Welcome to Season 6, Episode 159 of The Superlatively Yes Podcast. Jasa and I have been running in circles this week, but unfortunately, not the same circles. We talk about Junie's over-the-top birthday celebration (which led Quincy to a new dog sitter,) my time doing some in-state work traveling with Shawn, and then I introduce Jasa to an old favorite childhood beverage of mine: Chocolate Coke. I quickly drove through Jasa's hometown of Bee Branch, Arkansas, yesterday and couldn't wait to tell her all about it. Santiago Sansone is one of 10 talented young chefs who have been selected for the 2024 Pacific Region S.Pellegrino Young Chef Academy Competition. Santiago works as Chef de Partie at the Four Seasons in Sydney, and he was put forward for the competition by the Executive chef. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Santiago grew up watching his grandparents cooking every day, preparing dishes for celebrations and holidays, and making pasta every Sunday. Santiago spent four years doing a law degree but realised that he enjoyed the joy and creativity he got when he cooked for his friends and in a part time job he had and so he changed direction and signed up for culinary school. He did various internships in Buenos Aires and then Santiago went on to work for a catering company specialising in Italian cuisine. Here, he became passionate about working with flour, pasta, bread and Italian sweets. Following this, Santiago started working in his first leadership role, as Chef de Partie, at Negroni in Buenos Aires before heading to the States to work at The-Ritz Carlton in Santa Barbara and working across four outlets including fine-dining restaurants, sushi restaurants and more. Santiago came to Sydney, in 2023 and started work as the Chef de Partie at the Four Seasons. It was such a pleasure talking to Santiago and hearing about the inspiration behind his dish, Sweet Memories, which features sweetbreads, or as Argentinians call them, molleja. Through childhood flavours, Santiago aims to encourage people to experience something different by creating a beautiful and colourful dish and he hopes he can change people's minds and perceptions with this dish and in so doing, help utilise all parts of the cow, so that there is less waste.

The love affair began on a summer night down by the riverside.It was June 2002 and The Flood was already there to make a memory, having been invited to perform as the guest artists with the Huntington Symphony Orchestra as part of its “Picnic with the Pops” series.Listening that night from the orchestra's string section was a 30-year-old violinist named Noel Sayre, who was making memories of his own.Tickled that night by The Flood's eclectic mix of folk, swing and hokum tunes, Noel took pains after the show — that ended with fireworks over the Ohio — to seek out Floodsters and compliment the band's two sets. Later Noel even confessed he still had one of the kazoos that The Flood handed out that night for its weird/wonderful sing/hum-along orchestrated by our kazoo guru, Dave Peyton. Noel ran into harmonicat Sam St. Clair somewhere and Sam invited him to The Flood's next get-together at the Bowen House.“Noel call here and asked for directions,” Charlie Bowen told his mom in an email the next day, “and then came on by. What an outstanding musician! He was able to improvise right along with us. His fiddling and Joe's complimented each other so well.”A Huntington native, Noel lived in Columbus during his college days when he earned his degree in music, and still he played with a band there called The Black Swans. Before that, Noel also was celebrated for his work as a member of Pretty Mighty Mighty, one of Columbus's best-known indie rock act, which toured throughout the United States in the 1990s. He also played locally with a group called Good Ol' Boys and A Girl."Well, he must have had a good time with The Flood," Charlie told his mom, "because he was the last guy to leave last night. We're hoping he comes back regularly. Fun!” Shocking NewsNoel did come back regularly. He jammed with The Flood dozens of times over the next five years, right up until the time of shocking death on July 3, 2008.Sixteen years ago tomorrow, Noel Sayre passed away in a Portsmouth hospital a day after almost drowning in a community pool in nearby Wheelersburg, Ohio. He was 37.Lifeguards discovered Sayre's body on the bottom of the deep end of the Porter Township Community Pool, according to a report from the Scioto County Sheriff's Department. Two young lifeguards dove into the pool, recovered him and performed CPR before he was transported to the Southern Ohio Medical Center.