Gavin and Elliot open off-script. Mo Salah's departure from Liverpool has just been confirmed, and before Arsenal business gets underway there's a moment worth taking — a reflection on legacy, on how elite players leave, and on a contrast with another Liverpool exit that the hosts find hard to ignore. The international break dominates the main agenda, and the "six Arsenal withdrawals" story that has dominated the back pages gets looked at properly. The hosts work through who has actually pulled out, why the circumstances around each case are very different, and what Saka and Rice being handed a week off quietly reveals about how Arteta is managing this period of the season.Fixture congestion and the international calendar come into focus, with PSG's approach to domestic postponements adding some colour to a broader conversation about how the game is being structured at the top level. There's a detour worth taking — into whether Arsenal's constant presence in the headlines is as damaging as it feels. The Arteta media narrative gets examined, and the hosts have a take on it that may not be what you're expecting. Then the episode arrives at its core. Ståle Solbakken has spoken publicly about Ødegaard's mental state, and the hosts don't shy away from it. What his return means tactically, what formation gives Arsenal their best chance in the run-in, and where Zubimendi fits into that picture are all on the table. There's also a wider conversation about the burden Ødegaard carries into the summer — one that goes beyond anything Arsenal-related.Pre-season gets a brief moment. Arsenal are confirmed for Dublin against Real Betis on August 5th, with the shape of the summer starting to come into view. The episode closes on the IFAB rule changes arriving at the 2026 World Cup — five-second countdowns, the substitution clock, injured players leaving the field, expanded VAR, and the Premier League's decision to opt out of corner scrutiny. Arsène Wenger's offside proposal and the thirty-minutes-of-ball-in-play idea also come up. Neither lands without challenge.Chapters:(00:00) - Arteta's Non-Negotiables & Intro(00:53) - Mo Salah's Liverpool Exit(07:34) - International Break Withdrawals: The Full Picture(09:44) - Saka & Rice Given a Week Off: Who Is This Break Really For?(14:03) - Fixture Congestion, PSG & the International Calendar Problem(15:58) - Gabriel's Knee & the Media's Dark Arts Narrative(20:04) - Does Arsenal Benefit From Being Everyone's Story?(24:22) - The Arteta Media Narrative: Mandela Effect in Football(29:33) - Ødegaard's Mental State: Ståle Solbakken Speaks(34:55) - The 4-3-3 Must Return: Tactical Reality for the Run-In(39:19) - Did Arsenal Mis-Profile Zubimendi?(45:10) - Ødegaard & Norway's World Cup: The Weight He's Carrying(52:43) - Pre-Season Friendlies: Dublin, Real Betis & Staying Close to Home(55:26) - IFAB Rule Changes: The Good, The Bad & More VAR(01:08:21) - The Wenger Rule & 30-Minute Halves: Football's Worst Ideas?

Episode 342 Social media began with the best intentions - but it soon went sour. Platforms that once fostered connection are now driven by an endless desire to monopolise our time. From the endless scroll to ragebait content, social media is no longer designed to connect us with friends and family - but to profit from our attention. And that's not to mention the damaging political influence it can have. As countries and governments move to act against it, is there a good solution to these problems? Bitcoin is one big disaster for the environment. Mining bitcoin requires an inordinate amount of energy - and that cost only increases as more bitcoin is mined. It's also a terrible investment these days, with some experts suggesting you'd be better off buying a load of Pokémon cards. Adding to that its role in fuelling crime on the dark web - and it becomes a strong contender for worst idea of the 21st century. Carbon off-sets - another well intentioned solution to the climate crisis that's gone horribly wrong. The idea is you can lessen the environmental impact of your actions, by off-setting the damage. Maybe you take a long-haul flight, but you plant a tree in return. The trouble is, not only does this give people permission to keep polluting the environment, it's not even clear if offsetting actually works. But perhaps it's not all bad? Effective altruism is a surprising addition to the list, given that it's meant to be a way of ensuring money goes to only the best causes. But judging which charities deserve donations above others is much more difficult than it seems. And part of the effective altruism movement suggests people should earn as much money as possible so they can one day give it away - which can obviously end badly. And then there are those who have taken it too far - ruining their life. One seemingly good fix for environmental damage is the promise of alternative fuels, like natural gases, hydrogen and biofuels. But it turns out they probably do a lot more damage than good. Biofuels in particular require massive amounts of farmland to produce, which alone is highly polluting. Add to that the fact they're driving up prices at the supermarket - perhaps there's a better way to stop the climate from warming? Hosted by Rowan Hooper and Abby Beall, with guests Matt Sparkes, Leah Crane, Michael Le Page and Joshua Howgego. To read more about these stories, visit https://www.newscientist.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. CAN POLIS SAVE US FROM THE WORST IDEAS? Jon Caldara writes about Governor Jared Polis's last year in charge of the clown show that is the overwhelmingly Democrat controlled Legislature. Now that he's fully engaged in running for President, he needs to shore up his fake libertarian credentials so maybe he will veto the worst ideas. Here's hoping he cares more about that than pissing off the progressive Dems who run the show.

