Lacie Hamilton grew up in an abusive home with a mother who was addicted to alcohol and pills. At age 5 was the first time she was slapped and very quickly internalized the message that it didn't matter what she wanted or needed. As the abuse continued, Lacie developed her own addiction as a coping mechanism. It was her means to dissociate. It controlled her completely, but she viewed it as a more acceptable coping mechanism than what she saw her mother doing. At age 9, Lacie had just gotten out of the ICU when her mother took her to a bar where she drank all night and then beat and attempted to strangle her in the hotel room. Lacie barely escaped but then her mother fabricated a series of lies to try to discredit her story.Lacie was removed from her mother's home, but spent the next few decades trying to untangle the messages her mother's abuse had written at her core, I'm not enough, I'm not safe, and I'm not worthy. Eventually she found help in the form of EMDR and Ketamine Therapy, two treatments that helped her break free from the thoughts and behaviors that kept her stuck in her abusive past. Today Lacie is the Director of Operations for Lionrock Recovery, and a licensed psychotherapist in over 10 states.Episode ResourcesTherapy Website | laciehamilton.comConnect with RyanInstagram | @ljhamcakesConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

Amy Farnan grew up in a loving home with three siblings and lots of laughter. Even with all the good she found at her core, the inability to feel like she had worth or a voice. In middle school she found alcohol and immediately felt powerful and pretty. She began saying the things she'd always wanted to say and the feeling hooked her.She had some level of management of her drinking through high school and college and upon graduation began a spiritual journey with her brother, a professional rock climber and someone who sought the spiritual in the same way she did. The trip was incredible and opened her eyes to what other people were doing in the world, but 6 months later, her brother died in an avalanche while climbing. As the search for his body began, she was put in the strange position of communication liaison with the search efforts and caretaker to her parents. In that place, she was unable to grieve in the way she needed to and instead placated herself and those around her with “He died doing what he loved.”And thus kicked off her destructive relationship with alcohol that caused her to lose her child, her romantic relationship, and her life. Finally with the help of AA and Lionrock Recovery, she was able to find sobriety that has remained.Episode ResourcesConnect with AmyInstagram | @afarnan1Facebook | @afarnan1Connect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastYouTube | The Courage to Change PodcastTikTok | @ashleyloebblassingamePodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifePodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

Born at only 3lbs 6oz in 1962, Lesa Thomas was sent home to die but the universe had a different plan. Unfortunately, this plan didn't mean that Lisa's life would be easy as she experienced severe childhood neglect and trauma. As a result, Lisa feels almost no pain. She eventually turned to alcohol to cope, but found Lionrock Recovery in early 2020. Today she lives in Texas with her spouse whom she has been with for more than 33 years. She has three children - two deaf, two the same age, and two adopted. Lisa says that nature is her religion and the one thing that makes her happy. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking, taking care of plants, and trying to eliminate paper in her life. She works from home and loves the fact that her commute is across the yard and the traffic is merely a multitude of squirrels and birds that cross her path.Additional InformationEpisode ResourcesKasher in the Rye Book | Available on AmazonConnect with Dr. Brad ReedyDr. Brad's Website | drbradreedy.com Evoke's Website | evoketherapy.comConnect with The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastPodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastPodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifeYouTube | The Courage to Change PlaylistLionrock ResourcesLionrock Life Mobile App | lionrock.life/mobile-appSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings
Vanessa Hurr is an award-winning editorial portrait Photographer and resident Corporate Development guru for Lionrock Recovery. Her journey from entrepreneur to Lionrock teammate began in March of 2020 when a world-wide pandemic put a quick halt to her life as a photographer in the live events industry. Within weeks of coming onboard the Lionrock team to assist with an unprecedented influx of Americans seeking substance treatment, she lost her big brother, Matt, to an overdose in April of 2020. Even with an age difference of 5 years, Vanessa and her brother had an especially close relationship that was built on a foundation of friendship and a shared love for music. The grief and sense of loss surrounding his death was compounded with extreme isolation due to Covid. The result was a calling to action and a dedication