Thrilled to share my chat with the inspiring and nimble Noelle Green, Director of Physical Production at Netflix on the Original Series.  Prior to Netflix, Noelle was a VP in Physical Production at Legendary Pictures and oversaw such projects as Kong: Skull Island and Krampus. The majority of her career was spent freelancing as a production supervisor or coordinator. She eventually began working as a line producer in the 90s where she was often the only woman of color sets of 500 or more people. This experience planted a seed that eventually led her to be one of the founders of the Producers Inclusion Initiative, a joint effort between Netflix and Shondaland to help bring up more underrepresented people in the line producer path. It's truly important work that I cherish as she's helped create opportunities for many. In this episode, Noelle takes us through digging into her grit to go from struggling single mother to a Netflix exec, speaks on the importance of inclusion in the workplace and shares her wisdom on how she dealt with the frustratingly impermeable boys' club. Key Takeaways:  Be nimble and flexible, but never compromise yourself. Lean into frustration Know what you bring to the table and then bring it to the table.

Meet Carolina Groppa! Carolina is a Producer and Podcaster. She's worked as a freelance producer for over a decade across all platforms and in both narrative and documentary mediums. Carolina earned her first, of what I'm sure will be more to come, Emmy nomination in Producing for the documentary Autism in Love. Most recently, a narrative film she produced this past year – Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul, had its premiere at Sundance. Along with all her work in film & TV, Carolina also self-produces (I'd expect nothing less of a producer!) a wonderful and informative podcast called - Angle On Producers (AOP). On AOP she has in-depth conversations with many of today's most progressive and innovative film & TV producers. AOP is how I discovered Carolina, and in our chat, we get into how she started AOP out of curiosity and with an aim to highlight the unvarnished truth of what it takes to work in film & TV as a producer and about all the different types of producers it takes to bring projects to fruition. We also talk about her journey, going from a freelance producer in physical production to pivoting and becoming a production executive at Issa Rea's production company – ColorCreative as the Head of Physical Production. And the thing I find most wonderful about Carolina is that she is a poster child for following your passion and curiosity, as the opportunity to become a part of the ColorCreative team stemmed directly from her creating her podcast in the first place. In March of 2020, as Will Smith is filming the biopic "King Richard," the emergence of COVID-19 abruptly shuts down all production. With unusual downtime and an urge to uplift his audience amid looming uncertainty, the actor meets with his production team at Westbrook Media to find a creative solution. What if they created a variety show with Will as the host – from his house? Smith had never hosted a variety show, and Westbrook Media had never done anything like it – not to mention during a pandemic, where the full production crew can't be on set, and those on location must follow strict safety protocols. But they take on the challenge, and in only a few weeks Snapchat offers a lucrative deal to launch the show as soon as possible. In the final episode of season 3, host Gabriela Cowperthwaite tells the story of the making of what became the hit Snapchat show: "Will From Home." A show developed in an entirely new way, where Will Smith's garage becomes the set and the people he interviews aren't with him but in their own homes and garages. Behind the scenes, it's the amazing work of a team of enterprising producers, writers, editors, and leaders who discovered during the making that many age-old industry practices need to be more inclusive and collaborative – even after the pandemic. Throughout the episode, Gabriela, a film director herself, shares her experiences of working in film production during this time and offers insights on teamwork lessons that are here to stay. Joseph B. Wallenstein invigorates and amplifies the legal interpretation of Miranda; he puts it in the context of a human story. Thus, with his insightful human dimension, Wallenstein's book makes it accessible to intelligent mainstream readers. In that fuller dimension, "Flynn and Miranda” illuminates the decision beyond the legal-ese explanation. "It is the telling of the last, great, true story of the 20th century," Wallenstein says. "When I interviewed Mr. Flynn, he said to me, ‘I have been asked about the cause a thousand times. You are the only one who ever asked me about the price I paid for my involvement.'" Wallenstein crystallizes the magnitude and breath of the decision: "Everyone has heard of the right but not one in a thousand, even lawyers, knows how those rights came to be or who paid the price to achieve them. Two men from opposite ends of the human social spectrum who came together in one blazing moment of legal history and how that moment changed their lives and the lives of all Americans. At its core, Flynn and Miranda is about fairness and how much that matters in America." Author Wallenstein was interested from the beginning -- the night Miranda was killed. The author has a track record in storytelling, having produced two highly-successful TV series, Knots Landing and 7th Heaven. He has also written two previous books about film production and safety in professional filming: Practical Filmmaking: A Handbook few the Real World and Nothing Dies for Film and currently serves as Director of Physical Production in the School of Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California. "Research only made me more determined to tell the story. To be frank, in the wake of Miranda, some patently guilty individuals did go free. The great effects of the decision forced police work into the scientific era and resulted in the creation of the Criminal Code, now in place in all fifty states," Wallenstein says.Megan Davis began her acting career in cowboy boots -- at age 3 for a grocery store commercial and now she's notching her acting spurs in a range of portrayals. Her latest performance in