Von and Jackie discuss the BDSM and kink scene, as well as Jackie's one-woman musical, Hold Me Down. They talk about how to get involved in the scene, including attending classes and munches (casual hangouts). They also clarify the definitions of BDSM, kinks, and fetishes. Jackie explains that BDSM is about power dynamics and can involve pain and pleasure, while kinks are personal preferences that turn someone on. They also touch on the misconceptions surrounding BDSM, such as the portrayal in 50 Shades of Grey. They discuss the importance of communication, negotiation, and consent in BDSM, as well as the use of safe words. They also explore different aspects of BDSM, including role-playing, rope bondage (Shibari), and the variety of outfits and costumes in the scene. Jackie shares their experiences in the BDSM and kink scene, including the attire, etiquette, and purpose of dungeons. They explain that dungeons are community spaces where people can engage in BDSM play in a safe and consensual environment. Jackie also discusses their journey of finding freedom through bondage and overcoming shame and trauma. Being a part of community isn't required to practice BDSM, although it may seem like it due to visibility. What is important is knowing the positive and negative ways community influences the kink subculture. Yes, mainstream myths and stereotypes contribute to BDSM stigma, however, misleading info from the community causes harm too. On ep 188 of American Sex, Sunny Megatron & Kate Loree discuss this plus give advice on verifying the validity of educational info, sniffing out gatekeeping and “one twue wayisms,” doing effective gut checks in consent situations, and more. Sunny also discusses the far-reaching implications of overturning Roe vs. Wade & how the Earn It Act ties in.  Guest Bio – Sunny Megatron (Kink-Specific Bio) Sunny began teaching about BDSM in 2010. Her area of expertise is soft skills--which center around things like ethics, cultivating self-awareness, and strategies for effective communication. She received a FROST Certificate of Gratitude in 2020 honoring her service to the kink community, was voted XBIZ Sexpert of the year in 2021, Kinkly's sex blogging superhero in 2017, plus her alternative sexuality focused podcast American Sex won the AASECT podcast award in 2020. Sunny also creates curriculum & teaches about BDSM for sexuality educators, therapists, and care professionals including professional certification courses like the Sexual Health Alliance's Kink Informed Certification Program. 2021's XBIZ Sexpert of the year and kink superhero, Sunny Megatron, is on a mission to disrupt the BDSM world. It's high time to shake up norms and bring the kink community next level with up-to-date standards around consent, ethics, and self-awareness while considering how inclusivity, misogyny, education, attitudes, racism and all the isms impact the whole kit and kaboodle. In this episode, we continue our kinky discussion from episode twenty-two as Sunny tells us more about why her book, “Customizable Kink: A Strategic Guide to Erotic Play” is so necessary. She explains how the patriarchal feedback loop has impacted both the kink community and the media's portrayal of kink to the masses. All the while, she stresses that she is not dissing traditionalists, but simply stating, “Don't force it on others.” When Sunny coined the key concept “kink is customizable”, she shed a light on just how much creativity and flexibility is possible with kink. The possibilities are limitless as long as you remember consent. And on that note, Sunny goes on to tell us about her educational acronym, the consent PASSM which undoubtably will make an amazing t-shirt. So, I hope you join us for this important and fascinating episode of Open Deeply. Side note: If you would like to vote for Sunny as XBIZ's sexpert for 2022, the link is below. Your support matters and helps sex educators, such as Sunny, who are so often suppressed by social media, make a living. So, thank you for your support! Her area of expertise is the soft skills--which center around things like ethics, cultivating self-awareness, and strategies for effective communication. She received a FROST Certificate of Gratitude in 2020 honoring her service to the kink community, was voted XBIZ sexpert of the year in 2021, and Kinkly's sex blogging superhero in 2017. Her alternative sexuality focused podcast American Sex was awarded the AASECT podcast award in 2020. Sunny also creates curriculum about BDSM for sexuality professionals. Some of her most recent projects include designing & teaching the BDSM unit for a well-known sex educator certification program plus a lesson for the Sexual Health Alliance's Kink Informed Certification Program for therapists and other care professionals. Sunny's first book, Customizable Kink: A Strategic Guide to Erotic Play is scheduled to be released in 2022. The Twenty Seventh episode of Kink Kloset calls for leather and protocol, and will settle for nothing less! Please welcome to the Kink Kloset someone whom I admire greatly in the kink community, Kevan Walsh. Kevan is a Melbourne based kinkster who has joined the community later in his life. After Kevan first came out, it took him a while to find his tribe. Through some exposure in pubs, and doing some online research, he was able to dip his toe into the Melbourne kink community. The sense of purpose, structure, and tradition, resonated with Kevan and he knew he had had found his tribe. Kevan was titled Laird Leatherman 2018, and has been very active within the kink community. All of his work within the kink community has highlighted how great of an impact we can have on each other's lives, and what can be achieved through hard work.Kevan's main journey through kink was driven through a D/s relationship with his Sir. His Sir was able to guide him on which resources to use to help grow his kink knowledge. In recent years, he has since developed a strong D/s relationship with his boy, to which he is now embodying the mentoring role. When talking about his views on how people live out their kinks, he adopts a mindset of "You do it your way, and I'll do it my way" and is very accepting on how we all have different and unique kink journeys. This open minded mindset is helping Kevan learn and develop his relationships within the community as he is able to understand the perspectives of many different kinksters.

