Avery is a pop-punk band that started in the NJ music scene in 1999. What started as just Nina on bass and Janet singing while playing drums, evolved over the years, with Jess coming on as guitarist, Janet moving up to vocals and keys, and Mike joining on drums. Over the next 10+ years, Avery played hundreds of shows including multiple festivals, toured nationally, and released two records. Avery songs were also featured on multiple television shows on Nickelodeon, Disney, and MTV. The band also wrote the theme song for a commercial for Rebelle Friendship Bags. After a 10 year hiatus, Avery reunited in the summer of 2019 for a series of reunion shows with fellow bands from the NJ pop punk music scene. Though the members are split between the east and west coast, Avery will continue playing occasional shows throughout the year (it was way too fun not to do it again). I got Janet and Nina on the Zoom and this is what we chat about: Growing up together Pillow changing their minds about starting a band How they felt at shows The origins of the name Avery Recording at Portrait Studios Their connection to Black Flag and the Misfits Breaking Marky Ramone's drumset Nina's sparkle bass Getting songs played on Nickelodeon and Disney How did the band end Playing the 2019 show after one practice the night before And a ton more Click here to hire my Sister who's a Realtor in Plymouth, MA Click here for Piebald's upcoming shows Click here to Check out Janet's DJ night Sun, Dec 14 at 2:30 PM at Wonderville on 1186 Broadway, Brooklyn, New York.
Gabrielle Nevaeh's journey to Stranger Things: The First Shadow feels like a real-time coming-of-age story. In our conversation, she opens up about growing up painfully shy in Florida, discovering acting at a performing arts school, and then making the leap to Los Angeles at just twelve years old with nothing but six suitcases and a dream. From navigating the whirlwind of Nickelodeon fame, to essentially attending “Nick High,” to juggling seven different shows while finishing high school, she shares how she slowly learned to trust her instincts, embrace her authentic self, and listen less to the external noise. That confidence is exactly what carried her into one of the wildest audition processes I've ever heard, including a full seven-hour callback in New York where she literally performed the entire play as a one-woman show. Once she stepped into the world of Stranger Things, everything changed. Gabrielle talks about finding her voice onstage eight shows a week, building Patty Newby from the ground up, and experiencing that electric moment when the season five trailer drops in the theater and the audience erupts. We dive into the emotional weight of this role, the physical demands of doing an “action movie” every night, and why she actually loves a rowdy audience member who shouts back at the actors. She also reflects on how surreal it is to walk the line between longtime Nickelodeon kids who know her comedy work and the massive Stranger Things fans who now show up dressed like Patty or get props from the show tattooed on their bodies. Gabrielle Nevaeh is an award-nominated actor known for standout work on Nickelodeon's All That, That Girl Lay Lay, Danger Force, and as the voice of Clawdeen Wolf in Monster High. Her credits also include Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, Curses, and hosting duties for major Nickelodeon events including the Kids' Choice Awards. She earned a Young Artist Award and an Emmy nomination for her on-screen work before making her Broadway debut as Patty Newby in Stranger Things: The First Shadow, where she continues to shape the character in collaboration with the creative team. *This episode contains content that may be triggering for some listeners.* From the whirlwind of a rock and roll upbringing to the heights of pop stardom, Chynna Phillips’ life has been anything but ordinary. The daughter of music legends, Chynna navigated the complexities of a turbulent childhood while in the glare of public attention, which left her searching for her own identity. Yet, even in the midst of the spotlight and the challenges, a profound spiritual awakening offered her a path to healing and self-discovery. Later in the episode, we’ll hear from Tiffany Espensen, an actress, content creator, wife, and mom. Tiffany’s journey began with her adoption from China and her upbringing in California, where her passion for performing blossomed, leading to roles with Disney, Nickelodeon, and Marvel. Tiffany shares her thoughts on the significance of adoption in her life and how she’s discovered meaning and identity in both her on-screen roles and her life at home. It is a very universal lyric, and everyone can sort of identify with just holding on for one more day.” - Chynna Phillips “Once I started to pray and I started seeing all of this abundance of answered prayer pouring out onto my life, that validated for me that I am loved by God because He’s listening to me.” - Chynna Phillips “There’s something about girl power and being around your Christian friends and they pray for you and you confess to one another—and it’s just a beautiful thing.” - Chynna Phillips “When people have the courage to be transparent with me and talk to me about what’s really going on in their lives, not only does it bless them because they get to confess with somebody and talk with somebody, but it blesses me because I know they trust me and I know that they are opening up to me and being vulnerable with me.” - Chynna Phillips “When I started playing different characters, it made me talk to more people and be open to hearing their