the TV movie The Christmas Family Reunion is projected as a 2021 holiday release. Written and directed by Jake Helgren, whose previous production Dashing in December, starred Andie MacDowell, the script contained a line that Davis was particularly excited about. "It was so funny and different. Anything that breaks the norm of the moment is always exciting," Davis notes. Davis' 2021 performance in The Christmas Family Reunion comes on the heels of a principal role in a TV pilot, For Nothing, a crime drama starring Michael Madsen and Daniel Baldwin. Indeed, Davis has been kicking up gold dust with an eclectic range of acting credits, including guest-starring roles in such series as American Horror Story, 2 Broke Girls, Bones, Young & Hungry. She has also performed in a number of independent films, portraying a diverse array of characters. Davis was nominated for a Best Actress Award by the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival for her portrayal of a prescription-pill addict in the short thriller Adverse Effects. She had roles in films such as The Wolves of Savin Hill and Animus as well as theatrical stage productions of FAMOUS, Elevator, Hay Fever, Dracula, and in the Edinburgh Theater Festival in The Day They Shot John Lennon. https://www.imdb.com/name/nm3182694/?ref_=fn_al_nm_1The Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors. Wallenstein crystallizes the magnitude and breath of the decision: "Everyone has heard of the right but not one in a thousand, even lawyers, knows how those rights came to be or who paid the price to achieve them. Cory Bennett Lewis is the Head of Physical Production at Bad Robot, J.J. Abrams’ production company. Nestled inside a beautiful glass box lovingly referred to as “Sugar Shack” (behind it’s quintessentially J.J. headquarters), Cory gives us the three key ingredients for her recipe for success. Ready? Deep breathing (generous portions) Visualization (to taste) Naps (as often as needed) Cory began her journey as a set PA. She was certain she’d walk the path of a DGA assistant director. Sometimes doors open and you just have to walk through them. And so when Tommy Harper, a 1st AD, took her under his wing, she walked in, closed the door, and has not looked back since. Together, they worked as freelancers for eight consecutive years on many projects under the Bad Robot banner. Some titles include Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens, Star Trek Into Darkness and The Cloverfield Paradox. You know, small indies that barely found success. :p Eventually, Bad Robot gave them the keys to the physical production kingdom by bringing them in house. Eventually, Tommy left and Cory has stayed put ever since. Cory and I met at a general, which is when people in our biz drink oodles of coffee or booze to “get to know each other.” They can be awkward and uncomfortable, especially if there isn’t a connection beyond the professional. Yet, Cory was so easy to talk to and has such a calm demeanor, that I became very curious about her. I am so grateful so let me poke her further and record it to share with you all! This week, Cory dives deep into the transition from being a freelancer to going in house at Bad Robot. She talks about the two films she made that had the biggest impact on her life. We also discuss what FORCE AWAKENS taught her about her marriage, being a woman in the sci-fi space, and the importance of tact. As Bad Robot enters a new chapter via an exclusive deal with WarnerMedia reportedly worth $250 million, I’m excited to see what magic they will continue to create. Beijos, Caca

Mathew Ferrante is the VP of Physical Production at Paramount Pictures. Listening and editing this week’s episode felt a bit like uncovering a time capsule. At the time of this recording way back in January of 2019, Mathew (yes, with one T because he’s cool like that) had been at Paramount for 5 years. So, it’s wild to think in a few short months he will have been there for 6 years. The bullet train that is time… Originally from Arlington Heights, IL, just outside Chicago, Mathew got his start as a PA on one of my favorite indie films, WAITRESS, starring Keri Russell and Andy Griffith. Eventually, he found his way to the Physical Production Management Trainee Program at Warner Bros. where he quickly grew into a staff coordinator for the president of physical production. Currently, Matt oversees titles ranging from $5 million to $20 million dollars. His most recent credits include OVERLOAD and THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX with JJ Abrams’s Bad Robot, Johnny Knoxville’s ACTION POINT. Our chat gets a bit inside baseball at times as he explains titles within the studio and deconstructs the importance of tax incentives. We also tackle the challenges of being an executive and making it home in time to put his daughters to bed. So, in this hour together, you’ll get a taste of a day in the life of a studio executive and a peek behind the curtain from someone who has been at Warner Bros. and Paramount Pictures. You’ll learn: How the Physical Production department works alongside with the Creative department to greenlight a movie How being at a studio allowed him to be a family man How Keri Russell encouraged him to keep going His time at Harvard and being a part of Hasty Pudding Can’t wait to hear your thoughts on this week’s episode! You may not have heard of Donna Smith — but she’s one of the most important players behind the scenes in Hollywood. Over the course of almost 40 years, she’s been instrumental in the production of 157 movies, including Raging Bull, The Terminator, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, Schindler’s List and The Matrix. She’s also the first woman to serve as President of Physical Production and Post Production at Universal Pictures. Despite her enviable career and powerful position, Donna is down-to-earth and affable in this podcast. She offers invaluable advice for anyone looking to get ahead in the film industry, including who you should get to know, the importance of the “business” in show business, and getting started in the seven-year process from script to screen. This is a must-listen for movie fans, and Donna’s tales of working with Marty (Scorsese), Bobby (DeNiro) and Sly (Stallone) are every bit as inspirational as the films she’s helped bring to the silver screen.
