With David as the example, Joey spoke to how our lives are also full of different pains and sufferings, overall trauma. He then went on to speak to the common ways many react to trauma that can be detrimental as well as recommended truth on how we as faithful believers should respond to the trauma we experience, both individually and most especially within the community.

Following our first conversation with David Fauchier (Portfolio Manager at Nickel Digital Asset Management), he insisted that we had to speak with Thomas Braziel, Founder and CIO of 507 Capital, who he claimed was one of the most interesting and independently-minded investors he had met in the digital asset space. With David as co-host, our awesome conversation with Thomas covered topics such as: Why almost all his stories begin with a bankruptcy Opportunities that don't scale tend to offer the juiciest returns The reason some of these trades work is precisely because they are not scalable His perspective on the Mt. Gox debacle and why he has been buying claims on it for years Claims investing – why many distressed assets fly under the radar of most allocators His unique investment style – if Soros and Buffet had an ‘investment love child' Different models for claims investing – from complex factoring to ‘loon shot buccaneering' Getting along with all the players in the space can be a form of alpha We went deep into the inner workings of the space, including how different countries treat personal liabilities in bankruptcies, the contrasts between English Common Law and the US legal system, and what it means to go ‘forum shopping'. Yet another highly entertaining and educational episode and we hope you enjoy it. Thank you for watching and listening. There is a Way Text: 1 Samuel 17: 32-49 T.C. Morrow June 20, 2021 Foundry United Methodist Church, Washington DC We are in the middle of a sermon series on “The Call: Good Trouble.”  Last week Pastor Ginger spoke on a passage earlier in the book of 1 Samuel, the identification of David as the one God has picked out to be the king.  Picking the eighth and youngest son of a not particularly remarkable family is an unexpected choice.  Yet God again and again throughout our scriptures empowers leaders who defy societal expectations for leadership. The late Representative John Lewis used the phrase “good trouble” to refer to activities for positive social change that push against unjust social norms or laws.  With pressure to follow the racist policies of the Jim Crow South, Rep. Lewis remembered his parents saying when he asked about “white only” signs, “That's the way it is, don't get in the way, don't get in trouble.”  But inspired by leaders like Dr. King and Rosa Parks, Rep. Lewis says he did get in trouble, in “good trouble.”  Today we continue the story of the young David, his community under threat and divine inspiration for David to get involved. Let us pray: May the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer. Amen. “The Lord who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.”   The audacity to imagine that you can go from tending sheep to besting the biggest, strongest warrior in the Philistine army.  It's improbable, it's impossible.  The young David beating the experienced and physically stronger Goliath?  No way. Yet there is a way.  For David there is a way through a leader who finally accepts young David's offer but then tries to push the leader's own way for how to proceed, and a way through an opponent who seemingly has every advantage. For you and for me, there is a way.  Whatever the obstacles, there is a way “to resist evil, injustice, and oppression in whatever forms they present themselves” as we are called to in our baptismal vows.  It may not be in our time, it may not be how we want it, it surely will not be easy.  But through the power of the Holy Spirit there is always a way to turn those places where we are outraged over “that's the way it is” into the next faithful step in being the body of Christ in the world. In whatever situations where we are called to be about #GoodTrouble, God is with us drawing on our experiences and providing the tools and resources to face our obstacles.  As we look at today's text, you're welcome to have out your Bible or Bible App to 1 Samuel 17.  Let's see what David encounters and what we might learn for our own journeys. The stories of David in the books of 1 & 2 Samuel help the Israelites tell the story of their beginnings as a more cohesive entity from multiple tribes.  Importantly these books of the Bible show later generations the role of God in the lives of their ancestors, and therefore give hope that God is with them as well.  Like the passage last week of Samuel's anointing of David, this story of David and Goliath shows that Yahweh -- “the Lord” as translated in the New Revised Standard Version -- Yahweh is with the unlikely protagonist David.  David has been sent by his father with food for his brothers who are part of Saul's army facing the Philistines, a main external opponent to the Israelites in the narrative of 1 & 2 Samuel.  One of the Philistines, Goliath, has offered to fight a representative of the Israelites.  40 days – or a really long time – go by and no one from amongst the Israelites goes forward.  Goliath is described as tall and decked out with heavy armor (he's gotten called a giant, but the point is that he is a formidable, seasoned warrior).   As we pick up the story in verse 32, young David, fresh from tending the sheep flocks and serving as the food delivery service of the day, offers to be the one to go fight Goliath.  