“It appeared to be a massive heart attack,” detective Jodi Conkel of the sheriff's department told The Columbus Dispatch.Tributes and MemorialsA few days after Noel's death, columnist Dave Lavender published a tribute in Huntington's Herald-Dispatch, calling Sayre a “top-shelf fiddler/violinist and Grade A human being.”Recalling the last time he saw Noel, Dave wrote, “Both of us, running late to go see The Bing Brothers on Marshall University's campus a couple of months back, stood outside for a good half hour getting updates on this beautiful, crazy thing called life. “Sayre was fresh back from a West Coast tour with The Black Swans,” Dave added, “and was filled with the joy of discovery and music and seeing this great country and its splendor.”Later that month, the Bowens attended Noel's memorial service at the First Presbyterian Church, highlighted by a display of the young man's violin and by the performance of a trio of musicians from the Huntington Symphony. "It was sad and sweet," Charlie wrote in an email to his mom. Noel, son of the late Paul A. and Genevieve Darden Sayre, had no immediate family left. In fact, the only family there were two out-of-town cousins, one of whom admitted she'd never met him. Noel's obituary listed among his survivors his loving girlfriend, Christy Turvey, and her children.“What was especially touching,” Charlie's note continued, “was the presence all the young friends who had come, some from as far away as New York. Many — most, even — were musicians who had played with Noel in various groups. Others were some of his young violin students and their parents.”About Today's VideoOne of The Flood's lasting regrets is that all of Noel's jams with the band pre-dated the guys' starting to regularly record the sessions for its weekly podcasts, so there is no audio or video of his visits to the Floodisphere. However, we did locate a September 2006 video of Noel playing with The Black Swans in a radio station studio in Portland, Maine. Eugene is a 95 years-young, successful businessman, who has been playing chess for 80 years! He was born in Spain in 1928 and has been married to Bea, his Brooklyn angel, for sixty-two years. He was among the best chess players in Spain and Cuba in the late 1940s and early 1950s. After many years away from chess, he earned the U.S Chess Federation rating as a Life Master at age 70. He also received a Silver Life Master Certificate from the American Contract Bridge League at age 93. Gene earned degrees in Sugar Technology and Agricultural Engineering at Havana University. He is known as one of the foremost experts in the world on the subject of edible molasses and has traveled extensively in his work. Gene's resumé includes significant contributions to the sugar industry, and he has been nominated for the Dyer Award, the "Sugar Man of the Year." He is still working as a consultant in new business development in the food industry. A decade ago, Vince Gill and Paul Franklin recorded Bakersfield, a tribute to the raw-boned country music that came out of the rough-and-rowdy clubs patronized by oil-field hands and agricultural workers in the '50s and early '60s—packed with songs by Merle Haggard and Buck Owens. And we visited with them for a Rig Rundown then.Now, just for the good times, these two legends of modern country music—the real deal kind—have recorded Sweet Memories: The Music of Ray Price & The Cherokee Cowboys. Price was known for his warm, baritone approach to melody, which is a perfect springboard for Gill's and Franklin's nuanced approaches to their own instruments.If you don't know Gill's work, it's about time you got informed. He has won more CMA Awards than any performer in history, plus 21 Grammys. He's also sold more than 21-million albums and is currently in the Eagles, where his sweet tenor voice and skill with harmonies makes him a perfect match. (You can also hear Gill talk about his work on Cory Wong's Wong Notes podcast, from November 2020.)Although Franklin spends his time over the pedal steel, this artist is no slouch. He's played on more than 500 albums, has been named Best Steel Guitarist by the Academy of Country Music multiple times, and is in the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame and the Musician's Hall of Fame. Franklin is the most nominated artist in CMA history. He is also a member of Grammy-winning outfit the Time Jumpers.Along with the PG video team, I met them at Gill's Nashville studio, where they recorded Sweet Memories. Mickey Newbury was born Milton Sims Newbury Jr. in Houston Texas, May 19, 1940 to Maime and Milton Newbury. As a child, he was inseparable from younger brother, Jerry; a friendship that continued throughout his life. In high school, Mickey decided to write songs. As a teenager, he shut himself up in his room, writing