christina Aguilera) to JR Rotem (Rihanna). The "Paris" album remains a pristine party record, glistening with hip-hop infused club bangers like 'Turn It Up' and the breezy reggae bop 'Stars Are Blind' as well as spiky pop-rock moments like 'Nothing in This World' and 'Screwed' (insert Joel voice: "Justice for Haylie Duff!"). Disney and "Mean Girls" star Lindsay Lohan was always destined to release music alongside her blossoming film career. Her huge mainstream debut album "Speak" arrived in the year she turned 18 after a steady tease of her music through soundtracks for "Freaky Friday", "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" and "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement". Hemmed by Kara Dioguardi (songwriting queen for pop-rock stars of this time) and John Shanks (Ashlee Simpson), this guitar-pop driven coming-of-age album is packed full of emotions. Flip a bird at the paparazzi with 'Rumors', scream at your ex with 'Over', and get what you want with corkers like 'Speak' and 'First'! The group goes a little nutso while discussing Cody's choice for the week, "Paris," the 2006 music album by Paris Hilton. The slightly bonkers episode covers Paris' bipolar energy across 11 tracks, her obsession with death and hell, her famous lasagna, the problematic music video for "Nothing In This World," and the ever elusive Scumfrog. Who is he? Does he exist? Or is everyone just getting high from the fumes of Lillian's nail polish? Listen to find out.Our pain is your pleasure. To kick off the new year, we are featuring an interview with Grammy nominated songwriter, producer, publisher, author and entrepreneur Kara DioGuardi! You know Kara from songs like “Sober” for P!nk, "UnDo It" for Carrie Underwood, "Heartbeat Song" for Kelly Clarkson, "Rich Girl" for Gwen Stefani and more. She was a judge on seasons 8 and 9 of "American Idol" and has mentored artists like Charlie Puth, Jason Derulo and Jon Bellion who is a phenomenal writer at her publishing company Arthouse Entertainment. She is the co-founder of Inspired Nation, a non-profit organization that aims to build a bridge between the talent and dreams of our youth and their hope for a better, more inspired world. And she even co-owns a restaurant in the northeast called, Walkers Maine. What you’ll pick up on quickly in this episode is that Kara loves collaboration, mentoring and giving young talent the resources grow and continue learning. She shares why feedback and advice is meant to create habit in work ethic and why we should always look for other opportunities to become versatile in our craft. Kara and I talk about it all in her new space in the Wedgehood Houston neighborhood in Nashville called Trimble House. NSAI has hosted a few events there and it is stunning – the interior design was all brought to life by Kara herself and it was fun getting the chance to visit her while she was in town. Before we get to our coffee break with Kara, be sure to check out her website karadioguardi.com for information on her discography, Inspired Nation, Arthouse Entertainment, Trimble House and Walkers Maine.
