When Alex and I recorded together for episode two of the show back in 2017, she had no idea of the hurdles that lay ahead in her journey. My first-ever guest back in 2017, we recently agreed that it was time to have her back for round II. For episode 157, the New York-based trainer and "human" (listen to find out where that's coming from) is getting really vulnerable about the bumps in the road over the last few years, including falling in love (and then ending an engagement), leaving her job, and checking herself into a mental health facility at the end of 2020 — emerging from treatment with a new lease on life. She offers up her tips for anyone who can share in her struggle, we talk about the importance of having good relationships in life and how to set boundaries, and navigating spending time alone. The stuff we get into today is serious. I can't stress enough that this was a conversation we talked a lot about before having it, and our hope is that it opens up important discussions within our communities. I'm grateful to Alex for opening up, and I want to reiterate that if you struggle with your mental health – you are not alone. Online courses are so hot now especially with most of the world still stuck in their houses everyone is coming with the perspective of what are people interested in. However that is backwards. When you make your focus to make money you are stacking the odds massively against you. But when you come from within and you really discover your passion-what you love doing and it helps other people, then that is a recipe for success. My Guest: Alex Lasarev: Alex spent his 20's as a stand-up comedian and then accidentally built a global cult following as a dating coach until 2015. He discovered that our ability to attract amazing connections was in direct correlation to how much we fully love and accept ourselves. He then founded the Infinite Man Summit where they show men how to live fearlessly, empowering them to become the highest versions of themselves, by mastering their health wealth and relationships and ultimately discovering and living their soul's highest purpose. He had his first spiritual awakening in 2009 and went hard core pursuing enlightenment in 2015. In 2016 he started his podcast where he interviews people who are on the path of self realization and self love. Pivotal Moments: ·       When Alex was 17 he started with comedy. ·       Because of his traumatic and difficult upbringing he had no confidence. This is because he never got any love and support as a child that would have been helpful in his development. ·       In his 20's he couldn't connect with people especially with woman as he had too much fear. ·       So he got into the scene of how to talk to woman, and discovered it was manipulative. When you start living with the intention that everyone is your brother and sister then amazing things start to happen in every part of your life. Before you start your business do enough of the journey within to really discover on a deep level why you really want to do what you plan to do. Alex Pardo is a family guy, entrepreneur, real estate investor, coach, adventurer, sports enthusiast, and love helping people. He is the founder of FlipEmpire.com and its parent company, Creative RE-Solutions, LLC, and have flipped well over 300 properties. He graduated from college in 2002 with a Finance and M.I.S. degree, and went to work for General Electric's Financial Management Program (in their Consumer Finance division). At the time, he had aspirations of becoming a CEO of a Fortune 500 company, but sometime during his third month on the job, after working an average of 75 hours a week, he quickly realized that he wasn't going to create the lifestyle he envisioned working for someone else. He completed my two-year commitment to the company, and fired his bosses in January 2005. A few months later, he went backpacking around Europe & Africa with a few buddies, and while partying in Ibiza, Spain, he received a call from a friend who invited him to a "Marketing for Deals" boot camp that coming month. That was his "fork in the road". He had financed my 3-month trip on my credit card, was in debt, and had no income. The cost of the event was $997, and after a few minutes of internal debate, he bought the ticket, and booked his flight. He had committed to start a real estate business, and was going to make it happen one-way or the other. Less than two months after that boot camp, he closed my first deal and made $44,000 (which almost replaced his income with GE)! Key Takeaways: ‘Don’t make big business decisions based on what you see others do’. Alex shares a bit about how he got started in a ‘wholesaling’ business at age 12. How did he learn about real estate and did he get his first deal? In college, Alex realized that he wanted to be a CEO and run his own business. He began to self educate about real estate by reading books, watching materials and using other important tools to learn more about running a real estate business. What are some self practical things Alex has taken from the self development journey to become a real estate investor? Alex talks about the importance of figuring out things and people that work for you and with you. Keeping habits that fit not just his schedule but also empowers him and his choices. Why does Alex think it’s important to invest in reasonable business relationships? Alex says that understanding the difference between people who are “how can I help” v “what can I receive” will go a long way in cultivating healthy business and personal relationships.  What’s going on in Alex’s business world? He has been wholesaling for the past 15yrs but it wasn’t until 2011 that he began to share tasks with other people that could help. When Alex began to include people on his team, he had about 8 people but after a while, he began to rethink the necessity of 8 teams members and that was when he made the cut to 4. What does Alex think about Small team v big team in wholesaling? Every business and its owner have a model and every decision taken has to fit that model. So you have to ask, What do I want for my business and why? Whether you opt for a big team or a small team, make sure you hire the right people for the right roles because hiring the wrong people is worse than not hiring anyone at all. A big teams doesn’t mean more money and neither does a small team mean less money. Why did Alex start a mastermind? Alex believes that it is a vehicle and tool that helps him do what he’s most passionate about. Nothing beats working with the right people and helping them achieve their goals. Also, being part of a community that values you is very important. How does Alex view value? Alex advices that if you are investing in yourself and you’re paying to be in a room, make sure you’re not with people who are not willing to pay to be in that room. Today Pete speaks to Alexandra Pinteric a speaker, motivator and author. Alex writes and publishes inspiring books for kids and their parents about personal growth and the changes we experience throughout life, encouraging them to become the positive change we need in the world. They talk about the ego, self-development, philosophy and more! KEY TAKEAWAYS Alex attached a character to her ego. The badger. Everyone has a ‘badger’. We all have these voices of doubt. The ‘badger’ is telling you negative things and will even turn positive things into a negative! When Alex is teaching her clients about ego she always takes into count of the ego and how many layers are involved in personal development. Alex says energy is key to happiness in life. Without energy, we suffer from fear and depression. This knowledge is how Alex combated self-hate and depression in herself. Our physical bodies are how we express and feel everything in the world. If we are in pain then that means we are not doing something right. Alex’s journey of self-development was a struggle but she says it is almost effortless living a more authentic life. Something we should all strive for. There is beauty in everything but you have to re-programme yourself to see it in the world surrounding you. It takes work and it takes time. Alex had a difficult upbringing but felt like she was a fighter. She knew she had to fight for herself and others. She has always been an advocate, even since childhood.  BEST MOMENTS  “The ego is the structure of thoughts and emotions” “You are stronger, you are consciousness, you are ok, you are beautiful you are that part that can do anything” “I just love being me!” VALUABLE RESOURCES Subscribe to Fire In The Belly Podcast on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fire-in-the-belly/id1499375061) ABOUT THE GUEST Aleksandra Pinteric   Children’s author of several innovative children’s books, which encourage self-awareness in children and adults alike. To date, I’ve only interviewed a few guests who weren't adoptees, and this will be another one. Today you're going to meet Anne-Marie from Southern California who drafted an impassioned submission to be on the Who Am I Really podcast. At first I wanted to stay true to the focus of the show, sharing adoptee voices. But I quickly realized there is no place, that I know of, for natural mothers to tell their stories and Anne-Marie was trusting me with hers.  When she got pregnant in her teen years, she placed her daughter for adoption despite every fiber of her being wanting to keep her baby. When she turned 18 years old, Anne-Marie’s daughter Alex found her and they reunited. When Alex went to college she slipped out of her studies and into rehab where Anne-Marie was part of her and many other rehabbing adoptees recoveries. In the end Anne-Marie lost Alex twice, feels lucky to have known her at all, and wants every adoptee to know that we are loved. This is Anne-Marie’s journey.  Support this podcast

