Jim Putman on The Disciple Dilemma:Much of western discipleship has migrated into learning facts, doing activities, and checking off membership in a church. Is that all there is to discipleship? Is it possible we have our priorities backward from the way we do church, to the way we train our pastors and seminaries? Who might be qualified to talk to those kinds of questions? If you wanted the ideal resume to talk about what it means to be a disciple, a disciple maker, a pastor, author of over a dozen books - a dozen books! and somebody who is recognized around the world as a disciple maker personally? Well, you'd be describing Jim Putman. Along with all that, Jim Putman is a trophied wrestler, a wrestling coach, a husband, parent, and the founding pastor of Real Life Ministries in Post Falls, ID.This episode with Jim Putman is offered humbly to pastors and leaders in churches everywhere. In this in-depth discussion, Matt Dabbs interviews Brandon Guindon from Real Life Ministries in Texas. They dive into the principles of creating a disciple-making culture within the church body. Brandon shares his journey in ministry and how a focus on disciple-making, modeled by Jesus' example, transformed his approach and shaped the culture at Real Life Ministries. He provides insights into how he has successfully nurtured this in his own congregation and has imparted this approach to others, enabling them to raise more disciples. He emphasizes the importance of keeping the message simple, genuine discipleship as a lifestyle, and striving to make 'disciple-makers' rather than just 'disciples'. We have to have a personal, relationship-based approach to spreading the Gospel, echoing Jesus' methods, rather than relying on extensive theological knowledge or complex teachings. Some really important and pressing questions have arisen as people now want to move closer to God. One of these questions being: Can people lose their salvation once they give themselves to the Lord Jesus. Jim Putman, Senior Pastor of Real Life Ministries, joins me to help answer this question. I also have received a large number of emails asking me “Do I have to leave my home in the ‘separate countries'?” Jim also helps answer this question. Jim and I share a long and insightful discussion as we dive into these topics. What does God's Word say? 1 Peter 3:13-17 13 Who is going to harm you if you are eager to do good? 14 But even if you should suffer for what is right, you are blessed. “Do not fear their threats; do not be frightened.” 15 But in your hearts revere Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 17 For it is better, if it is God's will, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.Ephesians 6:10-18 The Armor of God10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord's people.4Patriots https://4Patriots.com/Todd See this week's discounts and deals before they are gone and get free shipping on orders over $97. 4Patriots.com/Todd Alan's Soaps https://alanssoaps.com/TODD Use coupon code ‘TODD' to save an additional 10% off the bundle price. Satan is real. He hates you. He is active and we have won! - Pastor Jim Putman joins. You are going to hear Pastor Jim Putman, Senior Pastor of Real Life Ministries, author and my friend tell a story about helping some girls who got drawn into a satanic cult in Idaho. The entire event is chilling but a detail in Jim's account floored me. According to a counselor who brought Jim into a session where he was working with one of the girls, the satanic cult taught kids how to molest other kids using anatomically correct dolls. As Jim talked through this, I couldn't help but remember when the Satanic Temple in the separate country of Washington State celebrated the passage of what they called “their ‘sex-ed' Bill” into law. They poured blood and oil on the steps of the Capital. The “sex-ed” curriculum teaches little kids how to use sex toys on each other and far more. I think you will also be chilled. Jim also answers questions from the Podcast Family, including why Satan is sometimes called the ‘god' of this earth, where Jim thinks one can lose their salvation and if the Bible contradicts itself in regard to people marrying and having kids. What does God's Word say? John 15:4 4 Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.Matthew 24:4-84 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you. 5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,' and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. 