You Can't Enjoy Sex When You're At War With Your Body | Emma Louise Boynton

Why is it so hard to enjoy sex when you have spent years at war with your body?On this episode of Seen, I sit down with writer Emma Louise Boynton, founder of Sex Talks and author of Pleasure. I devoured her book and couldn't wait for this conversation.Emma opens up about developing an eating disorder as a young teenager and what it took from her. She explains how it worked as a coping mechanism, why understanding what it gave her mattered more than finding its cause, and what a later ADHD diagnosis helped her make sense of.We talk about how disconnecting from your body makes intimacy feel impossible, why sex education that never mentions pleasure teaches us to perform rather than feel, and the contentification of sex online. Emma also shares how sex therapy at 28 changed everything, starting with one line from her therapist: for as long as she was at war with her body, she would struggle to enjoy pleasure. In this episode, you'll learn:- Why disconnecting from your body makes intimacy so much harder, and how that can be relearned- What a pleasure journal is, and why Emma's therapist started there rather than with sex- Why good sex education has to include pleasure and bodily boundaries, not just risk- How to start with body neutrality when loving your body feels completely out of reachThank you Emma for being so honest. If you take one thing from this, let it be what she says to every woman who tells her she is broken: you are not alone, and you are not broken.Chapters: The Darkness Behind The Confidence (00:00) How An Eating Disorder Takes Hold So Young (02:19) Why Someone With An Eating Disorder Is So Hard To Reach (05:21) The Turning Point That Made Her Want To Get Better (09:52) What Your Eating Disorder Is Giving You, And The ADHD Link (14:03) Early Sex And Living In A Body You Cannot Feel (18:18) Why Sex Education Never Mentions Pleasure (21:21) The Case For Lifelong Sex Education And Porn Literacy (28:46) Bonnie Blue And The Contentification Of Everything (34:01) Rock Bottom At 28 And The Dinner Party That Changed Everything (36:15) At War With Your Body, And Why Your Body Is Your Home (41:39) Why Recovery Is A Dance, Not A Finish Line (46:54) What Sex Therapy Actually Looks Like, And The Pleasure Journal (48:36) The Shame Around Bulimia, And Finding Good Company (53:03) Why We Still Cannot Talk About Sex Openly (56:14) Where To Begin If You Feel Disconnected From Your Body (1:00:49)This episode is for education only and isn't medical advice. In this episode, the guys unpack Proverbs 5-7, where Solomon exhorts his sons to pursue sexual wisdom. Where does sexual folly lead? How do I become sexually wise? Listen and find out.We are continuing our study in the book of Proverbs. In 2026, if there is any area that we need wisdom it is in the area of sexuality. When you look around at the world, there is massive confusion in this area. But Proverbs gives us clarity. It diagnoses sexual folly and tells us where that leads. And then it reveals sexual wisdom.Topics covered:- Ben birdied three of his last four at the Champions Tour in South Dakota- Presidents Cup preview and a brand new PGA Tour event in Asheville, NC- Mailbag: how to play well in tournament rounds, and how to pursue your future wife in a godly way- The forbidden woman represents any sexual activity or temptation to any sexual activity outside of the relationship between a man and a woman in the covenant of marriage- The downward spiral of sexual folly: Draws, Dependence, Distortion, Damage, and Destruction- For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey, and her speech is smoother than oil (Proverbs 5:3)- The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin (Proverbs 5:22-23)- Can a man carry fire next to his chest and his clothes not be burned? (Proverbs 6:27-28)- He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself (Proverbs 6:32)- Her house is the way to Sheol, going down to the chambers of death (Proverbs 7:27)- 7 R's for sexual wisdom: Remember Your God, Repent of Your Sin, Resolve to Walk in Purity, Refrain from Temptation, Rehearse the Truth, Rely on Others, Romance Your Wife- For a man's ways are before the eyes of the Lord, and he ponders all his paths (Proverbs 5:21)- If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9)- Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house (Proverbs 5:8)- Her lips drip honey. But her feet go down to death. Play out the whole clip.- Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment (Proverbs 18:1)- Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. (Proverbs 5:18-19)- Sex is like fire. In the fireplace it keeps us warm. Why Your Marriage Went Sexless — And How to Talk About It Again | Ep. 200

