Capt. Sarah Gardner has been a full time fishing guide for over 27 years. Along with her husband, Capt. Brian Horsley, they are the go to guides for fly fishing in the area surrounding Outer Banks, NC. Sarah & Brian both run 23 foot Jones Brother boats and target Cobia, Redfish, False Albacore, Spanish Mackerel, Bluefish, & Sharks on the fly. After getting her Bachelor's degree in Illustration from Moore College of Art in 1987, Sarah worked in advertising for several years, but she never felt comfortable working inside. To be around other like-minded people and earn extra money, she took an evening sales position at Anglers Sport Center, a big outfitter in Maryland. Shortly thereafter, out of the blue, the legendary Lefty Kreh called and would eventually take her under his wing and help her flourish into the great writer and spokesperson she is today. Years later, Lefty was the photographer at Sarah & Brian's wedding and their relationship continued until his passing a couple of years ago. Sarah is known by her peers as being a hardy, tough, badass of a human whether on the water, in the woods, or competing in Ironman races. Not only is she “fishy” on the boat but her love for teaching and educating is extremely inspiring. As people look up to Joan Wulff and Kathy Beck, many view Sarah as a role model and shining example on how hard work, dedication, and chasing your passions can lead to a extremely fulfilling life. Thanks for coming on the podcast, Sarah!

Every Summer ends with Labor Day!!! But here in along the coast we like to start the end a week early with our Spanish Mackerel World Championships. Hosted by Trilogy Outdoors Media annually, this family friendly event is contested the weekend before labor day out of Crazy Sister Marina. This year our team was lucky enough to be blessed with the victory in a very tough field. Capt. E, Winston Glover, Addison Glover, and the Bassmaster were blessed with a 5.26 pound fish and took home the title. There are many ways to target spanish and we feel like the tournament has been won on many different techniques over the years and we share our winning technique and exactly how much work goes in to being prepared to target these little spaniards. We also talk about the effects of Hurricane Idalia on the rivers here and how it may effect the opening of shrimp baiting season with rising waters from the massive rainfall inland. We hope you enjoy and happy hunting this weekend to all that are gonna get out and enjoy the opening of dove season and deer rifle season. Enjoy!!!!
New catch limits for Spanish mackerel has forced many out of an industry they've made a livelihood from for decades.
John MacKenzie chats with Bruce Batch, N4 Commercial Fisherman in Far North Queensland, about the new laws and quotas for Spanish Mackerel catches that came into effect from July 1st 2023. Bruce is one of the few remaining commercial fishermen who struggle to survive in a world of green-dominant policymaking driven by a UNESCO report. Bruce's future is being threatened whilst Australians are buying imported seafood instead. The government assessment of fish stocks has been independently reviewed and misrepresentations have been alluded to by experts who have questioned the legitimacy of computer modeling. From last Saturday July 1 2023, commercial fishers will have their total catch quota radically reduced, and recreational fishing will see a limit of one Spanish mackerel per person, or 2 per boat maximum.
John MacKenzie chats with Allen Bobbermen, Cardwell-Based Commercial Fisherman, about how his livelihood will be impacted when the Queensland government phase out gillnets completely and limit the catch for Spanish Mackerel. An emotional Mr. Bobbermen blasted the state government's actions against fishers and fears for the future of coastal towns that rely upon fishing. Although the government has assured the populace that there is no intention to ban all fishing on the Great Barrier Reef, their "salami tactics" has eroded the commercial fishing industry in small shaves, slice by slice, and trends show it will continue until there isn't anything left.

Here is a recap from Salty Swiggs Facebook Page: Dirty 30 Club! Fish of a Lifetime! February 25, 2023 @ 1pm I was able to catch and release my new PB #speckledtrout 30” and 9lbs! This is a catch that I will never forget. I have been targeting big trout now for almost 2 years now and never expected to knock this fish off the bucket list that quickly. Big trout 30+” are a rare specimen and only occupy 0.5% of the entire fish population. So catching a big trout in any manner is something special, but when you do it INTENTIONALLY on your favorite Pure Flats Slick Lure that you customized it's on a level of its own. The fight was amazing burning drag, digging hard and the whole time I'm thinking it's probably a nice redfish…but if it's a trout! Sure enough she didn't let me see her until the end and when her head popped up I knew she was a giant. I finally netted her after a fight of about 2min, which felt closer to 20min. The size of her was mind blowing and didn't hit home until she was in my lap. Her mouth was so big I could put my fist in it! I then quickly took a selfie and a few board pics and got her back in the water to start reviving. As I swam her next to the kayak I could tell she was in good shape, so I popped a tag in her and had my buddy snap a few quick pics before I released her. Seeing her swim off couldn't have been anymore rewarding!!! Thanks to everyone that reached out to say congratulations, and thanks to all my friends for the knowledge and encouragement targeting these beautiful fish! I'm truly humbled by this experience and it has been one of the greatest accomplishments of my life! Y'all Stay Salty!! John MacKenzie chats with Kord Luckus, Qld Director of the Australian Fishing Trade Organisation, to get an update on the Spanish Mackerel issue after the government proposed a commercial fishing limit earlier in the year. The Queensland government claimed that the stock biomass levels are at 17% of their 1910 levels, and therefore considered a limit to be put in place. Commercial and recreational fishers across the state have banded together to understand if the science has become politicised, and to put pressure on local members of parliament.

