Your next campaign is going to go viral. That is, if you use the marketing lessons we're sharing in this episode of Remarkable. There's a recipe basically guaranteed to get you eyeballs, likes, comments…pure and fevered engagement from your audience. And we're taking that recipe from Solo Stove's viral ad featuring Snoop Dogg. That's what we're talking about in this episode of Remarkable with the help of special guest, Chief Evangelist at purple cork, Corrina Owens. Together, we talk about collaborating with an A-list celebrity, creating buzz, and timing your campaign just right.About our guest, Corrina OwensCorrina Owens is Chief Evangelist at purple cork. She has over a decade of experience driving revenue for high-growth B2B SaaS organizations and B2C organizations with integrated and multi-channel marketing strategies, building and scaling demand generation and account-based marketing departments, programs, and campaigns from the ground up. She also co-hosts Direct, a podcast that features unsung GTM heroes who make magic happen for their organizations. Corrina is also a GTM Advisor at Navattic, GTM Partners, and Postal.io. Prior to purple cork, Corrina was Senior Manager of ABM and Enterprise as well as podcast host at Gong.About purple corkPurple cork was started by former CMOs and go-to-market specialists offering end-to-end event management. They create fun, fresh and professional virtual tastings designed for business value. They're helping hundreds of leading SaaS and other companies create unique and memorable experiences no matter where they are. They've driven over $3 million in closed won revenue from accounts who've attended their Taste of Qualified events.About the Solo StoveSolo Stove makes a suite of portable, smokeless fire pits and camp stoves, along with a pizza oven and grill, and all the accessories. The unique thing about the Solo Stove is that it's smokeless. The company explains that it works more efficiently than a traditional fire pit by funneling air through the pit twice for a second burn. So not only is there no smoke, but it also burns hotter. Solo Stove was started by brothers Jeff and Spencer Jan in 2011 as a Kickstarter campaign that raised $15,000. It now has an enterprise value of nearly $500 million after going public in 2021 as Solo Brands. It has also since acquired the brands Chubbies, Oru Kayak and Isle. What B2B Companies Can Learn From the Solo Stove:Aim for the stars. Solo Stove took a big swing when they asked Snoop Dogg to partner with them. And it paid off big. Corrina says, “What we see with B2B brands is that the ones that take big swings and make big bets - those are the ones that are going to stand out from the noise. So what's the risk here when the upside is just so massive? If nothing else, at least Snoop Dogg knows about solo stoves, right?” She adds that “leveraging celebrities that have that kind of vast appeal, but don't have so many endorsements quite yet, I think is the way in for marketers.”Spark buzz. On November 16th, 2023, Snoop Dogg posted to his Instagram account that he was “giving up smoke,” and to “respect his privacy at this time.” The post sent his fanbase into pure pandemonium. That is, until four days later when Solo Stove launched their collab with Snoop Dogg. One Snoop fan then responded to his Instagram post, “Got me one and I love it!!!

For Solo Brands, being DTC represents more of a state of mind than it does an exclusive sales channel. "A lot of people have in the last five years equated DTC to e-commerce," said John Merris, CEO of the portfolio company that owns Solo Stove, Oru Kayak and Chubbies, among other brands. "We believe that direct-to-consumer is focused on the relationship… All direct-to-consumer is actually talking about is a brand's ability to connect with its consumers." That thesis has translated to Solo owning a variety of brands that sell both offline and online, but Merris insists that they all are able to connect uniquely well with their target customers. He joined the Modern Retail Podcast this week and spoke about Solo's growth over the last few years, what it's like being a public DTC company as well as why he looks for in potential acquisitions. One of the major focuses for Solo as a company is maintaining profitability. "We do not buy businesses that aren't profitable," he said. And this was one of the reasons his company decided to go public in late 2021. "We were just on a tear -- growth was really solid, we were very profitable, we generated free cash flow," he said. While the economy has certainly shifted since 2021, Solo has been able to maintain its profitability -- at its most recent earnings its gross profit increased 11.4% to $54.4 million. Merris considers Solo to be a brand that outperforms competitors. "Our business was pretty sound, it still is," he said. "And I think that you see that now, in this environment, there are very few businesses -- especially [those] that would consider themselves direct-to-consumer businesses -- that are still growing and doing so profitably." Solo represents a small but influential group of companies trying to take a roll-up approach. Merris was clear that Solo doesn't have targets in terms of number of acquisitions each year, but that it's always looking for new companies to join that fold that fit its parameters. With that, Merris has yet to find company that has a business model analogous to what he's trying to build. "There really isn't any sort of conglomerate or aggregator -- or whatever you want to call it -- that we aspire to be like," he said.

