I spoke with Matthew Koma of Winnetka Bowling League, on the heels of their first LP 'Sha La La' & the standalone single "This Is Life", featuring Medium Build & Dawes. Both the album & the single share a healthy mix of nostalgia & unfiltered honesty - two things that are rarely seen together. But that's what makes Winnetka Bowling League great: they remind us that we can long for the simplicity of youth, while also recognizing the flaws of the past. Learn more about your ad choices. The More Things Change is a fiction anthology feature film from the Nest Collective 2 years in the making, that was released this month and premiered at the NBO Festival. Made in partnership with Forum Civ, as part of the Wajibu Wetu program, it is a unique narrative of exploring political resistance in Kenya through different eras including a speculative future. Co-directed by Collective members Akati Khasiani and Mars Maasai, the film explores what happens when an ordinary girl takes on a powerful adversary at great personal cost. It stars Nyawara Ndambia (Supa Modo), Melvin Alusa (Mission To Rescue, Crime and Justice, The First Grader, The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind), Bryan Ngatia (Too Early For Birds), Emmanuel Mugo (Sense8, Pillow Talk, This Is Life) and young luminary Stycie Waweru (Supa Modo, Just In Time, Lusala). Dr. Akati Khasiani is a storyteller and musician. She DJs under the name Atiani, favouring old-skool and throwback mixes. She is one of the lead artists behind Strictly Silk, a unique dance party whose guests, artists and service providers are diverse women and non-binary people only. She has a strong interest in the presence and participation of queer persons and femmes in and around African cultures, communities and spiritualities. Her work has been published at Jalada Africa, and she has been expanding her storytelling practice into film and other genres.

In today's episode, I will be talking with Marla and finding more in-depth meanings within the world of sex. As individuals, we assume we know what "sex" entails but this is not the case. Personally, I don't have all the answers. There's things that I still want to know about so I know for a fact Marla is the perfect person to have this discussion with. At the end of the day, THIS IS LIFE!
We turn the mic around today and Katherine is interviewed by the host of Narrative Species, music creator and engineer for the show Rick Kleffel. Katherine starts by talking about her history first growing up in a family of six scientists and then as an astrophysicist getting her PhD from UCSC and working at NASA in Mountain View for 11 years. We talk about the evolution of her focus from thoughts to feelings as she moved from science to dreams. Katherine describes her experience of almost dying in 2005 because she was able to successfully suppress her feelings until her appendix ruptured and how this lead her to go deeper into her dreams. Katherine recommends accessing emotions through bodily sensations rather than using labels and describes the parts of the brain that are active during dreams. She encourages listeners to set up their own dream groups and describes how difficult it can be to distill the chaos of dreams into a concrete dream report. We take a call from Chris from Felton who was a member of Katherine's original dream group which started in the 1990s. Chris asks Katherine about her vision for the future. She finishes by talking about the book about dreams that she is working on. Katherine is going to start up her Monday afternoon group again by mid-January. Contact her if you'd like to join. BIO: Katherine has worked with dreamers and dream groups for 25 years and has presented in venues ranging from local to international. She works with the international association for the study of dreams where she is on the Board of Directors and the Ethics Committee. Also she is the conference planning co-chair. My guest this week is Helen Nachintu, Natural Health Coach and Mentor. She is also a researcher and broadcaster on her programme This Is Life on Roku TV. During our conversation, we talk about health, healing and how long-held beliefs and unresolved trauma create disease in the body and taint our ability to see and receive Truth. We share what we see as Black Women experiencing the Great Awakening. I personally believe that race has been so perpetually weaponised to create a division that the amount of healing required as more Truth is revealed is at this point is unfathomable. We also talk about spiritual gifts and personal experiences. This is a bumper episode and I am grateful to have found a kindred soul. Find out more about Helen https://www.venushealthacademy.com/