Taboo to Truth: Unapologetic Conversations About Sexuality in Midlife

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 12, 2026 14:55

In this episode, I'm kicking off season 7 — and marking 200 episodes of Taboo to Truth — with one of the topics that comes up in my practice more than almost anything else: sexless marriages. From the outside, a relationship can look completely fine — you're raising kids, running a household, laughing together — while almost nothing is happening behind the bedroom door, sometimes for months or years.I break down five real reasons marriages and long-term relationships go sexless, and why it's almost never as simple as losing attraction. I start with what happens when one partner shuts the conversation down completely rather than simply saying no to sex in the moment, and how that silence lets both partners write their own, often painful, story about what it means.I get into the mental load that quietly kills desire, in women and in men, and why "why don't you want me?" is usually the wrong question to ask. I talk about what it looks like when someone has lost touch with their own erotic identity so completely they can't answer what turns them on anymore, and why exploration, not pressure, is the way back in. I also get honest about porn, sex toys, and AI companionship: when they expand a sex life versus when they quietly start to replace it, and what I call the "secret garden," the private sexual world a partner can build without the other ever knowing.I close with why the sex talk can never be a one-time conversation, my framework for balanced sexuality — sensation, relationship, and fantasy — and why a sexless relationship is not automatically a loveless or a doomed one.‼️ Join the waitlist for my upcoming coaching program for midlife men HERE. What happens when porn becomes sex education by default? Cindy Gallop is the founder of MakeLoveNotPorn, a social sex video-sharing platform built on a simple idea: the problem isn't porn itself — it's what happens when a culture that can't talk openly about sex leaves porn to fill that gap by default. In this episode, Robin and Cindy explore the space between what we see on screen and what sex actually looks and feels like in real life. They talk about why there's no formula for great sex, how mainstream male-lens porn shapes expectations without us realizing it, and why communication, curiosity, and shared sexual values matter more than knowing the "right" move. The conversation also covers body image and desirability, sexual agency, and what it looks like to bring empathy, respect, generosity, and honesty into the bedroom. Cindy shares how parents can talk to kids about sex and porn without shame, how couples can finally open conversations they've avoided for years, and why becoming a great lover starts with a willingness to learn — not perform. At its core, this is a conversation about what becomes possible when we stop outsourcing our understanding of sex to porn, and start treating sex as a place to practice the same values we want in love: honesty, respect, curiosity, reciprocity, and care. This conversation with fellow mama and Dr. Robin Dickenson, family physician who spent years doing trauma informed care for families breaking generational cycles, explains why (our) shame around puberty, reproduction, and sex education does the damage we don't want to do, and how to help ourselves out of it. This conversation moves through adverse childhood experiences and why trauma shows up in the body as a physical health risk, not just an emotional one (we can't hear this enough!). It unpacks the difference between limerence, the biochemical spark of new attraction, and real love, and why confusing the two sends people into relationships that were never built to last. HELLO. Why did literally no one ever tell us about this until now, and how incredible we can teach out kids this now. And of course, we land on the idea every kid needs to hear early and often: you are already whole, you were never missing a piece someone else has to complete. This is for all of us raising kids who want the fear taken out of these talks and replaced with honesty, timing, and age appropriate language that actually works. It's messy, it's real, and it's a reminder that you get to redo the moments you didn't handle well. I love how down to earth and deeply practical Robin is. She is a(nother) mama who mastered her field, and then said, "we could be doing this better." In addition to this incredible conov, if you want to go deeper you can access age-by-age guides and the many other resources to provide clinical truth to our kids in a protective, age appropriate, and shame-free way. Helping Your Teen Navigate Sex, Relationships, and Growing Up Without Shame Talking to your teen about sex is one of the conversations many parents dread—but avoiding it can leave teens turning to friends, social media, or pornography for answers. So how do you have honest conversations without making everyone want to disappear? In this episode, Dr. Cam sits down with Amy Lang, M.A., sexuality educator, parent educator, and author of Sex Talks with Tweens, to discuss how parents can replace fear and awkwardness with confidence and connection. Amy shares practical strategies for talking about consent, pornography, LGBTQ+ support, body autonomy, and sexual health in ways teens can actually hear. Whether you're wondering when to start these conversations or how to recover after saying the wrong thing, this episode will help you build trust while preparing your teen for healthy relationships and safer decision-making.   WHAT YOU'LL LEARN IN THIS EPISODE • Why preparing your teen for healthy relationships works better than trying to prevent sexual activity • How to talk about consent, pornography, birth control, and healthy sexuality without creating shame • Practical conversation strategies that help teens actually listen—and keep coming back with questions • How supporting LGBTQ+ teens and creating a judgment-free home improves safety, trust, and emotional wellbeing