In this second episode of our fascism series, Cameron and Ray trace the roots of fascism from the French Revolution through the 19th century and into the early 20th century. They explore how nationalism, the Enlightenment and Counter-Enlightenment, industrial upheaval, social Darwinism, Nietzsche's philosophy, Bismarck's realpolitik, futurism, and mass psychology all fed into the eventual rise of fascism. Along the way, they compare past anxieties about modernity with today's fears of AI and technology, dig into the religious devotion of MAGA Trumpism, and unpack the Italian Fascist Manifesto of 1919. By the end, the groundwork is set for how Mussolini and others fused these cultural, philosophical, and political threads into a movement that would reshape the 20th century. Why Everything is Propaganda: Connor Boyack's Libertarian Manifesto for July 4

Keen On Democracy

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2025 53:15

If everything is propaganda (even this show), then we are forever engaged in a war to control other people's minds. That, at least, is the view of the self-described “freedom fighter”, Connor Boyack, the libertarian author of the best-selling Tuttle Twins series of children books. In his latest piece of Tuttle Twins propaganda, A Guide to the World's Worst Ideas, Boyack argues against all forms of government welfare, drug prohibition and foreign military engagement. And yet there's one institution that the Utah based Boyack religiously supports. The family, he says, offers protection for children and should be actively protected by the government. Children of the world unite, some might respond, you've got nothing to lose but your parents. 1. Everything is Propaganda - And That's Fine "Tuttle twins, quote me now, is libertarian propaganda. And I use that word intentionally because what is propaganda? Propaganda is just propagating an idea from one person's mind to another. It is persuasion. It is education. Everything is propaganda."2. America Isn't Really Free "I'm quite a libertarian and everywhere I look, there's a lot of reasons to think we're not independent. We threw off the shackles of Britain so long ago and if those same patriots and founding fathers who were part of constructing a new country could see all the heavy programs and taxes and all the things now, I think they'd have a thing or two to say about it."3. Foreign Intervention Creates More Problems "Look at Iran. Everyone's freaking out about Iran. But Iran, the whole conflict started in 1953 when the CIA waged a coup along with the UK and overthrew the democratically elected leader that led to the hostage crisis in 79, which led to of the destruction in the decades since."4. Family is the Natural Form of Government "I see the family and parents as the breeding ground of freedom, the natural form of governance... between Totalitarianism on the one hand and the naked individual on the other looms the first line of resistance against totalitarianism, and that is the economic and politically independent family."5. Drug Prohibition Mirrors Failed Alcohol Prohibition "Look prohibition, I think there's common like there's there's general consensus that the alcohol prohibition of a century ago didn't work But it's that same sentiment that fuels the drug war today, which of course has led to cartels It's led to fentanyl. It's lead to all of these problems where people are being harmed and dying."When somebody claims that everything is propaganda, you know that something isn't. There's always some ideological “truth” at the heart of all everything-is-ideology messages. For the freedom fetishizing Boyack, it's the “natural” truth of the family. But I'm not convinced. As Philip Larkin wrote, “They f**k you up, your mum and dad.” Equally troubling, they infect you with bad ideas. So my message this July 4 week to all American kids: don't trust anything your mom or dad reads to you. It's bound to be propaganda. Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. Back from a summer break, Barry and Kevin are again ready to ruminate and pontificate on the practice of family law.  They are joined today by Chicago Attorney Clare McMahon from Hoffenberg & Block , who bravely wades into this wide-ranging discussion about the "Best Ideas and Worst Ideas in Family Law."  In this Episode 38 - recorded in early December, 2022, Clare, Barry and Kevin gather around the (virtual) table to debate and explain some basic family-law concepts, as well as more-complicated techniques and battle-proven strategies.  These three experienced attorneys pull out some tools from the family-law toolbox (some well-known and others not-so-well-known) , examine them in the light of experience, and discuss how they are useful, time-wasting or harmful.  Terms and phrases like, "Discovery," "Deposition," "Deception," "Testimony," "Spew," and "Financial Affidavit" are tossed around freely, and mixed in with some war stories, anecdotal evidence and questionable opinionating.  Why can't these intelligent people, these experienced practitioners, simply agree on one, efficient way of doing things?  