Alongside all the serious sports chatter, Jim and I trade jibes about a certain die-hard Duke fan and might even let you in on how to sneak past those pesky paywalls. Wake Forest hasn't been 2-0 in the ACC since the 2008-09 season. Miami will put that undefeated conference record to the test, matching the Deacs' high-octane offense with one of its own. Between Nijel Pack, Wooga Poplar, Matthew Cleveland and Norchad Omier, the Hurricanes will be hard to stop. But it's possible. Wake Forest's defense is much improved. Miami's is porous. With the right combination of offensive success, gritty defense, rebounding, turnovers and other keys, this is a game the Deacs can pull out. And if Wake Forest passes the test, it will be further proof of what this team is capable of: contending in the ACC and making a return to the NCAA Tournament. News came out on Tuesday evening that UNC was indeed in contact with FSU transfer Matthew Cleveland. As a former five-star prospect with two years of eligibility remaining, the Atlanta native provides intriguing upside. He would fit well with RJ Davis and Armando Bacot, because he doesn't need a high volume of shots to be a scorer. He finishes well at the rim. He's not the defender Leaky Black was at the ‘3', but provides more offensively.Meanwhile, another twist in Harrison Ingram's recruitment: he's currently on a visit to Chapel Hill. Bryan Matthews, Caleb Jones, Henry Patton and Jay G. Tate reconvene for a new edition of The Rundown, which focuses on a curiosuly slow start for all of college football in the transfer portal. Auburn only has three offers out so far. The talent hasn't been there ... but much time remains for bigger names to make their intentions known. On the basketball side, Auburn saw center Peyton Marshall de-commit. This wasn't unexpected. The Tigers remain on the trail of several guys in the portal including Florida State wing Matthew Cleveland and Texas Tech wing Jaylon Tyson.  Softball and baseball were OK last weekend. Both must be better this weekend. The guys finish with a massive supply of shoutouts for the World's Greatest Message Boarders at The Bunker. Legends and studs galore. The show is presented by VooDoo Wing Company with locations in Auburn, Mobile, Tuscaloosa and Las Vegas. Check them out IN PERSON for delicious chicken or on the web at www.voodoowingco.com.

Matt and Michael are back to discuss the very real path for the Florida State Seminoles hoops team to the make the dance and do some damage in March! Annnnnnndddddd...........back to reality. FSU stinks. But the boys are back to bring the good news. Is the FSU basketball team terrible? Absolutely. But, not as terrible as they were in November, and it's all about peaking in March, right? Right? Hello? Okay, so the season is pretty much over, and it has been for a while, but if you've read this far you're obviously a basketball junkie or a glutton for punishment (is there a difference?). So some great stuff is discussed here. First of all, Matthew Cleveland is a beast. He grabbed a gear over a month ago and hasn't looked back. Last year he was 6th man of the year, and this year, if FSU were better, he'd be on the short list for conference player of the year. Suddenly, he's that good. And it's not a lock that he'll leave after the season. Some shout outs to Jalen Warley, Cam Corhen, and Darin Green are also in order. In short, we're seeing the nucleus of what could be a solid team next year. And next year is a must-win year for the coaching staff (and the fans), and so we talk roster construction. Matt recently asked Virginia's head coach Tony Bennett his thoughts on how building rosters is changing, and we dive into that as Bennett is one of the few coaches who will actually say what he thinks in press conferences. We wrap it up leaving some hope for next year, and maybe even a little for this one. Let us know where we're horribly wrong. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

