Yes It is time for that chat ... Is Questin Tarantino the most unoriginal man in Hollywood, a petty thief with no soul - or is he a great auteur playing around with cinematic conventions and form? Regardless of how you feel about QT however, he loves cinema, and is likely the most vocal film buff of any living director, not to mention listmaker and promoter. No living director appears to be more vocally focused on what he is leaving behind than Questin Tarantino. His promise is clear: His next film will be his last. He wants to leave behind a perfect set, a work to be proud of - he does not want to grow state or lose touch - but - did he ever have the touch - or was he always a hack? Has he ever had an original idea or made a remotely great film? In this episode Chris, Clem and Matthieu will throw their hats in the ring, talk through his filmography - in particular Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction - and also try to answer the burning question: Will he actually be able to stop?

The pasuk says in Mishlei , "בטח אל ה' בכל ליבך, ואל בינתך אל תישען"- We are supposed to trust in Hashem with all of our heart, and never rely upon our wisdom. Rabbenu Yona gives one application of this pasuk. If someone, let's say, devises a plan of action that seems to be guaranteed for success, he must convince himself that it will not be his strategy that brings about success. The only determinant of success is Hashem." The next pasuk says, "בכל דרכיך דעהו” which Rabbenu Yona explains to mean, "In every endeavor that a person sets out to embark upon, he must take to heart, that only Hashem will bring him success." This pasuk , he says, is an addition to the previous one. Because there are people who only feel the need to ask Hashem for help when it comes to big things. But in their everyday errands and affairs, they don't feel the need to ask for His help. For those people, this pasuk is reminding us, "בכל דרכיך דעהו"- In everything we do, we must remember Hashem. Even for the simplest and smallest things, recognize, we cannot do them without Hashem’s help. Rabbenu Yona writes further: There are people whose eyes are turned towards Hashem when they go on a long and potentially, dangerous journey. But when they go down the block, they're not thinking about Hashem. There are multiple reasons for this, he says. One is because they feel they could for sure accomplish this small task without having to ask Hashem for help. Another reason is because it's not that important to them either way. If they get the small thing accomplished, good. And if not, it's not a big deal. For those attitudes, we need chizuk: "בכל דרכיך דעהו" The pasuk is telling us, it does not matter if it's easy to accomplish, or if it's not that important. In everything that we do, we must realize, we could only accomplish it with Hashem’s help. And therefore, we must constantly ask Him for help. Rabbenu Yona continues: "If a person does a small chore, and is successful with it, but he didn't remember Hashem, he is considered to be lacking in his Avodat Hashem . He did not fulfill this pasuk of בכל דרכיך דעהו"." Furthermore, we must know, the rewards for thinking about Hashem in our endeavors, will be far greater than what we actually accomplish in those endeavors. For example, if someone calls up a buyer to try to sell him a product, and he remembered that it's all dependent on Hashem and nothing that he says is really what's going to get him to say, "Yes”- It's all Hashem. Even if he will get an enormous order from that phone call, the rewards he will get for remembering Hashem at that time, will be much greater. With this knowledge, we can now be considered successful in every endeavor we undertake, for the rest of our lives. If we will remember Hashem in all of them, it'll be an automatic success. And if we accomplish what we want, then it's an extra bonus. We don’t have to ever feel like we wasted time and effort, because even if we don't get what we want, if we thought about Hashem, we'll be rewarded for the fact that we did it with Hashem in mind. Then the pasuk concludes, if a person honestly believed that it was only Hashem that determines his success, then "הוא יישר אורחותיך"-Hashem will bring about success to that endeavor. And he will get that added bonus, besides for the unfathomable rewards of his Bitachon.

If I've quoted it once, I've quoted it a thousand times: JesusWhen you pray, believe that you have what you've asked for and it shall be given to you. Have you ever stopped to consider the idea that maybe this isn't JUST a formula for how to get the things that you want? Yes… It is certainly the energetic reality of how to pray and get the things you want. I regularly refer to this truth on The New Age Christian Podcast, but it isn't the only implication of the statement. Underneath the primary intention of the statement, I believe Jesus was pointing us to a deeper truth of the fact that this is how the universe works. Simply put… You HAVE everything you've BEEN believing for! You might be thinking, “But Austin, I never prayed for sickness, debt, and turmoil.” To which I say, sure, you might have never officially gotten down on your knees and ‘prayed' for those things, but have you ever considered that prayer NEVER stops? If you're a New Age Christian (or you're at least listening to this podcast), I'm going to assume that you've started to understand just how ‘normal' our spirituality really is. There is no separation between you and God. You ARE the physical manifestation of God in individual form. As such, what you think IS prayer. In the Bible, Paul encourages us to ‘pray without ceasing'. I would argue that you've been doing that your whole life; you just didn't know it. Transcript Annie: Can self-love and a desire to change your physical being co-exist or are they a contradiction of one another? The answer to that question is debatable depending on who you’re asking. On one hand of the body positive camp say body love and weight loss can not co-mingle while it seems as if the rest of the diet industry requires a certain amount of body dissatisfaction as a prerequisite to change. There is no doubt in our minds that the push for body acceptance of all shapes and sizes is a much needed message but what about those individuals who want self-acceptance and still desire to change their bodies?This is a quite complex and messy topic and on today’s episode Jen, Lauren and I share Balance365’s stance on how you can strive for change that’s rooted in self-love and acceptance and joy. Ladies, welcome back to another episode how are you? Lauren: Good. Annie: Why? Why can’t you just answer the question? Jen: I feel like you need to address us individually because what happens is, what people can’t see behind the scenes is we are actually on a video conference call looking at each other so then you are like “Ladies, how are you?” and then Lauren and I stare at each other waiting for the other ones to answer first. Lauren: Who’s going to go first? Annie: Quit being so polite and just answer the question. Lauren, how are you doing? Lauren: I am so wonderful, how are you? Annie: I am golden, thank you. Jen, how are you? Jen: Also wonderful. Annie: I feel like that was just so surface-level answers but we’ll go with it. Jen: Well, if you want to do a deep dive in my problems lately. Annie: Would you like to schedule a coaching call with one of the Balance365 coaches. Jen: Well, I need a new podcast called the Jen show. And I’ll just get all weeps and vent. Annie: I do feel like you’ve used some of our podcast episodes to kind of sort through some of your own issues about exercise. Jen: Yeah, but you know what? It’s helpful for people because my problems are their problems. That’s the narcissist in me. I struggle with things a lot of women struggle with. It can be helpful to go through it with a coach. I actually have a really good idea for a podcast series and that’s to bring on Balance365ers on to the podcast and coach them through whatever block they’re struggling with and sending that out to all of our listeners. Don’t you think that’s a good idea? Annie: I do, yeah and all jokes aside, you’re right, you do have a problems. Jen: I am your average busy working mom that struggles to make time for self care and yeah, that’s why I think our podcast resonates with so many women because we all have surpassed 200,000 downloads I’ll just add that in too. We are not standing on our high horses telling everybody what to do, we struggle with all the same things, have struggled in the past currently or we may in the future so yeah, we’re all in this together. I hope everybody feels that way when they listen and talk to us. Annie: I feel like that just got really serious, like we started out all jokey. Lauren: It started out all good and quickly. Annie: You can always count on Jen- Lauren: To make it an intense counselling session. Annie: To turn it into a serious, sentimental intense conversation. Jen: I’m an INFJ. I like intense conversations. Lauren: I don’t remember what my letters are but they’re the opposite of Jen. Jen: Yeah, we could have called that without you going through the test. Annie: OK. All jokes aside, we do have a kind of a heavy topic today, it’s something, it’s a question that comes up so frequently in our community, so frequently in the diet and fitness world and something that we’ve addressed inside our community but not on the podcast yet and that is “Can you love your body and still want to change it?” and by changing it we mean address your body composition, gain weight, lose weight, change