The reply is hardly a surprise.  The Israelite leader, Saul, dismissively says, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him; for you are just a boy, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”  David is confronted with Saul's lack of imagination for an outside the box solution even as apparently no one else is equipped to fight Goliath one-on-one. How many times have we heard: you're not the right age, you don't have the right degree, you're not the right fit. David might have given in to the dismissal but instead he asserts his credentials and trust in God.  In the course of his shepherding duties, he has saved lambs from bears and lions.  Fuller examination of the word “saved” here is for another sermon or perhaps your own study this week, but I'll note that it runs along the lines of delivered from or snatched away from.  David is convicted that it is through the power of a saving God that he has been brought through his prior experiences with fearsome foes and likewise God will be with him this time as he faces Goliath.     “The Lord, who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.”  David assesses the situation and knows he can offer himself.  God has equipped him for just such a moment.  God empowers us to draw on our own particular strengths and abilities for the sake of Kindom-building.  In return, we are called to trust that God will continue to carry us through. With David's clear articulation of readiness, Saul finally agrees that David can be the one to go out against Goliath.  Saul says, “Go, and may the Lord be with you!”  However, even as he seems to understand Yahweh's presence with David, Saul clings to what he knows and remains blind to the true gift of service that David is offering.  As Walter Brueggeman says, “Saul does not understand anything.  He has uttered Yahweh's name.  But he wants to outdo Goliath on Goaliath's terms...”  Saul foolishly tries to make David into the type of warrior that he knows about - fits him up in armor and a helmet and a sword.  However, for David, armor and a sword are not the tools he knows; they are not where God has given him strength.  David tries to walk around, but unable to do so he casts aside the amor.  In this, David reminds us that we need to resist bending to other people's expectations and norms when they are not what will allow us to best use our God-given talents and passions and convictions.  When facing the Goliath's of our lives, we must remember with confidence that God has been nurturing and shaping us since the day we were born.  Let God's prevenient grace be what is molding you, not the dictates of other's unholy expectations. As we look at this passage, I must mention that there will likely be times when we are in Saul's place.  Let Saul's failure in his hasty attempt to shape David into a warrior serve as a warning.  We must avoid trying to mold others into “our image.”  Teaching and mentorship are one thing.  Demanding that there is only one way to live, insisting there is only one way to fight for justice will lead to failure every time.  We need to honor how every human being is made in the image of God.  We need to honor how we are called to bring our full beings and God-given gifts to the places where we find ourselves for the sake of the transformation of the world.   David resists Saul's attempts to control things.  David gathers 5 smooth stones and goes to face Goliath with tools that give him an advantage, his sling and his practiced arm.  Goliath comes with trash talk, but David responds with the claim that Yahweh has equipped David to meet Goliath and indeed to gain victory.  With the skills that he has honed as a shepherd, David does the unthinkable and overcomes Goliath's greater physical strength.   And so ends 40 days of Goliath coming out every day to challenge the Israelites.  A young shepherd comes along, assured that God will be with him just like God has been with him before.  God has not only provided the young shepherd with tools and resources to help his community but the discernment to know when they can be put to good use. This June as we mark Pride month we also celebrate the anniversaries of several landmark Supreme Court decisions impacting LGBTQ people.  A year ago the Court held that “an employer who fires an individual merely for being gay or transgender violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”  One of the cases involved in that decision was that of Aimee Stephens, a trans woman who was fired after she told her employer that she would be transitioning from male to female.  Aimee sought to live openly as who she was and continue in her profession, instead she lost her livelihood.   In a January 2020 interview with NBC, when asked about her feelings in advance of a decision, she said, “We're going to keep fighting regardless of what the decision is.”  Aimee was someone willing to get in #GoodTrouble.  She was seeking to authentically live her life and ended up becoming an activist, apparently quite accidentally.  Instead of taking an offered severance package she contacted the ACLU of Michigan.  She knew there was a way to fight the bigotry she faced, but there were true costs as well.  As she also noted in that NBC interview, “It is my life, but it's also a lot of other people's lives”   Aimee Stephens stepped up when an opportunity that none of us would ask for presented itself.  She took the opportunity to fight the injustice of her firing and the effects will be felt in our country for years to come. When you look around your community, your workplace, your family, the world, where is God calling you?  