ESPN reported the school's police department is investigating a report of computer access crimes from last month at Schembechler Hall, where coach Jim Harbaugh and his staff have offices and the Wolverines practice. Weiss said in a statement to ESPN that he is fully cooperating with investigators and looks forward to the matter being resolved. The Associated Press left messages seeking comment from Weiss and the university police department. NCAA – US appeals court to weigh NCAA case over pay for athletes The NCAA hopes a federal appeals court will soon block a lawsuit that seeks to treat athletes as employees who are paid for their time. It is the latest test of amateurism in college sports. The Division I athletes who filed the suit being argued next month want hourly wages similar to those earned in work-study programs. They say the nation's colleges are violating fair labor practices by failing to pay them for the time they put into their sports. Baylor University President Linda Livingston, chairperson of the NCAA’s Board of Governors, says the idea would have a “potentially catastrophic impact on college sports.” NFL – Warren ready to embrace new challenge as Bears president Kevin Warren is ready to tackle a new challenge as president and CEO of the Chicago Bears, and he has a big one going from Big Ten commissioner to leading a founding NFL franchise. A new suburban stadium could be on the horizon. The team owns the No. 1 pick in the draft coming off one of the worst seasons in franchise history. And he's looking forward to working with general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. He says he's a “big believer in challenges” and wouldn't have been as attracted to the job “if it were easy.” NFL – Browns hire Jim Schwartz as defensive coordinator A person familiar with the decision says the Cleveland Browns have hired former Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz as their defensive coordinator. Schwartz spent the past two seasons as a defensive adviser for Tennessee. Cleveland's search for a coordinator began last week when coach Kevin Stefanski fired Joe Woods after three seasons. The 56-year-old Schwartz began his NFL career as a scout with Cleveland in the 1990s. He will take over the Browns’ defense once he signs his contract, according to the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because that hasn't happened yet. Schwartz previously worked as a coordinator with the Titans, Bills and Eagles. He won a Super Bowl running Philadelphia's defense in 2017. Tennis – Australian Open – Hampered by bad hip, Nadal out in 2nd Rd of Australian Open Rafael Nadal says his hip was injured during a second-round loss at the Australian Open to Mackenzie McDonald. The 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 defeat abruptly ended Nadal’s title defense and bid for a record-extending 23rd Grand Slam trophy. Nadal pulled up awkwardly at the end of a point late in the second set against the 65th-ranked McDonald. The two schools will work with the Big Ten to reschedule the game. The two schools will work with the Big Ten to reschedule the game. All distributed tickets for the Northwestern-Iowa contest will be valid for the new date and time, if the game is able to be rescheduled. Iowa next plays at Ohio State on Saturday. Northwestern is scheduled to play Wisconsin at home Saturday. The No. 1-seeded Nadal was visited by a trainer on the sideline and then left the court for a medical timeout. His wife wiped away tears up in the stands. Nadal returned to play but was physically compromised and not his usual chase-every-ball self. The two schools will work with the Big Ten to reschedule the game. All distributed tickets for the Northwestern-Iowa contest will be valid for the new date and time, if the game is able to be rescheduled. Iowa next plays at Ohio State on Saturday. The No. 1-seeded Nadal was visited by a trainer on the sideline and then left the court for a medical timeout. His wife wiped away tears up in the stands. Nadal returned to play but was physically compromised and not his usual chase-every-ball self. Tomahawk Nation: for Florida State Seminoles fans

After the Florida State Seminoles started the 2022-23 season with a 1-9 record head coach Leonard Hamilton and his staff had to adjust and reconfigure, adapting from regularly having a roster of experienced players and trying to build cohesion behind FSU's newcomers amid a flurry of availability issues. In the month of December the Noles had a 4-3 record, which isn't incredibly eye-opening, but it shows that development within the roster is improving. The Seminoles currently stand at 5-11, ranked as the No. 4 team in the ACC. A tremendous part of their recent success has been the play of sophomore Matthew Cleveland. He came into the Seminoles program as a highly touted prospect, but there were technical issues to be dealt with before Cleveland took a step forward in his game. The biggest red flag was Cleveland's shooting ability, finishing the 2021-22 season with a 17.9% three-point percentage and a 55.5% free-throw percentage. Those numbers have massively improved