your appearance of some sort and that’s a pretty big snowball to tackle, right? And depending on who you ask you’re likely to get a variety of answers. Extreme body positive activists will tell you that body love and weight loss cannot co-exist, do not co-exist and on the flip-side many professionals in our industry or the diet industry in general as a whole that support weight loss believe that self loathing and body dissatisfaction is a prerequisite to changing a body and here we are as the 3 co-founders of Balance365 yet again in the messy middle, right? Lauren: Yup. Jen: Yup: Annie: And so we’re, you know, again, the answer to that question is going to depend on what camp you’re asking, right? So we’re going to answer this question or discuss some of the talking points that we consider when helping our community members evaluate “Can you love your body and still want to change it? Can they co-exist?” and I think we can all agree that this body acceptance movement or accepting yourself at every shape and size is a much needed message for our culture. But what we’re experiencing is that those who still want to make changes are kind of like, “Well, what about me? What do I do? What, like, how, where do I fall into?” and sadly, it feels like in some ways the pendulum has swung a bit too far in one direction, especially when members of our community are feeling shamed for wanting to change their body still or they’re keeping it a secret or they’re afraid to tell anyone. And that, to us, isn’t neutral or an expression of body autonomy which we are super supportive and this is tricky because on some levels what we do in Balance365 is give women the tools and support they need to reach their goals, which can include weight loss, while simultaneously encouraging them to love and accept themselves and there are people out there who believe that these two concepts contradict one another, which is kind of the debate of the moment, right? Now in our industry “Can you love yourself and want to change it?” Does that mean that you don’t ultimately love yourself if you still want to change yourself? Do you have any thoughts, Jen? Jen: Well, newsflash, almost any change, lifestyle change you make in your life and do consistently is going to change your body because our bodies are always in flux and although they are a representation of our genetics and our environment, they are also a representation of our habits. So I recently changed my mode of exercise. I have gone a couple years of just doing like shorter more intense workouts and now I’m back into a phase where I have the time and opportunity and support to do some heavy lifting. I’m actually going through the Arms Like Annie program that a lot of women in our community are which is a strength training program, full body strength training program, heavy weights and guess what? My body is going to change because that’s what bodies do, they adapt to the stresses you put them under. So this I really see as a big mindset block for a lot of people, whether it’s trying to hate their body to change or resisting change because they’ve learned to love their bodies. I got some really good advice this last spring. I was struggling with a certain mindset around business and money. I was at a conference and I was talking to a man who has built multiple companies and sold them and is a multi multi millionaire. He told me he lives on a street in San Francisco and sometimes he walks out and looks down the street and can’t believe that he could buy every house on the block if he wanted to. But he grew up extremely poor and so why we connected is because I grew up without a lot of financial privilege and I find that affects me today but the advice he gave me that I now see is so universal, he said “You are so busy fighting battles in your head that you are never going to be able to get out there and fight the war” and I honestly see this as one of those mindset blocks, one of those blocks that women run into like and makes them freeze and then they expend this time and energy on it. Do I want to change my body? Don’t I want to change my body? Why do I want to change my body? And then they’re just missing the whole thing that change needs to come from a place of self care and if you are taking action on something that feels like you are caring for yourself, nurturing yourself, mothering yourself, then who cares what the outcome is? Maybe your body will get smaller, maybe it will get bigger, I don’t know. Annie: You just ran through my 3 bullet points in like five minutes. Jen: I’m sorry. I did not read the outline. Annie: So Jen summarized that so well and so concisely we can just end the podcast now. I’m just kidding but you’re spot on. You’re, it’s such a good point that you’re so busy, what did you say? You’re so busy fighting battles- Jen: You’re so busy fighting battles in your head you’re never going to get out there and fight the war and this is what we deal with in an ongoing basis in Balance365, any of our Balance365ers listening will say, “Yeah, she’s right. I mean there are so many women posting daily working through these mindset blocks” and it’s really those different programmings that we have that keep us from actually taking action and doing the things that we want to do or need to do in our lives to feel our best, like our best selves. Lauren: Yeah I was writing something earlier about this kind of exact thing, like the mindset piece that we put first is so important because when you get through that the nutrition habits and exercise habits are so simple, like they’re simple. What trips us up is like these mindset blocks like you’re talking about. Annie: And you know, I just want to back up too and I hope this is inferred and I hope that you can just sense this about us by the way we carry ourselves and the way our program is written and laid out but we absolutely believe in body autonomy and we believe that the individual has control over who and what they use their body for and for what and how long and that means that we respect to variety of goals women may have for their bodies and women come to our program with goals of building self-love and healthy habits and some come with a clear goal of weight loss and we don’t place moral value on either goal over the other. We believe that they’re all worthy and we’re here to help women achieve their goals, whatever they are. Jen: We have women share with us in Balance365 that once they really get that self acceptance piece and love their bodies they’re so afraid of losing it because nobody wants to go back there once you’re not there anymore you don’t ever want to go back in that space. So then they start the habit building process and they start losing weight and that puts them into a negative space almost of self sabotage because weight loss then becomes triggering to them as in “Wait a sec. I worked so hard to love that body and now it’s changing again” and the other thing like, newsflash, our bodies are always going to change every single day we are getting older so our hormones are changing, we’re  getting wrinkles, we’re, you know, our hair color is changing. I mean, our bodies are always changing and I think that is the biggest acceptance piece that needs to happen is your body is always changing so stop this hypervigilance on trying to control it. Annie: Right and I think that getting clear on the why behind your desire to change your body can help answer some of those questions and so often we see women wanting to change their bodies and it’s rooted in self hate or this misconception that if you fix your body you’ll love your life and your life will be perfect and you’ll have the perfect body or ultimately that you want to feel worthy and you want to feel free of shame and you want to have this loving and belonging and it’s our experience that you can’t hate your body into loving yourself and nor can you hate your body into being healthy and if that had worked I think we would have a heck of a lot more “success stories” in our lives than we really do, right? Jen: The greatest act of self love is loving yourself when you think nobody else will, so when you aren’t fitting into society’s mold of what is lovable, right, so it’s, you know, so if you do have a larger body there is a lot of good and value there of learning to love and accept yourself at a larger size before, you know, before the weight loss journey comes, if it ever comes, you know, whatever your choice but you know, it’s like only loving your kids when they’re well behaved, right, like, when, you can just love your body when it’s doing what you want it to be doing and you can’t just love yourself when your behaviors are on point, right, your nutrition’s on point, your exercise is on point, your rockin’ life, you love yourself but then as soon as your behaviors are off track you’re filled with these self loathing thoughts. That’s not love, that’s just like surface level approval. Annie: That’s conditioned. That’s conditioned love. That’s not and ultimately I think what a lot of us would really like and are striving for is to love ourselves unconditionally. Meaning our body can look a variety of ways, our behaviors can look a variety of ways and we still can treat ourselves with compassion that we would so many other people in our lives. Jen: Yeah, another good analogy I use sometimes with women is I moved into a house, a new house about a year and a half ago and it’s an older house and there was people that lived here before us that decorated, painted, designed to this house in a way that suited them but is not