Where is God calling you to get into some #GoodTrouble? If you are not sure where God is calling you, I encourage you to set apart some time to be in prayer.  Set apart some time to reflect on where you see brokenness and are nudged to think, “Hey, I've got this, with God I've got this!”  There will be opportunities when you are paying attention to the world around you and all the ways that God has already provided you with tools and resources.  People will try to get you off track, but I encourage you to remain confident in where God has already been with you and where you feel complete trust that God will be with you again.  It may seem completely improbable, but you might be the one that brings just that slightly different perspective or experience that can get things moving. “The Lord who saved me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, will save me from the hand of this Philistine.”  The Gospels tell time and again of Jesus breaking the boundaries of “that's the way it is” thinking.  He eats with and talks to and heals people that others deem unclean.  Jesus drives out the money changers from the Temple, interrupting a financial system taking advantage of worshippers coming in from out of town.   With all the brokenness and evil of this world, the good news is that we do not have to be stuck. We don't have to be stuck in our personal lives.  We don't have to be stuck in our collective life.  We are called to follow Jesus in bringing fullness of life to all the places that need it, from the front steps of our church, to kitchen tables, to corporate offices, to the Oval Office.   May God continue to shape you and shape me. May God continue to surprise us with unexpected grace and opportunities. May God continue to equip leaders with the right skills for the moment to step forward. With God, there is a way! Wherever, whenever you find yourself responding to God's call to #GoodTrouble, as Saul said to David, “Go, and may the Lord be with you!” Amen. https://foundryumc.org/

About a month ago, Damany came to David Rodriguez (AKA Dr Gorilla) with an idea- to create a pop-up, drive-through, holiday arts experience that married massive murals, technology, large scale sculptural installations, and live entertainment and presented it in a massively public, but completely safe and "Pandemic Friendly" way. What was born out of that was tinsel Dallas, a brand new immersive arts experience that highlighted and celebrated the unique culture and inherent dopeness of West Dallas, and brought it to life through the eyes of some of Dallas' most respected artists. With David at the helm as the co-producer, this brand new experience shattered expectations during its two evening run, welcoming almost 1,500 people in just 8 hours. A multi-medium artist, David prides himself on not only his ability to create, but also his ability to facilitate creation and to provide platforms for other artists to walk more fully in their passions. In tinsel, David's expertise in this shone bright. We talk comics as a language, graffiti as an art form, and tattoos of Byron's face- all in just over an hour. As The Castle Hunter, from his base in Edinburgh, David C. Weinczok has visited over 400 castles, all over Scotland, sometimes even pushing his way through brambles, thistles and midges, just to reach a small pile of stones that was once a castle. With David as a guide, you begin to see through the majestic, insta filtered view of Scotland’s famous castles, lone sentries on hilltops, or marooned on lonely islands. These are fantastic images, obviously, and they adorn every website extolling the virtues of Scotland (including this one). But there’s something not quite right about that hyper-exoticised view. And the truth that lies behind it is more interesting, if less immediately accessible than a great shot of Eilean Donan with Hefe on max.“One myth to bust straight away is the idea of the solitary tower standing defiant against the landscape. The reality is that almost every castle was one part of a larger network, without which the castle could not have been built in the first place,” says DavidIn the podcast, Pete and Matt talk about Ardvreck, a castle they have visited but not understood, before David gives the wider context of castles in this part of the world. You can read more about David C. (1Cor.15:12-20;   Ps.17:1,6-8,15;   Lk.8:1-3)   “Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep.”   This is the heart of our faith.  This is the “Good News,” the Gospel preached in our midst.  This is our firm belief.  Upon it all our hopes stand.  Christ has been raised, and His disciples will follow Him.  As surely as we accompany Him here in His mission on earth, so surely will we find ourselves in His presence in heaven.  Dying in Him means rising in light. But “if our hopes in Christ are limited to this life only, we are the most pitiable of men.”  We could then be said to have truly wasted our time, for then the very heart of our faith would have been torn out, and what but scoffing would we have to hold?  A dead Christ we would carry in our arms, and we “the deadest of the dead” with Him. Paul speaks of this quite pointedly; he pulls no punches in this regard, declaring openly: “If Christ has not been raised, our preaching is void of content and your faith is empty too.”  Yet there are those today, as then, who “say there is no resurrection of the dead,” that “Christ was not raised” – and these would call themselves Christian.  And in the same manner there are many who do not truly believe the resurrection, yet wear the Christian nametag.  