As I predicted, the ICMA finally capitulated and settled the anti-defamation lawsuit brought forth by Michigan city manager James Freed. As part of the agreement where financial details were not releaed, the ICMA agreed to retract the censure by removing it from their website.  The settlement was announced via a joint statement on ICMA letterhead. However, I have received overwhelmingly negative responses from the city managers in my network regarding the language of that statement.  In this episode, I dissect the statement and compare it to the original press release issued by the ICMA when it announced the public censure of James Freed.  And now that this matter has been resolved to the satisfaction of both parties -- we ponder the logical question that remains:  Now what? Things are heating up in the battle between Port Huron City Manager James Freed and the ICMA over the last two weeks. The two-year saga began in June 2022 when the ICMA publicly censured Freed and stripped him of his credential. Freed countered with a lawsuit alleging the ICMA engaged in a conspiracy to defame him. On September 5, 2024, Freed sent out an email along with a 21-page court filing. See link in the show notes. On Friday the 6th, the ICMA issued its first public statement on the lawsuit mentioning James Freed by name and referencing yours truly indirectly. On Monday the 9th, Freed and the ICMA once again made public statements. Freed addressed his employees at an annual luncheon and spoke about the lawsuit and upcoming trial. His remarks were about 20 minutes long and have been included in this podcast. Additionally, the ICMA's director of advocacy pubished an article on its website. Jason Grant argued that public censures were not punitive and defended the organization. 'Absurd': Backlash after a man is appointed as Scotland's first period dignity officer The appointment of a man as Scotland's first "period dignity officer" has provoked widespread criticism. Critics say the job should have gone to a woman and former tennis star Martina Navratilova has labelled the appointment of Jason Grant "f****** ridiculous". Mr Grant, a former personal trainer, has been given the job of promoting access to free sanitary products in schools and colleges across the Tay region. The role also includes discussing issues around the menopause. His appointment comes as Scotland becomes the first country in the world to introduce a law to widen access, free of charge, to sanitary products. Mr Grant's job title is Period Dignity Regional Lead Officer, the first role of its kind in Scotland. News of his appointment has prompted criticism on social media and elsewhere. Susan Dalgety, a feminist and columnist for The Scotsman newspaper, told Sky News: "I am astonished that a man has been appointed to be lead on "period dignity" in Tayside. It takes mansplaining to a new level. "Jason has said being a man will help him reduce stigma and that it is time to normalise topics like menstruation and menopause. "Periods are normal life for women, we don't need some bloke in a blood red polo-shirt raising our awareness." Jason Grant's PR representatives said he wasn't available for interview. In an earlier statement announcing his two-year appointment, he was quoted as saying: "I think being a man will help me to break down barriers, reduce stigma and encourage more open discussions. "Although affecting women directly, periods are an issue for everyone. "We'll also raise awareness of the menopause which, although a natural process for women, has wider repercussions in the world of work and family. "It's time to normalise these topics and get real around the subject. "I believe I can make progress by proving this isn't just a female topic." This is just my opinion. Some would say this is the podcast that wasn't supposed to happen. After a couple of reschedules and then a couple technical errors during the recording we did finally get it done. Mathew, James and Liam joined me to talk all things United, Chelsea and Liverpool. That was back in 2014…and now almost four years later, I spoke to Jason about the impact that experience had on his life, how it helped shape his post graduation experience and how it still carries with him today.