to my tastes at all. So, for example, my bathroom is lime green and I hate it, I hate it but I still love my home. I am still grateful to live in this home. This is the nicest home I’ve ever lived in. Growing up as a little girl my mother couldn’t have dreamed of providing this kind of house for me as a kid so every day I wake up I feel like I’m living in my dream home but my bathroom is lime green. Yes, I do want to change that color eventually. I haven’t yet, it just, I haven’t had time, it has been the right time but eventually I will paint the bathroom, I will do some renovations around this house to change it but that doesn’t, that doesn’t take away from the unconditional love and gratitude I have for this home and I wish that people could feel that way about their bodies. Sometimes there are changes that you want to make and as long as those are realistic and within your realm of control the problem is there is just such polarizing views. There’s this whole view that you mentioned at the start, Annie ,there’s this whole idea that you have complete control over what your body looks like and then there’s the other end of the spectrum people saying “You actually have no control over what your body looks like so don’t even bother thinking about it” but I think it was Dr Tracy Mann, we’re interviewing her on our podcast pretty soon here which is really exciting but she has in her books that studies in her book Secrets From The Eating Lab, studies show that it’s in the middle, you know, as usual, we actually do- Lauren: That messy middle.   Jen: Yes, like you can’t change your genetics, of course, but there are certain behaviors we have in our life that will affect the way our bodies look and feel and I think her stats are we have about a 30 percent, 30 percent of the way we look is we’re able to manipulate, which is probably a lot less than some people think and a lot more than other people think and so it’s OK. It’s OK. You can have total love for your body. You can have gratitude for the body that you were given. You can have acceptance of the genes that you have and you can still say, “You know what, I would love to reduce my abdominal body fat and I am going to step forward making change in a way that will reduce the fat I have on my body and that is coming from a place of self-love and self care and also being realistic.” Annie: And I think the important distinction there, Jen, that you’re, in terms of your bathroom, is striving for change doesn’t mean that there’s anything wrong with it, it’s just different. It’s not good or bad- Jen: Yeah. Annie: I mean I mean to you the lime green might be bad but- Jen: Yeah, I mean, but how some people behave about their bodies is that, taking it back to the house, they would just throw gas around this house and light it on fire like that because they don’t like the way the bathroom looks and here’s the thing, it’s also knowing that there’s a time to address that and not right, like, I have recognized over the last 18 months that trying to make any changes to the interior of my home were just not realistic. I just haven’t had the time or the resources or the money to pay somebody so we haven’t done it and there’s a time to change and then there’s a time to hold the line and just, but you can still wake up every morning and be grateful, right, like it doesn’t have to be something urgent in, like, you know, you can’t love yourself or respect yourself until you have this but I mean, we talk about it in terms of bodies but I mean there’s a lot of people that get hysteria over their house as well because it’s where they live in. Annie:  Yeah or you love your job, you enjoy your job but you want to improve in a particular skill set or – Jen: Yes. Annie: You enjoy your marriage, you love your spouse, your partner, your significant other but you wish you could spend more time on date nights or as you noted you love your children but you wish they would listen better at bedtime but you can, we believe wholeheartedly, that you can want to change an aspect or an element of yourself, your appearance, your being, whatever it is and that come from self love, that come from a place of love and care and admiration for yourself, versus- Jen: It’s not that you are more or less worthy with these changes, which is really that key component, right, like I go in and color my hair, I get blonde highlights every 3 or 4 months or so or 10 months. And it’s like, I just like it and I don’t see myself as the less worth, if I, you know, for whatever reason, if I had to go back to my, you know, grow it all out and have it just have my natural hair color, I wouldn’t be like, you know, feeling awful about myself, it would just be “Oh, like, I love coloring my hair. I wear makeup, you know.” There’s all these things, right but like- Lauren: Our outward appearance can be an expression right we are and people have different preferences, people like different hair colors and different hair styles and different makeup styles, that’s OK. It doesn’t mean like we don’t love ourselves if we’re not wearing makeup and that’s how we can use that analogy when we’re talking about our bodies. Like, you don’t have to, we say this all the time, you don’t have to love every little tiny part to love the whole, right? Annie: That’s exactly how I feel about muscles, to me they’re like an accessory, like they’re like my favorite accessory. It is honestly, it’s an act of self-expression for me to have visible muscles. Now if for whatever reason I didn’t have the visible muscles, you know, it might be an adjustment but I ultimately know that I am a human of value, of worth, just innately, not because I look a certain way, not because I can do certain things in the gym with my muscles that look a certain way. I just have value because I’m a human, as do all all women, and I mean and it’s so easy for us to see as mothers and all, we could say the same thing about our kids, like, why do our kids have value? Just because they are, just because they’re beings, they’re living, breathing humans but to give ourselves that same sense of value and worth seems so difficult. Jen: Yeah I think what happens is people, they just, they overthink this and it gets people in a tizzy on both ends whether it’s from believing you can’t love yourself until you look a certain way or believing that if you’re making changes you don’t love yourself, you know, there’s just way too much overthinking going on. Annie: So what with the approach that we’ve already kind of touched on that we take in our program is we encourage our members to adopt a self-love approach to change and if weight loss is the way in which you want to change your body, it can be a by-product of your habits and a way that you care for yourself. Jen: Yeah and it’s always a byproduct of your habits, always, right? So when you are, like, we’ve covered this in previous podcasts, but you can’t just say, snap your fingers and lose 10 pounds. Annie didn’t snap her fingers and grow muscles. All changes are a byproduct of our habits and so once you start looking at changes as a byproduct of your habits then you can look at the habits required and or the skills you need to develop in order to see that change and you can decide if that is self love and self care for you, right? Annie: And you posed a really great question, a thread came up in Balance365 last week and the question you posed in response to her is “Is this goal about health and love and self-care or is this about achievement and ideal?” Jen: Right. Annie: And that can maybe help you distinguish the why behind this. Is this coming from a place of love or is this coming from some other place that really isn’t worth perpetuating. Jen: Right, like I could be leaner than I am right now, I am quite comfortable in my body with my body weight but I have been 20 to 25 pounds leaner than I am now. I can go back to that life but there is a point where the extreme that I would have to take goes from a place of self-love and self care into self harm, right, so I, you know, I eat really balanced meals, I pay attention to my nutrition, eat when I’m hungry, stop when I’m satisfied, exercise regularly, take care of my mental health. If I wanted to lose 20 pounds at this point I would have to pay very, very close attention to my nutrition and to me that takes me into a place of self harm and it doesn’t feel well and that’s sort of my guiding compass as far as is this coming from a place of self care or is this coming from a place of self harm? Lauren: I really like that, like, how does it feel? Jen: How does this feel for you? Yeah. Annie: Yes And unfortunately there are people in our industry that would encourage you to power through that feeling. Jen: They do all the time in the fitness industry. All the freaking time. Annie: They would say “This is a prerequisite. This is a requirement that you regulate this negative self talk or pushing yourself past this comfort zone is something that’s required to achieve these goals that are ultimately of high value, right?” Jen: They describe it as a plateau, right, that you have to push through, which sometimes it, like, I mean, that’s the thing about, you’ve really got to know yourself, right, because sometimes there’s value in pushing through, right, like sometimes you don’t, every time it gets hard you don’t want to give up and walk away. Sometimes there’s hard things that you have to work through but the self harm piece is like “Is this sustainable for you? Are you willing? Are you going to do this forever?” And there’s been different times in my life, like for