What gets centred and what gets framed as marginal? Who decides? And what are the consequences? UN expert, feminist scholar and social historian Rhoda Reddock – Professor Emerita at The University of the West Indies – joins us from Trinidad and Tobago to discuss the theme of margins, reflecting on the importance of radical Caribbean thought, the contested meaning of the “global south” and the evolution and significance of Caribbean feminism from the 70s to today. As a member of the UN's Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), Rhoda shares her reflections of moving between Switzerland and Trinidad and Tobago for her work. She also gives advice to scholars striving to make an impact – and to those questioning the necessity of moving to the “global north”. Why, Rhoda asks, does scholarship from the “global south” too often get perceived as regionally specific, while the “north” remains regarded as the centre of sociological thought? And how, Rosie and Alexis ask, has the Caribbean typically been regarded – or indeed, dismissed – by the discipline?Plus: Rhoda also shines a spotlight on Trinidadian-American scholar Oliver C. Cox, author of “Caste, Class and Race”, whose work was a precursor to Wallerstein's “World Systems Theory” and also to women's studies today. A fascinating discussion, also featuring celebration of thinkers including CLR James and Walter Rodney, author of “How Europe Underdeveloped Africa”.Guest: Rhoda ReddockHosts: Rosie Hancock, Alexis Hieu TruongExecutive Producer: Alice BlochSound Engineer: David CracklesMusic: Joe GardnerArtwork: Erin AnikerFind more about Uncommon SenseEpisode ResourcesBy Rhoda ReddockRadical Caribbean Social ThoughtWomen and Slavery in the Caribbean“Conceptualizing ‘Difference' in Caribbean Feminist Theory” in New Caribbean ThoughtRhoda's online profileFrom the Sociological Review FoundationEuropeans, with Manuela Boatcă – Uncommon Sense podcast episodeGlobal Sociology – online magazine essay collectionDecolonising Methodologies, 20 Years On: The Sociological Review Annual Lecture – Linda Tuhiwai SmithFurther resourcesThe UN's Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW)“North-South: A Programme for Survival” – Willy Brandt“Southern Theory: The global dynamics of knowledge in social science” – Raewyn Connell“How Europe Underdeveloped Africa” – Walter Rodney“Caste, Class and Race: A Study in Social Dynamics” – Oliver C. Bio: My name is Michael Alexander but go by Michael Davincii. I'm from Pennsylvania but I've lived in New York since 2014 on and off. I'm Trinidadian American 29, and I'm a Gay Podcaster. I went to college at Berkeley where I studied International Business. Once I left college I ended up landing a job working for a interior design company called Bo-Concept literally scraping pennies I got into reselling exclusive sneakers such as Yeezy',s, exclusive Jordan's and rare collaborative footwear. Hanging out in soho and hanging around Upper echelon creatives where I found that I had a love for creativity. I ended up being a stylist assistant for Sincere with pulling for artist such as Meek Mill, Rich the Kid, and Jay Critch. In my free time I would listen to podcasts such as Joe Buddens podcast, Call her Daddy podcast, and Sofia with a F podcast. I loved the problematic, anti conservativeness, debative conversations they would have. Before I was listening to podcasts I was really inspired by Anderson Cooper and Don Lenon from CNN. But it wasn't until the beginning of the Coronavirus Pandemic where I picked up a. Mic and decided I wanted to be heard. This is where I felt most sexually liberated and free due to the the lockdown I did a lot of soul searching but didn't know how to talk with it compromising any work that I wanted to do. After a bunch of failed attempts with trying to do the podcast I decided to go solo and call it the D. A.M.N. Podcast aka the Don't Ask Me Nothin Podcast. In the podcast I talk about gay liberation, dating while black, dating outside your race, std and sti prevention, sex positively, being an upscale escort, endless party life with sex drugs and alcohol and things that had happened to me while living in New York City. I made a polecats to bring awareness as well as fill in the gap between heterosexuals and homosexuals. By the time he was 10 years old Wendel Patrick was a seasoned traveler. The Trinidadian-American came to the states after time in other Caribbean countries and even a stint in South America (fun fact: you can see the shores of Venezuela from his family's home country). No matter where he was, music was a constant in his life. His father was an audiophile and Wendel observed the care and patience his dad practiced when tending to his vinyl collection. As Wendel got older, he demonstrated an astonishing proficiency for music and pursued music as a profession. Listen as Wendel talks about his beginnings in music training, how the sound of a piano while attending Emory University brought him back to music, and why "it takes what it takes" when he creates his projects.

Bohr was also a philosopher and a promoter of scientific research. Bohr developed the Bohr model of the atom, in which he proposed that energy levels of electrons are discrete and that the electrons revolve in stable orbits around the atomic nucleus but can jump from one energy level (or orbit) to another. Although the Bohr model has been supplanted by other models, its underlying principles remain valid. He conceived the principle of complementarity: that items could be separately analysed in terms of contradictory properties, like behaving as a wave or a stream of particles. The notion of complementarity dominated Bohr's thinking in both science and philosophy. He predicted the existence of a new zirconium-like element, which was named hafnium, after the Latin name for Copenhagen, where it was discovered. Later, the element bohrium was named after him. He was involved with the establishment of CERN and the Research Establishment Risø of the Danish Atomic Energy Commission and became the first chairman of the Nordic Institute for Theoretical Physics in 1957. Host Alice Backer of www.kiskeacity.com and Michelle Materre, founder of Creatively Speaking Film Series and host of Creativey Speaking on the Air welcome Bruce Paddington, maker of the documentary Forward Ever. The film investigates the Grenadian revolution of 1979 which culminated in the killing of Maurice Bishop and several of his colleagues in 1983. (Bruce is with us for the first half hour.) We are then joined by Trinidadian-American trade unionist Roger Toussaint and cultural activist Martin Felix, who came of age in Grenada during the revolution, to explore aspects of this oft neglected chapter of Caribbean history. How was this movement for self-determination launched in the pre-social media era? Why did Reagan take exception to the building of an international airport in Grenada? Did US involvement start at the post-killing invasion or was the Grenadian movement for self-determination infiltrated and destabilized? Originally aired on Creatively Speaking On the Air June 18, 2014. Forward Ever will be screening FREE Friday June 20 at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn at 6PM and again at 4PM Saturday June 21 at Maisles Theater in Harlem.