If we have doubt in our hearts, or, worse yet, if we preach against the core of the faith, what do we do but kill ourselves?  What do we do but work against the very Gospel of Christ?  And how then do we merit the name of Christian? Brothers and sisters, we must know in our hearts and be assured that Jesus is risen from the dead.  We must realize that God has “attend[ed] to [David's] outcry,” that He has “hearken[ed] to [his] prayer” – that the most urgent longing of our souls has been answered by the “savior of those who hope in [Him].”  With David, we of faith should say with his resolve: “On waking, I shall be content in your presence.”  Has the resurrection not been indicated in the “women who ha[ve] been cured of evil spirits and maladies” and who now accompany Jesus?  Does not Mary Magdalene, “from whom seven devils had gone out,” give clear example of hope in Christ fulfilled?  For she is not at all as she was, and this woman once so completely possessed by death itself is the first to see the Lord risen. We must know the resurrection in our lives on earth; this is the only way we will comprehend it in heaven.  Release from sin allows us to see already the eternal fruits of the kingdom.  Accompanying Him now, our sins behind us, already upon heaven's road we tread.  And we know of a certain we shall pass through these “towns and villages” even unto His kingdom.   ******* O LORD, your Son has been raised from the dead; may we be raised with Him and be at your side. YHWH, your Son is raised from the dead for us that we might enter your glorious presence.  Though in the shadow of the wings of the Cross on this earth we make our home, it but prepares us for the kingdom.  For even here our sins are taken away, and we come to new life in the Spirit. We cried out to you, O LORD, and you heard our voice and sent your Son to walk among us.  And if we follow in His steps we shall come to where He leads – we shall come to you.  The path He trod must be our own, for it is the way of salvation.  Through death on the Cross we come to life, for as we die with Him so we are raised. Let us rejoice in His resurrection, O LORD; let us have faith in the new life at work in us even this day, and look with hope to our place in your kingdom.  On waking may we look upon your face and be content in your eternal presence.  For your glory let us ever strive, giving all to you as we walk in your way.

Feeling Good Podcast | TEAM-CBT - The New Mood Therapy

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2020 44:58

Today we feature a brilliant and beloved colleague, Dr. Alex Clarke. At the start of today’s podcast, Alex describes his unexpected journey from psychoanalysis / psychodynamic therapy to TEAM, but discovered that TEAM can actually be viewed as a type of psychoanalytic therapy. In fact, the two fathers of cognitive therapy, Albert Ellis, PhD, and Aaron Beck, MD, began their careers as psychoanalysts. They were simply looking for specific techniques to help their patients develop rapid and tangible change, and not just understanding that unfolds over a period of years. David and Alex discuss some of the surprising overlaps between TEAM and psychodynamic therapy, as well as some of the striking differences. Similarities Changing the Focus: Often there’s tension in the room, especially during therapy sessions. When you bring it to conscious awareness in a kindly way, it will often lead to therapeutic breakthrough. The Relationship Journal: This is a rapid way to highlight the recurring patterns that cause conflicts in intimate relationships. Interpersonal Downward Arrow: This is a high-speed version of psychoanalysis which reveals your “core conflict” in ten minutes, as compared with five years on the analyst’s couch. Hidden Emotion Technique: This is the idea that anxious individuals are overly “nice” and feel they have to suppress certain kinds of positive or negative feelings, which then emerge, in disguised form as some type of anxiety, such as chronic worrying, a phobia, a panic attack, OCD, and so forth. Differences T = Testing techniques: Most analysts are dead set against testing, thinking it will somehow hurt or ruin the “transference.” TEAM therapists are convinced it is difficult, if not impossible, to do good therapy without session by session assessments to track how patients feel, and how they feel about the therapist. E = Empathy training and methods: TEAM therapists get highly accurate and sensitive empathy ratings after every session from every patient. Many therapists get failing grades from most patients at most sessions. The patient’s criticisms are not taken as evidence for the patient’s distortions of the relationships, but rather as valid indicators of the therapist’s actual errors. This information is used to deepen the therapeutic relationship. A = Assessment of resistance: Freud devoted his career to understanding and trying to solve the puzzle of resistance—but his free association on the couch was not terribly effective. TEAM therapists bring subconscious resistance to conscious awareness quickly, and melt it away rapidly with a variety of techniques. This opens the door to the possibility of ultra-rapid recovery. M = Methods: TEAM therapists use more than 100 methods drawn from more than a dozen schools of therapy. The therapist and patient work together collaboratively to solve specific problems, and homework between sessions in mandatory. Alex’s current passions span a broad range of mental health treatment, and as a result, provide lots of great opportunities for fun and collaboration with David, as well as the rest