This episode was recorded at the 2025 Florida Ruminant Nutrition Symposium. Panelists Dr. John Goeser or Rock River Laboratory, Inc.; Dr. Bob Kozlowski, PAS of Dairy NExT, LLC and Dr. Tom Overton of Cornell University introduce themselves and give an overview of their backgrounds. (0:10)Dr. Goeser begins with three different ways to define forage quality: energetic potential, particle size as an interaction factor, and anti-nutritional components. He asks Dr. Kozlowski if these are the hot topics for his consulting clients. (6:53)When evaluating the energy potential in feed, Dr. Goeser states there's nothing new as far as measuring the nutrient content of feeds, but capturing the nutrient digestion potential in fiber, starch, and fatty acids is an area where we could stand to make sizable strides. We've been studying fiber and starch digestion for more than 50 years, and they're still really hard to measure because nutrient digestion potential is not linear. In the laboratory, ruminal fiber digestion is measured at many different time points to create curves, but if we want to get a good handle on the energy potential in feeds, we need to take a total digestible nutrients approach. (9:31)Dr. Goeser feels there are more similarities between laboratories in quantifying fiber digestion potential, but there is little agreement among labs for starch digestion. Research shows that seven hour starch digestion is dramatically affected by laboratory technique and starch digestion curves also vary widely among labs. Dr. Overton commends the lab for diligently working to understand these dynamics. (14:31)From a fiber standpoint, Dr. Kozlowsk states that uNDF has probably been one of the most significant improvements in the tools he has to work with. He gives an example of cows on a 45% forage diet in the Southeast and cows on a 60% forage diet in the Northeast, both with similar uNDF concentrations. Those two groups of cows perform very similarly in terms of volume, fat and protein. (18:43)Dr. Overton asks both guests for their take on feed hygiene. Dr. Goeser feels that there is at least 10 times more to learn about feed hygiene compared to fiber and starch digestibility. Merging veterinary diagnostics with commercial nutrition laboratory work shows promise for solving undesirable mold, yeast, mycotoxin and bacteria issues in feeds. In case studies, he states there is never just one issue at play; there are two or three that may have negative associative effects with one another. Dr. Kozlowski has been seeing varietal-dependent corn silage DON toxin levels in the last few years. Dairies are now looking at all aspects of the agronomy program in addition to all the other assessments of NDF digestibility and starch. (20:33)Dr. Goeser goes on to describe some work on large dairies where they're finding hidden nutrient variation and starch and protein flux that happens within a 1-2 week period that we aren't able to capture with our current sampling techniques. For dairies feeding 2,000-15,000 cows, a diet formulation is on point today, but within that 1-2 week period at the volume of feed they're going through, the diet is now out of spec. However, it's not so out of line that the cows are giving feedback in terms of components or deviation in production or intake. (30:08)On the cow side, new technologies like SCR are allowing insights into rumination dynamics, which can be applied to feed formulation. Some silage choppers now have NIR units measuring silage quality during harvest. The panelists discuss what other technologies might be on the horizon, including on-farm NIR units on front-end loaders or mixer trucks. Dr. Goeser mentions some of the challenges with these technologies, including feed moisture levels interfering with equipment and lack of trust in technologies. (34:21)The panelists close out the episode with their take-home messages. It's a beautiful situation when a manager and dentist truly co-pilot the practice! It takes work to reach that balance though. For this deep dive into the manager-dentist dynamic, I gathered three dentists in different stages of their careers. They shared what worked and - more importantly - what didn't work. They also shared how they show appreciation for their team (hint: constant and sincere expressions work best). Laughs were definitely shared all around when discussing our missteps - learn from us! The best managers I've encountered are true vision partners in the practice. Dentists want and need us to reach their full business potential. I hope this episode shines a light on how awesome this partnership can be. Huge thanks to Curve Dental for sponsoring this episode! This show was recorded 25 May 2023 and can be viewed on our website here. To join us live for future shows and ask your own questions, please view and sign up for upcoming events in our Knowledge Center. Thank you for listening! This panel discussion is all about navigating off-label use and implementing strategies to improve medical device safety. As we all know, ensuring the safety and efficacy of medical devices is critical to protecting patients and minimizing risks to