This is the part of the podcast where we talk about voting systems, specifically the quadratic voting on the blockchain that Ruth has made into an app that's in use in the Park.  Then we moved into her work with Government ministries and big corporations, bringing the aliveness and liveliness, and special insight of Live Action Role Play into politics and industry to help people see things from a wider context.  This is how we change the world: one new idea at a time...

Ruth Catlow has taken the amazing work she did in lockdown and held live festivals in the park where people get to become one of the seven core species: a dog, a Canada goose (just visiting!) a tree, grass… and, yes, a stag beetle. What they're not being, are people. This Episode will look at Player Agency in LARP. Player Agency is how much control a player has over what their character does, or doesn't do in a LARP. Some LARP give you near total agency over your character, while others are more linear and restrict what a player can do in the opposite direction.

After the tumultuous and ambiguous events at the end of the previous episode, Perry swings over to Mason's place again. This Episode will look at Historical LARP. These are LARP which either have a historical theme or look to recreate a historical event, such as The Field of the Cloth of Gold. For those unfamiliar, the Field of the Cloth of Gold was a meeting between Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France in 1520. It was a meeting where each King tried to show who was the bigger man and the oneupmanship was a constant through the event.This was recreated in a LARP called The Meeting of the Monarchs and we are fortunate to have one of the developers with us on this show

This week's conversation ranges over an astonishingly wide range of topics from ways to facilitate interspecies communication through play and ways to play 3-person pacifist chess (and thereby change the world), to the nature of democracy and how the use of quadratic voting on the blockchain to inspire artistic endeavours in north London might be expanded nationally and internationally on the scale of global governance to shift the cultural dominance away from capital hegemony to a more fluid, genuinely inclusive democracy. All this in conversation with Ruth Catlow.  Ruth is co-founder (with Marc Garrett) and co-director (with Charlotte Frost) of Furtherfield, a project based in Finsbury Park in London which organises for inclusivity and equity in art and technology and advocates for their use in imagining and building real social change and positive environmental impact.Background and Bio: Furtherfield's mission is to open up the tools and debates of the exclusionary realms of art and technology for collective action for collective good. Ruth and her colleagues invest time and energy in decentralised and distributed p2p practices, fostering new creative collaborations between artists and communities, as well as challenging debates about the role of art and technology in society.With this, Ruth's work advances critical discussions of emergent technologies and their implications and she has, for example, led the way in terms of understanding what blockchain technologies mean for the arts and beyond. She directs the Furtherfield decentralised arts lab, DECAL and is also key to the development of live action role play (LARP) games for research, partnering with researchers to craft imagined/futuristic scenarios in which a group of players explore a complex socio-digital issue. Since late 2020, Ruth has been immersed in the massive Interspecies Treaty LARP as  part of her participation in the EU Horizon 2020 funded CreaTures project. Do you know what the Achronym LARP means? It stands for Live Action Role Play[ing]It's fantasy played out in life rather than in the mind's imagination. It is a detachment from reality in order to make the fantasy the main focus, the most important. It's no different than delusion, only it's deliberate, and at the control of the individual's effort to keep themselves within the false reality. Do you see that occurring anywhere other than cosplay (costumed play)? When the pressures of REALITY overwhelm people with Fear and Anxiety, there's a tendency to slip into a fantasy so as to cope with the stress of the real world. They tend to seek out people they perceive to be stronger than them, whom appear to stand for principles they share, and then follow their lead. That's why there's always been social movements during times of turmoil, and why there's always been many outcroppings of opportunstic "leaders" to fill the role of the Tin God deity the people are clamoring for. Someone to do the heavy lifting for them during times of crisis, and they all too willingly give themselves over to these influencers as a way of escaping the sense of personal responsibility they otherwise would have. It's someone else's fault now if things don't turn out well. They can lie to themselves and say they did everything they could, but that the leader betrayed or failed them. Rather than being leaders themselves, in charge of their own lives, now they have a scapegoat. They will praise and defend that leader, that social media personality, that sports star, and live vicariously through them. They will Watch rather than Do, and tell themselves that huddling around another is the same as doing something themselves. Why? Ask yourself why when this arrangement is perfect for someone with ill intent to waste their time, mislead and distract them, and rip them off financially. Why would they blindly trust anyone like this without ever questioning what they're being told?The answer is the Plague of this once brave nation of people. This Episode will look at the Logitudinal or Sequential LARP. Specifically, we will explore both the player experience, and how game designers plan for LARP that run in a Logitudinal or Sequential method. As a warning, this Episode contains explicit language, so if that is not your cup of tea, then perhaps you may wish to skip this Episode. Logitudinal or Sequential LARP are games where each successive game plays on the one before it. This primarily a plot line that goes from one to the next, so that each game pulls from the one before it. You do not always need to play in the previous game to play in the current one, although it usually helps to know what happened, especially if your character was there.

LARP stands for Live Action Role Play. Think of it like Lord of the Rings comes to life, where you get to create your own character and wield foam swords on a mock-battlefield. But for many players, LARP is more than just fun and games - it's a lifeline to belonging. With Good Reason producer, Matt Darroch, has the story. And: Climate change, pollution, and development projects are threatening surf breaks all over the world. H. Gelfand says many surfers have taken up the mantle of environmental activism, becoming outspoken protectors of our oceans. Later in the show: Bird watching isn't a sport in the traditional sense. There aren't any touchdowns or raucous crowds. But birders are no strangers to competition. Matthew Anthony charts the rise of birding as a sport. Plus: Jerry Beasely is a 9th degree blackbelt and member of the Black Belt Magazine Hall of Fame. From the 1970's until 2021, he developed and taught one of the only college-level Asian martial arts programs in the country.