of the TEAM community. Clinical work: Alex sees patients three days per week, using TEAM and occasionally medications if needed. Training / teaching: He teaches with David and several other experienced TEAM therapists at David’s weekly training group at Stanford. The Feeling Great app: Alex is assisting David and Jeremy Karmel in the process of making TEAM Therapy accessible to everyone as an electronic app. The app will include real-life examples bringing the techniques to life along with step-by-step instructions for how to put techniques into action. Putting these powerful psychotherapy ideas and methods in patients’ hands provides an exciting opportunity to accelerate healing and augment therapy, since the tool can be assigned as homework between therapy sessions. Also, when patients get stuck with topics in the app, they can discuss these with their therapists, deepen their understanding, and bring them to life through role-plays, etc. Statistical modeling: With David’s mentoring, Alex is working to learn data analytic and statistical modeling methods that can help investigators explore and understand how effective psychotherapy actually works. Measurement and Search: Alex has joined David’s son, Erik, on the exciting mission of promoting measurement-based and feedback-informed treatment as the standard of care in mental health. They are currently in the final phases of developing and rolling out an electronic system for use by therapists and patients to assess mood before, after, and between therapy sessions in order to assess changes in therapy as well as relapses between sessions. This system will provide unique insights for clinicians as well as patients about what’s helping, what’s not helping. The tool will also have a search-engine celebrating clinicians who commit use measurement consistently in their clinical work and will help patients find clinicians with outstanding skills in the areas where they need help. Alex was born in Seattle and grew up splitting his time between the east and west coast. Alex went to high school and college in North Carolina and played in a band for several years after finishing college. He also worked in restaurants, real estate, audio engineering, and even owned a vending machine business for several years! He’s always been a giant outdoors enthusiast, loving to hike, ski, climb, and surf. When Alex went to medical school, he planned to become an emergency room physician because of his love for adventure and wilderness. During medical school, Alex fell in love with the operating room and almost decided to become a surgery resident. However, during a summer research internship, Alex became increasingly interested in neuroscience and began devouring literature on consciousness and emotion research, as well as the brain-machine interface. When he discovered psychiatry during his clinical rotations, he was sold. Psychotherapy struck him as particularly awe-inspiring and he decided to dedicate himself to its learning and practice. In his final year of medical school, Alex traveled around the country doing rotations at medical centers across the US in an effort to learn how mental healthcare is practiced in different settings and regions. He searched broadly for psychotherapy mentors and feels wildly lucky to have found Dr. David Burns during his residency at Stanford. During residency, Alex trained in several different schools of psychotherapy, including advanced psychodynamic training with the SFCP (San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis). As he puts it “there are lots of metaphors for human experiences, but all of these schools for some reason feel a need to use their own jargon, which can sometimes be off-putting or confusing.” I, David, would add that I agree with this 200%. For example, there is a concept called “projective identification.” For years I felt intimidated by this term and couldn’t figure out what it meant! Then someone explained it to me, and for a brief moment, I “got it.” But now, I again have no idea what it means! Alex decided that understandable language was important and discovered that Dr. Burns had been developing “common language” for important psychotherapy ideas as well as a framework for understanding how effective treatment works. Alex loved this and decided to join David is his mission of translating essential psychological and philosophical ideas into practical, usable healing techniques. One of things that Alex expresses that he admires most about David is his strength in taking complex ideas and bringing them down to a simple, digestible, human level. I, David, would add that I love working with Alex, and have learned so much from him, both in terms of the numerous technical discoveries and amazing breakthroughs that have evolved in our research, but I have also learned a little about the incredible value of humility and “selflessness” from this kindly gentle giant! I, Rhonda, would liked to add that I also love working with Alex.  I admire his kind soul, his gentle disposition, and his perceptive mind. Rhonda and I feel extremely lucky to be working with Dr. Alex! Rhonda and David Dr. Alex Clarke can be reached at: 650-382-2090, alex@clarkemd.com   Alex is available by video appointment for anyone located anywhere in the state of California.  He provides psychiatric evaluations, TEAM psychotherapy, and medication management for any condition, so don't hesitate to reach out to him by phone or email anytime to discuss evaluation/consultation options or treatment needs.  He is also available to clinicians for TEAM case consultation.   Thank you!!!