This week’s Misfit Entrepreneur is Alex Kuhn. Alex is the founder of Born to Lead – a company that helps business leaders grow & lead 6,7,8...even 10 figure businesses. Their key is helping these leaders discover their SuccessDNA and learning how to build the business model around the leaders unique, innate leadership style & talent. Alex started his entrepreneur journey as one of the top collegiate swim coaches, turning around 2 programs before the age of 28. This helped lay the foundation for his work and Born to Lead. He went on to create and sell two other companies in the health and digital space, but his passion for helping leaders tap into their best selves is what really fuels him. And it hasn’t gone un-noticed, Alex has been featured in Entrepreneur, Forbes, and a number of other outlets for his paradigm shifting leadership that has helped more than 200 clients at least double their business growth – and that is one of the main things I want him to share with you in this episode, how he does it. www.Alex-Kuhn.com www.Alex-kuhn.com/MisfitEntrepreneur ($500 FREE Gift, Success DNA Program) Alex has always had a great relationship with his father, and they love to challenge each other. When Alex was 9 years old, his father told Alex he was a “follower” to push him. Becoming a leader became part of his DNA. At the age of 12, he left home to go train with the greatest athletes in the world in swimming – people like Michael Phelps and others. He never made it to the Olympics and ended his career at age 22. Instead of taking the Fortune 500 job he was offered, he decided to take a swim coach job making essentially nothing at a tiny all girls school in Iowa. After a couple years, he got his first head coaching job becoming one of the youngest college head coaches in the space and turned the team around. He got awarded coach of the year for it. He moved up the ranks and took his next job in California. After 7 years, he was in a position to take over a top tier collegiate swim program, but he decided not to. The entrepreneur bug had been in the back of his mind for a long time and he could not ignore it any longer. So, her retired from coaching and start his entrepreneur journey. After a few years, he was still broke and not reaching success. He had a defining moment where he asked the question, “What was it that had made him so successful in swimming and coaching that he had not translated to entrepreneurship.” The answer set him on a path to the success he has now. What was the answer to the question you asked that set you on your path to success? It all came down to leadership Finding the specific style of leadership that works best for you and building the business around it was the key. How does someone break the mold and tap into this for themselves? How do they find their innate leadership style? The first thing is that we have to u-train themselves and unlearn a lot of things. Look back at your life all the way back to when you were a kid – what was it that came so easy to you? That you could just do well? You have to figure out what comes most naturally to you. SuccessDNA has 4 architypes: Developer – The person who is really good at getting the best out of others. Think of great coaches or mentors. Architect – The person who looks a vision or idea and are able to put it into a sequential plan to get it done and get the right people in place to do it. Motivator – This person has the ability to get other people to say yes and buy in. Visionary – This person is able to anticipate the future. They know where things are going before everyone else. How does an entrepreneur use their strength to the favor once they know it? Once you know your innate talent and archetype, you then ask what is going to work best with it in the following areas Marketing and sales Product and service Team If the leader understands where they are going to work best and focuses there, it makes it easy to fill in the gaps around them for the other areas. At the 17 min mark, Alex gives some examples of this. Don’t fight your natural tendencies. Ask how can you build the business around natural tendencies. “If a fish came up to you and ask you if it could fly. You would not tell them it is a hustle or mindset problem. You would tell them they were meant to swim not to fly. You must focus on what you were meant to do, your innate ability.” What makes a great leader? What do they need to have to be successful? Honesty – Are they brutally honest with you and with themselves. Are they willing to be vulnerable? Integrity – How much do the believe in the message they are sharing. Can people feel it from them and know they are behind it 100%? Courage - They’ve got boldness and guts – courage and are not afraid to step out. What is the process you take clients through that helps them more than double the size of their business? Forget the word process but look for patterns. It isn’t a step by step instruction manual. First, you have to know your SuccessDNA to setup the business structure to succeed. Second is Relevance, Resonance, and Response. At the end of the day, cash needs to be coming in the business. Is the vision relevant to those you want to serve? Does it resonate with them? Is the offer so simple and easy for a client to say yes that the response is very positive? Third, you have to have a leverage program/product/service on the back side that is one to many, not one to one from a sales standpoint that can scale. At the 30 min mark, Alex gives example of how to leverage and create leverageable businesses Are there any principles that you used to turn around swim programs that are transferrable to entrepreneurship? There is one thing missing in the entrepreneur world that the best athletic coaches do well. The best coaches fit themselves into the environment and use it to their advantage. The way this fits into business is to think about how you deeply connect to those in and around your business, your customer. How does you business best fit in with clients, employees, etc. Find the differences, highlight them, and use them to build your business around.   Best Quote: If a fish came up to you and ask you if it could fly. You would not tell them it is a hustle or mindset problem. You would tell them they were meant to swim not to fly. You must focus on what you were meant to do, your innate ability.   Alex's Misfit 3: Listen and trust yourself first and foremost Understand what you want to define your relationship with others. Got a question? I'm here to help. Call me at 844-9INTERN. "Michael Jordan getting on board brings a huge element of star power to the sport, it'll engage new fans, and push it forward to the next generation." - Alex Andrejev on MJ being a NASCAR team owner.   Alexandra Andrejev works at The Charlotte Observer, covering MLS's Charlotte FC and NASCAR. She has a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts & Business Management at Columbia University and a Master of Science in Journalism from the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.    Alex produced and co-hosted a podcast show called "Too many men on the field," an exciting show that looks into sports through a female lens.    When Alex started to cover NASCAR, a sport she wasn't very familiar with, she first learned the sport's technicalities. Then she focused on introducing the drivers to the audience, writing profile stories about people, and find out the language spoken in the NASCAR universe.    The Coronavirus pandemic affected not only the sport of NASCAR but also the way it is covered. Now, the stories are more about how teams perform on each race with little to no practice. Before the pandemic, when there were no practice restrictions nor limitations, stories were more about comparisons on how teams performed on each track in the past. That is why Alex considers that at the moment, one of the biggest stories would be about how the racing industry will bring fans back.