example, right now I get up at 5:30 in the morning to work out and start my workout at 6 and yeah, there are some days that I don’t want to do that but I push through and I’m always happy afterwards. Right now that behavior comes from a place of self care. When I had a newborn, if I would have insisted on that behavior with a newborn baby when I wasn’t sleeping all night and I was pushing myself to get up at 5:30 to work out at 6, that becomes self harm, right, because it means I am going with less and less and less sleep. I’m not even getting enough sleep to recover from my workouts. So those are really self assessment questions that you need to ask yourself and that nobody can answer except for you. Annie: And that’s exactly why we don’t prescribe weight loss or have weight loss goals or goals in general for our community members because no one knows your body better than you do, not even us who work with thousands of women on a daily basis, like, we don’t know you as well as you do and so we really just want to encourage you to pull that reflection inward and say like, “What is this about? Like, can I love my body and want to change it at the same time?” and maybe for you the answer is like “No, I can’t right now. First I have to work on loving myself, you know. Jen: So we recently had a community member share that she thought she had fat loss goals and she was ready to dig in on those fat loss goals but after some self assessment she’s realized that that actually is not a healthy space for her to be in right now and she loves the idea of just focusing on habits and letting her body be what it’s going to be and that is the ultimate form of acceptance for her and that’s where she’s at right now and we are like “A round of applause, girlfriend” because really, all we want for people is to own their life Annie: Yeah, and, you know, just some of these concepts we talk about are kind of heavy and they’re philosophical but, you know, so often what we hear, what this change looks like, this shift which can be so subtle and so small and sometimes you don’t even realize that it’s happening to people around you is that all of a sudden, you know, we’re exercising because, as Jen said, “It leaves me feeling better. I feel more confident. I have more energy throughout the day” versus “I’m getting up at 530 to punish myself because I want to change my body because I hate my body so much and I just can’t stand another day living in my own skin.” I mean, the behavior looks the same on the outside but on the inside, Jen knows this is coming from a place of self-love and self care. Jen: Yeah we often say and I think we’ve said in the podcast before, “it’s not about the what the people are doing it’s about the why and how they go about it.” That’s where the dysfunction and disorder, that’s where it can be found. Annie: Yeah, and I mean, the same can be true for how you feed your body, how you speak to your body and you know, are you feeding yourself balanced meals because your body deserves to be nourished and again, you feel better when you have balanced meals or are you starving or removing whole food groups or eating foods you don’t like because, again, you loathe your body and you want to change it and if you change your body, you change your life and if you change your life then you have less problems.” Jen: Right, the thing I love and I’ll let Lauren elaborate on this but somebody posted in our group in the last, I don’t know, year sometime, she asked about protein bars and she said “But aren’t protein bars diety?” and then you replied, Lauren, do you want to share that? Lauren:  Yes, I don’t remember exactly what I replied but I’ll say what I think about it now. So there’s no, like, diet food or not diet food, right? Like you walk into a restaurant and like two women are eating the exact same thing, they’re both eating a salad and one person restricted themselves and they’re punishing themselves for what they ate yesterday or they’re punishing themselves because they hate their body and the other person is eating to nourish their body and it makes them feel good so that’s why they’re eating their salad, right, like just like Jen said, it’s not always about the what, it’s about the why. Jen: Does it come from a place of deprivation or does it come from a place of abundance and self care? Annie: Exactly and again, they can look the same on the outside. Jen: Exactly. Annie:  On the surface. You might not be able to tell, you might not be able to distinguish and that’s why it’s so important that you get really in tune with yourself and what you’re doing and why you’re doing it and that can help you discern, is this self-love or is this self-hate are these behaviors rooted in? And you know, I just, we say this all the time and it can’t be said enough, we have a saying that “We take great care of things we love and your body is no exception” and I think about all the things that I take care of in my life, between relationships with girlfriends, my children, even my house plants, for heaven’s sakes and I want them to feel comfortable and safe and confident and thrive and grow and expand and live this vibrant life, I’m not degrading them, I’m not starving them, I’m not depriving them. I’m actually treating them really sweetly and kindly and with love and encouragement and sometimes that looks like- Jen: Sometimes there’s tough love built into that. Annie: Yes, like, “Jen, do you want to stay in bed because your bed is warm and cozy and it’s cold outside and it’s dark but I know ultimately this is the goal I committed to and I’m going to feel good” Like, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns. Jen: Absolutely. Actually, my mantra, you know, these days I’ve been struggling a bit. And my mantra is “Mother. I’m mothering myself right now.” Like I have just needed, I have needed some tough love lately and it’s not that I’m, like, being a drill sergeant to myself it’s that “Would my mother let would let me stay up and watch Netflix to 1:30 AM when I have to be up at 6 you know 5 nights in a row?” Like, no, and so that’s sometimes where the tough love has to come in but a mother, well, a mother knows. A mother knows when to push and a mother knows when to pull back, right, we do it for our kids every single day but yet for ourselves it’s like we want to put ourselves into like one box and just like stay there either because we see pendulum swing with self-compassion to, right, we see all the time women are like “Oh I’ve watched Netflix for 3 days but self care, right? and it’s like, “I don’t know. I’m not you so I don’t know if that was self care for you or not but I know for a lot of people you have moved from self care to like numbing and avoiding.” And like you know, like, my mother, if I was sick I might watch T.V. for 3 days but if I wasn’t sick my mother, you know, there’s not a lot of mothers out there who would be letting their kids just sit and watch T.V. for 3 days. Annie: After a day she would be like, “OK get off the couch.” Jen: Get outside, right? My parents used to do that all the time, like, “Get your butts outside now,” right, and so you bring it back to that and go like mother yourself. Have you gotten some fresh air today? Have you gotten some movement in? Are you eating balanced meals? You know, eating, you know, high sugar treats all day long, no that’s not self care day after day after day and that’s certainly not balance. Annie: So, you know, I think, this is just my own personal experience but I’ve heard it echoed in the stories of women we’ve worked with in the past is that they kind of are like, “Yeah, OK, I get that some women love themselves and they’re treating themselves well because they love themselves that much. That’s great for them, however for me I’m used to fueling my workouts and my food and fitness choices from self-hate and I’m worried that if I love myself that I’m just going to become lazy and I’m going to eat all the foods and I’m just going to lose all my motivation and I’m going to get complacent, right?” Jen: That’s how it feels when you’ve been in a place of control for so long, I mean what happens to the teenagers who move out of their family home at 18 that have been living under very rigid controlling rules. They go to college and they go nuts, right? Like we will always rebel against these rules. Annie: Lauren and I are like “Yep.” Jen: Yes, so it’s sort of like, you know, it’s just, it’s human nature, right it’s just human nature and so a lot of people might see their pending swing but eventually you need to like sit up and go and you just need to mother yourself, that’s what you have to do and I find that quite effective in knowing when I need a little tough love and when I need some compassion, right. So if my kids were really emotional, you know, school ends, they’re super emotional, they’re fighting, they’re just not doing well, I can look at them and have some self compassion and go like “These kids are tired, like, we’re going to turn the T.V. on a little early today because they they need some downtime, they need to skip their chores today, they’ve got no energy, you know, or emotional regulation skills like this.” Because you you look at your kids and you just assess, right, you’re always assessing what they need and that changes day to day and I think we can do that for ourselves too. We can do a much better job of it than women traditionally have been doing. We’ve just, we live under so many rules, right, like I just think women actually live under so, not just for ourselves but in our society there are so many rules