For this episode we're joined all the way from Harlem in New York City by venerable hip hop writer Havelock Nelson. The first rap editor at industry bible Billboard talks about his early years in his birthplace Guyana and his love of marching bands in the country's capital Georgetown. From there we hear about his family's move to Brooklyn in 1973 and his early exposure to rap and breakbeat tapes in high school. Havelock recalls the pioneering hip hop fanzines Word Up! and Black Beat – plus the seminal rap writings of Greg Tate and Nelson George – before recounting his experiences as a columnist on Billboard. He also explains the genesis of Bring the Noise, the 1991 "guide to rap music and hip-hop culture" he co-authored with fellow RBP contributor Michael A. Gonzales. Mention of our guest's 1994 interview with the Notorious B.I.G. takes us into discussion of the synergy between hip hop's rising stars and rap media such as The Source magazine. Havelock also reflects on memorable interviews he did with the likes of KRS-One, Slick Rick, LL Cool J and Salt-N-Pepa. The latter duo takes us into audio clips from an audio interview with a Virginia-born artist who was profoundly influenced by them: the one and only Missy Elliott, speaking to Sara Scribner after the release of 1997's debut album Supa Dupa Fly... followed by the voices of her collaborators Timbaland and Magoo. The publication of Taschen's monumental new 75 Years of Atlantic Records prompts reflections on the legendary label co-founded by the late Ahmet Ertegun, plus our thoughts on the present-day roster that includes Charli XCX, Bruno Mars, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. The episode concludes with quotes from newly-added library pieces about artists such as Wee Willie Harris, Jeff Barry & Ellie Greenwich, the Pharcyde and André 3000. Many thanks to special guest Havelock Nelson. Find his writing on Rock's Backpages and join his Going Way Back group on Facebook. Unraveling the "Birther Incident" and Trump's Rise to Power Welcome to a riveting episode of Right On Radio's Friday show, where the host dives deep into a myriad of topics that are bound to keep listeners on the edge of their seats. Starting with "Word Up, Word On," the audience's beloved word game show, we explore the word of the day from multiple sources, a delightful tradition even if some recent picks have stirred some controversy. The episode transcends into a captivating discussion about former President Donald Trump's political maneuvers and the notorious "Birther Incident." The host recalls the pivotal dinner at the White House that might have catapulted Trump into the political spotlight, predicting the ongoing unravel about Obama's citizenship claims. Follow along as the narrative weaves through an exploration of the recent significant ramifications due to the possible invalidity of acts during Obama's and Biden's terms, suggesting a wave of global impact. Especially with Cash Patel's prominent role, reminiscent of a detective novel, determined to expose fraud and corruption at the highest levels. As the episode unfolds, listeners can anticipate intriguing insights into Doge Dividends, shedding light on how Musk and Trump allegedly plan to reward citizens amidst fraud exposés using AI technology. In yet another twist, the host teases about the potential spectacle of Fort Knox's live audit and the implications for U.S. economics. The conversation takes a thought-provoking turn exploring the distribution of power within the U.S. government, the role of AI, and Trump's strategic governance. Drawing parallels with cartoonish dichotomies of good and evil, the host forecasts an America where AI influences modern policymaking, with Trump starring at the helm. Throughout, there's a reminder of the show's underlying spiritual narrative, weaving in biblically themed insights aimed at offering a beacon amidst geopolitical confusion. Finishing with wellness tips and sponsored recommendations, the episode closes on an optimistic note, urging listeners to stay engaged, aware, and ever inquisitive. merritt k (writer) joins the show for the very first time to discuss a rare Bluesky block from video game developer and noted weirdo Brianna Wu. In addition to discussing the moon we also discuss Canada, as merritt has moved back home and that leads to talks of Doug Ford's "Buck a Beer" campaign strategy, No Frills commercials, the racist Trader Joe's logos, catnip, and Dan gets in trouble from his landlord, who watched the show on YouTube and saw something he didn't like. Plus, merritt gets in trouble from zoomers for a tweet, JD Vance visits a donut shop, and babies apparently can't say the word popsicle. Holy hell! Kick us into a pit, we've reached Episode 300! Nick Wiger (Doughboys) joins us to celebrate almost six years of this show by getting blocked by a right-wing-leaning account for telling them straight up that their hero died jacking off. Thankfully we don't die on this episode as we debut our brand-new theme song (thanks to the wonderful Howell Dawdy) and get into the Despicable Me/Minions franchise, which of course, leads to a wide-ranging Rule 34 discussion. It wouldn't be Episode 300 without it. Plus, Wiger details how a book has helped him mostly quit social media, JD Vance brags that he's starting the new Entourage, and our friend Josiah has some fun with the entire country of Australia thanks to a Bluey tattoo tweet. If you wanted to get a tattoo of our show...please don't. But! That probably means you are a big fan, and you should maybe think about donating to us over at patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every