Using my story of the white rope artist who tokenized a woman of color in a photoshoot, we discuss the many nuances of being one of the few black women in a BDSM space. From race play fetishism to the obvious preference of many dominants, we discuss how the whiteness of these spaces can be painfully alienating to black women attempting to participate in BDSM.Support the show

Sadomasochism and the BDSM Community in the United States: Kinky People Unite (Routledge, 2021) chronicles the development of sadomasochistic sexuality and its communities in the United States from the post-war period to the present day. Having evolved from scattered networks of sadomasochists to a coherent body bound by shared principles of "safe, sane, consensual," activists worked to transform popular perceptions of their community, end its routine harassment by law enforcement, and win inclusion in US American society. Often paralleling the work of LGBTQ+ activists, people who engaged in BDSM (Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism) transformed both their own sexual practices and how outsiders perceived them. The development of this community highlights the interactions of people of different sexual orientations within a sexual community, the influence of various campaigns for sexual freedom, and the BDSM community's influence on popular perceptions of sexuality and sexual freedom. The text's historical perspective gives depth and texture to a specific dimension of the history of sexuality in the United States. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the history of sexuality. Its clear and direct approach offers an important and useful chronology of a movement that has long been neglected by historians. Dr. Stephen K. Stein is the Associate Chair of the Department of History at the University of Memphis. His recent publications include From Torpedoes to Aviation: Washington Irving Chambers and Technological Innovation in the New Navy, 1877-1913 (2007); The Sea in World History: Trade, Travel, and Exploration (2017); Twenty-Five Years of Living in Leather: The National Leather Association, 1986-2011 (2012); “The Greely Relief Expedition and the New Navy,” International Journal of Naval History 5 (December 2006), which won the Rear Admiral Ernest M. Eller Prize in Naval History; and "Lessons Learned Building the Online History Program at the University of Memphis," History Teacher 47 (May 2014). The development of this community highlights the interactions of people of different sexual orientations within a sexual community, the influence of various campaigns for sexual freedom, and the BDSM community's influence on popular perceptions of sexuality and sexual freedom. The text’s historical perspective gives depth and texture to a specific dimension of the history of sexuality in the United States. This book will be of interest to students and scholars in the history of sexuality. Its clear and direct approach offers an important and useful chronology of a movement that has long been neglected by historians. Dr. Stephen K. For Jason, it was a struggle to connect to his kinks being in such a remote community. He also found it challenging to be comfortable with his kink self when his mates ridiculed kinksters because it wasn't the status quo. We then discuss on how great it is during these times to be able to connect to so many communities, where Jason reflects on the great success of Melbourne Rubber.