and a societal construct that women always are living around that I think when we do find ourselves in that space of having free time, we may find ourselves in a rebellious space a lot because we actually have no idea how much unconscious time and energy we spend on, like, subscribing to these rules. Lauren: Preach. Annie: Word. So the anti-climatic answer to our question that I posed at the beginning of this podcast is “Can you love your body and want to change it?” is, I mean, Yes/It really depends and that’s something that you have to answer on an individual level. I personally can sit here and say with great confidence that I have changed my body as a complete act of self-love. Or self-love has resulted in a body change is maybe a better way to put it. But not everyone that changes their body is acting out of self love and vice versa and again our bodies are meant to change they’re fluid. They’re ever changing, they’re always changing, especially as women of childbearing age, I mean, my body looks so different than it did a year ago and I’m 2 plus years postpartum, like, it’s till changing from pregnancy I feel like, I mean, my hair for heaven sakes is still changing. But I think, you know, we’re, as usual, we feel like the truth to that question is somewhere in the middle. We are not on either side of one extreme camp or the other and we really want to help put women in the driver seat to answer that question on their own terms, in a way that serves them and feels good to them and anything we can help women, any way that we can help women come across that answer is good for us. Jen: Yes. Annie: All right, good one. Jen: Lauren will go zip in in the background go ” Preach.” We should get you a t-shirt that says “What she said.” Annie: OK, well, yet another great topic with yet another awkward ending in the bag but this is good. This is a good conversation that I think needed to we needed to address on our podcast because again, we’ve discussed it so many times in our community, which again, if you’re aren’t in there and you want to join it’s Healthy Habits Happy Moms on Facebook. Yes - It's rare but we actually have some good news today. Congress has just passed a bill that will allow terminally ill people with no alternative to try new drugs not yet approved by the FDA. This comes down to property rights. You own your body and you ought to be able to do whatever you want with it. Shockingly there are Democrats in Washington who believe this is a bad thing because it might give people false hope. Really? Who cares! They're dying anyway. Let them have any amount of hope they can. Maybe the placebo effect will take over and they'll be healed by their own mind. :-) Regardless, to deny someone access to drugs because you want to protect them from themselves is both immoral and reprehensible. ***We're also going to discuss the benefits of a flat tax today as a way of keeping government accountable. Over the last few weeks I've been chatting with some wonderful and highly successful authors I might say, and asking them to share with us all their secrets around writing and publishing.   Believe me, if you haven’t had a chance to listen to the previous shows in this series called publishing 101 and you're thinking about writing a book, then may I urge you to do so.  Because if you want to step out with your published book in hand, the information that you get from these gorgeous ladies, is just amazing. So woohoo.   Just imagine how you will feel when your book becomes a reality.    Now obviously there are ways of doing this that will be perfect for you.  Often though it's figuring out what this perfect way looks like and it's by listening to others that we can actually make informed choices and decisions and the authors that I’m chatting with during this series are sharing the most fantastic information, believe me.  And being totally open and honest and sharing with us what worked and what didn't and to me it only makes sense that if we are going to go to all the effort of writing and publishing our unique book, then we need to gather as much of this information as we possibly can before we start the process.   So everyone…. I'm so excited because my guest today is the highly successful author Lisa B, now let me tell you a little bit about this wonderful lady.   Lisa is a coach on demand, she's a speaker, trainer and serial entrepreneur who has owned numerous businesses since 1995. Lisa is also a mum so she knows and understands the pressure that today's world places on women,and their relationships both at work and in their day to day lives.  Now Lisa's had a varied career combining her two passions.   Yes two.  One is her long career in real estate and the other is her passion that she studied simultaneously and lived through, which is the topic of masculine and feminine energy - which is really big in today's world.  She’s written a number of books and has created online products, so might I suggest that we are in for a fabulous show today.   So without further ado as they say.. Welcome Lisa! Thank you very much, I'm so happy to be here.  This is a topic I love speaking about - books and products and business - so... thank you so much for having me. Oh it is my pleasure Lisa and you are sitting in sunny Brisbane, is that right? On the Gold Coast and it is sunny -  it's 13 degrees - we're not used to that here - I'm cold! My goodness Lisa I feel so sorry for you when we’re sitting in 6 degrees here. Oh I know..  2 days ago it was 20 something,  so it's a shock to our system - but we only get the cold weather for about 6 weeks or so, we are very lucky. That's great yes, well we'll just kind of suffer on.  Look it’s where we choose to live so we have to put up with the consequences don't we. Exactly. We have got so many things to talk to you about today and I hope you're ready for it and you've had your Weet-Bix for breakfast. I have so many questions for you. I hope you don't mind. No, no I'm ready!   Like you said I really want to share what has really worked for me but also what hasn't, because I did so much research before I published my books and so many things were conflicting and sometimes you really don't know what the right thing is to do.  So I really want to share my experiences both good and also what I learnt. That is just fantastic.  That Lisa, is exactly what I want to hear because yes what might be right for some, may not be right for others.  But I know today you are going to get the most amazing gems from Lisa that you can take with you.  When you're contemplating all this, you can make informed decisions. So Lisa could you start by sharing with our listeners some of the books that you've published, a little bit about those, so that we can get an idea of where you're coming from please. Sure, for  sure.  The first book that I was in was a compilation book.  My background is real estate.   So that was a compilation book that somebody else put together that I was invited to join, so that was with other successful real estate agents. That was a really good base and it gave me a good understanding of what being an author was like - also just seeing your name on the front cover of a book was such a great feeling.  Like..  I've finally got a book!    So that was called Real Estate Millionaire and I thought once I did that,  I really want a book in my own name now.   I actually wrote a book 10 years prior and that was about masculine and feminine energy and that's called Banish the Bitch and Bring out the Babe. I love the title Lisa - It says it all. Thank you.  It does!  It does!  I was very fortunate to have a lot to do with Tony Robbins and I joined his Platinum Partners program which was a very intimate program of only 50 people and we travelled the world with him for a year.  I think I spent 145 days of the year travelling, going to his seminars and it was amazing and that's where I was introduced to the topic of masculine and feminine energy.  It really made me question everything about ME,  because I was so business focused - I had my real estate office - I had 10 staff and I was only focused on work and nothing else - that was it and I really sort of understood how I was in my masculine energy and I couldn't switch off -  I didn't have any balance and I thought if I kept this going the way that I was,  I would end up having a heart attack.   So I really investigated that and lived through that and I wrote my book as I was making my transition if you like,  from learning about masculine energy -  to how to tap back into my feminine energy and how to have balance in my life again.   So that was something... and that's what writing a book does as well,  when you're writing down words and you think this is going to be published and other people are going to read these words - it has to be right.   You just can't make off handed statements.  You write a sentence then you say - actually is that right?   You know... it gets you to really question things and to learn so much more about yourself and other people…  and to ask questions. It really is part of the healing process isn't it? Oh it is, it is.  When I went to publish that book, I bought probably 10 books on self publishing because I thought I really want to self publish.  I really want to learn how to do this and I bought all these books and it just looked too hard.  So.. I put the book away for 10 years because it just looked too hard!   Seriously I just thought I don't even know where to go with this, I just don’t know what to do with this. It's too hard!   So I mean these days, it’s so much easier - you can upload it yourself online.  