after Cleveland spent a large portion of the offseason working on his shooting form. With a smoother jump shot in his arsenal, Cleveland is now shooting 42.9% (highest percentage on the roster) from distance and 74.3% from the free throw line. He also leads the Seminoles in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Cleveland's constant effort on the glass has led to five-straight double-doubles, becoming the first Seminole to do so since Doug Edwards in the 1991-92 season. Florida State has a hefty plate on their schedule with ACC opponents scattered throughout the next few months; with the addition of Baba Miller in their next game, the Noles can make some noise in the conference. Following the Seminoles win against Georgia Tech, Tomahawk Nation spoke with Cleveland on his newfound leadership role, thoughts on the Noles season, and the potential the current truly has. Getsy says the Bears won’t take Fields out of a game if he’s closing in on the record. But he also says the team won’t scheme for Fields to reach the mark. Fields has 1,000 yards rushing and has emerged as one of the NFL’s most exciting players. He needs 207 more yards to break Lamar Jackson’s mark from 2019, an average of 69 per game. The Bears started calling more runs for Fields after he struggled early in the season. The team’s dynasty began in earnest when Harris decided to keep running during a last-second heave by quarterback Terry Bradshaw in a playoff game against Oakland in 1972. His catch and run off a deflected pass gave the Steelers their first-ever playoff win. Harris’ son, Dok, told The Associated Press on Wednesday that his father died overnight. No cause of death was given. NFL – National Football League – Week 16 Tonight Jacksonville Jaguars at New York Jets, 8:15 p.m. NFL – Bears not necessarily scheming for Fields to break record Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy says he hopes Justin Fields breaks the NFL single-season record for rushing yards by a quarterback. NFL – Suspicious package causes brief lockdown at Bears’ facility The Chicago Bears’ practice facility was briefly on lockdown Wednesday because of a suspicious package. Team spokesman Brandon Faber says police were called. No one was allowed to leave or enter the team’s suburban campus for about an hour. The Bears practice about 30 miles north of Soldier Field. Chicago is scheduled to host the AFC East-leading Buffalo Bills on Saturday. NFL – Franco Harris, Steeler who caught Immaculate Reception, dies Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris has died at the age of 72 just days before the 50th anniversary of the “Immaculate Reception.” His catch for the Pittsburgh Steelers is considered the most iconic play in NFL history. Harris ran for 12,120 yards and won four Super Bowl rings with Pittsburgh in the 1970s. MLB – Cubs, All-Star SS Swanson finalize $177 million, 7-year deal All-Star shortstop Dansby Swanson has joined the Chicago Cubs, finalizing a $177 million, seven-year contract. The addition of Swanson is the biggest of three major moves by the Cubs since the end of the season. Right-hander Jameson Taillon signed a $68 million, four-year contract, and 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger got a $17.5 million, one-year deal. The 28-year-old Swanson is coming off perhaps his best big league season, hitting .277 with 25 homers and a career-best 96 RBIs in 162 games for Atlanta. MLB – Aaron Judge becomes Yanks captain, with Derek Jeter at side Aaron Judge has been appointed captain of the New York Yankees after agreeing to a $360 million, nine-year contract to remain in pinstripes. Judge became the Yankees’ first captain since Derek Jeter retired at the end of the 2014 season. New York had six previous captains in the Steinbrenner family era: Thurman Munson, Graig Nettles, Willie Randolph, Ron Guidry, Don Mattingly and Jeter. Judge homered in his first big league at-bat for the Yankees in 2016, and the 6-foot-7 outfielder has become a larger-than-life figure in the Bronx. Soccer – Pelé’s cancer worsens, kidneys and heart affected Doctors say Pelé’s health has worsened during his hospital stay to regulate his cancer medication. The hospital says in a statement that Pelé’s cancer has advanced and that he is under “elevated care” related to “kidney and cardiac dysfunctions.” One of his daughters says the 82-year-old Brazilian soccer great will remain at the Albert Einstein hospital in Sao Paulo for Christmas. Pelé is undergoing chemotherapy in his fight against cancer since he had a