Like I said earlier we are relatively new to being out in the community and have been welcomed into to the three local private dungeons in our area. One about 20 minutes from our home the others over an hour away in separate directions. We have a very small core group of people and they all basically take turns hosting events and play parties. The problem we are running into is that about 85% of the people are poly (which we are completely fine with it’s just not for us) and they all play amongst themselves and Master and I only play with each other. We both have explained nicely on multiple occasions that we don’t play with others and are strictly monogamous and a little bit about why. However, they aren’t really accepting that. It also states the same thing on both of our Fetlife profiles. I’ve even had individuals make comments at a vanilla baby shower hosted at one dungeon about giving it time and they’d change my song and I’d join their poly group. So the question is beyond driving 2 hours to a large city which is prohibitive due to children, cost and restrictions due to opposite days off work what does a couple do? The only options we can come up with are: distance ourselves from the local community and only play at home again, drive to a larger city if and when we can schedule it, or continue to put up with the comments/reiterate our stand at every event. Please don’t get me wrong these are very nice individuals and have been happy to accept us into the fold. We just don’t know how to handle the constant inquiries without being downright rude and/or being rejected by the group. Thank you for taking the time to read my email, having such a wonderful show and being such a driving force of safety and understanding in the community.[4:23] Kuldrin:You stated these are good people so it sounds as though they are being playful but also serious in their attempt to change your marriage and dynamic. If it were me, because I tend to be very direct and outgoing, I would pick a munch or gathering where most or all would be and stand together with my sub, get everyone's attention, and then say something like..."Good evening everyone! First, my sub Mayfair and I would like to thank you all for being so welcoming as we have ventured out from the bedroom and into this wonderful local community. She and I never expected to make such wonderful friends and have such great experiences and We thank you all for that. From toys to types of play...it makes us excited to continue this journey together. Speaking of, there is one thing that is making us uncomfortable. We respect everyone's dynamic and seeing all the different ways people are together and play. However, there seems to be a lot of pressure and comments that we should try poly...and that just is not our dynamic. Also, by us stating we are not poly and some continuing to push, we feel as though our hard limits are being pushed without either of us consenting to it. We respect that way of doing things but we don't feel the respect in return...like we are judged for such a "vanilla" marriage dynamic like monogamy. Please understand, we know that no one has done this to make us uncomfortable but we do feel strongly that if people continue to disrespect our marriage by trying to convince us to convert to a poly lifestyle we will have to take our fun back behind the comfort and security of our own closed doors."I would say it with the nicest, yet most sincere and stern tone possible as to offer respect but command authority.[6:36] Krypter:I am sorry to hear that you’ve dealt with a similar issue recently and I hope whatever you did has helped the situation. I think doing an episode on this type of thing would be an excellent idea and I’m sure it would help quite a few people. I imagine it would work for most any situation that people are pushing their agendas on others. Situations like the poly issue, problems with someone pushing you to try a kink because they love it (that’s been an issue also, unfortunately), swinging and I’m sure countless others that I’m not even aware are options. I loved your speech and definitely heard your voice in my head while reading it and can’t wait to hear what else you have to say on the episode if it come I to existence. And if we can do anything to help you with the podcast let my master or I know.[7:27] Kuldrin:Really, when you think about it, it comes down to communication...as it almost always does. If they are joking but serious they may not realize that what they are saying is pushy, rude, inappropriate, judgy, etc. Also, they are like most people who think about consent on the terms of physical actions like sex or the use of impact toys. Even when consent is thought about when it comes to words most people just think about humiliation, degradation, and honorifics when in fact it's also being pushy, being intrusive, being obtuse, ... most people, myself included, are guilty of doing this but when it was brought to my attention...welp...you just can't unlearn things once they're stuck in the noodle.[8:15] I’m curious about the experience of others that have dealt with this, how you handled it and the outcome. Email me your stories and be sure to include if I can share them.[8:31] A brief recap. “If you don’t have anything nice to say, keep your mouth shut.”