(Amos 3:1-8,4:11-12;   Ps.5:4-9;   Mt.8:23-27) “The lion roars – who will not be afraid! The Lord God speaks – who will not prophesy!” Yes, the Lord prophesies against Israel today like a lion rending and roaring: “You alone have I favored, more than all the families of the earth; therefore I will punish you for all your crimes.”  He brings upon His chosen “such upheaval as when God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah: [they are] like a brand plucked from the fire.”  In no uncertain terms does He cry out through Amos – “Prepare to meet your God, O Israel.” A frightening prospect indeed it is which is presented to us in our readings.  Here is the Lord God coming to take vengeance on His people.  This is He before whom “no evil man remains,” who “destroy[s] all who speak falsehood.”  And against His own who turn from Him, He reserves greater punishment. How shall we react, we who are now become His chosen children?  What should we do before such an awesome prospect as the Lord's hand coming with power?  With David we should “bring [our] plea expectantly before [Him]”; with the disciples we should make “our way toward Him” and call out: “Lord, save us!  We are lost!”  And if we have the faith and humility of the Lord's king, who declares, “I, because of your abundant kindness, will enter your house; I will worship at your holy temple in fear of you, O Lord,” then with his same confidence we may believe that the Lord will wake and take “the winds and the sea to task” – that what besets us because of our sin and separation from Him will be appeased by the same voice which threatens our destruction thereby.  For indeed the Lord is abundantly kind and speaks to us as His own, and chastises us as His own.  He raises His voice that we might return to Him; He places us in the fire that we might be purged.  Let us find our strength in a holy fear.     And let us join His voice.  Let us call out with Him to His blessed children, that all might return to Him who is their maker and protector – that all might be rescued from harm.  The Lord would not see us caught in the snare laid for the wicked, and so He has sent His only Son to appease the wrath He has justly spoken forth.  Let the lion's mouth not close upon our heads, but may we be awakened by its voice and open our own mouths to declare the mercy of our God. ******* O LORD, the wind and the sea obey your Son, but we harden our hearts against Him – O let us heed His voice! YHWH, even wind and sea obey you, and so we call upon your NAME to be saved from their clutches.  Let not our sins overwhelm us, but bring us the grace of your salvation. LORD, we deserve your just punishment, for we have stubbornly turned our hearts from you.  Though you have been kind in watching over and protecting us from harm, we have not recognized your goodness toward us and praised your NAME;  instead, we have turned to other gods and walked in the wickedness of our hearts.  And so, what can you do but cry out against us; and so, what can we be but destroyed if we do not heed your voice? Give us courage, LORD, for our strength fails us.  All we can see is the turmoil our weakness brings upon us.  Help us to see beyond the troubles the world presents, troubles we have brought upon ourselves, that we might see you and your power at work, and place all our faith therein.  O let us listen to your prophets as they cry out and so walk your way in peace and light, despite the surrounding darkness.

(Acts 1:12-14;   Ps.27:1,4,7-8,13;   1Pt.4:13-16;   Jn.17:1-11a)   “One thing I ask of the Lord; this I seek: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life.”   Obedient to the instructions of the Lord, the apostles returned to Jerusalem, where they gathered together in “the upper room” and “devoted themselves with one accord to prayer,” waiting for the promised gift of the Spirit of God.  With David they long to “gaze on the loveliness of the Lord and contemplate His temple,” and so, with him they sing, “Of you my heart speaks, you my glance seeks.” The Pentecost is soon to come; the Spirit shall soon fall upon the apostles and fulfill their longing for union with God.  But as they wait, they suffer, as do we all, for waiting means to suffer – finding patience is to share in the passion of Christ, in the absolute subjection of our wills to the Father and so the death of our own ways.  But Peter's words come as comfort to us as we ourselves wait for the glory of God to come to us: “Beloved: Rejoice to the extent that you share in the sufferings of Christ, so that when His glory is revealed you may also rejoice exultantly.”  He knows of what he speaks.  For his patient waiting, his dying to self, has been rewarded by the gift of the Spirit now with him as he speaks…  and each day his continued suffering brings renewed joy.  He is able to sing with full voice the words of David's psalm: “The Lord is my life's refuge; of whom should I be afraid?”  And to such fullness of the glory of God we all should come. In our gospel Jesus calls down the glory of the Father upon Himself and so, in turn, upon all who love Him, that He may “give eternal life to all [the Father] gave Him.”  As the Son has glorified the Father on earth, now He seeks to be glorified by Him in heaven, and not for His own sake, but for the benefit of those who listen as He prays to His Father.  In our midst He prays for us that the power of the Holy Spirit might make us one with Him as He is one with the Father, that we might share in the glory of God. “Now this is eternal life, that they should know you, the only true God, and the one whom you sent, Jesus Christ.”  “Out of the world” He calls us, away from its darkness He brings us, that “in the world” we may be, sharing His glory with all… so to find eternal life, so to find ourselves in the hand of God, in His Temple, gazing always upon the light of His face.  Alleluia! Written, read & chanted, and produced by James Kurt. Music: "There Is No End to Life" (second part) from Thoroughfare, seventh album of Songs for Children of Light, by James Kurt. ******* O LORD, if we remain devoted to prayer and to carrying the Cross, we shall rejoice forever in your House.  YHWH, how we wait for your glory.  How we pray we shall be ready to receive the fullness of your gift from on high.  The Spirit promised your chosen ones be upon us this day to lead us to the glory of your Temple. O LORD, give us light that we might see, that we might gaze on your loveliness, that we might contemplate your presence.  To eternal life let us come.  Through the persecutions of this world, through our sharing in the Cross of the Christ, let your Spirit rest upon us and we be joined to your glory. It is Jesus' desire that we be joined to Him, that we be with Him in your glory.  He prays for us as we pray for your Spirit to come and anoint us with that glory.  Hear our prayers, O LORD.  May Mary and all your holy apostles pray for us as well, that together our prayers might rise unto you and we rise with them to eternal life.