colon tumor removed in September 2021. Neither his family nor the hospital have said whether it had spread to other organs. Pelé led Brazil to victory the 1958, 1962 and 1970 World Cups. Soccer – Grant Wahl’s life celebrated at New York City gathering Grant Wahl was remembered for his peripatetic life as a sportswriter, pursuit of social justice and lasting impact on family, friends and people he mentored. Wahl died at age 49 from aortic aneurysm on Dec. 10 while covering a World Cup match in Qatar. A two-hour celebration of his life at The Times Center on Wednesday drew several hundred people, including colleagues and soccer officials. Wahl’s wife, Celine Gounder, spoke along with his brother, Eric Wahl, and former Sports Illustrated colleagues. Perhaps you've been distracted by FSU football being good again. Perhaps your tv subscription expired, or you haven't been able to drive to the Tuck, and your radio died, and you forgot how to use the internet, and your neighbor's dog steals the newspaper, and all your friends who love basketball left town. If so, you may be wondering exactly how good the 'Noles look this year. I mean, there's a core returning quartet of Matthew Cleveland, Caleb Mills, Cam'Ron Fletcher, and Jalen Warley. There are critical transfers in Jaylen Gainey and Darin Green. And the freshmen class looks to be the best in years with Baba Miller, De'Ante Green, Cameron Corhen, Tom House, Jeremiah Bembry and Chandler Jackson. Let's get excited, people! Well....we've got some news for you. Gainey blew his knee and will be out all year. So will De'Ante Green. So will Bembry. Chandler Jackson broke his thumb. Fletcher can't practice. And the jewel of the newcomers - Baba Miller - is suspended by the NCAA for a half a year because he attended his own team's training camp. Has anyone else noticed that FSU hoops has been cursed since Covid hit? Luckily the season opened against Stetson. Even with just 8 scholarship players, surely they'd roll Stetson. Right? The next game was tougher. A road game at UCF. How'd it go? Well, through two games there in one team in college basketball (looking at you Mississippi Valley State) that has been worse on the defensive glass than Florida State. And the rest of the defense has been intriguing at best. And the offense? Well, there's a ball and a basket and sometimes the two meet. So here we are, two games into the bright and shiny new season. Come along as Matt and Michael provide some insight. It's gonna be a long season folks, so get comfortable and go 'Noles. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

Hey! A hoops pod. No. 49 to be exact - we were hoping to save No. 50 for a national title recap but we'll try and squeeze some in between here and there. Maybe you've heard that some weird rumblings in the college football world are taking place. It's like LIV Golf only it matters. Looking forward, conference matchups like UCLA-Rutgers are gonna be lit. But we take a look from a basketball perspective (really, an all sports besides football perspective) which will hopefully come to fruition. Let football do its thing, and let the other sports maintain some sort of regional focus. After some conference talk (and yes, Minnesota really is a cool place to go see a game) we talk about the sport that matters: college basketball. Florida State is currently touring Canada which is full of nice people and maple syrup, and playing some games along the way. When you have so many new faces, having trips like this are priceless - just don't pay too much attention to the box scores. Oh, and four guys are out: Matthew Cleveland, De'Ante Green, Baba Miller, and Jeremiah Bembry. So one fake game into the season and we already have a walk-on in the starting lineup. Some things never change. Like Canada. After a break where we advertise something that is very important but I'm not sure what it is, we spend a few minutes gushing over FSU's sole 2023 recruit Taylor Bowen. It's hard to predict a class size because technically no one has to leave (assuming Gainey is awarded a Covid year), but we know it is at least one. And he's a good one. And that's that. Enjoy! It's a shame that so much of the conference perception is wrapped up in two things: the out-of-conference season, and the NCAA Tournament. Since the ACC expanded to 20 conference games, we go more than two months without playing anyone outside the conference, so it's tough to gauge who is improving and who isn't. Was UNC under-seeded? Nope, their resume wasn't that good. And that's all the committee has to go on. In the Florida State universe, we got two pieces of good news this week. The first was the commitment of Brown's Jaylan Gainey as a graduate transfer. Florida State will petition to get him another year, and he - along with all the Ivy schools - did not play a single game in the 2020-21 season. The other bit of good news is that Matthew Cleveland will be returning for his sophomore season. He's poised to have a big 2nd year in Tallahassee. Finally, we make projections for the National Title game. Who you got? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