[9:29] Another thing I feel I need to talk to you about is something that happened at a party. A brand new couple came into the middle of a conversation and immediately left because of what they heard. There were a few interracial couples and few singles scattered about in a living room having a rather comical conversation about their lives and the weird things that happen in all relationships, gay, straight, interracial or other and the couple that entered late into the chat packed up and bailed on the party. Later they texted the person that had sponsored them to be there stating that they felt someone of a minority heritage was being made fun of and referenced two people that were doing it. The party host was very concerned about this type of behavior in their house and immediately sought out that truth of the situation. The truth was far from the couple that had left’s perception. The two interracial couples were actually leading the conversation, everyone involved was very close friends, and the main comment made in question was actually said by a very sweet slightly older lady that was quoting a comedian. Oh, and a tattoo that was said to be an S.S. tattoo was a pagan symbol.[11:21] So what is my point? [16:47] So, in wrapping up this topic... Paul YoungOn this episode of the Krypt we are going to talk about navigating the online world of BDSM but first, I have to welcome my amazing co-host, Funsize. This week we’re discussing how to navigate some of the more prominent lifestyle websites out there. This is a listener requested episode, all the way from Germany (?) I believe. Now because there are so many websites out there we’ve chosen to expand on those that have lasted the test of time, bring something unique to our community, or have the largest base of users. So while we are talking about these websites, remember this is by far not every website and quite frankly not even one tenth of what is out there. HistoryBefore we dive into what each of these websites are, what they offer, and how to best make use of them, we would like to touch just shortly on the history of the online community. So 1990 the internet as we know it is created, then in 1991 the word “BDSM” first appeared on a usenet group. Soon after alt.sex.bondage, a group on usenet, found the community expanding further into the online world. A decade later bdsmlibrary.org was founded, and Fetlife popped up seven years after. Today there hundreds more active websites for our community. Some are social networks, some dating apps, some pornographic sites, others are shops which cater to the implements, dress codes, and novelties associated with BDSM culture. The internet opened the lines of communication, for knowledge, connection, and experience in ways that our community simply didn’t have up until that point. Now we’re going to go one site at a time and give you ideas of how best to utilize these resources. Fetlife- starting with the most popular and well known social site is fairly obvious. Created by John Baku Fetlife is essentially the Facebook of the fetish community. There is a feed from people you know, and groups you follow just like on Facebook. However, it’s not pictures of your friend from fourth grade’s puppy (or at least not that kind of puppy)…. It’s going to be posts on things within the lifestyle. That’s not to say that there aren’t vanilla things happening on Fetlife, there are of course, but the majority is all about the kink. Kuldrin and I are both on Fetlife, so are our spouses. Along with us there are another 6,230,112 members to date. (https://fetlife.com) There are over 100,000 active groups discussing every possible subject you could think of at any given time. To be a member on Fetlife you must be 18 years of age. Within these 6,000,000 plus users there are people from all walks of life. You can definitely get a broad scope of what we mean when we talk about your kink is okay, by looking at the lists of fetishes alone on Fetlife, and understanding that for each one, there are probably at least 1,000 users who can relate to it at any time. Groups are just as diverse as the individual users. We of course have our group Kuldrin’s Krypt, where you can join or start a conversation. There are groups for fetishes, groups for local communities, there are groups for fans of certain book series. I myself am part of groups that offer tutorials, or just give advice. There is so much out there where you can meet people with similar interests and so many learn opportunities. Let’s get into what is featured on this particular website. Fetlife provides member profiles, again similar to Facebook in this aspect. Fetish lists allowing members to list their likes, quickly and easily. Members are listed by location, along with events. Several members also post their writings, pictures, and videos. Clearly Fetlife has tons to offer and for newbies especially it can get a bit overwhelming. So what are some things that can make meeting the people you want to meet easier? A good profile goes a long towards this end. On your profile you should of course list the basics, location (though many list Antarctica,) age (again many will put in 90+ years of age to hide their identities.) You can also list relationship status (including vanilla relationships, ie marriage,) D/s relationships, orientation, activity level within the community, and what you are looking for. After that there’s your About Me section. You can make this is as detailed or basic as you like, however as a tip those who have detailed profiles do better. Now this is not to say that you need to write a book or anything in this section, but typically two to three paragraphs helps. I know Kuldrin actually wrote the about section on his wife, Lady Katherine’s profile page and it is brilliant. I think I smiled the entire time I was reading it actually. You can also add your fetishes to help other members with similar interests as you