Vincent Rivera grew up in Sacramento, California to a family who loved him, in their midst of their own struggles to survive. He was on a winning state championship basketball team in high school. In 2013, Vincent was sentenced to 96 years to life at the age of 25. His original parole date was scheduled for 2109. However, a recent youth offender law called AB-1308 will afford him the opportunity to go before the parole board in 2030. Vincent was very young when he experienced several robberies at his home. He felt powerless at the time and wanted to be able to help the situation. He made a decision at that point in his life that he would never be powerless again. Vincent saw his father deal with these types of situations in negative ways. His father used force and he started tying his masculinity to feelings of violence. He thought if he didn't let anyone mess with him or his family people would respect him. He started getting in fights in elementary school and thought he was doing it for the right reasons. He started to get away from that lifestyle in high school and started focusing more on sports. Vincent poured himself into sports and made new efforts with his academics because he wanted to stay eligible to play on the team. However, he was leading a double life when he was at home and his teammates had no idea the life he was leading a whole different type of life off the court. Vincent's family had to move to a different neighborhood where was exposed to drug dealing. Eventually, he began to deal as well. He was 17 when he got his first gun. In his way of thinking at the time, life was about survival. His friends started selling weed with him and he got one of his friends a gun. He saw this as a survival tactic. His close friend was robbed while dealing and he wasn't going to let that go without retaliation. He knew what car they drove and scoured the neighborhood trying to find the people who had robbed his friend. He thought he had identified them and shot up the wrong vehicle, but eventually he found the person who had robbed his friend and he shot and killed him. After serving six months in prison, Vincent had an inspirational conversation about his values and he began to challenge his belief system from the past. He started questioning what he truly valued and contemplated if he had really valued his family and friends. He began to take an insightful look into his thinking and behavior and how it led him to a life sentence in prison. That spark was just what he needed to start seeing things in a different light. This meaningful conversation and others that followed led to Vincent changing his behavior and authentic values became clear. He enrolled in college while in prison and graduated with his Associates of Arts degree with a 3.9 GPA. Today, Vincent is preparing for his parole hearing in 9 years by giving back to his community and investing in the people around him. He has a better outlook on life and is excited about his life in the future. Vincent is one of the most transformed persons that I ever met during my 21 years of incarceration. He was a part of the Lisa Ling's “Prison to Prep School” season premiere from her show “This Is Life.” Vincent is involved in many transformative groups today and lives his life working hard to help others transform their lives and leave past negative thinking and behavior patterns that led many men to prison. He is a mentor and role model for many and is a dear from of the CROP Organization. His last cell mate, James Willock, was released after serving 29 years of incarceration and was interviewed on our show. James and others from CROP keep in touch with Vincent and we look forward to the day when he brings transformation to the world out here. #ThePrisonPost #ThePrisonPostPodcast #CROPOrganization #WorkingTogetherToRestore Lives #TransformationalLeadership

On November 29th, 2020, Ashanti appeared on “Lost Boys,” an episode of Lisa Ling's nationally televised CNN Program, This Is Life. The episode took on a whole new meaning when things were revealed that he was not yet ready to share with his mother, who was watching the program as it aired live. (0:10) In Ashanti's introduction he gives context for the special episode, leading up to a story he is going to tell about when he was 8 years old. (3:50) Ashanti begins his story, about a tragic event that happened when he was 8 years old, and how he did not tell his mother because he decided that it was too much for her to handle, especially with his role as the "Man of the House" (8:25) We learn how the incident disappeared from his memory, up until 2015 when he heard a similar story from another man. (10:40) Ashanti shares the dissonance within: that his work is built around vulnerability, sharing things that people don't normally share, and that he could not share this story from his childhood. (12:00) We hear how Ashanti could never find a good time to tell his mom. (13:15) Ashanti gives a breakdown of the night of the “Lost Boys” premiere, and how he felt as he realized what was being revealed to the world. (16:38) We watch/listen to a video Ashanti made after watching this scene. (18:08) Ashanti continues to reflect on why he hid this from his mom for so long and then shares what it was like talking to his mom after the episode ended. (22:33) Ashanti reflects on how