In this compelling follow-up episode of Custom Apparel Startups, we're delighted to welcome back Howard Potter, of A&P Master Images, for another deep dive into the world of custom apparel. This time, Howard sheds light on the troubles encountered when starting a t-shirt business and shares invaluable advice for both new and established entrepreneurs in the industry.Kicking off the episode, we tackle one of the most daunting questions for newcomers: "Which machine to buy?" We stress the importance of broad research and caution against getting tunnel-visioned on a single technology. The landscape of apparel printing is vast and choosing the right equipment is crucial for your business's specific needs and goals.Growth is a central theme of our conversation. Howard underscores the necessity of forward-thinking, particularly in terms of spatial planning. Anticipating future expansion is vital; many businesses struggle because they run out of room or fail to utilize their current space efficiently. He offers practical tips on scanning your property and equipment regularly to identify items that can be repurposed or removed, thus making way for essential upgrades or additions.Howard also introduces the concept of "temporary fixes" for immediate problems, but he warns against relying on these for too long. The discussion moves towards a critical analysis of production, time, and space utilization. He advises that operating at 95% capacity is a clear sign that expansion is overdue. Ideally, businesses should start thinking about improving their space or equipment when they hit the 70-75% threshold to avoid stagnation and ensure continuous growth.Beyond the technical aspects of running a t-shirt business, Howard emphasizes the foundation of any successful venture: providing excellent service, treating people right, creating outstanding products, and committing to education and transparency. These principles, he argues, are non-negotiable for long-term success in the custom apparel industry. This episode is a treasure trove of insights for anyone looking to navigate the challenges of starting or expanding a t-shirt business. Howard Potter's expertise and candid advice make it a must-listen for entrepreneurs eager to make their mark in the world of custom apparel. Here is the list of tips for growing your business:Get the right equipment for YOUR businessConsider the space you have to work and make sure you have room to growIf you are not using things or running out of room, be sure to scan your space and see how you can improve efficiencyConsider your % output / % time / % spaceIf you are at 95% production / space ... you need to expandReally you should be improving space / equipment at 70-75% rather than waitingSimple rules for growthProvide great serviceTreat people rightCreate a great productEducate your customerBe transparent

I was honoured to be sat with Andy Shovel this week to discuss all things THIS. The plant-based meat alternative brand which not only has award winning and mind blowing products that capture the hearts of even the meatiest of meat eaters but it captures everyone's attention with it's creative marketing stunts as well as it's campaigns which you can't walk more than 2 steps in London without seeing THIS on either a bus or a London cab!To speak to Andy about his journey from burger chain Chosen Bun to THIS was fascinating as well as hearing about his own personal journey to Veganism. Andy wanted to actually disrupt the market, actually create a product for meat eaters and really make a difference and it's fair to say that he has definitely achieved this alongside his Co-Founder Pete.In this episode we discuss the following topics:Life before working in the food industryThe Chosen Bun days What led them to starting THIS and why Meat AlternativesHow did you start the process of building THISThe first product The name THISTHIS marketing - getting into trouble and capturing attentionIngredients in meat alternative productsWhat three things have hugely contributed to the success of THISAndy's personal diet and journey from meat eater to Vegan This (pardon the pun) really is a fantastic episode and THIS is a really fantastic product which has gone from strength to strength and I'm really excited to watch it continually growIf you haven't tried the new THIS streaky bacon then run don't walk to your nearest shop!To find out more about becoming a Greedy Vegan head to www.greedyvegan.uk or follow us at @greedyveganltd Hosted on Acast. When you think of your business you may think:Maria does the printingJohn does the artMark does the writing and websiteEtc.But how do you manage that as you grow? or if Maria is sick?Do you also think about how Maria does maintenance? Or how Mark answers chats on Google? Or how John posts to Facebook and answers comments?Further, as you grow, and art goes from 5 files a day to 15 files a day, WHAT are tasks that John could take off his plate? IS there something Mark can do instead of John? Is there something you can hire a part-timer to do, or outsource to an agency? When considering the inner workings of your business, think about all the tasks, not the people.List EVERYTHING that the business needs to do.This should be anything your team can think of, and the list needs to grow over time.e.g. maybe Mark makes sure your website domain renews every year, but he doesn't remember that when making the initial list.List the talents and skills of your teamWho can do what? One team member does the website now, but can anyone else? One team member dislikes running the embroidery machine, but CAN in a pinchList areas of potential growth & efficiencyIf we did X better we could growIf we did Y better we could save moneyList anywhere that is close to max capabilitiesIs there an area where your team is spread thin? One team member does art. Some days there is more art than they can do. What if you grow 10%, can they handle that? How will you handle that if you do?Go back to the topNow that you have all the above data, take a bird's eye view of it.What can you improve?Do you need redundancy in talent? How will certain jobs get done if someone is sick or on vacation? If you hired someone, what could they fill in?