poetry and learning to play guitar. He organized a doo-wop group called The Embers.In 1959, Mickey joined the Air Force and was assigned to England for three years. When he returned to the United States, he pursued his dream of being a songwriter. He lived in a '54 Pontiac and traveled around Texas, Tennessee, and Louisiana playing gigs and working on shrimp boats. Eventually he found himself in Nashville, and in 1964, signed a publishing contract with Acuff-Rose. He moved to Nashville in 1965 and about this time, his first child Joe was born. Shortly thereafter, Jimmy Elledge was first to cover a Newbury song, Just as Long as that Someone is You.1966 was the year the music industry noticed Mickey Newbury. Don Gibson had a Top Ten Country hit with Newbury's Funny Familiar Forgotten Feelings, while Tom Jones scored a world hit with the same song. In 1968, Mickey saw huge success; three number one songs and one number five – across four different charts; Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) on the Pop/Rock chart by the First Edition, SweetMemories on Easy Listening by Andy Williams, Time is a Thief on the R&B chart by Solomon Burke, and Here Comes the Rain Baby on the Country chart by Eddy Arnold. This feat has not been repeated. That year, Mickey's first album, Harlequin Melodies, was released by RCA.Mickey met New Christy Minstrel member Susan Pack on a blind date in 1967 and would not see her again until 1969. Soon thereafter, they were married and living on a houseboat on Old Hickory Lake outside of Nashville. Over the next four years, Mickey released three albums that raised the bar on Music Row. Produced at Cinderella Studios outside of Nashville, and utilizing Nashville's best musicians, Newbury's trilogy of albums - Looks Like Rain, Frisco Mabel Joy and Heaven Help The Child are often referred to as masterpieces.Following the birth of their first child, Chris, in 1973, the Newburys moved to Oregon, to Susan's home town, just down the street from her parents, to raise their family. A daughter, Leah, followed in 1977. In 1980, Mickey was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter's Hall of Fame.During the 80s, Mickey took a break from the music business to concentrate on his growing family and golf. Stephen joined the family in 1983 and Laura was born in 1986. In the early 90's, he started writing, recording, and performing again, encouraged by his friends Bob Rosemurgy, Marty Hall, and Owsley Mannier. In 1995, Mickey's health began to fail, but he continued to produce beautiful music. 1995 to 2002 were some of his most productive years, during which time he almost doubled his catalogue. He also directed his attention to other ventures, beginning work on children's books based on his story-songs. On September 29, 2002 he succumbed to a long time lung disease and passed away in his sleep at home in Springfield, Oregon.Mickey Newbury's songs have been covered by hundreds upon hundreds of artists; over 1,000 covers have been documented. Mickey also recorded 25 albums over 35 years. Though he considered himself a songwriter first and singer second, his own albums are critically acclaimed and highly desired by a very passionate fan base the world over.Many consider him to be the best of the best. The Feet. Ugh, love ‘em or hate ‘em, we're stuck with them. Many people experience foot pain and may not know what to do about it, but Joe Pilates understood what to do, in fact, he invented two small devices to help correct the feet. The foot corrector and the Toe exerciser or sometimes referred to as the Toe Gizmo, were designed to strengthen and make supple the very foundation of our skeleton. I've asked our guest today, Karen Moran, a physical therapist to explain from her perspective how the feet play a major role in developing and maintaining a healthy functioning body. There is also a slightly nervous guest host. Host of season four of Sharing things, Kate, graduated in Applied Sport Science in 2018 from the University of Edinburgh. Kate currently works in the alumni engagement team within Development and Alumni at the University. You will often find her baking for friends and family, and looking after her beloved pets.  Ayanda is the current host of season five of Sharing things and is a final year Law student at the University of Edinburgh. Throughout her studies, Ayanda has assumed a number of roles, including EUSA's Black and Ethnic Minority Liberation Campaign Officer, as well as Microaggression and Cultural Sensitivity Intern the previous year. Ayanda is passionate about using the rule of law as a means of achieving social equality. As usual we start with an object, but in season five we celebrate hidden corners and unexpected connections.