he was able to compartmentalize this trauma. He believes he did this subconsciously through eating. (25:07) We learn more about Ashanti's interview with Lewis Howes, and how even so many years after the incident that he couldn't open up about his abuse, even after hearing Lewis's story of abuse. (28:23) Ashanti shares the sense of joy and healing that is coming through him now. (31:23) Ashanti wraps up, and shares more about the Million Mask Movement and the Ever Forward Club. --- Create your own mask anonymously at www.100kmasks.com If you are interested in being on the Face to Face podcast, email us at everforwardclub@gmail.com --- Connect with Ashanti Branch: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/branchspeaks/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BranchSpeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/BranchSpeaks LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/ashantibranch Youtube: Branch Speaks --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/branch-speaks/message

Tidbit Tuesday is all about random little tidbits that I HOPE will bring you value! My intention is to keep them short and sweet, so that you can go about your day! Today I'm getting a little bit sentimental..... It's been over 2 months since we have been living in quarantine and dealing with COVID19. Do you find yourself just WAITING for things to return to normal? Waiting to start living again?? The thing that has been hitting me in the gut daily is that THIS IS LIFE. This moment. This day. This is life. And I don't want to look back on this time and realize I sort of just wasted it by sitting back, pausing, waiting for things to resume. THIS IS LIFE. If this episode spoke to you, take a screenshot, and head over to IG and tag me!! Be sure to subscribe to the podcast so you don't miss any future episodes!! See you next time!! xo
Are you in a holding pattern during the pandemic? Maybe it feels like you're in the Twilight Zone? During my last appointment with Dr. J, my psychologist, I confirmed that I was handling things better than expected. We talked about my mindset, and she encouraged me to share these thoughts with you all. So here we are. Another chance for you to learn from my mistakes! In the first half of my life, I had the tendency to put off living while I waited for my "real life" to start. Some people put off living while they wait to graduate college, others wait for marriage to begin really living. Perhaps as a young adult, many of us "wait" to start living until we feel like we have accomplished something that deems us worthy of "a real life." Yes, I spent my teen years and early twenties telling myself that when I started my own family life would truly start. Always looking towards some future event as the starting point of life. Once I realized I had done this, it was too late to do anything about it - the time was already wasted and I couldn't get it back. Still, it served as a good lesson for my current situation. Being "Stuck" at home. Making good use of our time at home While I am in self-isolation, instead of waiting for some unknown time when this pandemic will end, I choose to live. Of course, the way I choose to live has it's limits, but I am in control of my attitude while I wait. I'm in charge of what I do with my time while I am at home. The obstacle, this virus, will not keep me from being useful or productive. I will take on my life right where I am. What can I do with myself and what do I have to offer those around me during this time? What I don't want to do is to start avoiding life. In fact, no matter what I do with each day, no matter what YOU choose to do with each day: This Is Life. Regardless of your participation, or your lack of participation, in life - life is still happening! Don't wait. Live. Yes, the world is spinning out of control it seems, but your life is real and it's now. Your life is not on pause while we are awaiting the end of this pandemic. Every day, life is still going on, whether you choose to hide from it, or participate in it. [Tweet "Don't wait. Live."] Make a plan It's true, you can't go to the gym, but there are millions of online workouts that you can do for free. Walking is free. Do some form of exercise every day. Maybe you can't have coffee with friends, but you can Facetime, Skype, or Zoom to see their faces. Start having a "happy hour" or "coffee time" with your besties. If they won't respond, keep reaching out, don't give up. Tell them that it's important to you that they keep in touch while you are apart! You might not be able to go to work or work from home, but you could participate in a hobby or teaching others how to do something you are good at! Yes, life is hard right now. Things are frustrating and challenging and tiring. No one is denying that. I just want to encourage you to live. Don't stay in a holding pattern, waiting to start life again when this pandemic ends. We don't know how long that will be, so to stay healthy, the best thing you can do is to live life