No need to dance around it.On the back of 2 silly decisions, I lost more than $100,000I got emotional and let fear take over at a critical point. And it still pains me to this day. But…Rather than pretend it didn't happen, I remind myself continually. Why?So I don't repeat it.The good news is that since making that poor decision, I have gone on to make many better decisions.Anyway, here's the story…I had just completed my first successful property development. The bank had revalued the property, and I was blown away by how much it was now worth.I was jumping around celebrating the result.Throwing high fives and hugs at Bianca.I contacted my buyer's agent to share the good news, as he was the one who found the project. While I was on the phone, I told him it was time to find the next one.“Let's go again!”The excitement of the win fueled me to want to do it again.About 4 weeks later, my buyer's agent sent me an email. It read:“Found another property.A similar type of project.Let's go.”However… things had changed. The 2nd phase of a pandemic had just started. We had just gone into lockdown for the second time.Things were getting intense around me.- I wasn't allowed to leave my home- The news was reporting some dire projections- There was constant talk of the economy collapsing.I'll be honest.I got fearful that things were going to get much worse and that the property market might collapse.I got on the phone with my buyer's agent and said.“I'm going to pass on the project.”He was shocked to hear it from me.Asked me if I was sure several times.I also knew I would forfeit the $5,000 deposit I had paid him also.To be fair, he did the work and deserved to be paid.I was the one who passed on it.Fast forward a year.I couldn't help but check what happened to that purchase. As I knew someone else must have bought it and done the development.Sure enough, someone did buy it.I looked up the value of the property.Let's just say that I'll summarise my feelings with a simple word: “ouch.”It had gone up in value… by A LOT!!!I reflected on this experience. What can I learn from this?Where did this go wrong for me?Here are my conclusions…I made the decision to buy another property emotionally and then made the decision to pull out of the purchase emotionally. The high of the win on the first property and the low of the fear of my environment both guided my actions.I never make good financial decisions when my emotions are running hot in either direction.I've since made sure to get my emotions in check before making big decisions.Anyhow…On this week's podcast, Grant and I share more of our financial mistakes and regrets. There are some powerful lessons within these stories.Episode Highlights:00:00 Welcome to Full Stack Business Owner01:10 Investing in "good" businesses and taking advice07:25 Finding businesses and investments that you can control10:16 How fear holds you back from grabbing big opportunities16:00 Your goals play a role in decision making20:35 The downside of lending your money27:31 How financial mistakes can help business owners learn and growIf you enjoyed this episode, be sure to subscribe, tune in and share this podcast!Resources:○ Full Stack Business Owner website: https://www.fullstackbusinessowner.com/Subscribe: ○ Subscribe on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwTrdJ5udIvx44PgEAlHgmw○ Subscribe on Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/full-stack-business-owner/id1607453342Connect with Full Stack Business Owner: ○ Join the Full Stack Business Owner Community: https://www.facebook.com/fullstackbusinessowner/○ Follow us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fullstackbusinessowner/○ Follow us on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/fullstackbusinessowner/○ Send your enquiries or drop by to say hello: grant@fullstackbusinessowner.comDISCLAIMER:All information we share is NOT financial or investment advice and is purely intended for entertainment and educational purposes only. Most good hires are a result of luck rather than skill. In fact, I would argue that very few hires are by design. Throughout my career, I have never met a person who views interviewing and the hiring process as anything more than a chore that they loathe. In fact, the most common reaction to the subject usually results in a huge “uuuggghhhhh” or “I hate hiring”. We dread the act of interviewing and hiring because it is unstructured and inconsistent and it produces mediocre results. Here's the good news: There is an easy fix! When we train our people how to interview it brings purpose to each and every interview question. Giving your people a basis for decision-making that results in extraordinary hiring results. He also shares his framework for thinking about brands and the important things you need to know about raising money.Listen up and learn from this episode.KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODEIf done correctly, you can use a rebranding opportunity