This is March! Well, actually it's April, but there were some fun Final Four games in March Madness this weekend. And now there is only one game left. Who doesn't love a good buzzer beater? Not sue which was better - the pass or the shot, but the two came together and naturally Matt and Michael kick-off the podcast by discussing FSU's huge win over Virginia. On a side note, the Cavaliers now likely have to win the ACC Tournament to advance to March Madness, so it was a crushing blow to Tony Bennett and his horribly slow vision of college basketball. Florida State is now 7-2 in one-possession games this year (and 28-9 since the Jon Isaac, CJ Walker, Trent Forrest, Mfiondu Kabengele recruiting class). Beyond the big won, though, there's not a ton to talk about in terms of FSU and the post season. Could they pull a miracle? Sure, but unlikely. Can they beat Notre Dame and/or North Carolina State? Probably, but two losses certainly aren't out of the question. A win would ensure Florida State a winning season for the 17th straight year. But this is a season where the 'Noles will need to finish strong to make the NIT, which certainly isn't what FSU fans have come to expect. The next segment covers growth that we've seen in the absence of Malik Osborne, Anthony Polite, Caleb Mills, Naheem McCloud, and on occasion RayQuan Evans. The freshman trio of John Butler, Jalen Warley, and Matthew Cleveland have all shown flashes in their own way. If they're all back next year, how can we see them building on this season? There's also talk of FSU's favorite enigma, Cam'Ron Fletcher, who can look like an all-conference performer one half, and a Division II player the next. How does he fit in for next year, and can he find some consistency? Next weekend is senior day. It's not how they wanted to finish their careers, but get to the Tuck to cheer on Osborne, Polite, Evans, Wyatt Wilkes and the weatherman Harrison Prieto. Finally, we wrap it up with some golf talk, and why not? It's spring time. The grass is growing. The Players and the Masters are on the horizon. It's a good time to get outside and hit the links. Now that football has ceremoniously ended with a Charlie Brown kick, the basketball guys are back to delve a little bit deeper into the season. But first, unable to escape the vortex of FSU football, Matt and Michael speculate on how the situation faced by head coach Mike Norvell is similar to the one faced by Leonard Hamilton back in the day. The stakes are much higher with football, at least at Florida State, but where is Norvell on the Ham timeline? Next up is to recap some of the action since the last podcast. The team is 5-1, with the best win being a neutral site victory over a solid Loyola Marymount squad. They explore some early season trends, and how they might play out for the season, as well is digging into the performances of several players, most notably the new faces like Cam'Ron Fletcher, Matthew Cleveland, and the unicorn John Butler. Then come the previews. How good is Purdue? (spoiler alert: they're very, very good). In their first six games one team (a top-10 Villanova) has held them below 92 points. We don't really get into the dribble weave action which the defense will try to disrupt, but instead focus on the pieces they have. It's a toss up whether this will be FSU's most difficult game of the season, or it will be at Duke Or, whoever FSU faces in the Final Four, amiright. They feature a two-headed beast in the middle, and the guy coming off the bench was a preseason First Team All Big Ten selection. Plus they have a lottery pick who is beyond NBA ready. And a bevy of shooters to surround these dudes. The easier game - and probably more important to the season - comes this Saturday when the Syracuse Orange come to town. We're used to Syracuse featuring crazy long athletes all over the court, with at least of coup[e of NBA guys mixed in. Is it more of the same this year? Learn more about your ad choices.
