What was a witch's familiar, and why did these animal spirits sit at the heart of English witch trials? Returning guest Dr. Holly Bamford joins hosts Josh Hutchinson and Sarah Jack to explain the witch's familiar, the witch's mark, and the overlooked history of male witches in early modern England. Learn what the familiar meant, how the witch's mark was used as evidence, why the witch-familiar bond mirrored motherhood, and why men accused of witchcraft were not simply feminized. Featuring Agnes Waterhouse and her cat Satan, John Bysack and his six snails, and John Palmer's familiar named Jezebel. What a witch's familiar was in English witchcraftWhy the familiar mattered so much in witch trialsHow the witch's mark was used as evidenceWho was accused of being a male witchWhy men accused of witchcraft were not feminizedHow the witch-familiar bond mirrored motherhoodWhy Agnes Waterhouse and her cat Satan became a foundational caseWhat John Palmer's familiar Jezebel reveals about marriage00:00 Familiars in Trials01:01 Meet Dr Bamford02:08 Conference Paper Idea04:14 What Is a Familiar07:51 Pamphlets and Audiences11:47 Counting Trials Limits15:03 Agnes Waterhouse Case19:21 Marks and Teats22:56 Motherhood and Familiars31:52 Male Witches and Snails41:49 Humanoid Familiar Jezebel46:27 Further Reading Wrap48:53 Modern Meaning Outro#WitchTrials #Witchcraft #WitchsFamiliar #WitchesMark #MaleWitches #WitchcraftHistory #EarlyModernEngland #Familiars #Folklore #AgnesWaterhouse #HistoryPodcast #WitchHunts #EndWitchHuntsBuy: Witchcraft, the Devil, and Emotions in Early Modern England by Charlotte-Rose Millar https://bookshop.org/a/90227/9780367204549Buy the book Cunning-Folk and Familiar Spirits by Emma Wilby https://bookshop.org/a/90227/9781845190798Register for the Magic and Witchcraft Conference June 24-25 Online & In Personhttps://www.eventbrite.com/e/magic-and-witchcraft-conference-2026-nature-and-the-supernatural-tickets-1989231567166End Witch Hunts: https://www.endwitchhunts.orgThe Thing About Witch Hunts: https://aboutwitchhunts.com
In The Dominion of Providence, Witherspoon shows how God rules the world in righteousness, managing even the violence and wickedness of men for His glory. In this influential sermon preached in 1776, Witherspoon calls his hearers to defend their liberties and fulfil their civil duties in humble submission to the wisdom, justice, and goodness of God. -Chapel Library is a ministry of Mount Zion Bible Church, a Christ-centered church in Pensacola, Florida. for this and other sermons go to chapellibrary org.

Most B2B content fails for a simple reason: it talks about the company instead of the customer. In this episode, Nick Centera explains how great marketers find the intersection between what the business wants to say and what customers actually care about—and why anything else turns into what he calls a “glorified pamphlet.” Nick shares a practical approach for uncovering real customer insight, mapping it to the buyer journey, and turning features into stories that people remember. We also explore the emotional side of B2B marketing—something many teams ignore even though every purchase still comes down to people making decisions. If your content feels busy but not effective, this conversation will help you rethink how you plan, structure, and tell better marketing stories. What you'll learn in this episode:Why most B2B content fails when it focuses on the company instead of the customerHow to find the intersection between business goals and customer needsPractical ways to capture the voice of the customer (even in complex industries)How to map content across the buyer journey—from awareness to decisionThe difference between listing features and communicating real benefitsWhy emotional connection still matters in high-value B2B dealsHow storytelling principles from filmmaking can strengthen marketing contentA simple test to ensure your content answers the most important question: “Why should the customer care?”About Nick CenteraNick Centera is a marketer in the renewable energy sector who focuses on using storytelling to connect complex industries with the people they serve. Before entering marketing, Nick worked in film and production with the goal of becoming a cinematographer. That background in storytelling now shapes how he approaches marketing—especially in technical B2B environments.Over the past decade, he has built marketing strategies that combine customer insight, narrative structure, and business goals to create content that resonates beyond product features.Nick also hosts the Renewable Storytellers podcast, where he speaks with leaders across the utility-scale energy space about the people and stories powering the industry.Connect with Nick:LinkedInPodcast – Renewable StorytellersQcells EPCText us what you think about this episode!