Murray Jones from 4CA speaks with the President of the Queensland Seafood Industry Association Allan Bobbermen about proposed changes to the Spanish Mackerel fishery
On this week's episode we hear about Tim's tournament snook, Tanner's late season spanish mackerel, and the fish of the week is the pigfish. Luke Ovgard's pre sale as mentioned https://www.inkshares.com/books/fishing-across-america?fbclid=IwAR1GV6C_H2kiaJRmkzQbaArxk5BmpLfWcgJCjOwzDfIshYnQHR_3AOuS_rQ
Today John spoke with Bob Baldwin, Chair of the Australian Fishing Trade Association and former member of federal parliament, about the Spanish Mackerel debate. Queensland fisheries estimate that Spanish mackerel numbers are at 17% of un-fished stock levels and recommend that commercial fishers lower their catch levels, some reports suggest that up to a 90% reduction is needed. This will negatively impact the many people whose livelihoods depend on fishing for Spanish mackerel.
On today's episode we talk with Capt. Lionel James of Lion's Tale Adventures out of Destin, FL. We talk about the great weather over the last few days and how that has helped push everything further into the Spring pattern. The Spanish are thick and the Pompano are showing up in decent numbers. Early season Cobia are sure to be pushing up the beaches as well. There are a lot of species to target this time of year and its a great time to get on the water and the good news is that it is only going to get better from here!
This week, we celebrate opening day by tying every fly in the Wal-Mart trout starter pack on at the same time, ripping a spinner that could battle a salmon shark through the bridge hole, bumping a plastic hell bug in the last resort run, and turn a drinking straw into a limit catcher. On today's episode we talk with Capt. Justin Leake of Panama City Inshore & host of Chasin' the Sun on Discovery. He tells us about a fantastic mangrove snapper fishery inshore this time of year and he shares how he targets them. We also talk about the Mahi bite just a few miles offshore where the water changes color. If you don't feel like running a few miles out, we also talk about where to find exceptionally big Spanish mackerel and how Justin targets them. This is not the typical redfish, tarpon episode. Sometimes conditions dictate that your best chance of success is to target a completely different species and maybe use a method that you haven't tried before. Hopefully, this will give you guys some ideas of things to look for and try if "normal" conditions won't allow you to target your desired species. This is the kind of podcast that can turn a bad day of fishing into an epic one, you just have to be willing to change some things up and adapt. Just another reason to get out there and wet a line!

To kick off our Destination series, where we cover a select waterway in Australia and its fishing prospects, we land on Coffs Harbour, Australia. Coffs Harbour is a city on the north coast of New South Wales. It's known for its beaches and the Big Banana monument and amusement park. In the waters off Coffs Harbour Marina is the Solitary Islands Marine Park, home to abundant wildlife, including our target species for todays podcast - the Spanish Mackerel, Cobia, Kingfish and Tailor. The boys dive deep into Michael's archives to nut out a plan for fishing one of the most productive spots on the East Coast. They chat about everything from getting there, places to stay, techniques to use, and the perfect weather to make the Destination FIRE when it comes to fishing. All that and more on this weeks episode of the Reel Action Fishing Podcast.
On today's episode we talk to Capt. Brant Peacher or Angler Up With Brant out of Pensacola, FL. He tells us about a road trip he took to the "new" pier in PCB and the success he and some of the other anglers had there. We also hear a little more about a recent trip offshore and talk about the fun (and effort) that goes into fly casting. All in all, it sounds like things are moving in the right direction as we enter one of the sweet spots, where there are more fish available to target than most of us have time to fish. A great problem to have!
On today's episode we talk with Capt. Lionel James of Lions Tale Adventures out of Destin, FL. The Spanish are thick & the Redfish are starting to move in too. The sheepshead bite is still going strong but the Cobia haven't shown up in the numbers we should see in a few weeks. All in all it sounds like a great time to get out on the water in Destin and the good news is that it will only get better! Be sure to follow Capt Lionel's YouTube channel to see what he is catching and learn a few tips and tricks to help make the most of your time on the water.