stories and asking their thoughts. It really made me think about different personalities of people and their different quirks and their behavior. So it really makes you empathetic.” - Tiffany Espensen “We all have different roles in life and we’re all a different role to someone else. We’re a daughter, a son, a sister, a nephew, an employee, a boss, a co-worker. Everything comes and goes in your life—people, jobs, opportunities—but Jesus is the one thing that will remain constant. He’s with you through it all.” - Tiffany Espensen “I feel like God puts people in your life that you need, and I feel like once I kind of talk it out with people outside of my own head—people that I trust and good people of faith as well—it definitely balances my brain out.” - Tiffany Espensen ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! As longtime listeners know, I worked in the animation industry before switching careers and going into broadcasting. Today's episode features a trio of conversations that trace the history of animation in my lifetime, and my life in animation. The interviews come from Between Imaginary Worlds, a chat show that's available exclusively to listeners who pledge $5 a month or more on Patreon. Act I: I bond with comic book and children's book author Judd Winick over the creepy world of 1970s children's TV – which scared us as kids but makes us oddly nostalgic today. Act II: My friend Caleb Meurer and I reminisce about his experience working with the original crew of SpongeBob at Nickelodeon, and how the creator of SpongeBob indirectly told me I was in the wrong field. Act III: Aidan Sugano and Denis-Jose Francois talk about the heartfelt effort it took for the animation studio DNEG to make the film Nimona after Disney dropped the project. Nickelodeon, making reboots cool before the term reboot even existed (for media at least!). This week's pick takes a show from the 1970s and brings it to the Orange Years. But does this show fit the vibe? Listen and find out!
Blue Sky host Bill Burke first met Scott Nash nearly 30 years ago, when both were working in the cable television business. In the years since, Scott has gone on to a successful career in publishing, both as an illustrator and an author, and with his wife Nancy co-founded Illustration Institute on a small island in Maine. In this episode, Scott describes his outgoing, experimental, and optimistic nature and how these traits have led to his remarkable success in publishing, art direction, and non-profit entrepreneurship. Chapters: 00:00 Introduction & Early Childhood Scott shares that he moved nine times before second grade, which taught him to make new friends and thrive on connection, fueling his optimism and artistic development. 03:47 Education and Early Career Scott Nash discusses his education at the Swain School of Design and Cranbrook, an experimental school that shaped his playful approach to design. 09:05 Early Days of Cable TV Scott highlights how their 'handmade' approach to branding for networks like Nickelodeon, which included assigning the color orange and constantly changing logos, stood out in an industry that traditional executives weren't taking seriously. 14:20 The Flat Stanley Phenomenon Scott Nash discusses his work illustrating Flat Stanley, a book that became a widespread educational phenomenon due to teachers encouraging kids to create and mail their own Flat Stanley figures. 19:16 Illustrating vs. Writing Own Books Scott Nash reflects on the differences and joys of illustrating books for other authors, like Flat Stanley, versus writing and illustrating his own works, such as The High Skies Adventures of Blue Jay the Pirate. 23:05 Defining Illustration & Illustration Institute's Founding Scott Nash defines illustration as 'visual art that enhances a specific narrative,' encompassing comics, graphic novels, and even narrative pottery. He explains how his passion for academia and 'rogue schools' led him to establish the illustration department at Maine College of Art and, later, co-found the Illustration Institute. 31:19 Highlighting Illustrators & Their Impact Scott Nash shares his love for classic children's book illustrators like Garth Williams, known for Stuart Little and Homer Price, and Robert McCloskey, famous for Make Way for Ducklings. He recounts the emotional and intellectual impact of Illustration Institute's exhibitions, which showcase original works and highlight the often-uncredited illustrators behind beloved stories. 34:27 AI's Impact on Creativity and Authenticity Scott Nash discusses the cyclical nature of creative trends, noting a shift from highly creative, handmade works in the early days of cable to a more corporate, homogenized phase. He expresses critical optimism about AI, hoping it will spur a countertrend towards more authentic, handmade creations. 39:59 Ethical Concerns and Public Voice in AI Scott Nash expresses concern about the business-driven rush to implement AI without a clear ethical framework, fearing it could lead to low-quality content and potential harm if not properly regulated. 42:45 Future of Illustration Institute & Closing Scott Nash details the Illustration Institute's future plans, including developing traveling exhibitions for libraries across the country, such as 'The Great State of Illustration in Maine' and the ambitious 'Illustrious Saurus,' which explores dinosaur depictions from paleontology to fantasy. He emphasizes the institute's mission to highlight illustration's critical rigor and broad appeal, connecting Maine's artistic reach with global themes and sharing his childlike enthusiasm for storytelling.