7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains. The Bible on marriage and kidsEpisode 985 Links:Books by Jim PutmanThriving in Babylon4Patriots https://4patriots.com Protect your family with Food kits, solar generators and more at 4Patriots. Are we in the End Times? Will there be an American revival? What about women pastoring churches? Ask Pastor Jim PutmanThe Podcast Family had a lot of questions for my friend and Pastor, Jim Putuman, Senior Pastor of Real Life Ministries. Understandably, many of the questions were about the End Times. “There are a lot of things happening that do make me believe we are [living in the end times]”, Jim began, and then went into detail about what he observes, especially in America. But, he also reminded us it's not all bad news: record numbers of people are coming to Jesus in Communist China! Even the CCP cannot stop The Truth. There is an organized effort led by influential leaders like Pastor Rick Warren to force evangelical groups like the Southern Baptist convention to allow women to be pastors and to lead churches. “I think you would be stupid as a church leader to make decisions that affect women and children without having women as wise counsel.”, Jim said; he also quoted exactly what the Bible explains about women leading churches. While men and women are equal in the eyes of God, they are also different and uniquely gifted and Jim Putman discussed what churches risk when they stray from God's directives for respecting His plan for family and society. Importantly, Jim also talked about what kind of leaders men must be to align with God's plan and it starts with remembering we report to one ultimate leader, Jesus Christ and we must follow His leadership method best defined as a sacrificial, others-centered, service leader role. What does God's Word say? Can Christians work at companies like Target? We premier our Ask Pastor Putman feature, plus emails challenging your shy, unassuming hostToday we premier a feature to allow you to ask anything you like of Jim Putman, Senior Pastor of Real Life Ministries. It's good timing. Jim answers questions about whether Christians can remain employed at companies like Target; what to do if your pastor begins bowing to the pressure of society to mute God's Word and if we, as Christians, should be fully apart from the world building our own society. We also discuss how the Bible defines friendship and how the world has changed that meaning. It's also email day for the show from Podcast family members challenging me with critiques of recent shows. THE THESIS: Christians must operate in faith and grace. We must be able to explain to non-Christians the source of our joy. Easter is the perfect season to do that. But, how do we tell the story? In what ways can we share the faith with church-curious non-believers? THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Matthew 26Through the work of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Jim Putman and his team grew Real Life Ministries from 11 people meeting in a basement to an 8,000 member biblical ministry. They teach churches and pastors around the world how to make disciples. It's been an amazing year and we wanted to spend the last podcast talking about all God has done and spoken through this podcast in 2022. As we wrap up season 4 of the podcast, we wanted to reminisce on a few key things we've said this year (or that guests have said). Then we broke down the word FIGHT and here are the words we highlighted: F is for FAITH I is for INSPIRE G is for GIVE H is for HUGS T is for TEACH After we unpacked the word FIGHT, we brought in fight experts. People who are fighting for family and people we can learn from. Here are a few highlights from these episodes: In Episode 158, Julie Pierce joined us to talk about how LEADERSHIP IS WORTH THE FIGHT. “Every situation is a leadership situation. Every life lesson is a leadership lesson.” - Julie Pierce Ep. 161: Commit to Fight for Family (Don and Suz) We talk about vision, culture, and how to change your family from the inside out "I looked at the fight for family and I decided... I am not going to lose this fight." - Don Ep. 162: Fight for Energy The truth is, the kids do have more energy! "The reason kids have so much more energy is because they are carefree and have the freedom to play all day!" - Suz The heart of the FIGHT series culminated with Colleen Stickl joining us for Episode 163: Step into the Spiritual Fight. In a lot of ways, this is the main theme we hoped parents gained from this series. "Ephesians 6:12 says, Our fight is not against flesh in blood (or toddlers and teenagers), it is against the rulers, the authorities, the powers of this dark world... The biggest battle is not what we can see with our eyes but against satan and his forces." - Colleen As parents, we see the battle for our kid's hearts. The more we are equipped to fight the less the enemy can do! Our kids are warriors and their salvation is at stake. If they have salvation, then he goes after their hearts. If their hearts are secure, he goes after their everyday peace and joy. We are called to fight for our kids and help them fight against darkness! Ep. 164: Tim Hawkins – Being a Funny Family Talking about authenticity and how to be a joyful culture but not at the expense of identity and encouragement. Tim talks about how joking was a way to bond but sometimes pushed the boundaries of kindness... he has learned as a father how powerful his words are and how to use them for building up, not tearing down. Ep.165: Julie Parido - Parents who Fight for Truth She shared her book “Draw the Scriptures” and how to fight to keep the Word of God in our families. Ep. 166: Christy Gandy – Fight for Generosity She shared her company “Love Well Co.” and talked about how she builds her family's culture by