(Lv.19:1-2,17-18;   Ps.103:1-4,8,10,12-13;   1Cor.3:16-23;   Mt.5:38-48)   “Be holy, for I, the Lord, your God, am holy.”   In the Book of Leviticus God says, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” and this is good.  But in the gospel Jesus adds, “Love your enemies” – and this is better.  In the old law we are commanded, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against any of your people”; but in the new we hear, “Offer no resistance to anyone who is evil,” and even, “Pray for those who persecute you.”  For now it is revealed that all are God's children, and so all must be loved as brothers. “Is this wise?” you say, to love our enemies.  “Is this not foolishness?”  Indeed the wisdom of the world would call it so, but we are called to “become a fool, so as to become wise” in the eyes of God.  For what the Lord calls us to in this is no less than to be like Him, to become the very “temple of God” where “the Spirit of God dwells.”  “Merciful and gracious is the Lord,” and so are we called to be.  “Not according to our sins does He deal with us,” and so we should not deal with others according to theirs.  Our “Father has compassion on His children,” and we must have the same for all. Has any of you put the words of the Lord into practice?  Has anyone sought to discover such love?  If you have then you know the glory it holds, the glory of a love which surpasses all.  And though justice is not wanting for those who reject it, His love cannot but be poured upon all. O the happiness of the soul that receives such grace!  Oh the joy of him who knows the blessing of such utter sacrifice!  What greater blessing can there be than to “be perfect, just as [our] heavenly Father is perfect”?  With David the soul alight with God's love sings: “Bless the Lord, O my soul; and all my being, bless His holy name.”  With Mary the Mother of God our soul proclaims His greatness as we come to know “all His benefits” in the service of His love.  And our transgressions are put far from us; and the Lord's grace abounds within us – and like His Son do we become, who upon the cross forgave even those who nailed Him to this tree.  Brothers and sisters, no greater love will we ever find.  It is this gift of holiness our Lord calls us to this day.  Let us love as He.   Written, read & chanted, and produced by James Kurt.   Music: "True Love" from Loving Spirit, third album of Songs for Children of Light, by James Kurt.   ******* O LORD, how shall we be holy as you are holy if we do not love as you love?  YHWH, you have redeemed our lives from destruction; you have not judged us according to our sins but looked upon us with compassion, offering forgiveness for our crimes, for you are love and mercy itself.  And you call us to be like you. If we are to be your Temple, O LORD, if we are to reflect your glory, then we must go beyond the desire to strike those who strike us, to answer evil with evil.  We must learn to listen to the blessed words of your Son and love our enemies, and pray for those who persecute us… for only then will we come to know you, to be like you, who love us as we strike you repeatedly on the cheek, who ever open your arms to all your prodigal sons.  We must transcend our own minds to find the surpassing grace and wisdom only you know. Blessed be your holy NAME, O LORD!  Let us be holy as you are holy!  Let us heed the wisdom of your Son, who calls us to eternal love.