Could it be that practicing family law is more art than science?  Might the complexity of human relationships have something to do with it?  Listeners to this cacophonous, unscripted debate may learn some secrets of navigating family-law disputes arising from broken dreams, broken promises and broken relationships.  They may even gain some hope, inspiration and a feeling of encouragement.                      ==================Chicago Lawyers Barry C. Boykin and Kevin R. Johnson have more than 50 combined years of experience in Custody, Divorce and other Family Law matters.  They know first-hand the court battles, stress and struggles that people endure as disputes are resolved in the family-court system.                Barry and Kevin work to bring hope and clarity to a troubled world, where lawyers, judges and other professionals see the best and worst of human behavior on public display.      ===================CARPLS - legal resources           www.carpls.orgIllinois Legal Aid Online             www.illinoislegalaid.org================== Who we are:                                                                      Attorney Barry C. In this episode, we'll cover perhaps the five worst ideas in management in no particular order—in the hopes of correcting some errors and keeping the same error from happening again. Stack Ranking Performance Reviews Personality Testing Open Offices Right-Sizing These five ideas are some of the worst in management, but they aren't the only ones. What they have in common, however, is that they share the same root cause. All of these ideas seem logical and well-intentioned at first. Developing a system for providing feedback is great; but the annual review system that it turned into is not. Wanting a more innovative culture is good; but designing your offices to look like startups is not. Testing and experimenting with different ways of leading organizations is great; but blindly following what others call “best practices” is not. Instead, keep experimenting, keep getting feedback from your people, and keep focused on ways your leadership helps everyone do their best work ever. //DO YOUR BEST WORK EVER If you liked this video and you want to help your team do their best work ever, check out the free resources we've compiled at https://davidburkus.com/resources //LIKE THE SHIRT? On this week's episode, writer, Jason Horn and I discuss how cannabis is infiltrating the booze industry, and whether or not this is one of The Booze World’s Worst Ideas! In the second half of the podcast, we interview Abe Stevens, founder and distiller of Humboldt Distillery, found in Humboldt County in northern California, where some of the best marijuana crops in the world grow. Four years ago he launched 'Humboldt’s Finest', a cannabis infused vodka. They were one of the first spirits brands to dip their toes in the cannabis industry and his efforts have recently payed off. This week's cocktail recipe was created after I took the bottle of Humboldt's Finest Vodka home and tinkered with a martini recipe:    Martini Sativa  3 oz Humboldt’s Finest 1/2 oz Dry Vermouth  1/2 oz Olive Brine   Stir all ingredients over ice. We're not naming names - except for the historic fails - and we're doing various tastings with an open mind. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed making it.  This Week's Recipe is from a pitch from a hotel trying to capitalize on the royal wedding. In honor of the groom... Hooray for Harry 1 oz Grey Good Vodka 1 oz Red Bull Poured over ice in a Collin's glass. Cucumber Garnish. links:  Jason Horn's Twitter: @messyepicure themessyepicure.com   Bit by a Fox: blog: http://bitbyafox.com instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bitbyafox/ facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BitByAFox/ twitter: https://twitter.com/bitbyafox music: https://www.humanworldwide.com

I remember Greg Wyshynski way back when ... Fellow It's All Journalism producer Julie O'Donoghue and I worked together for years at The Connection Newspapers in Northern Virginia. She covered politics and I was one of the community editors. Greg was the guy who ran the sports department, dividing his time between covering high school field hockey games and blogging about hockey separate from the newspaper. He also spent a stint running the Connection's entertainment page. The one thing that was consistent, no matter what Greg was writing about, it was going to be fun and more often than not, very funny. He even wrote a book â€" "Glow Pucks and 10-cent Beers: The 101 Worst Ideas in Sports History," which he calls the best reviewed bathroom reader. So, when Greg left The Connection, it was pretty clear he was on an upward arc and he was going to end up doing something fun and probably very funny. Flash forward to today and Greg is the editor of Puck Daddy, the highly entertaining and informative Yahoo! hockey blog. There, he applies his talent for finding whimsy in the serious sports world. In addition, Greg also brings his whimsical POV to the podcasting world via the "Marek Vs. Wyshynski" podcast. Indulge as we catch up with an old friend.