As creative thinkers and entrepreneurs, we create tools and products because we, ourselves, need to work on something. For Canadian entrepreneur superstar, Alex Ikonn, co-founder of Intelligent Change and creator of the best-selling Five Minute Journal and Productivity Planner, gratitude was his Achilles heel. When Alex, who had a challenging childhood and at times had felt like a victim of his circumstances, learned the power of gratitude, it shifted his whole life. If you have scarcity in your life of some sort, whether it be from things that are happening in your family, or in your career, or relationships, you can get into that trap of saying, "Why me?" When Alex had that first huge realization that you are planting seeds to your reality with your everyday thoughts and that what you focus on, you cultivate and create in your life, everything changed for him. He learned that if you want to make any difference in your life, you have to take responsibility. This led him to create tools like the Five Minute Journal that could act like “toothbrushes for the mind” and help people build new, healthy habits through a daily routine of being grateful that catapults them on a new life trajectory through changing their mindset. No one can make you unhappy. Once you take responsibility in your life, there is power in this. If you take care of that one being that you can be responsible for – YOU – you're making such a big change because it's going to be a ripple effect and you're going to inspire others. In this episode, Alex Ikonn shares his personal journey and it demonstrates how one truly simple question, asked once per day, can make a massive, fundamental difference in your life. Feeling Good Podcast | TEAM-CBT - The New Mood Therapy

Today we feature a brilliant and beloved colleague, Dr. Alex Clarke. At the start of today’s podcast, Alex describes his unexpected journey from psychoanalysis / psychodynamic therapy to TEAM, but discovered that TEAM can actually be viewed as a type of psychoanalytic therapy. In fact, the two fathers of cognitive therapy, Albert Ellis, PhD, and Aaron Beck, MD, began their careers as psychoanalysts. They were simply looking for specific techniques to help their patients develop rapid and tangible change, and not just understanding that unfolds over a period of years. David and Alex discuss some of the surprising overlaps between TEAM and psychodynamic therapy, as well as some of the striking differences. Similarities Changing the Focus: Often there’s tension in the room, especially during therapy sessions. When you bring it to conscious awareness in a kindly way, it will often lead to therapeutic breakthrough. The Relationship Journal: This is a rapid way to highlight the recurring patterns that cause conflicts in intimate relationships. Interpersonal Downward Arrow: This is a high-speed version of psychoanalysis which reveals your “core conflict” in ten minutes, as compared with five years on the analyst’s couch. Hidden Emotion Technique: This is the idea that anxious individuals are overly “nice” and feel they have to suppress certain kinds of positive or negative feelings, which then emerge, in disguised form as some type of anxiety, such as chronic worrying, a phobia, a panic attack, OCD, and so forth. Differences T = Testing techniques: Most analysts are dead set against testing, thinking it will somehow hurt or ruin the “transference.” TEAM therapists are convinced it is difficult, if not impossible, to do good therapy without session by session assessments to track how patients feel, and how they feel about the therapist. E = Empathy training and methods: TEAM therapists get highly accurate and sensitive empathy ratings after every session from every patient. Many therapists get failing grades from most patients at most sessions. The patient’s criticisms are not taken as evidence for the patient’s distortions of the relationships, but rather as valid indicators of the therapist’s actual errors. This information is used to deepen the therapeutic relationship. A = Assessment of resistance: Freud devoted his career to understanding and trying to solve the puzzle of resistance—but his free association on the couch was not terribly effective. TEAM therapists bring subconscious resistance to conscious awareness quickly, and melt it away rapidly with a variety of techniques. This opens the door to the possibility of ultra-rapid recovery. M = Methods: TEAM therapists use more than 100 methods drawn from more than a dozen schools of therapy. The therapist and patient work together collaboratively to solve specific problems, and homework between sessions in mandatory. Alex’s current passions span a broad range of mental health treatment, and as a result, provide lots of great opportunities for fun and collaboration with David, as well as the rest of the TEAM community. Clinical work: Alex sees patients three days per week, using TEAM and occasionally medications if needed. Training / teaching: He teaches with David and several other experienced TEAM therapists at David’s weekly training group at Stanford. The Feeling Great app: Alex is assisting David and Jeremy Karmel in the process of making TEAM Therapy accessible to everyone as an electronic app. The app will include real-life examples bringing the techniques to life along with step-by-step instructions for how to put techniques into action. Putting these powerful psychotherapy ideas and methods in patients’ hands provides an exciting opportunity to accelerate healing and augment therapy, since the tool can be assigned as homework between therapy sessions. Also, when patients get stuck with topics in the app, they can discuss these with their therapists, deepen their understanding, and bring them to life through role-plays, etc. Statistical modeling: With David’s mentoring, Alex is working to learn data analytic and statistical modeling methods that can help investigators explore and understand how effective psychotherapy actually works. Measurement and Search: Alex has joined David’s son, Erik, on the exciting mission of promoting measurement-based and feedback-informed treatment as the standard of care in mental health. They are currently in the final phases of developing and rolling out an electronic system for use by therapists and patients to assess mood before, after, and between therapy sessions in order to assess changes in therapy as well as relapses between sessions. This system will provide unique insights for clinicians as well as patients about what’s helping, what’s not helping. The tool will also have a search-engine celebrating clinicians who commit use measurement consistently in their clinical work and will help patients find clinicians with outstanding skills in the areas where they need help. Alex was born in Seattle and grew up splitting his time between the east and west coast. Alex went to high school and college in North Carolina and played in a band for several years after finishing college. He also worked in restaurants, real estate, audio engineering, and even owned a vending machine business for several years! He’s always been a giant outdoors enthusiast, loving to hike, ski, climb, and surf. When Alex went to medical school, he planned to become an emergency room physician because of his love for adventure and wilderness. During medical school, Alex fell in love with the operating room and almost decided to become a surgery resident. However, during a summer research internship, Alex became increasingly interested in neuroscience and began devouring literature on consciousness and emotion research, as well as the brain-machine interface. When he discovered psychiatry during his clinical rotations, he was sold. Psychotherapy struck him as particularly awe-inspiring and he decided to dedicate himself to its learning and practice. In his final year of medical school, Alex traveled around the country doing rotations at medical centers across the US in an effort to learn how mental healthcare is practiced in different settings and regions. He searched broadly for psychotherapy mentors and feels wildly lucky to have found Dr. David Burns during his residency at Stanford. During residency, Alex trained in several different schools of psychotherapy, including advanced psychodynamic training with the SFCP (San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis). As he puts it “there are lots of metaphors for human experiences, but all of these schools for some reason feel a need to use their own jargon, which can sometimes be off-putting or confusing.” I, David, would add that I agree with this 200%. For example, there is a concept called “projective identification.” For years I felt intimidated by this term and couldn’t figure out what it meant! Then someone explained it to me, and for a brief moment, I “got it.” But now, I again have no idea what it means! Alex decided that understandable language was important and discovered that Dr. Burns had been developing “common language” for important psychotherapy ideas as well as a framework for understanding how effective treatment works. Alex loved this and decided to join David is his mission of translating essential psychological and philosophical ideas into practical, usable healing techniques. One of things that Alex expresses that he admires most about David is his strength in taking complex ideas and bringing them down to a simple, digestible, human level. I, David, would add that I love working with Alex, and have learned so much from him, both in terms of the numerous technical discoveries and amazing breakthroughs that have evolved in our research, but I have also learned a little about the incredible value of humility and “selflessness” from this kindly gentle giant! I, Rhonda, would liked to add that I also love working with Alex.  I admire his kind soul, his gentle disposition, and his perceptive mind. Rhonda and I feel extremely lucky to be working with Dr. Alex! Rhonda and David Dr. Alex Clarke can be reached at: 650-382-2090, alex@clarkemd.com   Alex is available by video appointment for anyone located anywhere in the state of California.  He provides psychiatric evaluations, TEAM psychotherapy, and medication management for any condition, so don't hesitate to reach out to him by phone or email anytime to discuss evaluation/consultation options or treatment needs.  He is also available to clinicians for TEAM case consultation.   Thank you!!!