month! This week, Lane Moore rejoins the show for another instalment of Word Up!, where we find the worst that Cameo [dot] com has to offer. It's a great time and you won't wanna miss it. We also have ad-free episodes, a Discord, and more, so donate today! Nick Wiger is a podcaster whose two pods, Doughboys and Get Played, are available now wherever you get your podcasts. It's a real "remember some times" episode as we discuss X-rated video games, games that are banned from Twitch, Outlaw Golf, Grand Theft Auto, smoking weed in college, and Sam tells us how he randomly ended up seeing the Michael Jackson concert documentary film "This Is It". Plus, Sam gives us an update on his Facebook feed, Republicans are being weird about being called weird, and John relives an old, funny viral tweet. If you want to relive a bunch of old tweets (and moments) with us, then head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty and support the show! For $5/month, you'll get THREE new bonus episodes every month, PLUS you get immediate access to our entire back catalogue of bonus content, totalling some 200 episodes. What a deal! Last week, Demi Lardner joined us as we attempt to clear out every mailbag question we've ever been asked in our 50th mailbag, and this week, our friend Dead Blossom Jesse returns to help us finish the job. Also: ad-free episodes, merch discounts, Discord access, and MORE! Check it out! REMINDER: Blocked Party is going LIVE once again this fall! Bryan Quinby and Chris James are joining us for Top Three Weekend II, with "Guys" going live for the first time, "Word Up!" going live for the first time, and live episodes of Blocked Party and Not Even a Show rounding out the weekend. It's October 11th and 12th at the Biltmore Cabaret in Vancouver and we hope you'll join us! Weekend passes available now at bit.ly/top3weekend. Sam Burns is a comedian and his first special, "LMNOP", is out NOW on his YouTube. You can also follow him on Instagram at @samsamburns. This episode is available in video format on our YouTube. Quantum Week is a nostalgia music and movie show, where we leap into a random week of a random year and talk about its hit movie and song. On this episode of Quantum Week Briggs and Matt talk "Crocodile Dundee", and "Word Up" by Cameo. Follow us on: Twitter:
In this MK Ultra age of propaganda, lies and gas-lighting a fine-tuned BS-meter is essential. A good sense of humor will get you the rest of the way home, and this week's Alfacast guest is armed with both. Dani Katz is a Languaging expert and a catalyst for accelerated evolution. With a background in journalism + consciousness expansion, and a focus on root causes + solutions, Dani has dedicated her career to supporting individuals in claiming their empowerment, agency and authenticity; and in optimizing organizations, systems and societies with Quantum Languaging. A lifelong learner with an unquenchable thirst for capital-T Truth, Dani pushes every possible edge to its outermost limit - both to transform and awaken her own consciousness, as well as to pave new pathways for the brave, bold badasses she works with. Dani walks her talk, and leads by example, modeling the highs and lows of the transformational path with humor, heart and authenticity, utilizing her decades of devotion to her own healing, whole-ing and awakening to support her coaching + consulting clients. A trained investigative reporter (MA, USC) with a keen eye for bullshit, a yen for pattern recognition, and a bold-ass voice, Dani has spent more than two decades exposing injustice, unearthing deep Truths, and helping folks safeguard and cultivate their critical thinking. As a journalist (LA Weekly, Los Angeles Times, Vice, Plandemic 2: Indoctornation) turned cultural critic/podcaster (Words Podcast, Word Up with Dani Katz) with an eye for root causes and win/win solutions, Dani doesn't simply illuminate society's shadows, and leave it at that; she goes the extra mile to offer practical remedies and action steps that empower folks to uplift and evolve their world for the better. Dave Merheje (comedian) joins the show in-person for the first time to tell us about different blocking patterns with two exes, one of which leads to a very interesting reveal. Dave immediately connects with Dan on the episode as we discuss Dan's can situation, the few times Dave stayed with John over the years, people taking selfies with celebs, meeting fans, expensive train rides, and the Disney Star Wars hotel. Plus, British kids complain about ice cream, Elon Musk wants your family pics on X, Shaq talks that talk to Draymond Green and Jeff Teague explains that the Bucks' victory party wasn't that good. If you want to attend a much better party, head on over to the one we're having on our Patreon, which is at patreon.com/blockedparty. $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every single month, including this week, as Danika Thibault rejoins the show to review some terrible Cameos with us in our Word Up! series. We also have ad-free episodes, video bonuses, an exclusive Discord, and more. Plus! Details on how you can save on a ticket to our upcoming Top Three Weekend II with Guys in Vancouver! Dave Merheje is a comedian whose latest movie, "Sometimes I Think About Dying", may be playing at a theatre near you. You can follow him for all of his dates on his Instagram at @davemerheje. Mayor Young offers his "5 C's" for reducing crime, and Jake fires back with a list of his own. Max the Producer is back with another installment of "Word Up!" Where shall the "Wheel Of Weird" fall today? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Adam Christie (comedian) returns to the show for his first main episode in over 4 years! Part of the reason he hadn't returned to the show is because no one had blocked him. But then Becca volunteers...and hilarity ensues. Hilarity also ensues the entire episode as Stefan shows us an insane picture (what else is new?), Adam attends an eclipse party, Mr. Beast has a new chocolate bar, and we go long on micropenises. Plus, Keith Lee visits Toronto, a Zoom presentation goes wildly wrong, and Elon Musk goes to court, though he isn't exactly sure who sued him. If you want to avoid being sued by us, you can donate to the show at patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last week, Bobby Warrener joined the show for a delightful mailbag episode, and this week, it's the return of "Word Up!", our Cameo-based bonus series we have now returned to doing bi-monthly, where we find the absolute worst in celebrity shout-outs. We also have ad-free episodes if you hate the damn ads, a massive back catalogue, a Discord, and more! Adam Christie is a comedian who will be on tour with Randy Feltface this fall, and has lots of fun dates coming up before that as well. You can find out everything you need to know on his Instagram at @adamchristiecomedian. This episode is also available in video format on our YouTube. Learn more about your ad choices. It's the final episode of Freaky February and it's time to take the ultimate challenge: an episode of Howell Dawdy's Fast Track, where we have to write a song in 30 minutes or less. Now, we aren't the musical genius that Howell is, so we decided to write a parody song instead of an actual, "we play the instruments" song, but look...we aren't very good at that either. After canvassing people to find out what the most annoying song at karaoke is, we settled on a parody of "Sweet Caroline", a song we both hate, and of course...we make it about needing to poop really bad. If you have an urge to do something else, why not head on over to our Patreon and support the Blocked Boys doing what they love? It's just $5/month at patreon.com/blockedparty for THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last week, Ivan Decker joined us for the triumphant return of "Word Up!", our Cameo-themed bonus episodes, and this week, it's the thrilling conclusion of Blocked Party D&D: Season 3, with our good friends Mike and Jesse from Your Kickstarter Sucks. We also have ad-free episodes, merch discounts, and more, so check it out! Howell Dawdy's Fast Track is available wherever you get your pods. You can follow him on Twitter at @howelldawdy and you can donate to his Patreon at patreon.com/howelldawdy. This episode is also available in video format on our YouTube. It's Freaky February and we continue on with an episode of "Dudes", a send-off on our good friend Bryan's podcast "Guys", which is about, well, guys. This week, we have Tony Boswell (Minion Death Cult) joining us to discuss a Dude near and dear to our hearts: the Nu-Metal Dude. We dig into the weird politics around the nu-metal sub-reddit and find a treasure trove of great Ticketmaster reviews of some of your favorite nu-metal bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Disturbed, and Slipknot. Most of the reviews are about parking at the venue. Dudes, as they say, rock. If you wanna rock, you can help support the show by heading over to patreon.com/blockedparty and donating $5/month to help the Blocked Boys. For that $5, you'll also get THREE bonus episodes every single month. Last week, Raft joined us for a mailbag episode, and this week, our famous "Word Up!" bonus episode returns, as we dig into the horrible, terrible, no good world of Cameo [dot] com. We also have ad-free episodes, merch discounts, an exclusive Discord, and more, so check it out! Tony Boswell is one of the hosts of Minion Death Cult, which is available wherever you get your pods. You can follow him on Instagram at @wordisbondtv. "Guys" is a podcast hosted every week by Murder Bryan and Chris James, and is also available wherever you get your pods. You can donate to their Patreon at patreon.com/murderxbryan. This episode is also available in video format on our YouTube. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Freaky February continues as we do an episode of one of our very favourite podcasts, and in fact, the first podcast John ever listened to, Stop Podcasting Yourself! We are very pleased to be joined by one of SPY's own hosts, Dave Shumka, as we discuss "Mean Girls: The Musical", the time that Yahoo! hired Snow (yes, the Canadian white rapper Snow) to do its hold music, and John working out too hard and being unable to move for a week. Plus, we dive into your Overheards and Overseens and don't worry, when BP does SPY...it IS that kind of show. If you want more of this kind of show, head on over to patreon.com/blockedparty, where $5/month gets you access to THREE bonus episodes every dang month! This week, Raft rejoins the show for our first-ever mailbag with them, and it was, predictably, a real delight. Plus, we couldn't just let Sweeps Month go by without doing something special, so next week, our Cameo series, "Word Up!" makes its triumphant return to the bonus feed. We also have ad-free episodes, merch discounts, and much more, so head on over there and support the show today! Dave Shumka is one of the two hosts of Stop Podcasting Yourself, which is available wherever you get your podcasts. You can also hear his work as a producer as part of the "Let's Make A..." series and "This Sounds Serious". You can follow him on Twitter at @daveshumka.