Christian Parent, Crazy World
How to Have the "Sex Talk" with Your Kids—God's Way (w/ Elizabeth Urbanowicz) - Ep. 185

Christian Parent, Crazy World

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 8, 2026 55:42 Transcription Available

Talking to Your Kids About Sex and Gender Feels Overwhelming? You’re Not Alone—But You’re the Parent God Chose for This Moment. Every Christian parent knows “the talk” is coming—but what if it’s sooner (and more important) than you think? In today’s hyper-sexualized, ever-confusing culture, silence is not an option. Someone—or something—will shape your child’s understanding of sex and identity. The real question: Will it be you, or the world? In this courageous episode of Christian Parent/Crazy World, Catherine sits down with trusted guest Elizabeth Urbanowicz, founder and CEO of Foundation Worldview. A seasoned educator, experienced apologist, and creator of biblically sound resources for families, Elizabeth Urbanowicz knows firsthand how to translate tough, complex topics for young hearts and minds. Her latest book, Helping Your Kids Know God's Good Design: 40 Questions and Answers on Sexuality and Gender, equips parents to start the conversation confidently and biblically—no matter your background. What You’ll Learn and Why It Matters: Why Christian Parents Must Go FirstCatherine and Elizabeth Urbanowicz make the case that if you’re not the “first voice” your kids hear about sex and gender, you risk becoming just another commentary in a noisy world. The “founder’s effect” means early, honest conversations establish you—not TikTok or the classroom—as the expert in your child’s life Conversation Starters for Every AgeNervous about what to say? Take a deep breath. From age-appropriate ways to explain anatomy (“God has given us special body parts to be treated with special care”, to using simple analogies (“Just like we keep some toys special, some parts of our body are to be kept private”), Elizabeth Urbanowicz outlines practical conversation guides for little ones. She provides step-by-step approaches to discussing biological differences, the mechanics of sex, and the beauty of God’s design—without shame or fear. God’s Good Design: Framing MattersInstead of starting with “don’t do it,” this episode teaches you to anchor the entire conversation in God’s goodness—how He created sexual intimacy as a precious gift for marriage, reflecting Christ’s relationship with the Church, and as foundational, not shameful, to human identity. Addressing Parental Wounds and FearsWhat if your own story is marked by pain, brokenness, or unmet expectations? Elizabeth Urbanowicz offers heartfelt encouragement for parents who feel disqualified by divorce, loss, abuse, or regrets: “God is working all things together for your good by conforming you more into the image of His Son”. The goal is not a perfect family portrait—it’s pointing your kids to Jesus, no matter the journey. You Will Not Steal Their Innocence—You Will Protect ItAfraid early conversations will “ruin” your child’s innocence? Elizabeth Urbanowicz gently challenges that notion: real harm comes not from truth, but from leaving kids uninformed and unprepared in a fallen world. Notable Moments & Quotes: “Whoever is the first person to talk about a topic naturally becomes the expert in our minds.” “Sexuality is not something to be embarrassed or ashamed of. It’s a gift God has given to be used within its proper context.” “Our feelings do not determine what is right or wrong. God’s good design does. And it is for our good.” About the Guest:Elizabeth Urbanowicz holds a master’s degree in Education from Northern Illinois University and an MA in Christian Apologetics from Biola University. She’s a former elementary school teacher and now a foremost voice in equipping families, churches, and educators to help kids think biblically and critically. As founder of Foundation Worldview, her resources are used and loved in homes and ministries nationwide. RESOURCES REFERENCED: Helping Your Kids Know God’s Good Design: 40 Questions and Answers on Sexuality and Gender (book by Elizabeth Urbanowicz) Foundation Worldview (foundationworldview.com) Recommended children’s books: God Made Your Body and How God Made Babies by Jim Burns Catherine’s free resources, podcasts, and articles for Christian parents available at catherinesegars.com Contact Catherine: catherine@catherinesegars.com Why Christian Parents Can’t Sit This One Out:If you feel afraid, overwhelmed, or like you’re starting late, take heart: God is sovereign, even over our mistakes. Begin where you are, trust God’s leading, and choose to be the voice your child needs. Discussion Starter for Listeners:How will you intentionally become the “first voice” for your children on sex, identity, and God’s good design—even if it means facing your own discomfort or starting late? What step will you take this week to begin the conversation? Tune in and be equipped—because Christian parenting may be crazy, but you don’t have to do it alone. How do you teach a young child that sex is private and special without making them feel ashamed of it, and without accidentally training them to keep secrets from you, which is the exact tactic abusers count on?In this episode, Elizabeth Urbanowicz walks through a simple framework Christian parents can use with kids as young as four: the difference between good secrets (protecting something valuable) and bad secrets (trying to cover up sin). There's physical, social, and emotional stuff that goes on that can be a bit mystifying.   Feelings in their bodies, misunderstanding chatter about who's crushing on whom (#grammar police), and trying to figure out how they fit into all this can be tough.   Your next step? Crushes can be soooo painful! And fun! And confusing! All the things. I've been a terminal crusher my entire life, so, for better or worse, I'm kind of an expert.   Explaining them can be a little tough because crushes are amorphous in just about every way. Hope this helps!   Why your kid's crush should be taken seriously. I'm featured in this CNN article from 2022. I totally forgot about it.   What Are The Differences Between Behavior And Attraction? (but thanks for that quote anyway). Hosted by Klein, Ally, and a cast of weirdos (both on the team and from their audience), the show is known for its raw, offbeat style, offering a mix of sarcastic banter, candid interviews, and an unfiltered take on everything from culture to the chaos of everyday life. In this episode, Dr. Finlayson-Fife joins Holly J. Moore of the Made for Moore podcast to discuss how parents can approach conversations about sex and sexuality with their children in a way that is honest, ongoing, and shame-free. They explore why discomfort doesn't have to be a barrier, how to begin these conversations early and keep them going, and how offering values around sexuality — rather than fear or shame — empowers children to make informed, confident, and integrity-driven choices as they grow.