I’m reading from chapter 1 of my book, Earning Freedom: Conquering a 45-Year Prison Term For more information, visit PrisonProfessors.com Podcast 112: Earning Freedom 1.3 ******* The marshals escort four of us in chains through the working areas of the post office. I see postal clerks eying us suspiciously as they sort the mail into large bags while we wait for an elevator to take us to the courthouse. We walk into a bullpen. The marshals remove our handcuffs and chains before locking us in. A few minutes later the marshals bring in Alex, my former partner. I recognize his voice when they lock him into an adjacent cage. We can’t see each other, but once the marshals leave I hold onto the bars on the front gate and talk to Alex, disregarding the solid wall that separates us. “How can you testify against me?” I ask him. “We’ve been like brothers.” Alex graduated from high school two years ahead of me, but despite our age difference, we became close friends. After he introduced me to the money we could earn by selling cocaine, we became partners. “I'm sorry.” I could hear the humiliation in his voice. “It was too fast. When they caught me, I just got scared. I didn’t know this would happen.” Alex began cooperating with prosecutors a year before my arrest, when DEA agents caught him with a kilogram of cocaine.  In a plea negotiation that would limit him to two years in prison, he agreed to testify against me. “Do you know that I’m facing a life sentence?” “I heard.”  His voice drops, and I know the severity of sanction that I face weighs heavily on him. “The government’s case rests on your testimony.” I try to manipulate not so much what Alex will say, but how he will say it. “It all rests on you. Either you can come across like some kind of star witness, or you can come across in a way that might make you look like a liar in the eyes of the jury. Just remember that you’ve already got your deal. If you fall apart under cross-examination from my attorney, the jury won’t convict me.” “I got ya.” The seed I planted bears fruit. When Alex testifies before the jury, both on direct examination from the prosecutor and on cross-examination from Raymond, he seems totally untrustworthy. His testimony emboldens me, as I know Alex’s stuttering and mumbling portray him as a less than credible witness, out to save his skin at any cost. Later that evening I’m elated when I return to the jail, thinking that my friend came through. The government has been counting on his testimony, but now the prosecutors will have to present more compelling evidence if they want a conviction. In the following days, we have peaks and valleys, scoring well with some witnesses, not so well with others. All in all, I feel my acquittal nearing. ******* My hopes for release shatter during the second week of the trial. When I return to the jail after court one evening, I call Lisa for our nightly conversation. While we’re talking I hear aggressive male voices shouting in the background. Then the line goes dead. I dial the number again. Someone picks up the phone without answering.  I hear a click followed by silence. Frantic now, I dial a third time. I haven’t dispelled rumors in the jail that I’m a man of means, and I worry that some gang leader from the jail has orchestrated a home invasion or kidnapping. Finally, a male voice answers. When the operator announces my collect call, the call goes through. “Hello, Michael.” The man who answers takes a familiar tone, snickering. “Who is this and what’re you doing in my house?” I squeeze the handset of the phone in anger. “I’m a special agent with the DEA,” he taunts. “You’ll find out soon enough why we’re here.” “You’re harassing my family because you’re losing the trial.” The agent laughs at me. “I don’t think that’s the case,” he says. Then, just before he hangs up, he adds that they’ve arrested Tom, Lisa’s brother. Minutes later, officers from the jail arrive to pull me out from the housing unit. They lock me between sally port cages that separate the unit from jail corridors and I crouch down in despair. My mind reels with questions. Worry torments me. Why would the agents invade Lisa’s house? Why would the agent tell me they have Tom? My heart races like never before. Then I see a team of DEA agents enter the housing unit. They march past me and into my cell for an apparent search. After the agents finish their ransacking, the guards lead me back into the housing unit and lock me inside. Adrenaline surges through my body, I can’t sleep. When guards come for me in the morning, I’m pacing. They escort me to the bullpen for court transportation and I’m stunned to see Tom, Lisa’s brother. “What’re you doing here?” I can’t believe Tom is in jail. He’s been free on bond since our initial arrest, sitting beside me at trial each day. I can’t fathom what happened. “I messed up.” He doesn’t look at me when he responds. “What are you talking about? Were you home last night when the DEA busted in on Lisa?” Tom didn’t even know that the DEA had been to the house. He tells me that the DEA arrested him yesterday afternoon following the court proceedings. “Why did they arrest you? And why would the DEA bust in on Lisa?” “I messed up.” Tom repeats. He won’t make eye contact. While sitting on the bench, rubbing his face and looking at the floor of the cage, he tells me what happened. Several months ago, just days after my arrest, when I instructed Tom to retrieve those eight kilograms of cocaine and deliver them to Walt, Tom decided to sell them on his own. One of his customers, it turns out, is a DEA agent. “You mean you’ve been selling that cocaine this whole time on your own?” I’m angry to learn that Tom disregarded my specific instructions to deliver the cocaine to Walt. Tom nods. “I thought I could make more money that way.” I close my eyes and shake my head. “Please tell me that you weren’t storing the coke at Lisa’s house.” “I didn’t keep it there, but I stashed money under my mattress. I also gave Lisa some money I’d been paid by the guy who turned out to be the undercover DEA agent.” All I can think about is the possibility that Lisa has been arrested. I receive clarification a few hours later, when Raymond fills me in. He says the agents might charge Lisa with the crime of lying to a federal officer.  When the agents were at the house, she told them that the money in her purse belonged to her, when in fact Tom had given her DEA-marked bills. At least she wasn’t in custody. Raymond urges me to snap out of my despair and focus on the final hours of my trial, which is my immediate problem. I no longer care about the trial or its outcome. The true severity of my problems has finally crashed down upon me. I’ve not only made a disaster of my own life, but of everyone else’s, I want to give up, to die. ******* The jury returns its verdict, convicting me on every count. Lies of innocence yield to the reality of my guilt. I have to accept that I’m facing a life sentence. Who cares? I don’t know what’s coming. Nothing matters. The government may charge Lisa with a felony and the thought of her in handcuffs rips me apart. I ask Raymond to make some kind of deal with prosecutors, to tell them I’ll accept a life sentence, a death sentence, I’ll waive my right to appeal, anything, if the government will leave Lisa alone. He tells me the government hasn’t even charged me in the case. “Then tell them I’ll confess. I arranged for Tom to receive those eight kilograms. They were part of the same crime I was just convicted of, but if I hadn’t sent Tom, the coke would’ve stayed buried.” “I'm not going to do that. You’re under duress. I don’t want you cooperating. You haven’t even been sentenced and you’ve got excellent prospects on appeal.” “I don’t care about an appeal, I don’t care about anything other than doing what I can to spare Lisa. She doesn’t deserve this. Call the prosecutor. Tell him I’ll confess.” “I won’t do it.” Raymond doesn’t want to involve himself with my talking to prosecutors. I don’t understand his reluctance–it may be that he doesn’t want me to reveal the counsel he has given throughout my ordeal, or he worries that I might divulge information about the property he received from Paco as part of his fee. I don’t care. Raymond is not my priority. Wanting to do whatever I can for Lisa, I fire Raymond, telling him that I don’t want him to represent me anymore. I dial the prosecutor, Jerry Diskin, myself. “Is this the same Michael Santos who testified that he didn’t know anything about drug trafficking?” The prosecutor is mocking me. “Look, Jerry,” I say, “I was doing what my attorney told me I had to do. I’m sorry. I’ll confess to anything you want, I’ll give up my right to appeal, I’ll accept any sentence you want to impose. Please, just don’t put Lisa through this.” “I have some problems with what you’re offering,” the prosecutor puts me in my place. “Let me start from the beginning. First, don’t ever call me Jerry. I’m a United States Attorney, Mr. Diskin to you. Do you get that?” “Yes. I’m sorry.” “Second, I do not, I repeat, I do not want to speak with you unless it’s through an attorney. Why are you contacting me instead of Raymond?” “Raymond doesn’t want me to talk with you. I don’t want him to represent me anymore.” “Then I’ll have the public defender send someone over. Don’t contact me again. And for the record, let me respond to the offer you made. I don’t need your confession. You’re convicted, and you’re facing a life sentence. Your appeal doesn’t concern me. I don’t know why you think I would want to talk to you.” Mr. Diskin is right, I realize. I breathe in deeply and exhale, trying to ease the pressure and anxiety squeezing my chest. ******* While lying on my rack, I think of all the ways I’ve disappointed and humiliated my parents. They never wanted the business expansion I craved. Throughout my childhood and adolescence, my parents worked hard, hoping to give my sisters and me privileges that they didn’t enjoy growing up. They weren’t college-educated people, but they loved us, and they built a life that provided our family with a beautiful home, new cars, regular vacations. I abused their trust and pushed them into decisions they would’ve never made without my influence.  