Tonight's Jazz Feature is a masterful album by one of the most distinctive voices of the alto saxophone John Lenwood McLean, better known as "Jackie". This is a date that he was proud of and rightly so. Mclean is in top form with this hand-picked quartet with pianist/composer Larry Willis on piano, the great Bob Cranshaw on bass and the dynamic Clifford Jarvis from Sun Ra's Archestra on drums. There are only four tunes on this date "Eco" by McLean opens the set with a bang. This is followed by the mournful and sad ode to the late Eric Dolphy by Larry Willis called "Poor Eric" the next is the uplifting and jagged "Christel's Time" by Mr. Willis and finally the exciting title track by trumpeter Charles Tolliver called "Right Now!". This often overlooked gem stands as one of Jackie McLean's finest outings and is over too soon! Check it out!

"We live in a very very weird society here as far as art is concerned. Certainly when it comes to the art form of jazz. When I came to Baltimore with Jackie back in 1965 there was a very vibrant jazz community here. They had the North End Lounge and they had The Left Bank Jazz Society that was committed to carrying on the tradition of the music and have all kinds of musicians come in and play. I played there with Nat Adderley and James Moody and these circumstances are no longer in existence. As I think there is really only one jazz club here in Baltimore that has a consistent policy. Unfortunately it's located in a neighborhood that is very crime and drug ridden. It's just weird, in order to get into this club you have to be buzzed in which sends another kind of message about the safety of that area." When I look at our society, the economic landscape and I relate it to jazz or music in general - our culture. One of the things I have noticed is that our culture is continually being stifled. Culture is the underpinning and backbone of any society. When you see programs which are being pushed forward to nullify education, to take away someone's ability to even eat and clothe and house themselves when there is a push to deny the right to be healthy. This is at the underpinning and I am becoming more and more fearful of the move in that direction. Hopefully I can count on the intelligence and sensitivity of American Society in General. But it's here and were going to have to deal with it. Otherwise we will have to endure negative consequences beyond belief. Culture, Art and Music stimulate the human spirit and the human intellect. If these attitudes are allowed to move forward and exist they are going to deny and destroy that energy that society must have coming from its culture. For example when I came along, if you were important in the Jazz Club you worked there at least 4 weeks period if not longer. It has been relegated to weekends now. The mere fact of having that time space limited to what it has become, in my view denies people access on a daily basis to things that fortify their spiritual life. My big problem with all of this, I am fearful we will become spiritually dead here and when that happens anything can happen. History has shown this happening before with Germany in the 1920s and 1930s and we all know all too well what that produced. We don't need another Holocaust, we don't need another Hitler." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

In today’s episode we’re speaking with drummer and composer Jonathan Barber. We discussed his early musical upbringing, his time at the Jackie McLean Institute, his strategy for joining your dream band, the best mindset for success, working with Pat Metheny, and much more.Support the Podcast: https://berniesbootlegs.com/supportConnect with Jonathan:Website: http://jonathanbarbermusic.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jonathanb_live/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-eE3V1WYdHvc5f2MzU6zmAFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/jonathanbarberartistpage/Connect with Bernie's Bootlegs:Website: http://berniesbootlegs.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/berniesbootlegsFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/berniesbootlegsTwitter: https://twitter.com/berniesbootlegsYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/berniesbootlegs1Email: berniesbootlegs@gmail.comAppended biography, courtesy of jonathanbarbermusic.com:"Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead is an ascendant New York jazz quintet led by Modern Drummer’s “#1 Best Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018,” Jonathan Barber. Only 29 years old, Mr. Barber has already worked with artists such as Pat Metheny, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Kenny Barron, Jeremy Pelt, Jimmy Greene, J.D. Allen, Harold Mabern, Larry Willis, Steve Davis, The Brooklyn Philharmonic, and Erykah Badu. Now, he’s stepping out in full force as a bandleader. DownBeat magazine calls Vision Ahead’s self-titled debut album Barber’s “greatest accomplishment to date,” but make no mistake, this group is more than the Jonathan Barber Quintet; this is unmistakably “Vision Ahead,” a distinctive and close-knit group of musicians who have been working toward this moment for years. Featuring Godwin Louis on saxophone, Andrew Renfroe on guitar, Matt Dwonszyk on bass, and Taber Gable on piano, Vision Ahead offers a fresh blend of classic jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion that’s already attracting listeners across generations. Even when they’re playing hard—and they do reach some thrilling crescendos—this extremely dynamic band always feels impeccably sharp and in control, cool far beyond their years. Barber also shows quite a gift for pacing in his new compositions, with each song boasting a real sense of progression that’s balanced with a proper spotlight on his bandmates’ noteworthy improvisations. Barber is the main composer but each member of the band contributes compositions and arrangements. With strong melodic motifs and almost every extended solo accompanied by new forms or themes, Barber’s music strikes the rare balance of maintaining a clear emotional through-line while still providing each soloist a fresh foundation on which to build. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead has performed at The Jazz Standard, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, Scullers Jazz Club, Smalls Jazz Club, Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola, Rockwood Music Hall, Smoke Jazz Club, The Cell, Minton’s Playhouse, Black Eyed Sally’s, The Side Door and other notable music venues. In August of 2018 this band headlined the Rainy Days Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia. The name “Vision Ahead” holds deep personal significance to Barber..."Support the show (http://berniesbootlegs.com/support)

Jackie McLean's quartet dates are rather rare as he usually recorded with other horns on his own dates. McLean is in fine creative form here on this rare session, done in April of 1966 for Blue Note. It was supposed to be issued and called "High Frequency" but remained in the can until the late 70's when it was issued as a vinyl 'twofer' by Blue Note. It's only other issue was on a box set by Mosaic Records called "The Complete Blue Note Recordings of Jackie McLean 1964-66"...that set is out of print and commands a huge price on eBay.McLean points to the future in his performance here but doesn't let you forget where he came from stylistically as he performs two of his own tunes plus two by pianist Larry Willis and one by bassist Don Moore. The drummer on this date is a McLean discovery who is now one of the greatest drummers in Jazz history, Jack DeJohnette. As Jackie describes his sound...."no artificial sweetener'.... he is in compelling form here delivering his message with grace, swing and authority. McLean passed away on March 31,2006 has music and sound will be missed.