You can have ‘print on demand’ and all those sorts of things but I was overwhelmed and I think that's what help me being in the compilation book, seeing that it isn't as hard as what we can make it out to be.  That was kind of a blockage and that's something I would like to say to everyone listening…  If you have got a book, just do it.   Don't wait like I did for 10 years and put it aside... and it was only that somebody went to another Tony Robbins seminar and started talking about masculine and feminine energy and I said I actually wrote a book on that.  They said well I'd love to read it.  I said ok,  i will dig it up and I started reading it and I thought -  this is really good! I love it.   And then that inspired me to get it out there again and so you know, I'm really glad that they made those comments otherwise it would still be in the back of my computer somewhere. And probably the great part about it a topic like that is Lisa -  is that truth is truth - it doesn't matter what time we live in,  there is still that masculine and feminine energy. Absolutely, absolutely and as I said,  I was so focused and so ‘in my head’ about everything that I didn't let anyone in at all about anything.. It was awful and so yes it was really understanding  the balance and to understand that I can switch off, and you know,  be present where I am.. So that was a really an amazing realisation for me and I went to get books on the subject and I couldn't find anything that would help me.  That's why I knew I had to write my book, because there was nothing out there for me that would teach me what I needed to know - so that was my biggest drive,   to teach other women about this and get my message out there. Fantastic Lisa and that book went really well didn't it. Oh yes, yes fantastic!   Better than I thought and I can go into that more a little bit later if you like. Yes I'd love that. It went better than I thought and I probably should have done other things with it which I can go into later. The next book that I did was a book for my son actually, and that was a book where my mother actually wrote the book - (his grandmother)  so I did a book for them together.    I’ll let you in on a little secret,  Lisa is absolutely brilliant at marketing and shortly we will have a discussion around Lisa's way of publishing and I'm sure what she’ll share will be absolutely helpful and wonderful for you. I'm sure you can already tell that Lisa certainly has the experience and the know how to help you overcome any obstacles that you might have standing between you and writing your own book.   Lisa I'd love to hear about how you wrote a book with your son and then you had another book I think didn't you? Yes yes Let's hear about those My mother wrote a book for my nieces and nephews about 25 years ago and when she died about 12 years ago, on her deathbed I promised her that I would publish her book for her.  Then when I published my book Banish the Bitch and Bring out the Babe, my son asked if he could write a book too.   I thought that's a great idea and I thought I've got just the right book for him, so we did my mum’s poem.  My son contributed to the pictures,  he was with me with the design process and all that sort of thing, so now he has a published book with my mum.   So now he can call himself a published author at 9 years old. Timothy John and The Big Green Dinosaur. Wow what an experience!   It's great because if he says to me, mum, I want to buy this….. I say well how many books have you sold?   Go out there and sell some books.   So I'm trying to teach him as a business as well, that he can make money whenever he wants to.  He’s got a product there, he's got a website and he can do the marketing on YouTube, he can do whatever he likes.  I've loved teaching him about business at the same time, which has been great and it’s a legacy.   He never got to meet his grandparents so that's something now that connects him with his grandmother and it makes me nearly cry every time I think about it,  but it's something lovely for them to have together. Then the next book is one that I'm just about to launch -  that's called Secret Agents and that book is about online marketing which as you said before I just love marketing and that's what I'm really really good at.  It’s something that comes naturally to me in lots of ways,  but it's something that I've also studied a lot as well.  So Secret Agents is going to be launched very soon and that particular book is going to be more a lead in to my business which is the hotline business, which is the coach on demand business.  So I coach real estate agents on demand, they can ring me or email me if they've got objections or anything like that,  in the real estate field and I help them through those objections.  So this book is more like a lead in to my other business - it's not like something I'm going to actively want to make the book a business in itself, which I can go into later -  it's not my main business - so the book leads customers to my main business. And I think that's a great way of looking at your book because you know, being able to use that book as your business card, or calling card and as lisa said… as a lead into the other part of your business - it gives you so much credibility - so that's fabulous  - but Lisa we will going to that a little later,  but before we get to your marketing which I can't wait to hear myself because when they were handing out marketing skills Lisa,  I think they missed me in the line up most definitely.   I can help you. Good!! So I'd love to hear from you though before we get to that,  a little bit about your own personal experiences in the world of publishing and what worked and what didn't, so perhaps if we start there. Sure, I don't have any sort of negative experiences with publishing, I’ve really just got learnings.  I've got things that I've thought oh wow,  I probably should have done that a little bit different but that's the way you learn.  Or listening to others who have done what you want to do.   Having a book is just such an amazing achievement and it's something that you look back and you think wow,  I've got this book and people acknowledge you for that and I think it's something that I’d love to see everybody write a book.  Everybody's got a story, whether it’s about their work, their business, their life.   I just think it's such an amazing thing to do, but I have only ever self published and that's only because... I'm probably not lazy,  I wouldn't say lazy,  but probably impatient is what I would call myself, because if you want to get your book published,  that involves….., if I was going to get a book published - I would get an agent, I would get somebody who was going to go in and fight for me to publish and all that sort of thing,  but I was too impatient because I just wanted to get it out there and I wanted to get onto the next thing.    I'm with you there Lisa, definitely with you on that one.   And the other thing is that you don't know if your book is going to be successful - you really don't and it's not until you've actually published it or you get people to read it and you get proper feedback that you think ohhhhh  this probably would have went well with the publisher -  you know they say writing a book is like a comedian who tells a joke and and has to wait two years to see if it's funny. It's like writing a book - you write a book and you've got to wait all this time to see if anybody likes it.   That's something that you don't know until you get it out there,  so probably if I wasn't so impatient, I would have loved to have got an agent for Banish The Bitch.  I would have really focused on that,  but I didn't really want to make the time to do that. I wish I could have, for people out there that have got a great book,  you know it,  you believe it,  people have read it and loved it,  it's worth taking the time to do that..  I was just too impatient to get out there. A lot really depends Lisa and I'm not sure if you think like this too Lisa, it depends on what you want for your book.  Do you want your book to be standalone and successful or do you want it to be part of a bigger picture?   And that was my next thing, with Banish I would have taken the time, if I would have been more patient, that’s something I would have done,  But for my next book Secret Agents, no.. I don't have any intention of wanting to get that with a publisher.   It’s a lead in to my business,  which is something - a business card,  it's my introduction, it’s my values, it’s my information that when real estate agents read it, they're going to want to know more.  And then I've got my online course, I've got my coaching and all of those other things that I've got and can provide and help them with.   That is my lead in,  so it's really two types of books and two different things - it's completely different. Yes understand completely -  and so I guess you followed your own rules and all that sort of thing as you went through it. Yes and all my marketing all that sort of thing, and some of the things that didn't work for me was…  do you know fiverr,  so when I first went to do my book I got a mockup cover on fivver and it was hideous and I persisted. It was hideous, hideous, hideous.. I just didn’t like any of them, and I thought this is ridiculous and I ended up getting a professional to do the book cover, which your book cover is everything.   And also, so  is the internal of your book.   