in a new and productive way. If you need someone to talk to feel free to reach out to me and make sure you are on my email list because I'm sending out tons of encouragement right now! Give Back with Chilipad My friends at Chili are offering something special for the heroes keeping us all healthy and safe. Now until April 30th if you buy any dual zone chiliPAD or OOLER sleep system they will donate a single zone chiliPAD to nurses, doctors, and first responders as a thank you! Hello, and welcome to another edition of Inside The Newsroom! I’m vacationing in Greece this week, but that ain’t no damn reason for no podcast. Bad English aside, today’s guest is… Francesca Fiorentini, journalist, author, comedian and officially the funniest person to grace Inside The Newsroom’s airwaves. Francesca is the host and head writer of Newsbroke on AJ+, contributor to The Young Turks, and host of Red, White and Who? on MSNBC. Below’s a post-game of everything we talked about and more. But first, my top articles of the week… Enjoy 🤓$70,000 minimum salary — The boss of a card payments company in Seattle introduced a $70,000 minimum salary for his staff, and the gamble has paid offClimate crisis — Where does each Democratic candidate stand on the climate crisis?Super Tuesday — The 14 states’ economies can be split into four typesFrancesca 👇The ‘Trump Effect’ on ComedyFrancesca began as a journalist and editor for multiple outlets before taking up stand up comedy in 2011, thus beginning her hilarious intertwined brand of comedy and journalism. She’s the latest up-and-comer of a trend made most famous by the legendary Jon Stewart, whose The Daily Show blurred the line between comedy and journalism so much that, at some points over the past decade, was the source of honest news in America. Stewart’s meteoric rise to fame shadowed the changing media landscape that allowed his epic rants and satirical takedowns of Fox News to go viral across the interwebs. Nowadays we have the likes of Michelle Wolf, Jon Oliver and Trevor Noah carrying the torch and blurring the line even further. And that’s where Francesca comes in, who managed to convince Al Jazeera to give her a shot with Newsbroke, and boy did it work out. MSNBC soon came calling with Red, White and Who?, which landed her across the table in a diner with Bernie Sanders.State of Cable NewsFor all our complaints about cable news, and don’t worry, there’s plenty in the next section, the Big Three cable news outlets are doing just fine. In fact, CNN, MSNBC and Fox News are doing more than fine: In 2018, they recorded a combined $5.3 billion in revenue, by far the most they’ve ever generated and a 36 percent increase since 2015. Much of that spike was due to the ‘Donald Trump Effect’, which has sparked a renewed ratings war between the networks. But while millions of people are still glued to their TV screens, the rise of alternative media on both sides of the political spectrum has fragmented the market even further. The term “24/7 news cycle” feels weirdly archaic. It’s because of the billions of dollars in the coffers that the cable networks must do better. Yes, they’ve 24 hours of programming to fill per day, and yes there’s nothing more in this world better than watching Wolf Blitzer stare dead-eyed into a camera on election night surrounded by 200 lobbyists and political operatives, but they have the resources to actually give us quality programs and not just excess garbage squeezed out from the sausage factory. Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown was an incredible look at the world through food and people. And Lisa Ling’s This Is Life brilliantly shines a light on life and culture around the globe. But the rest of cable news has turned into an opinion-fuelled orgy (yes I coined that all by myself 😊) which only fractures the political spectrum even more. Give us more Lisa Ling. Give us more Anthony Bourdain (RIP). Chris Matthews and Chuck Todd Show Their True Colors. It’s Brown.Cable news is doing great financially, there’s no denying that. But the thing about elections and controversial presidents like Trump is that they come in cycles, literally. As we discussed above, ratings and revenues have soared because of Trump’s provocative rhetoric and general idiocy, but the ratings and profits will inevitably recede to the flat numbers from before Trump when he leaves the White House, whether that’s in 2021 or 2025. But what’s less prone to election cycles is people’s memory and anger toward corruption and conspiring against a frontrunner, which is where former journalists Chris Matthews and Chuck Todd enter the fray.Mr. Todd will need to face reality at some point to figure out his confusion of how Bernie is the frontrunner in the Democratic primary race. But what will be even more damaging to MSNBC’s long-term reputation is the constant smears of progressive candidates and their supporters. If anyone from the progressive camp even thought about comparing a politician to the Nazis, the establishment would pile