Ultimately, my greed led to the destruction of our family and their business. Then, when I saw a better opportunity to enrich myself by dealing cocaine, I abandoned them. My decisions destroyed my parents’ prosperity, contributed to their divorce, and embarrassed my sisters. My criminal decisions also humiliated my grandparents.  They were devout Catholics who expected me to lead a moral life and make good decisions. The letters I’ve been receiving from my mother describe their disgust at my actions. I haven’t had the courage to speak to them since my arrest. Instead, I’ve burdened my mom with the impossible task of defending me to them. My mental anguish is relentless. I carry Lisa’s picture in my hand trying frantically to think of anything that might save her. How can I persuade the government not to prosecute her? Suicide feels so inviting. I think about another prisoner who did it using the blades from one of the plastic razors we’re allowed to have in jail. While sitting in a toilet stall, he sliced his wrists and bled to death. That option appeals to me. It could be one way of reaching Mr. Diskin. If I’m dead, he may feel some sympathy for Lisa. But killing myself would crush my parents and my sisters. Although I don’t want to face the consequences of my actions, I know I can’t allow these suicidal thoughts to continue. My dad urges me to be strong and through long letters that my mom writes, she shows that her support will not waver.  Lisa, on the other hand, worries mostly about the fallout from my problems spilling over to her. During our daily phone calls, tormented by the possibility of going to prison she pleads with me to save her. Boils erupt on my arms and legs as the stress I’m feeling manifests itself throughout my body.  The egg-sized volcanoes of pus burn like hot acid under my skin, exerting unbearable pressure. Only a visit to the infirmary for an excision relieves the pain, though within hours of having one drained, more begin to fester and swell. ******* I’ve been in jail for six months and must languish through several more before my sentencing date. I don’t know what the judge will impose, though I accept the possibility of a life sentence as being real. I’m not interested in playing cards or table games. I stay in my cell reading the Bible with hopes of finding solace, an anchor. The Scriptures help me resist a growing urge to end my life and strengthen me to hold on for another day. Although I want to identify with the agonies and loss described in the Book of Job, comparisons end there. Job, at least, wasn’t beset with self-recriminations over acting stupidly and dishonestly. Knowing that decisions I made spawned my tribulations aggravates the continuous torment in my mind. The marshals come for me again and drive me to the courthouse. I meet Justin, my public defender who is there for my debriefing session with Mr. Diskin. Justin hasn’t had an opportunity to review any court records or files pertaining to my predicament, though he knows a jury convicted me on numerous counts of high-level drug charges only days before. I haven’t been charged with additional crimes and he doesn’t understand my motivation for wanting to talk with the prosecutors. “Look man,” I tell him in the private room, “I’m responsible for everything.  I’m the one who told Tom to pick up the eight keys.  He may’ve sold them to the guy who turned out to be DEA, but I’m responsible.” “But you haven’t been charged,” Justin points out. “What do you hope to gain from this admission?” “The government can do whatever it wants with me. But the prosecutors are threatening to charge Lisa with a felony. All I want is to take the punishment myself, whatever it is.  Tell them to slam me with whatever, but to leave her alone.” The public defender shakes his head in resignation, knowing that I’m not ready to receive counsel.  We walk to an adjacent courtroom to meet with the prosecutor.  Justin sits beside me as I respond to Mr. Diskin’s questions. His first question is whether I lied when I took the witness stand during my trial. I answer that I did, and he asks whether I understand that admitting to such lies exposes me to the additional criminal charges of perjury. I offer to accept any charges or sanctions the government wants to impose and then I plead with the prosecutor not to charge Lisa. Mr. Diskin smirks, unmoved. The debriefing session lasts for an hour. In the end, Mr. Diskin tells me that I haven’t revealed anything he doesn’t already know. “You’re going to have to face the full punishment for your crimes.”  The prosecutor narrows his eyes as he lashes out at me.  “And you may find yourself sitting at the defendant’s table again, this time beside your wife.” The marshals drive me back to the jail. I’m completely spent, knowing that I’m powerless to protect Lisa. For weeks I lie in my cell, clutching my pillow, staring at the wall, catatonic with grief. ******* While I wait through long months leading to my sentencing date, I look for anything that will pique my interest. I stumble across a two-volume hardcover anthology called A Treasury of Philosophy in the jail’s book cart. Hoping it might help, I begin reading. Even though I’ve never been a reader, the essays intrigue me. Since graduating from high school I haven’t read a single book. Yet now, here I am, aching with thoughts tormenting my mind as I try to read philosophy in a jail cell. Philosophy isn’t a subject I’ve encountered before. I find a dictionary and begin a tentative step into another world, discovering that the essays in this anthology help to lessen my feeling of hopelessness. They give me new understanding of an individual’s relationship to society. I begin to believe that maybe, over time, I can reconcile myself with my fellow citizens. This thought of redemption comes to me as I read the French philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau, who defines the “social contract” and outlines each citizen’s covenant with and responsibility to society. In breaking the law, I haven’t been faithful to the social contract Rousseau described, but in reading his work, I begin to believe that I can make amends. I read John Locke, whose essays on human understanding introduce me to the concept of the tabula rasa, or blank slate. Locke believed that everyone comes into this world without prior knowledge or innate ideas. Rather, everything a person sees, feels, tastes, and smells makes an impression, influencing who and what the person becomes. As Locke suggests, I learn from my experiences in society. In turn, those experiences spawn the values that guide my thoughts, my decisions, and my actions. Thinking about Locke’s philosophy, I rest the open book on my chest and stare at the ceiling of my cell while I clasp my hands behind my head. What made the lasting impression on my blank slate? What prompted me to think that earning money by selling cocaine would be a proper life choice? The questions deepen my introspection. ******* Unlike many of the men locked up with me, I had options. Had I chosen college, my parents would’ve supported my decision. But without worries about receiving a paycheck, I took the easy road. At 20, I persuaded my dad to pay me a higher salary than I deserved.  