On Friday afternoon, a massive industrial fire erupted at the East Jordan Plastics Factory in South Haven, Michigan. The blaze started at 3:47 pm and firefighters remained on the scene until the site was finally cleared around 6:00 am Saturday. A giant column of smoke could be seen for more than 40 miles, and at least 16 different fire departments used about 2 million gallons of water to contain the fire.​Founded in 1947, East Jordan Plastics makes sustainable commercial horticultural growing containers widely used by large-scale, controlled-environment cultivation operations, including commercial greenhouses and cannabis cultivation. The business has been in the same family for more than three generations.​In a statement, the company said, "We experienced a substantial fire at our East Jordan Plastics facility in South Haven, Michigan. Our team quickly evacuated the facility, and no injuries have been reported." It is working with local authorities and emergency responders to determine a cause.​The plastics company makes recyclable plant trays, growing pots and plant containers. It also runs a large-scale industrial recycling unit that processes some 20 million pounds of used horticultural plastics annually, including polystyrene, polypropylene and high-density polyethylene.  ​East Jordan Plastics operates recycling facilities at a 150,000-square-foot facility in South Haven as well as a 260,000-square-foot plant in Lyons, Georgia. A West Cork father, Leonard Lyons, is appealing to the Government to speed up his wife's family-reunification visa application, which has been awaiting a decision for 14 months. His wife and their nine-month-old son, who holds an Irish passport, are currently in the Philippines, where volcanic ashfall has raised concerns about the baby's health. The family says they have followed all the required procedures and are simply asking for a decision. The Department of Justice says applications of this type generally have a 12-month target for a first-instance decision, although some cases can take longer.

Amb. Deborah Lyons has stayed out of the public eye for the past year, ever since she abruptly stepped down as Canada's last special envoy on preserving Holocaust remembrance and combatting antisemitism. Lyons resigned three months early from her high-profile role, in July 2025, at the time telling The CJN she felt “despondent and despairing” over how few Canadians stood up against anti-Jewish hatred since Oct. 7, 2023. In February 2026, the federal government scrapped her role, along with her entire office—and did the same with the special representative for Islamophobia. The work, Ottawa announced, was to be folded into a new advisory council reporting to the minister of Canadian identity and culture. In June, Prime Minister Mark Carney promised this council's first job is to tackle antisemitism, even though critics noted the council included appointed members who held publicly anti-Israel positions. But Lyons came out of retirement on Sept. 15 to put the federal government, this new council and Prime Minister Carney on notice. During a talk at a high-profile conference in Toronto on antisemitism and democracy, Lyons revealed she disliked how the council was launched. She says she told the public servant in charge of the council that “they must deliver soon. We cannot get to Hanukkah without some real results and deliverables from the council, in my view, because a lot of work has already been done. We left last episode with the policy response of Venice, Ypres, Rouen and Grenoble to first the 1527-1531 famine and later structural response.  Today, we'll look at Lyons, Valladolid and England.  It's not easy, it never is when demons are involved.          Anyway, we will have looked at France, the low countries, England, Spain and Italy.  One of the points is that Humanist inspired regulation, adopting their core ideology was done by both Catholics and Protestants.  The Catholics suffered more from internal politics, as there was political pushback from the monasteries and other sections of the church when the policy response of the cities was always, eventually always, to secularize the aid to the poor.  Because the secular authorities, by the 16th century, were where all the repressive power was.  And repression of the poor gradually became a key plank in the solution set.  Remember Rouen and the gibbets standing right next to where food was distributed.Lyon has been a favorite of historians studying 16th century poverty. It follows and unusual, but dramatic arc.