Renaissance history is so much wilder and weirder than you would have expected. Very fun chatting with Ada Palmer (historian, novelist, and composer based at the University of Chicago). Some especially fascinating things I learned from the conversation and her excellent book, Inventing the Renaissance:Not only did Gutenberg go bankrupt in the 1450s (after inventing the printing press), but so did the bank that foreclosed on him, and so did his apprentices. This is because paper was still very expensive, and so you had to make this big upfront CAPEX decision to print a batch of 300 copies of a book - say the Bible. But he's in a small landlocked German town where only priests are allowed to read the Bible - so he sells maybe 7 copies. It's only when this technology ends up in Venice, where you can hand 10 copies to each of 30 ship captains going to 30 different cities, that it starts taking off.Speaking of which, the printing revolution wasn't just one single discrete event, just as the computer revolution has been this whole century of going from mainframes -> personal computers -> phones -> social media, each with different and accelerating social impact. Books came first, but they're slow to print, and made in small batches. The real revolution is pamphlets - much faster, much harder to censor. Pamphlet runners are how you can have Luther's 95 Theses go from Wittenberg to London in 17 days.So much other wild stuff from this episode. For example, did you know that the largest and best-funded experimental laboratory in 17th century Europe was very likely the Roman one run by inquisitors? Ada jokes that the Inquisition accidentally invented peer review. The focus of the Inquisition is really misunderstood - it was obsessed with catching dangerous new heretics like Lutherans and Calvinists - it only executed one person for doing science. And this leads Ada to make an observation that I think is really wise: the authorities and censors are always worried about the exact wrong things given 20/20 hindsight. When Inquisition raids an underground bookshop during the French Enlightenment, they don't mind the Rousseau, Voltaire, and Encyclopédie, but they lose their minds about some Jansenist treatises about the technical nature of the Trinity.More broadly, a lesson for me from this episode is that it's just really hard to shape history in the specific way that you want to impact things. One of the most famous medieval scholars is this guy Petrarch. He survives the Black Death in the 1340s, watches his friends die to plague and bandits, and says: our leaders are selfish and terrible, we need to raise them on the Roman classics so they'll act like Cicero. So Europe pours money into finding ancient manuscripts, building libraries, and educating princes on classical virtues. Those princes grow up and fight bigger, nastier wars than ever before with new deadlier technology. And this, combined with greater urbanization and endemic plague, results in European life expectancy decreasing from 35 in the medieval period to 18 during the Renaissance (the period which we in retrospect think of as a golden age but which many people living through it thought of as the continuation of the dark ages that had persisted since the fall of Rome).Anyways, the libraries Petrarch inspires stick around, the printing press makes them accessible to everyone, and 200 years later a generation of medical students is reading Lucretius and asking “what if there are atoms and that's how diseases work?” which eventually leads to germ theory, vaccines, and a cure for the Black Death (Ada has longer more involved explanation of how cosplaying the Romans results through a series of many steps to the scientific revolution). Petrarch wanted to produce philosopher-kings that shared his values. Instead he created a world that doesn't share his values at all but can cure the disease that destroyed his.Watch on YouTube; read the transcript.Sponsors* Jane Street is still waiting on someone to solve their backdoor puzzle… They're accepting submissions until April 1st and have set aside $50,000 for the best attempts. What is a Reformed Baptist Church? Pamphlets, booklets, and sermon series have been produced to answer this question for decades. Although their presence online may indicate large numbers, this would be mistaken. If the visible church is likened to a tree, how did the Reformed Baptist branch shoot out? What is the good, the bad, and the ugly, especially in North America in the last and present century? Have you visited a Reformed Baptist local church before? What was its ethos? Gird your loins as we scratch the surface on what a Reformed Baptist Church is.

Tonight, we'll read about cooking alternatives to wheat, from the 1918 pamphlet “Foods That Will Win the War”. Although the United States did not have food rationing in World War I as it did in World War II, it did rely heavily on propaganda campaigns at the time to persuade people to curb their food consumption. Pamphlets like this one were part of a vast public education effort. Recipes were tailored to use corn, oats, rye, rice, and even potato flour in place of wheat, encouraging families to support soldiers overseas through their kitchen tables. These simple substitutions reflected a broader spirit of sacrifice and civic duty, where everyday meals became part of the national war effort. Herbert Hoover, who led the Food Administration before later becoming President, became known as “the Great Humanitarian” for organizing food relief. His “wheatless” and “meatless” campaigns not only shifted American eating habits, but also demonstrated how propaganda and practical instruction could merge to shape daily life during wartime. — read by 'N' — Sign up for Snoozecast+ to get expanded, ad-free access by going to snoozecast.com/plus!