He also leased a new black Bronco I could drive without concerning myself with expenses for gasoline, insurance, or maintenance. If it wasn’t economic necessity that drove me to crime, what was it? Maybe insecurity. I wanted others to see me as something more than what I was. Greed and a sense of entitlement drove my decisions. But underneath the flash I wasn’t anything more than an insecure boy. Where did my fixation with money begin? My grandparents lived a moral life as hardworking Americans, and they showered my sisters and me with love from the time we were children. I should’ve learned more from them. Yet, I equated who I was with what I materially possessed, always wanting more. In our household, we never spoke honestly about drugs.  Although our parents harped about the wickedness of drugs, their admonitions didn’t apply to the consumption of alcohol. They entertained in our home regularly and drinking was always a major component of any gathering. When my sisters and I discovered that two of our parents’ close friends–one a prominent lawyer and the other a neurologist–had used cocaine, we confronted our parents.  They made excuses.  I still remember, vividly, how my mother tried to explain, telling my sisters and me that their friends snorted coke for health reasons. Inconsistencies between what my parents said about drugs and alcohol with what I saw may have contributed to my perceptions on morality. Likewise, my parents’ tolerance for bid rigging and collusion in the pursuit of contracts to advance our construction business couldn’t help but influence my sensitivity to the law’s relative importance to society. My parents’ lectures about honesty, integrity, temperance, and other virtues of good citizenship didn’t make as firm an impression on me as the hypocrisy I saw.  As far as I was concerned, certain activities might be illegal, but if they were committed without harming recognizable victims, then it was okay to shrug off or disregard those laws. My parents’ reasoning differed dramatically from the principled approach Rousseau taught in his essay on the social contract, a pact that bound all citizens. ******* As I move closer to my sentencing date, I begin to feel responsible for the crimes I committed. By contemplating the writings of John Locke, I start to appreciate the influences that shaped the young man I’ve become, and I accept that I have to change.  I must “unlearn” the corrupting influences that led to my bad actions, and eventually, to my imprisonment. When I pick up the Treasury of Philosophy again, I read an essay that describes the trial of Socrates and it slowly helps me accept the predicament I have created. Socrates was convicted for breaking an absurd law that prohibited the aristocratic classes from teaching the commoners. The Athenian tribunal sentenced Socrates to a self-induced death by poisoning for his crime. He waited patiently in jail for the date of his scheduled execution. Many leaders of Athens loved and respected Socrates.  Outraged at his sentence, they coordinated a plan that would allow him to escape punishment and live the remainder of his life in exile. Socrates refused the offer, explaining that his conscience would not permit him to sneak away, avoiding punishment for his actions. Reading about Socrates inspires me. As a lover of law and democracy, Socrates asserted that his honor would require that he carry out the sentence by drinking the poison that would kill him. In my eyes, that principled position reveals Socrates as a man of strength and courage.  While waiting for the imposition of my sentence, I look to him as a role model for the type of thoughtful man I’d like to become. With my Bible and the philosophy books, I live like a monk in my cell. The reading transports me to new worlds of thought and contemplation. I feel an unfamiliar maturity creeping into me, bringing hope. I write letters to my parents, my sisters, and every day I write to Lisa, promising to redeem my crimes by educating myself and using time in prison to prepare for a productive life upon release. ******* Seven months after my initial arrest, the government indicts me with several new criminal counts. I accept these new charges and don’t dispute the leading role I played in distributing eight kilograms of cocaine or my perjury during the trial. Lisa isn’t named in the indictment, although the lawyers speculate that she’ll later face criminal charges for lying to a federal officer. My efforts to protect Lisa have failed, but prayer and philosophy inspire optimism. Rather than allowing forces I can’t control–such as the sentence my judge will impose–to dictate my attitude, I begin to feel a spiritual strength building inside of me. Prison will not destroy or define me. Rather, I make a commitment to define myself through my response to the sanctions I face. ******* I want to atone for my crimes. To make my statement public, I write to Stuart Eskenazi, a journalist who covered my trial for The Tacoma News Tribune. In the letter, I express remorse for my crimes and for the ways I acted after arrest. I pledge to find ways to make up for my wrongs during the decades ahead. A few days later, Eskenazi comes to interview me in jail. I understand that audiences will be skeptical about my commitment to educating myself and to creating opportunities for positive social contributions. Still, I’m committed to begin anew. I feel myself turning the page on the decisions that brought me into confinement. The front-page story that Mr. Eskenazi writes for the local paper does not influence my sentencing judge. After two separate hearings, he imposes consecutive sentences. In total, the judge orders that I serve a 45-year sentence and fines me $500,000 for my crimes. “You will be an old man when you walk out of prison,” the judge states flatly. “But you’ve earned it.”

No, there wasn't an issue with recording. No, we did not run out of things to talk about on this classic film. We are just doing things a little differently on Slashers these days. Instead of going through every bit of minutia on the recap of the film, we are focusing on the noteworthy parts. Please let us know if you like this change. So far, we are loving it. We have recorded another episode already with this format and we feel it is more substantive, higher energy, and you don't have to listen to our annoying voices any longer than need be. This week's film is A Clockwork Orange, based on the Anthony Burges novel of the same name. Both the film and the novella follow Alex, the ringleader of a gang of droogs, whom he rules with something of an iron fist. Alex finds himself imprisoned after his cohorts betray him after a failed coup. While in prison, Alex learns of a new radical way of being released early. He is subjected to the Ludovico Technique, which blends psychiatric drugs with aversion therapy. When he is released onto the streets, he finds that one of his old droogs has died, while another, Dim, has become a police officer. After Alex falls victim to a cadre of geriatric librarians, he falls into the clutches of Dim, who beats him to near death. Alex then crawls to the doorstep of a former victim of his, who quickly discerns our would-be hero's true identity. The victim, and author of A Clockwork Orange, tries to use Alex for political means, ploying him to commit suicide. When Alex is unsuccessful in killing himself, he finds that he is free of the aversion to violence and sex. In this episode we talk about how the US version of the novel, along with Stanley Kubrick's film, differ from the source material. Kubrick (The Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb) originally cut the movie in a four-hour film. Once he cut it down to the theatrical cut, he had his assistant destroy the original footage; sorry gang, no deleted scenes here. Have you ever noticed Kubrick's seven diamonds? Well, download the episode and find out what that means! The film stars a young Malcolm McDowell (Time After Time, Halloween, Star Trek: Generations). Another noteworthy actor in the film, is Darth Vader in short shorts, David Prowse. . . y'know, from that Star Wars thing the kids are talking about these days. In the episode, we discuss the origins of Nadsat, the slang used by the young folk. Why is it so much more successful than newspeak from 1984? We give our thoughts. Tick Boot Camp’s guest today is Jody Hudson from the Alex Hudson Lyme Foundation. Ms. Hudson joins the podcast today on behalf of her daughter, Alex. Ms. Hudson is from Fresno, California. Her daughter grew up a typical, healthy girl who loved to play sports. When Alex was in 5th grade, she started to experience joint pain. Doctors found nothing and dismissed Alex as a medical mystery for 10 years. She was correctly diagnosed with Lyme in May 2017, but it was too late. Lyme triggered Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) in Alex, and the two diseases destroyed her body. She was never able to gain control of her illness and passed away in March of 2018. As Alex was always service oriented, once she was diagnosed with Lyme, she wanted to help others. If you would like to learn about how Ms. Hudson is carrying on her daughter’s legacy through the Alex Hudson Lyme Foundation, then tune in now!