Megan and Jeni dive into the Nickelodeon stars we grew up watching – where they ended up, who surprised them, and which former child actor is now a pastor (!). From All That to Zoey 101, they're catching up with Kenan Thompson, Drake Bell, Jennette McCurdy, Keke Palmer, Ariana Grande, and more. They also dig into the darker side of kids' TV, accusations against Dan Schneider, and how many of these stars are now writing memoirs, hosting podcasts, or exposing the industry that raised them. It's a nostalgic deep dive with plenty of shock factors, wild career pivots, and all the Nickelodeon tea you wanna know.Follow us on social!Instagram: @whatwerewatchingpod TikTok: @whatwerewatchingpod
Two friends and academics recap classic literature and take it off its pedestal. This season, we are only looking at banned and controversial texts. In our seventy-third episode, and to celebrate Internation Men's Day, we look at our blokiest book yet: William Golding's Lord of the Flies (1954). Our accents get a workout, we debate the correct pronunciation of 'conch', and learn that they don't teach this kind of thing on Nickelodeon (or, indeed, Nick At Nite).Cover art © Catherine Wu.Episode Theme: Kampen Boys Choir, 'O Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem'. As Matt and Laci work on the transition from Load Bearing Beams to 1-Week Rental, they are unlocking some episodes from behind the Patreon paywall to hold you over. First up: Matt is joined by his friends and bandmates Wade Hymel and Patrick Perot to cover two episodes of Nickelodeon's Doug. "Bangin' On A Trash Can" is one of the best songs ever written for a fictional character, right? We gush endlessly about it, as well as its "Think Big" remix, and try to find parallels between Doug's band and our own individual musical endeavors. Plus, you'll learn way more than you could possibly be interested in learning about the history of Rural Route Nine. And of course, it's a larger discussion of Nickelodeon's Doug and the wider history of Nickelodeon and Nicktoons, plus the sad migration of Doug into the greasy maw of the Walt Disney Company, where he was badassified with baggier clothes and a dog who rides a motorcycle. We also discuss the original Doug pilot, "Doug Can't Dance." There's a fake Quailman at the school dance, a girl wearing a physics-defying donut costume, and Roger Klotz condemned to eternal torment like a slug on the ground. Also, we ponder how bad Doug would be at having sex for the first time. If you haven't revisited Doug since the 1990s, you might be surprised to find how well it works on every level — it looks great, it sounds incredible, and it's kind of hilarious. A great time is had by all, is what we're saying. "You know you can always find a friend down at the Roundhouse," until Nickelodeon cancels it and never does anything else with it. This is the second appearance of Scott Christian Sava on StoryBeat. Scott's an artist, animator, illustrator, writer, director, and producer, whose work over the last 30 years, has brought some of the world's most beloved characters to life in film, television, comics, and games, from Casper the Friendly Ghost to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Star Trek to Spider-Man and more. Scott's unique talents and vision have been called upon by Marvel Comics, Disney, Universal Studios, Nickelodeon, and various others. In 2000, he founded Blue Dream Studios, which, in addition to creating its own line of kids' graphic novels, has produced work for Star Wars, The X-Files, Aliens vs. Predator, and other franchises. The studio's first feature film, Animal Crackers, is available on Netflix and was the summer of 2020's #1 animated movie in the world. I've read Scott's latest book, “Becoming an Artist: How to Make Art Like a Human by Embracing Failure, Discovering Your Creative Voice, and Finding Joy in the Process.” I found the very useful concepts of Becoming an Artist easy and fun to read while being highly inspirational for anyone seeking to become a finely tuned artist. Scott also produces videos online dedicated to his over 4 million followers where he talks about art, autism, and how to be both a kindlier artist and human. Scott's mission is to “make the world a kinder, gentler place, one story at a time.”