I went to do it on fivver and it was just like a bad word document - You want to prevent your book as lovely as you can and my books I'm just so proud of how the lady I ended up getting has presented my book.  It's just beautiful - you open up the book and it's just lovely.. so much more attractive than a word document and that's what I would have had if I'd of gone with the fiverr option.    I'm sure there are good ones out there on fiverr, but I just think don't skimp on the quality of your book and don’t skimp on the cover and the layout  - it's got to be good and it's got to be attractive.   And you're representing you.  This is really representing you in the world of business and in the professional world, so I completely understand Lisa,  If you pick up something,  you want it to really be a reflection of you - so most definitely. Absolutely, then the other things that I learnt was about publishing the books itself, so I've got my books on Ingram Sparks which is print on demand, so you can order your books in bulk, you can order 100 copies or 500 copies - or you can go on and order one copy. It’s print on demand - so that was something I preferred to have control of.   There are some people that publish books and they can get a really cheap price say in China or something and they can get them at  a couple of dollars a book and it's a lot cheaper but you have to buy in bulk.   So you might have to get 1000 books and they're in your bedroom until you sell them or get rid of them.   You might get a cheaper deal at the time, but the problem happens when you need to change something.  I've changed my book already -  soooo many times.  I've put a sentence in that I've thought no…..,  I want to take that one out or change it. I've got the capability and the control of doing that with the way that I've got it now on Ingram Sparks and Amazon.   If there's something I want to change I can.   For example if I want to change the cover I can.   I can change whatever I want  -  I don't think oh I can't… I've got a thousand books in my back bedroom that are now wrong.   It's something that you can change, you can adjust you can add to it and I found that it's a lot better for me.  Even though it might cost more, you've got more control. Yes and look I know having a bit to do with publishing houses and things for me that was the defining moment that I wanted this book to be me,  not just fitting into a certain genre that the publishing house decided would be best.    So I totally see where you are coming from Lisa,  to be able to have that control to do with your book what you want to do.. You can change things up and change things around  - is wonderful. Lisa and I'll give you a little time to think about this -  I'd really like to know about Marketing - because so many marketing companies out there offer you the world and then end up giving you nothing basically.  Being honest here…  so really interested to hear from the best in the business about how to go about marketing.   If you have just joined us,  this is the 5th show in this series called publishing 101 and today international best selling author Lisa B is sharing her expertise with us and what fabulous information it is. Ok well I repurpose everything.  So, everything I do,  I think of another way that I can put it out there.  Whether it's a blog post,  whether it's a video..  whatever it is... if I've got one piece of content I look for where I can put that - on 10 different avenues.  Or where  I can use that one piece of content 10 times.  So that's what I'm always looking at.   I just don't do one thing and then put it away -  it’s how can i compile it.  If I do a video, then I'll do a compilation video - I'm getting a little bit of head of myself but it's using all of the avenues for you.  So I have a podcast, so I can have all of my content on the podcast - so I'm speaking to people or if I'm doing interviews or I'm just doing a tutorial or something -  I've got the podcast.  From from that podcast,  I can do a transcript of it, which becomes a blog post, which becomes a post on my social media channels -  so for one thing and one podcast -  I'm looking for how I can put that in many different ways.   So with the podcast,  I always also do a video. So one podcast I've now got into 4 different mediums and then on all of the different things put onto Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter,  Instagram, my website,  YouTube… everything!! So the podcast is one where it's a great thing to repurpose into many different ways so that's one thing is a podcast… so then obviously you've got the book which your marketing.. and telling people you've got the book… and putting photos everywhere of your book and create a hype on Facebook about your book coming up…You know getting interaction and asking people what cover looks best A, B or C?   Getting people interested in and knowing that your book is coming out, so that's a good thing as well and as I said your blog - so you’re promoting yourself through your blog,  your promoting your book through your blog,  whichever way you want to do that…  you've got the blog,  you've got the videos so YouTube - YouTube videos.   Can I interrupt there please Lisa, so when you say your YouTube videos, are you talking about the book or are you explaining what the books about… what are you doing there? Anything.  Anything. As I said, from the podcast I make a video.  It could be tutorials it could be anything. It could be something you've mentioned in the book, it could be information, it could be advertisements for the book, it could be…. geez I've got so many different kinds of videos.  A friend of mine wrote a song and so now I have a song that is my ‘books song’ so now I've got a dedicated song for my book  - a theme song.   So that's one of my videos as well and then you've got your website which is where you are promoting your book all through your website - so you've got… and with your book, you can have your opt in on your website,  you can have either a free audiobook as an opt-in, so that you’re collecting your list..  so there's lots of things you can do,  or you can offer say two or three three chapters of your book as an opt-in -  so again you're collecting a list of people that you can then market too if they haven't bought your book -  you can market to them about different things or if you're up selling to something else.  Then say Instagram, you've got photos and memes and things like that but you can do,  because it's not always about just promoting your book - you don't want to be going out there - my book,  my book,  my book, my book - people are going to get sick of you an unsubscribe -  so it's all about giving information and giving content and showing them who you are - and getting the like know and trust factor from people - is a massive thing as well so it's not always about the book -  it's also about other things that you're doing that they can relate to - it's about teaching them something.   And it is a lot about creating that trust isn't it, because people these days want to be able to trust you before they will buy from you or connect to you. Big time.   Big time.  Because with the online world, you don't know who's genuine and who’s not - it's an awful thing to say but who is really doing what they say they're doing? If you're following someone and sometimes I follow someone for 12 months before I really think - these people are somebody that I want to learn from and I want to buy their product - it might take you that long to really build that trust of somebody - so you know I think it's important to show people who you are and what your beliefs are as well as your products. And then social media is just amazing for promoting your book from Facebook,  LinkedIn,  Twitter, Instagram…  I try not to go to spread myself too thin on those mediums because otherwise you can be a master of none. I was going to say do you follow the the advice of sticking to one or two big time and really see what works for you which one works best for you is that what you do Lisa? Yes definitely,  I find Facebook really works for me.  I have Facebook groups and they are fantastic - they're like private real estate groups which I just love!  The are very interactive and I get a lot of comments and questions and that's amazing.  I really love that and just my personal Facebook page as well.   I have a lot of real estate agents that I connect with there because my main focus is real estate with my business,  so my personal Facebook page is something that gives me a lot of clients. People get to see what you’re like and relate to you and things like that -  LinkedIn I don't use a lot even though I do have a lot of followers and I do get a lot of business from there, I don't post a lot on there. I have got my profile on there and i’ve got a lot about myself which people then will look up.  Linkedin is like a resume-  I treat Linkedin a little bit like a resume - but if you are doing  business-to-business a lot of people do really love LinkedIn.  Twitter I don't do a lot but what I put on my Facebook business page goes automatically on to Twitter - so I've got a presence on there but it's not something that I focus on.  Instagram I love.   I absolutely love Instagram and I do get a lot of business from Instagram as well - so my two favorites are Facebook and Instagram and that's what works for me. And if they'd stop changing all the algorithms Lisa,  it would make it a lot easier wouldn't it. I know and that's why Instagram is great now, so get in and use it before they do change of the algorithms again.  