Unfortunately, nothing in life is promised and as Alex processes the news, he wants to share with you all what's going through his mind about after hearing about the tragic accident that killed Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and 7 others. Key Takeaways: Alex is incredibly sad to hear the news about the late Kobe Bryant. Alex was a fan of Kobe's work on and off the basketball court.  Kobe Bryant had a big reach all over the world and people from different cultures knew him.  When Alex first heard the news, he thought it was fake.  Alex can't believe his daughter was also taken from him. As a father himself, that is devastating.  What made Kobe so loved in the NBA?  What is Kobe's Mamba Mentality (and how can you apply this in your life)?  Thoughts and prayers go out to all the people who were affected in the crash.  Why does it take a tragedy to not sweat the small stuff? Don't sacrifice what's most important for the pursuit of money.   Are you living life all out?  If you're determined to succeed, nothing is going to get in your way.  You don't have to be a professional athlete to apply Kobe's Mamba Mentality.  Remember, you got to put the work in.  There are no guarantees in life. Love your loved ones. Mentioned in This Episode: How To Grow Your Business, Expand Your Impact, and Experience Your Perfect Life: Don't Wait To Enjoy Your Life Tomorrow, Live It Today! More than a million dogs are euthanized in shelters each year. Many are pit bulls or other bully breeds, which are often stereotyped as vicious and sometimes outlawed by local government.Alex Castiglione is working to change all that. When Alex visited a shelter after losing his beloved bully, Chops, he noticed all of the unadopted dogs were bully breeds. Soon after, he and his wife founded Barbells for Bullies, a nonprofit organization raising funds and awareness for animal rescues all over the country, with an emphasis on bully breeds. He and Sean talk about what motivated him to start his organization, the prevailing misconceptions about bully breeds and what people can do in their own communities to help local shelters and rescues.Links:Barbells for BulliesFree ToolsContact:Instagram: @barbellsforbulliesinfo@barbellsforbullies.orgalex@barbellsforbullies.orgTimeline:1:39 – Alex's first CrossFit workout: "I was not prepared."2:40 – How he fell in love with bully breeds.4:36 – Stigma surrounding bully breeds.5:58 – Founding Barbells for Bullies.8:18 – CrossFit + bullies = a perfect match.9:11 – From one 80-athlete competition in 2016 to 12 events in 10 cities in 2018.10:36 – Managing growth and scalability.13:26 – What Barbells for Bullies has done so far.15:59 – There's no such thing as bad dogs; there are only bad owners.17:21 – PAW-tners in fitness and advocacy.19:30 – The Underdog Fund: taking dogs off death row.21:02 – The future of Barbells for Bullies: More partners, more events and more dogs saved.25:00 – What people can do to help.28:44 – What keeps Alex motivated to grow Barbells for Bullies while also working full time and attending graduate school.

In this week's episode, Alex shares why you shouldn't beat yourself up if you fail at something. Every failure has a teaching moment for you and even though it might sting right now, there is something even greater and more positive just around the corner. Failure has made Alex the man he is today and he is grateful for it!   Key Takeaways: Alex believes people are failing much more than they are succeeding, and that's a good thing! Alex has been overwhelmed with his business too. It happens to everyone! About three-to-six months ago, Alex had to take a hard look at his business and figure out what he truly wanted to do. Alex shares a story about his daughter losing a game. There is really no such thing as failure. As long as you learn something, you didn't fail. One of Alex's team members recently left. This was a great learning moment for Alex because he was able to look at the business in a different way. Alex challenged his team to accomplish more with less. Bigger isn't always better. Better is Better! Alex is grateful for his failures. He knows when it happens, something great is around the corner. When Alex was early in his career, he wrote in a journal what he did right and what he did wrong when he was working on his deals. Our guest for today is Alex Song, the CEO, and co-founder of Innovation Department, a Manhattan-based tech-powered start-up studio that builds consumer brands. At Innovation Department, they understand that Amazon is an incredible platform, and they enjoy using it to launch their brands, in parallel with their direct-to-consumer websites. Alex believes that working with Amazon, rather than against it, is the best way to help start-up brands reach audiences and build brand visibility.  When Alex first started building his business, he set it up as a traditional incubator where he would invest passively in different direct-to-consumer businesses, while trying to create other businesses from scratch. The result of this was that Alex ended up learning from the passive investments how to do a much better job of building his other businesses.  Then, in early 2018, he decided to focus only on the 100% wholly-owned brands that his company was building in-house. Since 2018, Amazon has taken more than half of all US e-commerce traffic and volume. So, to be successful in direct-to-consumer, Alex realized that he had to figure out how to best take advantage of the world’s largest distribution channel.   Connect with Alex on LinkedIn Connect with Alex on Twitter Learn more about Innovation Department Learn more about Dojo Mojo Learn more about Payoneer’s Capital Advance

They say seeing is believing. Sometimes what you see is deceiving. Malefic is hiding in the City. He could be anywhere. He could be anyone. James is driving Kelly out of town. Will putting distance between them be enough to keep Kelly safe from the malicious Martian? What other secrets are hiding in plain sight? The rest of the team is Downtown trying to deceive Malefic wearing different faces. Those image inducers are no match for this crafty Martian. Surely the transmatter portal that Brainy brought will banish Malefic back to the Phantom Zone. How was he able to phase right through it? It was calibrated by a twelfth level intellect! Brainy is distracted. In the days since the break up with Nia he has been analyzing what went wrong. Tiny boxes didn’t make for a good boyfriend and neither did one hundred percent poetic partner. Alex calls Lena to help brainy with calibrations on the portal. Not only does she help with the technology but Lena comes bearing relationship insight as well. She explains it to him in a language he understands. The language of Science. Brainy is in a loop if he doesn’t change a variable he will not escape it. She reminds him it is ok to ask for help. Lena suggests Brainy and Nia work on their relationship as a team. Lena is pretending to be a team player right now. The Super Friends are trying to capture Malefic so she will play nice for now. She believes Malefic is the missing piece to achieve her goal of mind control with the use of Q waves. Nia uses her dream projection to try to get more information on William. Something about him doesn’t seem quite right. Based on Nia’s information Supergirl tracks down a lead named Elena Torres. She is too late. Someone has killed her. Who has a reason to murder an Obsidian Worldwide accountant? Kara was able to confirm one thing. William is in Mexico City, but why? Back in National City the Martian Safety Protocol has failed. The Martian that can manipulate minds simply took control of a DEO agent. Now he has taken over the mind of Director Danvers. When Alex confronts J’onn about his secret you really see how ashamed he is about deceiving his Earth daughters. Kelly is far away from Malefic but she is still connected to him. She sees what he is doing and she knows Alex is in trouble. Kelly and James return to National City to join the fight. At the Planetarium it is time for a showdown of cosmic proportions. Alex is still under the control of Malefic and tries to shoot J’onn. He will never let Malefic have her. He will restore her mind even if it kills him. J’onn succeeds but the battle is not over. Malefic planned an explosive finale. Time is running out on the bomb strapped to Alex. J’onn phases through her to get the vest and Kara swoops in with her cape to absorb the explosion. The repaired portal sends Malefic back to the Phantom Zone or does it? Remember sometimes seeing is deceiving. Many secrets hide in plain sight. We didn’t know what to think about William and now we know he is not a bad guy. He was just trying to protect Ms. Torres and Kara. Lena is so good at playing nice that nobody has their eyes on her. What will her next move be? Will Kelly be able to see what Lena is doing through Malefic’s eyes now that he is in her custody? We know Jimmy’s next move, back to his Hometown. Andrea said he couldn’t be a reporter. She said nothing about publishing a paper. Someone has to tell the truth. He wants to stand up for what is right and he doesn’t need a shield to do it. There is more than one way to be a hero. This your eye in the sky, Green Butterfly. Please look out for clues and join us next week for another super adventure.