in being able to find, and thereby meet you. This is important because you can search members based on fetishes alone. Finally you can add any writings you want to share; poetry, articles, and journals; pictures, and videos. I will note that videos are only watchable by paid supporters of Fetlife. Also and this is something that I know seems very sexist in a way, but a lot of female members are starting to auto-vet men who use photos of their genitals as profile pics. It’s highly unattractive to start with, and honestly it signals to women that you’re only looking for sex. It’s fine to want sex, or even just be looking for a play partner but really there’s nothing less appealing than this. So I would really recommend against this. Especially as the auto-vetting is becoming more and more popular. I also have to recommend against showing your face in pictures, or anything that signifies where you work or live. Even on sites like Fetlife you can end up unintentionally outing yourself in this way. Not only that but showing this much of yourself can potentially put you in danger from predators. Talking to other members can be done through either group posts, or direct messaging. And this is where a lot of people find hang ups and snags, because what do you say to a stranger in order to form a connection? A lot of people have trouble here because they just don’t know what to say to get or keep a conversation going, or weed out person’s they’re not interested in, or they end up portraying themselves in a certain way they may not have intended. Kuldrin and I actually started talking after I shot him a message about the podcast on Fetlife. What I said was: Hello, I recently listened to a few of your podcasts. You seem to have a lot to offer to the community at large. I'd love to hear more of what you have to say about the lifestyle. Perhaps we could have a few discussions even? Please feel free to contact me.Do- Say hello, be friendly but not too familiar. Don’t- Use common vernacular and assume that everyone will understand what you mean regardless of their age or region. Example: Yo bro, sup?... Said to a 60 something year old member of the Old Guard just won’t fly. Do- Read the person’s profile. This will hopefully give you an idea of who you’re talking to. Don’t- Assume you know everything about a person just by what the profile says, you should be asking questions based off what the profile does say. Do- Leave an opening for further conversation to follow. Don’t- Insist on the conversation taking place, or try to push it towards a certain direction or aim. Do- Be honest about what you want. Don’t- Think that just because someone is willing to message with you that this means you can skip the vetting process. Vetting is still extremely vital for online interactions. Alright now that we’ve explored a lot of what Fetlife has to offer let’s jump to the next site on our list. One of the longest lived sites out there, bdsmlibrary.org. (http://www.bdsmlibrary.com/forums/) Bdsm library is often thought of a site solely for stories written about the lifestyle. This however isn’t true. There is a huge library available there, with stories that are definitely worth the read. However the library also hosts an extensive forum section, where members can contribute to a plethora of subjects in the lifestyle. And of course there is the chat room, which holds a large enough collection of regular members to keep the conversation going after so many years. Just as with Fetlife you can find members from all walks of life. Everyone must be 18 years of age or older and create a profile to join. The site hosts members from all over the world. The best way to use this site is by creating a profile, just as with Fetlife. After you’ve got your profile set up, read through the forums, there are some great topics there. And finally jump into the chat room when you’re ready. The Cage is another huge forum site. (https://thecage.co/) For the moment it is a free site, but they are quickly becoming a paid, by invite only website. This is a very serious place for those who want to learn and share with others. The Cage has only been around for a couple of years but the member base they host is one of quality. For complete show notes go to https://kuldrinskrypt.com/132

A new podcast! First of all, I was not playing with my nipple while we were recording, all right? Let the record show. The bomb shelter we’re doing these things in is freezing cold, so I was actually wearing a leather jacket. A motorcycle-style jacket, so that’s two layers of leather over my chest. You could not have found my nipple with a sonogram. That’s just Monk being silly. Our first question is a letter from someone who asks what to do when you’re caught in a sexy, kinky situation and you want to do bondage, but you have no rope? Monk and I free associate about improvised bondage equipment. (We did not use the microphone cables for bondage though. The sound guys frown on that.) Then a BDSM newcomer asks: explain to me why I should get involved with the BDSM community? The short answer is: they’ll teach you things you might not otherwise know, and they’ll be support for you when things are tough. Lastly, a sex worker asks a question about emotional relationships with clients. It’s a nuanced issue, and it underlines the fact one really cannot generalize about how sex workers feel about what they do. All the experiences are equally valid, but we’re different. I get sort of uncharacteristically woo-woo about my feeeeeeeeelings in this one, but the take-away quote is: “If you hate your clients, you’ll hate yourself.”