He says part of his love for it is down to the mystery of experimentation; when you test with live people, you never quite know what the result will be. Shiva also describes the appeal of CRO to most people in the industry, saying 'I think all of us are generally just curious people who all want to continue to learn. I just find it incredibly fascinating.' The idea of testing to learn and not just testing to win is also explored, focusing on the importance of the process to ultimately get the most effective results

John Merris is the CEO of Solo Brands, a public company that's making huge inroads in the outdoor space. With strong, in-the-trenches experience in sales and growth (he started as a door to door salesman!) Merris joined the company as its 7th employee and has since helped them acquire 3 other brands that now fall under the Solo Brands umbrella: Solo stove, Oru kayak, Chubbies apparel, and ISLE paddleboards. When he was approached by the founders of Solo stove, a smokeless fire pit company that was actually based in hometown which he hadn't heard of previously, he was very intrigued and, nine days later, ended up joining as the 7th employee! Through his growth mindset and track record of building teams, John was soon asked to become the CEO, successfully acquired the other brands, and helped take the company public. Going public, however, also brings some unexpected emotions and tricky waters you have to navigate as a leader. He quickly realized that by taking care of customers and maintaining a long-term view (versus only worrying about stock price and quarterly earnings) the company would be successful.  He states, "I believe that building a great brand centers around culture. What's your culture? Well, at Solo Brands, our culture is the customer. It's taking exceptional care of our customers. I don't believe, per se, in us going out as a company and building our brand. What I believe in is taking great care of our customers and letting our customers go and build our brand for us. In this episode, John and Pete discuss:   1. How Merris approaches building a successful company through organic and inorganic growth. 2. What techniques he uses to create a culture of exceptional customer care. 3. How he works with and leverages influencers, social commerce, and affiliates to build Solo brands out as an umbrella.  Click here to download transcript.  Other episodes you'll enjoy around the outdoors:  Jared Hanley: https://www.halotalks.com/episode-325-jared-hanley-ceo-naturequant/ Robert Swan: https://www.halotalks.com/robert-swan-founder-of-2041/  Connect With Us: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thehaloadvisors/?hl=en Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Integritysquare YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@halotalks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thehaloadvisors LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/integrity-square/ Website: https://www.halotalks.com Loved this episode? Spencer Jan is the Co-founder of Solo Stove, an ecommerce brand that designs outdoor products. In 2021, he grew the company into Solo Brands and raised $219 million through an IPO, giving the brand a valuation of over $2 billion before exiting. As an entrepreneur experienced in ecommerce, digital marketing, and bootstrapping businesses, Spencer focuses on providing inspiration and advice to other entrepreneurs. In this episode… What if you could exit your business and live the life you want? How can you scale your business, increase its worth, and sell it for more money? As an entrepreneur who sold his business twice for nine figures, Spencer Jan doesn't sugarcoat the process. He started his company with one goal in mind: to regain control of his time and life. Yet, this requires patience as it takes most entrepreneurs 10 years to build and scale a company. If you launch a business in hopes of exiting, Spencer says to remain determined and stick to your strengths since it's easy to get sidetracked by other entrepreneurs' success stories. By forging your own path, you can develop an exit strategy that maximizes your earnings. In today's episode of the eCommerce Profits Podcast, Joshua Chin invites Spencer Jan, Co-founder of Solo Stove, to talk about how he built and sold his company for $2 billion. Spencer shares advice for maintaining an adequate work-life balance and achieving long-term business success, key factors influencing business growth, and how he prepared his business for the sellers' market.

John Merris, CEO of Solo Brands, has spent a life trusting his gut and doing what he loves- Leading companies and building meaningful brands. John talks about the wisdom learned from growing up on a ranch in Texas and how lessons of doing worthwhile things the “Right” way, still influence and guide how he runs organizations today. Being the CEO of a public company means there is much more scrutiny on how you operate, but fortunately for John, this comes naturally. He believes that the best way to find success in your profession is to actually treat the company, like it's your own- Take care of your environment, don't mindlessly spend money and give it a 100%, every day. John believes that the key to building an unstoppable culture is NOT to try to build one- Instead, live out what you want your company values and ethos to be. Culture is built and sustained from the top and Leaders must serve as the example for others to follow- You should never expect your Teammates to do something you are not willing to do. Solo Brands is a Brand of Brands- Which means they really have to know who they are and how all their company stories (from Oru Kayak to Chubbies) resonates with their customers. John strongly believes that building a brand is about knowing how to tell your story and especially echoing why you matter to the world. Often times we can be mired by the things we build instead of the impact we make. Solo Brands is not a company that just makes innovative fire-pits and fun apparel, but they stand for helping folks create good moments that leave lasting memories. Brands are about what you believe and how you make people feel- Not what you make.