Alex is a sports nutritionist and mountain athlete passionate about helping people exceed their mountain dreams through the use of practical and wholesome nutrition, while pushing her limits during early morning dawn patrols and long days in the mountain. Alex was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, but after graduating college followed her lifelong dream of heading WEST. She accepted a job in Bellingham, Washington as the corporate dietitian for a local supermarket chain, and there she fell in love with the North Cascades and all they had to offer - skiing, climbing, trail running, and fastpacking. A year later, she and her husband Matt moved to Portland, Oregon, where Alex currently works for Evolution Healthcare and Fitness as their dietitian, specializing in sports nutrition. She offers nutrition consultation to local endurance athletes to help them improve their performance and reach their goals. When Alex isn't in the office, she spends her time playing in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest with her husband. You can find her training for an ultramarathon, climbing ice on volcano headwalls, skiing down couloirs, or rock climbing on some of the North Cascade's finest granite. Her and Matt are passionate "Weekend Warriors," who feel strongly about balancing work with play, and utilizing their limited free time (before work, after work, Saturday, and Sunday) to chase their mountain dreams. Alex Katz and his team at Two Chairs are revolutionizing therapy as we know it. When Alex first noticed the issues with our mental healthcare system, he spent months diving deeper into the subject through extensive research and interviews. He concluded what many of us have felt during our own search for the right therapist - the process is unnecessarily complicated, intimidating, and can leave you feeling defeated before you've even begun. Unlike many of us though, he saw this problem and felt compelled to work toward a solution. And so Two Chairs was born. They are using technology to help better match clients to therapists; they're employing those therapists and handling the business intricacies, allowing clinicians the opportunity to focus on their clients; and they're intentionally designing clinics that feel welcoming and warm to make the act of therapy feel like the self-care tool that it is. All of this work is helping to destigmatize therapy and empower people to take care of themselves in a meaningful way.

Alex Hutchinson: How to Build Up Your Running Mindset R4R 097

Running with an Elite Mindset There has been a lot of talk about breaking the 2-hour marathon over the past year. In 2018 Eliud Kipchoge finished with a time of 2:01:39 at the Berlin Marathon, beating the previous record by over 40 seconds. Many believe that the sub 2-hour marathon will happen in the next five to ten years when just a few years ago scientists were saying that it was impossible for a human to complete such a feat. Completing such an impossible task takes more than just a perfectly fit physical body and optimal running conditions. To break this type of barrier, the mind has to be just as fit as the body. “Your brain has all sorts of very clever and hardwired ways of trying to convince you to stop things that are hard,” says Alex Hutchinson. If there’s one thing that I am certain is hard, it’s running a marathon in under two hours. Alex Hutchinson, Ph.D., is an author and journalist who focuses much of his energies on human endurance research. He is also a former middle- and long-distance runner on the Canadian national team. In today’s episode of the Running for Real podcast, Alex adeptly articulates his thoughts on the impact of running with an elite mindset, and what that means today. This is not one you want to miss. Fads vs Facts Controversy and excitement always surround new inventions and discoveries that help to break world records. It can be difficult to distinguish between what is new and true and what is simply a coincidence (think of any short-lived diet fad). Sometimes it’s less about what works, and more about whether it is fair (like any number of banned drugs). Two interesting and seemingly unrelated ideas that may have an impact on the sub 2-hour marathon are shoes and smiles. The Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4% was the first shoe to cross the finish line in the 2018 Berlin Marathon. This shoe has now been worn by about half of the top 3 runners in each of the major marathons recently. The Nike Zoom Vaporfly is light, well-cushioned, and has a thin carbon fiber plate that supposedly gives a spring-like push to propel the runner forward. Purists argue that this shoe changes the run enough that it is no longer fair to compare those that have run without them, to those that have run with them. The shoes have yet to be banned, but don’t be surprised if broken records aren’t taken as seriously by those that run with them. In a recent experiment, scientists discovered that runners who smiled during a run compared to those that frowned, experienced a running economy that was 2% better. Smiling, whether naturally or deliberately, has been found to increase productivity, healing-rate, and a number of other things over the years. But is smiling always a positive thing? For Alex Hutchinson it’s about the situation. While training Alex realized that when he smiled, he felt surprisingly better. He finished a set with more energy, but his pace also slowed. Obviously, running slower makes you feel better.  However, when Alex is running paced splits, he does the best he can to relax his face. When you know your pace won’t change, then smiling can reap the benefits. But if an intense face is what gets you running fast, then put on your best snarl. In general, it is better to mix things up occasionally. Do Your Workout, Not the “Best” Workout Another common pitfall when training is to compare your training program to your competitors’. You know your body better than anyone, and doing your workout can be much more effective than doing someone else’s. Alex gives an example of changing his training to match one of his friends. Both Alex and his friend would beat each other in races about the same number of times, but Alex’s friend had a training program that was much more grueling. When Alex tried to complete a similar training session, he felt defeated, not able to even finish the workout. But he remembered that he could compete in the actual race with his own workout. An important part of an elitist mindset is faith in your way. If you believe in your stride, your training, and your body, you can spend less time comparing yourself and more time winning. A Progressive Mindset A great mindset to have when running a long-distance race is a progressive one. Start off the race with less intense, more relaxed thoughts, and as you near the finish line, have thoughts that give you the grit you need to dig deep. Sport psychologists recommend having planned thoughts during certain parts of a race. For example, plan on thinking about your dream home during mile 5-8, think about your form during mile 12-14, and think about that bully from middle school during mile 22-23. It’s just as important to exercise your mind as it is your body. Smile and snarl with purpose. Visualize and meditate. Practice having different thoughts during your workouts and see what works best for you. As you practice, you will find a mindset that helps you become the runner you want to be.  Resources: (Book) Endure Alex’s Twitter Alex’s Website Trent Stellingwerff’s Twitter   The wonderful sponsors for this episode is ME about my new book and Inside Tracker.