healthcare providers. However, one of the key challenges manufacturers face is how to identify and handle off-label use, especially with the transition to MDR 2017/745. During the discussion, our experts in device development, regulatory compliance and clinical evaluation shared insights on how to manage off-label use, reduce indications, define indications and contra-indications, as well expand indications using real-world data from post-market surveillance. We dove into the complexities of post-market surveillance and the importance of PMCF data in identifying off-label use. We also explored strategies for optimizing regulatory efforts while maintaining patient safety. Key questions for our audience include: Have you had to restrict or reduce the indications for your device as part of the transition to MDR 2017/745? Are you struggling to define your indications and contra-indications for your device? Have you started to see examples of off-label use cropping up as your PMCF data comes back in? Are you trying to expand your indications using real-world data from post-market surveillance? Are you struggling to handle instances of off-label use within your risk management process? Our panelists provided valuable insights into these questions and more from the audience! We hope you'll give this show a listen. End of year tax planning is key to this process. Section 179 is especially appealing because small businesses have the ability to deduct the full purchase price of equipment or software the year the equipment is purchased and deduct the full purchase price from their taxable earnings and before paying off the loan. Panelists Dr. Holly Jean Buck of the University at Buffalo and Chris Barnard of the American Conservation Coalition join host Radhika Moolgavkar of Nori for this policy-focused episode of Carbon Removal Newsroom. In April of 2021, Raj Kumar Singh, an Indian energy Minister, said at a UN conference that rich countries need to be net-negative and remove atmospheric co2 to account for historical emissions. While decades of climate diplomacy focused on emissions to come, Singh worked to shift the conversation towards pollution already emitted. Later last year, journalist and author of popular climate book The Uninhabitable Earth David Wallace-Wells penned Climate Reparations in New York Magazine. The long-form piece connected the inequitable effects of climate change, more drastically and quickly hitting tropical and global south countries, with the political outcomes made possible by carbon removal technology. He points out that half of emissions come from 10% of the world's population and that climate change has already decreased the GDP of some global south countries, while it has increased GDPs in the global North. This dynamic will continue and will widen already stark global wealth inequalities. Wells reviews the field of technical CDR and finds that while it could present temptation for delay, it also provides revolutionary possibilities if historical emitters are made to pay to remove their pollution. He calls this ‘climate reparations' and quotes philosopher Olufemi Taiwo (who coined that term) “It's just so clear to me that carbon removal is squarely the kind of thing that fits into the reparations framework.” In this episode, we discuss the Wallace-Wells' piece and zoom in on climate reparations and climate colonialism, defining these phrases in more depth and explaining how these approaches might impact policies and institutions. We also discuss the idea that carbon removal is not limited by physics, so what is carbon removal scaling limited by? We round out the episode with the good news and the interesting news of the week, then we bid a warm farewell to our beloved co-host Holly, who will be going on sabbatical for the year. We will miss you Holly and look forward to seeing you back on the show! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/carbonremovalnewsroom/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/carbonremovalnewsroom/support

This week on Carbon Removal Newsroom, we're recapping a year of carbon removal— what went right, what went wrong, and what we're expecting in 2022. In 2021, terms like Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), Negative Emissions Technologies (NETs) entered mainstream climate discourse, corporate plans, and government agendas. The IPCC's 6th Assessment Report was released in August and underscored the need for carbon removal by highlighting the likelihood of global overshooting of the Paris goals. The United States supported DAC and carbon storage like never before with the Bipartisan Infrastructure bill passed in November. Climeworks launched its Orca facility in Iceland, which is making rocks underground out of our atmospheric carbon pollution as we speak. Nasdaq purchased a carbon removal marketplace. A growing share of the world's economy was covered by ambitious net-zero commitments, which imply that maybe, at some point, corporations and governments might start removing a lot of co2 from the air. Meanwhile, Exxon snapped up some prime carbon storage property in the Gulf of Mexico, United