on with endless criticism. But when not one but TWO MSNBC anchors compared Bernie’s rise — who himself is Jewish and whose family were murdered by the Nazis — to the Nazis invading France, the shocking reality of how low some centrists will stoop to stop Bernie is disgusting. After Matthews’ hollow apology and an accusation of sexual harassment by GQ columnist Laura Bassett, MSNBC pulled Matthews from its coverage of the South Carolina primary on Saturday. But the damage has been done. Thank the lord for Anand Giridharadas, because until MSNBC overhauls its roster of lobbyists, its reputation will remain stained. Can We Stop Climate Change and Keep Capitalism?Francesca has traveled to all parts of America over the past few years for various reporting and joke making. I asked her what issue has been underreported in the media, and her response was climate change, still. Lots of reasons can explain why, despite institutions including the UN declaring a climate emergency, the climate crisis is still not taken seriously enough. Perhaps the most telling reason is that most people don’t feel they’re affected by climate change (they are) and hence the likes of healthcare and the economy (still important) continue to dominate headlines. But that’s what many outlets are missing: Climate change is making healthcare more expensive and costing the economy billions of dollars each year. Which brings us onto our next topic: Is capitalism responsible for the climate emergency? The answer is yes, or no, depending on who you ask, but neither answer is as simple as a single syllable. It’s certainly no coincidence that the rise in the world’s emissions coincides with the explosion of globalisation that’s sent our obsession with economic growth through the roof. We’ve all played a part in fuelling capitalism, with or without knowing the implications on the environment. That’s undeniable. But where the argument becomes more nuanced, is how to escape the mess… I don’t have the answer to that, sorry. Thanks for reading this week. The Backwards Law Have you ever wanted something so bad and didn't get it? Ever look for a boyfriend or girlfriend so much and find no one or the opposite of what you were looking for? How about desperately needing a job and getting no callbacks after going to multiple interviews? A man named Alan Watts who was a great speaker back in the 60s and 70s came up with the term “backwards law” or “law of reverse effort”. Basically what this means is the more you try to escape, prevent, remove or stop the negative experiences of life, the more negative the negative becomes. When you focus your attention so hard on what you want or essentially LACK, you end up pushing away what you want and attracting more of what you lack. Look at it this way, have you ever tried to think of a song, a word or a name and you KNOW you know it but it just won't come to you? You try and try to remember but it doesn't come. So, you let it go. 2, 5, 10 or 30 minutes later BOOM it pops into your mind. WHY??? The answer is simple - you let go. You stopped trying to force it to come to you and when you did, it showed up. That is just an example, but this law goes much deeper than trying to remember a song. The desire to constantly be in a state of happiness can and does actually lead to more unhappiness. The desire to be in a state of happiness is really telling yourself that you ARE NOT happy NOW. So this state of unhappiness becomes deeper and deeper the more you try and remove it Wanting something so bad can actually prevent you from getting it. So much of wanting is really living in the space of what you DON'T have. So what is the solution? Acceptance for what is. I know this answer is NOT attractive at all. But it is true. There is a time for everything in our lives. A time for love, a time for laughter, a time for happiness, sadness, loss, suffering and more. This IS LIFE. When you can accept what is you open the door for what could be. Resisting what is only creates more turmoil and suffering. Gratitude. Here we are again speaking about gratitude. Being grateful for even the smallest things in your life allows for more things to enter your life. Being in a state of gratitude will help you look at more and more things as a blessing rather than a curse. Letting go. Put what you desire out into the world and let it go. Often times we get caught up in the HOW. How is this or that going to happen? MInd your business! That is not of your concern. How something manifests is irrelevant to you. A lot of times you need to get out of the way and trust the process. 32LAUNCH 3.Believe. Belief in yourself is so powerful. Believe that you have that thing you want. Imagine yourself with it, what does it feel like, to have it or to be it? 2.Act as if you have, its yours and you are. This strengthens your belief even more. Act like the person you want to be, act like you have the thing you desire. 1.Let it go! Allow God/Universe to do their job. Don't get caught up in the how of things. Trust God.