Full Text of Readings Monday of the Twenty-third Week in Ordinary Time Lectionary: 437 The Saint of the day is Blessed Frédéric Ozanam Blessed Frédéric Ozanam's Story A man convinced of the inestimable worth of each human being, Frédéric served the poor of Paris well, and drew others into serving the poor of the world. Through the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, which he founded, his work continues to the present day. Frédéric Ozanam was the fifth of Jean and Marie Ozanam's 14 children, one of only three to reach adulthood. As a teenager he began having doubts about his religion. Reading and prayer did not seem to help, but long walking discussions with Father Noirot of the Lyons College clarified matters a great deal. Frédéric wanted to study literature, although his father, a doctor, wanted him to become a lawyer. Frédéric yielded to his father's wishes and in 1831, arrived in Paris to study law at the University of the Sorbonne. When certain professors there mocked Catholic teachings in their lectures, Frédéric defended the Church. A discussion club which Frédéric organized sparked the turning point in his life. In this club, Catholics, atheists, and agnostics debated the issues of the day. Once, after Frédéric spoke about Christianity's role in civilization, a club member said: “Let us be frank, Mr. Ozanam; let us also be very particular. What do you do besides talk to prove the faith you claim is in you?” Frédéric Ozanam was stung by the question. He soon decided that his words needed a grounding in action. He and a friend began visiting Paris tenements and offering assistance as best they could. Soon a group dedicated to helping individuals in need under the patronage of Saint Vincent de Paul formed around Frédéric. Feeling that the Catholic faith needed an excellent speaker to explain its teachings, Frédéric convinced the Archbishop of Paris to appoint Dominican Father Jean-Baptiste Lacordaire, the greatest preacher then in France, to preach a Lenten series in Notre Dame Cathedral. It was well-attended and became an annual tradition in Paris. After Frédéric Ozanam earned his law degree at the Sorbonne, he taught law at the University of Lyons. He also earned a doctorate in literature. Soon after marrying Amelie Soulacroix on June 23, 1841, he returned to the Sorbonne to teach literature. A well-respected lecturer, Frédéric worked to bring out the best in each student. Meanwhile, the Saint Vincent de Paul Society was growing throughout Europe. Paris alone counted 25 conferences. In 1846, Frédéric, Amelie, and their daughter Marie went to Italy; there he hoped to restore his poor health. They returned the next year. The revolution of 1848 left many Parisians in need of the services of the Saint Vincent de Paul conferences. The unemployed numbered 275,000. The government asked Frédéric and his coworkers to supervise the government aid to the poor. Vincentians throughout Europe came to the aid of Paris. Frédéric then started a newspaper, The New Era, dedicated to securing justice for the poor and the working classes. Fellow Catholics were often unhappy with what Frédéric wrote. Referring to the poor man as “the nation's priest,” Frédéric said that the hunger and sweat of the poor formed a sacrifice that could redeem the people's humanity. In 1852, poor health again forced Frédéric to return to Italy with his wife and daughter. He died on September 8, 1853. In his sermon at Frédéric's funeral, Fr. Lacordaire described his friend as “one of those privileged creatures who came direct from the hand of God in whom God joins tenderness to genius in order to enkindle the world.” Frédéric was beatified in 1997. Since Frédéric wrote an excellent book entitled Franciscan Poets of the Thirteenth Century, and since his sense of the dignity of each poor person was so close to the thinking of Saint Francis, it seemed appropriate to include him among Franciscan “greats.” His liturgical feast is celebrated on September 9. Reflection Frédéric Ozanam always respected the poor while offering whatever service he could. Each man, woman, and child was too precious to live in poverty. He was born in Asia Minor around the year 120, and was a disciple of Saint Polycarp, who was in turn a disciple of St John the Evangelist. He succeeded the martyred St Pothinus as Bishop of Lyons in Gaul (now France). He produced many writings contesting not only against paganism but against Gnostic heresies that were then troubling the Church. When Victor, Bishop of Rome, planned to excommunicate the Christians of Asia Minor for celebrating Pascha on a different date than the Church of Rome, Irenaeus persuaded him to stay his hand and maintain unity and peace in the Church. (This was before the date of Pascha had been set by the Ecumenical Councils). By his efforts Lyons became for centuries a center and bastion of Orthodoxy in the West.