Airlines started assuaging travelers with advertisements of airline-sponsored DAC, and China said it might keep a few coal plants open down the line but cancel out the emissions by capturing atmospheric carbon. Those stories, plus so many more, made 2021 a landmark year for the field (and we didn't even say the words Elon Musk). Let's rundown the year that was and look ahead to 2022. Panelists Dr. Holly Jean Buck of the University at Buffalo and Chris Barnard of the American Conservation Coalition join host Radhika Moolgavkar of Nori for this episode. This week on Carbon Removal Newsroom, we're starting off with an overview of biochar and discussing the main questions and concerns around this technology, including: How does biochar compare to other Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) methods? There is a lot of interest in making biochar, but does the market exist to use it? What can governments do to help scale up the use of biochar as a carbon removal technique? Are any governments taking action yet? Next, we transition to the CDR policy agenda in the United States. We look at the California Climate Crisis Act (AB 1395), which would Codify California's commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible and no later than 2045. If passed, this bill will set California on course to design a more comprehensive policy framework for CDR than exists in any state so far. The bill language is explicit in planning for technological as well as natural CDR methods and calls for measurable, durable CO2 removal. We also cover geoengineering and its controversies, looking at the Politico article, “The problem with playing God to fix the climate: It might not work.” Finally, our good news to round out the episode is that the team at ClimateScience has created a free online course on the science of carbon removal, with illustrations and quizzes along the way. I'm very excited for this episode, especially with this dynamic group---who are willing to dialogue openly about some controversial topics---more specifically---on Critical Race Theory. Disclaimer: The point of this discussion is not for either position to "win." It's to present a clear picture of why each side is passionate about their stance. My hope is to exemplify why candid, uncomfortable, and perhaps, tense dialogue with the "opposing side"---is the most important step to an authentic start to better race relations for this country. Panelists: Dr. Kayla Thompson Erec Smith Desi-Rae (Just Thinking Out Loud) Alma Cook Sam Hoadly-Brill pH.D Chris Choiniere Nicole Chilaka-Ukpo *The original goal was to have 8 panelists. Last minute, we ended up with 7 panelists. The uneven groups were not intentional.*

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically and perhaps even permanently changed the way higher education delivers instruction. This change will heavily impact faculty, students, staff, and administrators. In this webcast replay, join CoopLew and Diverse: Issues In Higher Education for a national conversation about three big diversity-related questions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Tune in as these higher education experts provide the answers to questions that impact issues such as access, accessibility, and possibilities for the future. Find out what equity issues they foresee in online education, suggestions they have for pedagogical techniques, and their advice for first-generation students who are coping with the transition. PANELISTS: Dr. Ken D. Coopwood, Co-Founder, CoopLew Ms. Kelly Hermann, Vice President of Accessibility, Equity and Inclusion, University of Phoenix Dr. Amber Smith, Vice President for Inclusion and Equity, University of Indianapolis KEY POINTS / MAIN TAKEAWAYS: The gains and losses from the rush to go online How to make up for the voids of online education Anxiety about online performance and instruction Technology as a scapegoat for declines in student performances Moving the needle toward online access for all: reality or delusion? QUOTABLES: “Online education can be done very well. There are examples where it has been done very well. But this is not a reflection of that. This is a reflection of a response to an emergency crisis to ensure that our students were able to maintain their educational experience.” “We have to be mindful of what equity really looks like. It's not that it's always convenient, or that it is even all the time necessarily the most profitable, but I genuinely believe when you invest in integrity, you will get a return on your investment.” PRODUCTS / RESOURCES MENTIONED: Diverse and CoopLew Partnership to Spark Wave of Diversity Initiatives, Research, and Literature - Read the article here: https://diverseeducation.com/article/159299/ Visit the Diverse: Issues in Higher Education website: https://diverseeducation.com/ Or follow us on social media: Twitter: https://twitter.com/diverseissues Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/diverseissuesinhighereducation/ Facebook: https://web.facebook.com/DiverseJobs?_rdc=1&_rdr LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/diverse-issues-in-higher-education/
