Born into a Muslim family, to an Iraqi father and a Lebanese mother, Aida Schlaepfer shines a light on a tragic and ignored period in Western Civilization being the Assyrian Genocide of 1915. Only in recent years have the Armenians been recognized with the loss of their 1.5 million ancestors, but the Assyrians have continued to be forgotten. Schlaepfer does not divide the 1915 Genocide based on ethnicities or denominations but discusses the suffering of all Christians within the Fertile Crescent, whether Assyrian, Chaldean, Syriac or Armenian. I spoke with Schlaepfer shortly after she landed in New York City, NY following her overnight flight from Switzerland to discuss 'Souls in Transit', her interest in the Christian communities of her homeland and the stuffering they continue to endure in Iraq and Syria.