I've long believed the unexpected should be what we expect. Even with the best plans, things can shift, sometimes without warning. Last year, I shut the podcast down, not long after promising The Sex Talk 2.0.  Truthfully, I was very excited to bring that to you. Although nervous. Early in my career, I had made a promise with God that I would follow him into this territory, to which I never felt ready, as long as I never had to talk about sex. Obviously, God had different plans.  I never imagined the first series would be such a hit, and as I was preparing for the second version, I started to question things. I didn't question whether the series was valid, but whether I had the knowledge and experience to bring it to life.  The answer was no. At least not at the time. After recording a few podcasts for that series, I decided it wasn't the time. I needed space and my own experience before I could bring that to the world. I had things I needed to sort out on my own. So I shut down the podcast. In fact, I shut down a lot of things, never with the intent to quit, but with the intent to grow.  The rebrand I didn't know I needed! Last year was a whirlwind in the best possible way. I really grew up, and that growth led me to redefine my health and re-establish my story.  In this podcast, I share my journey, what I learned, and where I'm going. I've never been healthier. Yet at the same time, I've never been more confident that I'm not here to bring more knowledge but to inspire lived action. In this series, you'll hear a lot about my story and experience, offering you insight into approaching health differently. Join me as we relaunch the podcast in this new season, uncovering common health illusions. Join us "After The Show." After the show, I invited my husband on to share the real and very vulnerable question we tried to answer for The Sex Talk 2.0 that ultimately led to our break. We also talk about how that became the heart of this new series and updated message here at The Living Well!
