On this episode of Daily Detroit, host Jer Staes is joined by barchaeologist and writer Mickey Lyons to explore the newest and best places to grab a drink around the city. They dig into Mickey's latest guide for Eater Detroit, "The Best New Bars in Detroit Right Now," which highlights standout spots for cocktails, beer, and wine across the region. From intimate neighborhood joints to polished hotel bars and creative cocktail dens, the conversation covers what makes each place worth a visit, how they fit into Detroit's evolving bar scene, and why thoughtful hospitality still matters as much as a good drink. Jer and Mickey talk about how Detroit's bar culture has matured over the past decade, what trends are emerging behind the stick, and how new openings are spreading beyond the traditional downtown and Midtown cores. They also share practical tips on what to order, when to go, and how to pick the right spot for your next night out, date, or low‑key hang with friends. If you're plotting your next bar crawl or just want a fresh place to become a regular, this episode is a handy starting point. Ennis business owners are divided on whether the town's main street should remain pedestrianised into the future. From today, all routes in the town centre are open to traffic with the exception of O'Connell which is to remain pedestrian-only until February 16th. Clare County Council is seeking views from the public on future access, traffic flow, and possible pedestrianisation options for the street, with an online survey to go live on the Clare County Council website from December 8th. A new survey conducted by Retailers of Ennis meanwhile has found that 55% of local businesses are in favour of blending pedestrianisation and traffic flow on O'Connell Street, while the majority of respondents are calling for an increased Garda presence on the thoroughfare. Recently, Rob dedicated a fall weekend to traveling to the Catskills to fish and conduct an in-person interview with Nick Lyons. Nick's works in writing and publishing have played a crucial role in shaping Rob's lifelong passion for fishing. When Rob launched this podcast in 2010, he was significantly inspired by the writings of both Nick Lyons and John Geirach. Rob has emulated Lyons' authenticity alongside Geirach's "trout bum" way of life as he seeks to educate others about fly fishing and share captivating tales. This moment provides Rob with the opportunity to connect with Nick in his sunroom in Woodstock, NY, exchanging stories about his fishing experiences, from his very first catch to his last catch and those he shared the water with along the way. Nick recants tales involving notable figures like Ed Van Put, Lefty Kreh, Mark Sosin, Tom Rosenbauer, Sparse Grey Hackle, Charles Ritz, Lee Wulff, Art Flick, Vince Marinaro, William Humphrey, Craig Matthews, Yvon Chouinard, Tom McGuane, and Al Troth. Some of these anecdotes have yet to be shared publicly. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Lyons to discuss her beautiful and thought-provoking book, Entwined: Dispatches from the Intersection of Species. From fieldwork encounters to reflections on climate grief and moral imagination, this conversation reveals why understanding our entanglement with other species might be one of the most urgent challenges of our time.
On this week's episode of ReBloom, we welcomed yoga and meditation guide Matthew D. Lyons, whose path reminds us tha t purpose rarely arrives all at once. More often, it appears in quiet signals that we only understand in hindsight. After nearly twenty-six years in politics and government relations, Matthew realized that the career he had built no longer aligned with what brought him joy. Looking back, he reflects, “I see that I was laying breadcrumbs for my heart a long time ago.”Those breadcrumbs eventually led him to leave his former profession and begin teaching yoga in Washington, D.C. What started with a single Bikram class opened the door to yin and restorative yoga, Yoga Nidrā, meditation, and sound healing — practices that helped him reconnect with what felt meaningful rather than merely impressive. Today, Matthew guides students toward presence, steadiness, and inner clarity. Through stillness-based practices, he invites others to pause, reassess, and follow what feels true. As he shared, “If it's truly your calling, it will keep calling you.”Matthew's story is not just about changing careers. It is about listening deeply, honoring what is real, and allowing life to unfold at a pace that feels human. Growth does not require perfection, only a willingness to begin.https://www.matthewdlyons.com/aboutBig thank you to our sponsor: Jet Creative: A women-owned marketing firm committed to community and empowerment.