to the task of supporting people who are seeking treatment and freedom from substance abuse.Vanessa divides her time between Madison and Chicago with her husband and 2 little boys. Her life as a Photographer, in addition to being a dedicated part of the Lionrock team, is evolving as she adds the title of Cookbook Author. Vanessa will be traveling the US throughout 2021-2022 with a private chef to support and document a person's journey through recovery via food! Vanessa's goal is to provide insight into basic cooking skills and also share individualized nutritional information to people who might not otherwise have access to essential dietary knowledge that supports their recovery. She wants to set people up for success, no matter what stage of recovery they're in, so that they can feel empowered when preparing meals for themself and/or their loved ones.Episode ResourcesThe Beacon Website | https://thebeaconhelps.org/Connect with Vanessa HurrInstagram | @vanessahurrConnect The Courage to ChangePodcast Website | lionrock.life/couragetochangepodcastPodcast Instagram | @couragetochange_podcastPodcast Facebook | @thecouragetochangepodcastPodcast Email | podcast@lionrock.lifeYouTube | The Courage to Change PlaylistLionrock ResourcesCoffee & Coffee Alternatives | lionrock.life/shop-productsSupport Group Meeting Schedule | lionrock.life/meetings

Today's episode is very special, as Ashley gets to interview the other two Co-Founders of Lionrock Recovery - Iain Crabb and Peter Loeb. You may remember Peter from Season 1, Episode 8 where he and Ashley shared their journey together as father and daughter through Ashley's struggles in addiction. When discussing other special episodes to produce, we thought it would be fun to do an episode that talks about another story of trials to triumph - the story of Lionrock Recovery!Tune in as Ashley, Iain and Peter laugh (and almost cry) about the difficulties of being entrepreneurs, starting and building a company that is years ahead of its time, and reminisce about some of the greatest moments we've had together through this journey. If employees aren’t engaging in substance use while on the clock, why is it so imperative that employers champion substance use disorder recovery? “The research shows that 180 billion dollars are lost annually in productivity, turn over, and health care costs in untreated substance use disorders,” says Peter Loeb, one part of today’s father/daughter guest duo - Peter Loeb and Ashley Loeb Blassingame, co-founders of Lionrock Recovery. Together, along with their third co-founder Iain Crabb, they have pioneered the path into telehealth for substance use disorder (SUD) recovery, using technology to make treatment more private and attainable to people who could not otherwise get help. With employees in nearly every state, Lionrock Recovery has been convincing the world that virtual treatment is effective far before COVID19 forced us online. In this episode, Peter shares some of the background in founding Lionrock, and Ashley touches on the benefits of using a platform like Zoom in therapy. They define SUD and discuss why employers should care about recovery, how workplace cultures feed into SUD, and what employers can do to help. Lastly, Ashley shares a few personal stories to humanize SUD, and they each leave us with a tangible tip we can use to help further the discussion of recovery in our own companies and lives. This episode is sponsored by University of Wisconsin Health and Wellness Management, offering online bachelor’s and master’s degrees in wellness management. You can visit hwm.wisconsin.edu for more information. Graduates of the program have launched successful wellness careers with healthcare systems, wellness program vendors, community agencies, insurance providers, even the military. Here are some really cool things about UW Health and Wellness Management: Courses are designed and taught by distinguished faculty from the University of Wisconsin, many of whom actively work in the field. UW Health and Wellness Management is also supported by an advisory board, industry experts from corporations such as Children’s Wisconsin, Willis Towers Watson, and the Wisconsin Department of Employee Trust Funds, who offer advice on changing trends in health and wellness so that students are learning the most up-to-date methods. Students often say the flexible, online format is a big factor in their ability to earn a degree. (Our recent situation is an indication of the advantages of online learning.) Although the program is online, you’ll make strong connections with peers and faculty, just as you would on campus. UW Health and Wellness Management bachelor’s and master’s degrees provide the skills you need to manage comprehensive employee well-being programs that foster healthier lifestyles and promote the value of staying well. Bambi never imagined herself as an alcoholic or drug addict. It wasn't until she was deep into an abusive relationship that she realized she could not stop. Although she was introduced to sobriety at age 18, it took 8 years of relapse to finally become sober at 26 years old. She is a nurse and a mother of two, but it wasn't