prioritizing generosity over everything else. Ep. 167: Anne Evans – Fighting for Marriage Anne shared her ministry, Real Life Ministries and how her marriage was marked by unity and building their marriage daily. “What starts with you and God will overflow into your family and marriage relationship.” - Anne The overall message of the FIGHT series is, IT'S WORTH IT! And the way we fight is often different than we think... Fight for family takes a different role when we do it with God and FIGHT His way. Summer Series: Who Knows Your Kids Best We interviewed each of our kids this summer and our hope was that as you got to know them, it would help you know your kids better! We heard so many people LOVE the series and gain insight into themselves and their unique children. It was a whole summer learning about our kid's world and how they saw their upbringing. Fall Series: Parent to God There were so many guests who came on to share their perspective of parenting, marriage, and more. We unpack how your relationship with God directly affects all the other relationships in your life. #179: Pursuing God is Essential to Parenting #180: Fatherhood, Football, and a Family Crisis (Feat. Chad Hennings) #181: Pursuing God is a Delight #182: A Father's Pursuit of God (Feat. Dan Luigs) #183: Teach Your Child to Hear God! #184: Pursue God + Pursue Unity in Marriage (feat. Kim Kimberling) #185: Q&A About Parenting + Hearing God #186: Need a Fatherhood Refresh? (Feat. Larry Hagner) #187: Talk to Yourself the Way God Talks to You (Feat. John Stange) #188: Wrapping Up the Pursue God Series Final 4 episodes of the season: Ep. 189-190: AVOID the HOILIDAZE – real talk about the holidays and how we can have vision, declarations, and hope for the season. Great to listen to if you haven't yet and there is a challenge at the end of the series, we think every family should do this week! A disciple-making culture has to have a Biblical understanding of Love at its foundation. This broadcast features two of the best speakers on this issue in the nation, Brandon Guindon and our own PJ Dunn. Brandon has led churches worldwide to become healthy and effective in making disciples of Jesus Christ. He was ordained at Real Life Ministries in Post Falls, ID and planted Real Life Ministries Texas in 2016. He has authored and co-authored several publications on biblical discipleship, including Disciple-Making Culture, Stay the Course, and the Real Life Discipleship Training Manual. In this broadcast, the team talks about: • Scott shares at the end the most significant lesson he has ever learned as a disciple and dad • We find out Brandon is an avid bowhunter and PJ played the sousaphone in High School! • PJ starts the discussion by recapping Brandon's book, Disciple Making Culture • Brandon shares why love is the core of all disciple-making efforts • Look at why it is so hard to love God and love others • How the GA Baptist Disciple team used Brandon's book as an equipping tool • Scott's new Parti Yorkie shows him a core discipleship principle • Unpack "A loving culture does not require us to solve everyone's problems." • We listen to people with the intent to respond but we need to listen to understand them. • 3 thoughts on "Strategy won't make a lasting impact if disciple-making is not who we are" • Ask yourself the tricky question, "Am I living out the Great Commission?". • "Creating a disciple-making culture requires careful pruning" How do pastors and disciple-makers do that? • How can disciple-makers stay the course in disciple-making? • Understand, "what is the win?" that helps you understand what you are pruning. • PJ pointed out that we have to measure to scripture and not programs. • Brandon and PJ advise leaders on where to start to make this shift to Great Commission disciples

THE THESIS: Christians must operate in faith and grace. We must be able to explain to non-Christians the source of our joy. Easter is the perfect season to do that. But, how do we tell the story? In what ways can we share the faith with church-curious non-believers? THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: Matthew 26 Through the work of the Holy Spirit, Pastor Jim Putman and his team grew Real Life Ministries from 11 people meeting in a basement to an 8,000 member biblical ministry. They teach churches and pastors around the world how to make disciples. The Lord can equip anyone to be saved and to serve him. Drunks. Murderers. Tax Collectors. Rodeo-Clown Radio Hosts. How will the Lord equip you? How much will you let him change you? In this Pilot Episode of Meet Me In Damascus, we talk with one of the Nation's leading pastors, Jim Putman of Real Life Ministries in Post Falls, Idaho. Jim tells us about his Damascus moment that took him from a young alcoholic given “abusing [his] parents” to an author and disciple-making pastoral leader of nearly ten thousand Christians. You will hear how God took away from Jim, a three-time All-American wrestler, his shot at the Olympics and how a bitter and disappointed young man initially refused the Lord's call to service. So . . . how did God change his heart? And are Jim's struggles over? What does he say to people who think they are too broken for the Lord to use, let alone to love? Books By Jim Putnam About the Title of The Series The Lord Jesus called a man who had lead the persecution and murder of Christians to become the Apostle Paul. It was on the Road to Demascus where Jesus appeared to the man then named Saul of Tarsus. The Lord asked Saul why he was persecuting him. “Who are you, Lord?” asked Saul. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting”, said our Lord. Saul was blinded and became entirely dependent on help from others. The once mighty “Pharisee of Pharisees” had to wait three days until the Lord called upon a Christian to go restore his sight and baptize him. After his conversion and at least three years of being discipled, Saul--now The Apostle Paul--became one of the most important of all the Apostles. About The Music "Do You Love Me?" is written and performed by my beloved brother, Matthew Bruno, the man who led me to the Lord Jesus by his example of selfless love. The chapel theme for the 2021-2022 year is "upRoar". The Greek word that is translated as “uproar” isἐκταράσσω (ektarassō),: to agitate, to disturb wholly, to exceedingly trouble. Although an uproar is “seen,” it is preceded with a subversive force. The church operates in a similar way, being subversive to the rhythm of the culture it exists within. It is the perpetuation of this subversive force that causes and creates an uproar that is seen and felt. It is our goal this year to explore ways for us to participate in the subversive kingdom force that will create an uproar in the culture God calls us to. About the Speaker: Justin Jordan is a 2008 Boise Bible Alum. He received his B.S. in Christian Ministries. He, his wife, and 3 kids live in Boise, where he is the co-founding Pastor at Real Life Ministries. Listen to messages at Boise Bible College at www.boisebible.edu/messagesatbbc. Real Life Ministries is one church with 3, soon to be 4, locations. In this episode of the podcast, Senior Pastor Jim Putman and Communications Director Lance Wigton talk about the philosophy that led them away from a mega-church model towards a multi-campus site. They also announce the site of their next campus - due to launch in September of 2021!
On this podcast Jim Putman, Senior Pastor at Real Life Ministries and Lance Wigton, Communication Director at Real Life Ministries, answer an often asked question - "Why would a church do an egg hunt for Easter?" They talk about the fact that even though we know Bunnies and eggs have nothing to do with celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we are always looking for ways to go outside of our walls and reach the world for Jesus one person at a time. They explain the philosophy behind what we call a 'Bridge' event - and why it can cause people to take a step into a relational environment and bring them a step closer to a relationship with God and His Church. Jim Putman and Lance Wigton are back to answer some more frequently asked questions about Real Life Ministries. This week they are discussing why Real Life doesn't have a separate Youth Service during our Sunday morning church service.
Sometimes people who visit Real Life Ministries walk away with the comment - "I think this church is too big". Communications Director Lance Wigton and Senior Pastor Jim Putman address this topic and talk about what the church actually is and what the Bible says it should look like. Spiritual Maturity is the destination of the road we travel as disciples of Jesus, and a person growing in spiritual maturity needs to develop the ability to control his emotions. Jesus' method of Relational Discipleship is hinged on our ability to make and maintain relationships. When we allow ourselves to be controlled and steered by our emotions, it is inviting opportunities for our relationships to be strained and offences to build. Real Life Ministries is currently in a sermon series titled "You're Not The Boss Of Me - Learning to say no to the emotions that control you." I kicked it off with the first sermon - Undercover Boss - last weekend. I never seem to have the time to unwrap all the things I want to say during the time allotted for the sermon. Because this is such an important topic, I decided to dig into it deeper on our Real Life Discipleship Podcast. Let me know what you think! Redefined: DiscipleMt 28:19; Lk 6:40, Mt 4:19-20I. Introduction:A. Jim Putman the senior pastor at Real Life Ministries holds discipleshipconferences yearly where literally hundreds of church members have been trainedin intentional and relational discipleship. At these conferences he asks ministryteams two questions:1. First, what is the mission of the church? He said almost everyone answersthat question right since they know it is a conference on discipleship –discipleship!2. But the second question he said in all of his years of doing these conferencesonly two entire teams of leaders agreed upon the same definition. Thequestion was, “What is a disciple?”3. Putman goes on to say, “Think through what problems can be created ifeveryone in the same church has a different definition of a mature disciple!”4. I