(1Mac.6:1-13;   Ps.9:2-4,6,16,19;   Lk.20:27-40)  “The needy shall not always be forgotten, nor shall the hope of the afflicted forever perish.” Death comes, yes.  Death is upon us and surrounds us in this world.  But the suffering we face in this life has its reward.  Jesus has brought redemption: He has been resurrected, and we with Him.  And this new life is eternal. It seemed the Israelites were doomed.  Antiochus had ruthlessly destroyed Jerusalem and the inhabitants of Judah.  All hope seemed lost.  But hope was not lost, and today we read of the return of the people to Jerusalem in strength and the defeat and death of their enemy, the king.  Now Antiochus has become “sick with grief because his designs ha[ve] failed.”  Now he is “overwhelmed with sorrow” as he sees the evils he has committed overtake him and finds himself dying “in bitter grief, in a foreign land.”  While in Jerusalem the Israelites celebrate and sing praise to God: “My enemies are turned back, overthrown and destroyed before you.” And now such redemption is made eternal in the Person of Jesus Christ.  What was but human and temporal, the fall and rise of empires and of temples, now becomes divine, now becomes everlasting in the coming of the Messiah in the flesh of God.  Yet with Him there is death – but after His crucifixion it shall be no more.  Yet with Him is new life – but with His resurrection it has no end.  Now “those judged worthy of a place in the age to come and of resurrection from the dead… become like angels and are no longer liable to death.”  In His death He destroys death: He makes it bereft of all power.  In His rising He draws all into the eternal presence of the Father.  Now “all are alive for Him.” Brothers and sisters, may any “floods of sorrow” which afflict us now because of our sins or by the oppression of our persecutors not overwhelm us in this day.  Let our sins be nailed to the cross with Him who is our salvation, and our hope of overcoming all the scourges of the evil one be made strong in the surpassing light of His glorious rising.  With David let us “declare all [the Lord's] wondrous deeds,” and our enemies will be left speechless. (I must note today that the city named for this evil king – Antioch – would soon become the place where the followers of Christ were called “Christians” for the first time; and that the seat of the state which would next oppress the people of God – Rome – is now the place from which the Chair of Peter reigns.  How God's redeeming Hand does work.) ******* O LORD, in Heaven we shall be as angels; let us not be weighed down by the cares of this earth. YHWH, turn back our enemies, we pray, the sins that grieve us in this dark place.  Let us not in exile die, but by your grace come to new life. O LORD, how we long for the day when we will no more be liable to death.  Like the angels of Heaven let us be; in the age to come let us make our home, leaving behind the vestiges of this vain world. For all we have done or spoken against you, let us be forgiven, O LORD.  From all the evils we have committed in Jerusalem, let us be washed clean.  Make your City holy this day, that to your NAME we might sing praise. Build up the walls round about us, dear God, that we might be protected from all the attacks of the enemy.  Give us arms to defend ourselves from their snares, and we shall declare your wondrous deeds.  O let us rise again with your Son!

David Kurth, CEO and head grower at U-Bud Cannabis Services helps brand new growers in the Toronto, Canada area get their feet wet with marijuana growing and have a successful first harvest! With cannabis being legalized nationwide in October 2018, you can imagine that there is lots of opportunity for an entrepreneurial grower like David to capitalize on his skills and knowledge while helping growers learn the ropes. I know I relied on my friends in much the same way, thankfully they didn’t charge me. Typically, David can visit his clients one or two times after the initial setup visit, and with the help of technology and a well laid out plan sees many of his customers have a bountiful first harvest. After that, they can renew the contract, purchase the equipment and continue on their own, or pull the equipment out. Currently, David is helping people grow their legal 4 plants in a 4x4 grow tent, with oversized carbon filter and exhaust fan. The lighting varies a bit between a 315w Ceramic metal halide or a full spectrum LED light, they do offer an advanced grow with 2 LED lights within the same tent. They also provide super soil and 2.5-gallon pots for each of the 4 plants. Providing donated seeds to each customer, he helps to get them germinated on the customer’s kitchen counter. Providing a complete tutorial to help them be successful is also a key component to the business’ success. With David’s business, he tries to keep the variables small and the things to pay attention to minimal. He has his new growers watch temperature and humidity to ensure the environment stays dialed in. Beyond that, he asks them for simple observational health of the plant. Color and shade of the leaves, any blemishes or signs of bugs, changes in the top of the dirt and any anomalies from one plant to the next. They also encourage having customers send pictures if they’re concerned about a plant and even have some setups with cameras within their tent.  What’s David’s advice for increasing yield off each plant? He suggests more lighting to his customers and putting those 2 LED lights in each tent to maximize the wattage and spectrum available to the plants. Typically, they don’t encourage plant training to new customers but work with a few experienced customers to teach them the sea of green technique. What’s David tell his customers about Integrated Pest Management? Keep your outdoor pests outdoors, and you’ll prevent them from being in your indoor garden. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure in their small setups. If there are signs of problems, he suggests an essential microbe spray, EM-1 from Stepwell Super Soil on the leaves to help with powdery mildew and bug prevention. What types of character traits does David love to set up a new grow for? For them, it’s as simple as following a process. They have simplified the first grow for customers so well that as long as they can follow directions, they see close to 100% success rate. After the first grow, he does help growers experiment a bit but encourages everyone to keep it simple and not to get too far ahead of their abilities. David’s parting words: don’t cheap out when purchasing equipment or accruing knowledge. Quality comes with a cost, but if it’s truly quality it will return dividends time after time.