until the birth of her first child, she experienced a true emotional bottom in sobriety . Her journey in motherhood changed not only her life, but her views on sobriety as well. She is in a devoted relationship with her, also sober, high school sweetheart and lives in Hawaii. Ashley Morgan is an Interior Designer based in Los Angeles, California, who has had a tumultuous journey to find her recovery. Ashley moved around Europe and Asia a lot as child, following her father's career in finance, until she landed back in LA, where she spent the majority of her childhood. She found drugs and alcohol at a very young age only to discover that her illness would progress quickly. After being in and out of 13 different treatment centers and hospitals, Ashley finally came to the realization that she wanted to live, and the only way to do that was by a complete lifestyle change - and most importantly - being completely honest with herself. In the 10 years that followed, she began her career in the field of addictions treatment, started a family, and continued to stay on the path of recovery. Kendra Allen is the woman behind the Instagram account, online course and blog, Break Up Bestie. After going through a series of unhealthy relationships in her early 20's, including narcissism, abuse, and emotional unavailability, Kendra began gathering tools and working on herself to prevent that from happening again.Around the same time, Kendra got sober at the age of 21 after years of self-destructive alcoholism. A few years into that, she experienced the break up that brought her to her knees - the kind where you feel like you might actually be dying. Without having alcohol to take the edge off, she really dove into what it takes to go through a break up with grace, with growth, and learned how to come out the other side a better person. After seeing a huge gap in break up advice online, Kendra decided to launch Break Up Bestie the same year she got married to the love of her life. She loves empowering women to view a break up, not as an end, but as a beginning to a beautiful path to learn about yourself and to get in touch with what you really want out of a relationship.Kendra just launched The Break Up Bestie online course, which walks people through how to navigate their break up with tools, writing exercises, a workbook, and 23 video lessons. Her Website: www.breakupbestie.comInstagram: @yourbreakupbestie / www.instagram.com/yourbreakupbestie **Our Sponsor:**Lionrock Recovery (http://www.lionrockrecovery.com)**Follow us here:**Podcast Website: (http://www.lionrockrecovery.com/podcast)Facebook: (https://www.facebook.com/LionrockRecovery/)Twitter: (https://twitter.com/lionrockrecovry)Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/lionrockrecovery/)Questions, comments or feedback? #14: Bella Baskin is the 29-year-old founder & CEO of Bless it Bag. While working at WBTV as a photo consultant, she would drive by the same homeless people every day, and although she desperately wanted to help them, she feared if she gave them cash it would just be used for drugs or alcohol. As someone with a history of addiction (who is now 10 years sober) Bella did not want to contribute to the vicious cycle she personally knew could be so toxic. After going to Los Angeles' Skid Row, talking to people who were experiencing homelessness, and asking them what would be useful alternatives to cash, she decided to create bags for men, women, and dogs, filled with essential items (including snacks, water, personal hygiene products and more) that could easily be kept in her car to pass out to those in need. She decided to call her charity Bless It Bag®, and created a website where people could purchase bags that they could keep in their car to give out to those in need. She also made an Instagram account to educate others about the problems affecting the homeless community and to let her followers know what they could do to help. Welcome to the Courage to Change – A Recovery Podcast! For our inaugural episode, we have our host, Ashley Loeb-Blassingame, in the hotseat as our producer interviews her. We figured it would be fun for you to get to know her before we kick off all the amazing guests we have planned. Ashley got sober in January of 2006 and just celebrated 13 years of recovery. She graduated from UCLA in sobriety. She is the director of HealthTech Women OC, the co-founder of Lionrock Recovery, she is happily married to a sober husband, and is a sober mom of 2-year-old twin boys. And you won't want to miss a second of this episode because Ashley's story will have you on the edge of your seat! Ashley's experience with substance abuse started from a very young age, and took her to the brink of death. From drinking in her closet at age 7, to using cocaine in middle school, to being kidnapped, to hiding vodka in her water bottle at her first NA meeting, to going through multiple treatment centers and almost dying in an overdose...she is living proof that recovery is possible for anyone, no matter how bad their situation is. Tune in to listen to her journey from the depths of addiction to the life of sobriety and recovery that she enjoys today.