could not help but wonder how we would do as a church, as a leadership, asa staff with that second question and how having different definitions wouldimpact MVC desire to become more of a disciple making church!B. So today the goal of my sermon is very simple define a disciple1. But, it really is not that simple as there is much said in Scripture about beinga disciple. So to be true to the Bible means there are many things to consider.2. But, on the other hand, if we make our definition too complex and includeeverything then no one will ever remember specifically what we are trying todo.3. So my hope today is to capture the heart of what the Bible says about who adisciple is and yet say it as simply as possible. If I can accomplish that thenwe have a goal, which is Biblical enough to build our ministry and livesaround!C. The way I want to accomplish that goal this morning is simply by looking at twokey things:1. The definition of a disciple2. Look at Jesus’ call to become a disciple3. Then I will try to put it all together into a simple and remember-able yetbiblically accurate phrase!D. Let’s start by reading Mt 28:19-20 again where we see this as the heart of ourmission – to make disciples! Read• Let’s start withII. Definition of a discipleA. As you know disciple is not a common word in our culture but it was in theirs atthe time of the New TestamentB. For the definition of the word disciple, as found in Mt 28:19 I went to sevendifferent Greek dictionaries to see how they defined the word - mathētēs(μαθητής). Here are some highlights of a few things I found.1. Most use the word “disciple’ or ‘follower’ to describe this Greek word.2. But when you break down the Greek word itself - it means to learn, a learner,a pupil.a) Listen to Lk 6:40b) The word pupil is the exact same Greek word here as disciples in Mt 28– only difference is that in Matthew it is a verb and here it is a noun!c) And we see here that the goal of discipleship is to become like yourteacher. As disciples of Jesus, our goal is to become more and more likeJesus. Less of me and more of Jesus3. Vines dictionary says this word indicates thought accompanied by endeavor, hence it denotes one who follows one’s teaching,a) He goes on to say “a disciple was not only a pupil, but an adherentb) Or simply someone who binds himself or herself to observing or obeyingwhat they learn!C. So bottom line the definition of a disciples has two aspects to it - first they are alearner and secondly they follow or obey what they learn1. So a “Disciple of Jesus” is one who is learning from Jesus how to live lifeand following or obeying what they learn from Him about how to live life.2. Our key verse for discipleship in Mt 28 even further validates this definitionas you remember that the three ways we make a disciple are revealed in thispassage and the third way has to do with teaching.a) Readb) Teaching them to obey everything Jesus has taught us to do!• And that really leads us right into Jesus’ call to discipleship that helps us understandwhat a disciple is.III. Jesus’ call to discipleshipA. Turn to Mt 4:19 and Read v19-201. Jesus called them to follow Him in v19, and v20 tells us that they followedHim.2. This takes us back to what we already have established about a disciplea) Jesus is inviting them to be His pupils, to learn from Him and obey whatthey learn from Him.b) Jesus is saying simply I will take the lead in determining the direction ofyour life, I will teach you how to live life God’s way and I am invitingyou to follow, to live out, to obey the way I teach you to live!B. But Jesus adds something onto to this call that further develops what a disciple is.1. Listen again to v19.2. If you follow Him then He will make you a fisher of men!3. In other words, you are called for a purpose! Now you will join Jesus on Hismission to seek and save the lost and to teach believers to obey everythingJesus taught us!C. When we follow Jesus and his teachings, He will make us into a person thatinfluences others for the sake of the kingdom of God. We will not only followJesus’ teachings but we will also join Him in His mission!• So let me now try to summarize all that we have heard and come up with a …IV. Simple definition of a DiscipleA. Learning from Jesus, obeying his teachings about how to live life, and impactingothers with Jesus’ teachings!1. How many of you think you could remember that one tomorrow?2. How many of you think you could close your eyes right now and say it?B. Let’s try this one on: Learning and obeying Jesus’ teachings and impacting othersfor Christ!1. There may be a few who could remember this one tomorrow or some whocould repeat it right now with their eyes closed!C. Let us try this one on Following Jesus! Impacting Others!1. When you consider the process we went through to get to this statementtoday I think it would be fair to say it captures the heart of the Bible’steachings on what a disciple is and it is simple enough to remember and givedirection to our lives and church2. Repeat it with me! Three Times• Now we are going to move to a time in the service where some of our people arefollowing Jesus in obedience by beingV. Baptized