as a tailwind, not a headwind. A brand can be likened to a human being with 3 core attributes: A name, an identity, and an essence. When Outway rebranded, what changed was its name, not its essence and its identity.Raising money should be looked at as an accelerant not a way to keep yourself alive.Bring in a strategic group of investors. They lie.Google can identify common denominators depending very heavily upon your niche. If you are a marketer that's looking to target specific avatars and you know your avatar well, there's no level of targeting that's unavailable to you with Performance Max.Don't build multiple campaigns on Performance Max, build one campaign. For eComm, separate by product categories and replicate your asset groups by distinct audience signals.Limit superfluous URLs. The products that people click on are not the products that people buy.You want all of your product catalog in your PMax campaign separated by product categories.Make sure that you are spending enough so that you are actually getting data. A lot of brands have begun running ads on Tik Tok but are running into challenges when it comes to scaling. Good results are out there, you just need to learn the winning formula for a profitable TikTok ad.In this episode, Sven Muchow of Muchow Marketing talks about TikTok ads and TikTok Marketing for e-commerce brands. He shares a campaign setup and its winning ad formula.Listen and learn from this episode!KEY TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODEThe 2 big mistakes that a brand can make in a Tiktok ad are:1.) Reusing a Facebook ad for a TikTok ad; and 2.) Using organic content that had been viral on their TikTok account as a TikTok Ad.In a TikTok ad, make your audience feel like a user recommends your product to them.A TikTok ad should hook the people, give 2-3 brand benefits, and contain a call to action.Calls to action on TikTok ads shouldn't be a formal "Buy now.", but rather something more in line with how a friend might suggest something, like "Try my favorite product now."The best results come from a 20 to 35-second TikTok ad.If an ad shows creative fatigue, take the creative, change the first clip or the hook, and just re-upload it. TikTok will think that it is a whole new ad.To find the winning creative, you have to test a lot. There shouldn't be demographic targeting in the beginning.Do 5 ad sets and start with $100 a day.You can scale a lot insanely fast on TikTok.Always try to find influencers and creators. In this latest episode of the podcast, we talk to Brett White, founder of Be Leaders and author of Shift Happens – 10 Effective Thinking Skills and The Lacuna Effect. He is accredited in Life Coaching, Thought Dynamics and Organisational Leadership, having worked with over 50 organisations and 350 leaders and influencers. We are glad to have him with us to talk about team engagement and why this is important for your business. Here are some key takeaways from this interview:1.What is employee engagement? Employee engagement is, simply put, team members and the leadership in the organisation's love for what they do, enjoying who they do it with, and doing it well. It seems simple but if those things aren't happening in your team, there's limited chance in doing their job effectively and successfully. It is important that team engagement isn't just an add-on and an afterthought in your business, but it comes from within and becomes part of who you are and who your organisation is.2.Employee engagement at an all time lowBrett talked about statistics out in the latest Gallup research that the employee engagement in Australia is currently at an all-time low of 20%-- which means only 20% of the team are actively engaged or fully engaged, while some are partially engaged and worse, disengaged. This data has an impact to your business and should be assessed in your own organisation. 3.Develop a culture of communicationA connection with people that you're working with builds trust in the organisation. Once this is established, you will be assured that your people are going to help you and are doing their jobs for the right reasons, which also links to contribution. What is the purpose of the organisation? You're not just out there doing things for a dollar then why are we here and what problems are we solving?4.Create a culture of appreciationIn our conversation, we also touched on appreciation, a really important topic which centres on being valued, heard and acknowledged. Build this culture within your organisation and it will help in your relationships with your employees. 5.Employees want the opportunity to growIf you want to grow, you want to be a part of an organisation that you believe gives you that opportunity to grow. Otherwise, you're going to be stagnant and eventually you're not going to be the best version of you. All these factors in employee engagement boils down to strong leadership and leaders that believe that these are important.