Because Facebook -  I had a Facebook page which went really well and I got a lot of interaction and then one day it just switched off - it was like Facebook unless you were buying ads - it just went off and so then I started a group - a Facebook group which is really working for me.   So you're testing out things to see what is going to work best for you,  is that right Lisa? Yes for sure. I found because my market and my clients are real estate agents and  we talk about problems that we've had in real estate with clients, or getting deals together or whatever it maybe, so it needed to be in a group - because they're not going to share something like that on a public page. So if you're dealing with something where people and not going to want to share publicly,  then maybe a group might be a better option and that's what I found.  I tried really hard with my pages to get interaction and I was thinking why isn't this going as well as what I thought.. and then it clicked.  It’s really something you have to test.  The groups work for me for a lot better.  You can discuss what they're comfortable with and what they’re comfortable sharing. Keep an eye on what’s working and what doesn't - if it doesn't work,  there’s got to be a reason. Lisa if you have some more information about marketing, that would be fantastic. I mean to say what would life be like if we didn't have books to read.  I don't know about you or Lisa but for me I'm sure I couldn't survive. It just wouldn't happen, all that wonderful information, inspiration and everything else that I couldn't lay my hands on and the learnings that would never take place.  I really just don't want to think about it. I'm sure you'll agree Lisa wouldn't you.   Oh for sure. As they say it's like a University on Wheels for audio books -  that's my university on Wheels - my books.  I find Audible just amazing.  Being busy I want to read and I don't get the time to read a physical book,  so for me the audible books are just amazing and when I do get the chance to sit down and read a book I just love it.   I mean there's nothing like reading a physical book. So have you turned your book into an audible book yet Lisa? Yes, I haven't done audible only because apparently Australians we're not allowed to have audible yet,  so it's something that I've looked into having someone else read it out for me on audible - it has to be an American citizen with an American bank account - so I've actually read my book out and I've got it as an audio, but I've just got it on my website, housed on my website. So on my website people can opt in to get my audiobook free.  That's my lead ins.  So I haven't done it perfect but it's like,  I'm not going to let perfect get in the way of getting it done.  I just wanted to have my audiobook there and it's there and I'll look at upgrading that later and whatever..  it was just something I wanted to have there if people are busy and they can't read a physical book. And that's why I love podcasting because you can listen to it no matter where you are. You can be driving along in the car and I travel some fairly big distances and it's just so fabulous to have it so everyone remember Lisa has told you a number of times you can go to her website and opt in to listen to her book.  So I think  I'll be doing that as well. It's such a fabulous offer Lisa, Well in saying that, my book is all about how to position yourself as the expert -  now it is tailored to real estate agents but it really is for any business.  So anybody listening to this will actually get a lot out of that book because it's marketing 101 - it's everything from social media to video marketing to…  it's everything marketing-  the book is actually marketing. Lisa I'm just stunned, you are offering this for free on your website and that was going to be one of my questions…  is your book, you know what you’re offering… can we kind of transpose that into any other business that we might be running and obviously we can. I read a book about 25 years ago and it was called benchmarking and it was a book about how business strategies.   It was looking at businesses similar to your own and looking at what they're doing and looking at what you're doing and can you put any of the procedures into your business?   That was something I did,  I was in real estate and I looked at a travel agent and I thought it's kind of a little bit similar..  not really but kind of and I looked at some of the procedures they did and it really made me look at my business and business models in general so that was my first experience of really looking at business models and that was something when I study Internet marketing and I spent a fortune on online courses.  The best online marketers and read books and did everything with the vision of how can I apply this into real estate - so I watch what Frank Kern did with his clients and thought how can a real estate agent do this with their clients?  How can a real estate agent do what they're doing.. to make it successful and so I had a real estate office at the time and so I did all of those things.  I did the free books I did video marketing.  Everything the online marketers were doing that was successful and put it into my real estate office and then real estate agents started ringing me and asking me… how do I do this and how do I do that and why did you do this?   So then I thought wow, I've got to create an online product, I've got to write a book.  There's a market here because people don't know how to do this. I’ve sort of taken it for granted in lots of ways but I've also learnt it.  So...  I put all the information into a step by step process.   My book is actually a checklist - it's got boxes that you can check off -  you can say yes I've done this or you can come back and do it later.   It explains what to do,  it explains why you need to do it and as I said you can check it off.    So it really is everything I know about marketing - and you can put that into your own business as far as taking it and running with it - so then you can say you have your book - think how do I then take that and cross it over into my business and that's a question we should always be asking. If a business is successful what can I do to make my business just as successful as theirs?   That is just fantastic Lisa and I understand completely, to be able to take all that information and put into your own business - regardless of what business you're in. There will definitely be 90% of what Lisa is explaining and teaching you in her book that you can bring into your own business.   So my suggestion is that you go to www.lisab.com.au and have a look at that book.   Now Lisa time is just ticking down. Geraldine - It's gone so quick! Time just goes so quick when girls get together to chat. I was just going to say….. some of the things that I would like to say to people is that as I said….  I waited 10 years to publish my book and I just can't believe that I put it away for that long and did nothing with it,  so I would  just like to say, get it back out if you put a book away - get it back out have a look at it -  make some changes, adjust and whatever -  if you haven't written a book a big tip that I can give is Google Drive/ Google Docs -  that's how I've written all of my books - I've just got my Google App - opened a Google document on my phone it's also synced with my phone and my computer.   Then I came up with my title - I've got  my title page on my Google Docs then  I separated each into chapters -  chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3,  Chapter 4.  I worked out kind of the flow of the book of what I wanted to say -  The introduction,  the different lead ins of how your book is going to be organised.  Then each chapter you write those headings at the front of the chapter and then wherever you are.  you can start to write your book.   My son does karate and for 5 hours a week while  he's at karate and I'm watching him, I get onto my phone or computer and start writing my book - while I'm watching my son do karate.  Or while I’m waiting for an appointment or if someone's 10 minute late.  I will just go in and write my book.   You don't get writer's block that way,  you're actually organising as you go and the great thing about Google Docs is that you can talk into it and do speech to text.  So you can press a button and you can just talk and the book writes for you.  Google Docs writes it for you, so you don't even have to type it in.   Technology is just amazing isn't it, so many things that we can do, so there's no excuse really is what you're saying. Another little tip that you can do, is once you have a podcast you can play that podcast back into your Google Docs and it can transcribe it for you.  You might have to make a few little changes but you can do your own transcripts.  Does that make sense? Yes It is so fantastic because otherwise what you have to do is listen to a bit of the recording,  stop and then listen to a bit more - you just play the audio into your Google Docs and it types it all out - and you have your transcript. So… just create a Google Docs and start writing - you might see something else that gives you inspiration,  something that you can write about, or a link to a website that somebody tells you about that is similar to your book -  put it in that document.  Put everything in that document and then you can go back and research - it's such a great way of doing it. I just absolutely love Google Docs.   I do everything on Google Docs. Everything is so easy to find -  you can put photos,  videos and all sorts of different things in there and it's your book!!  It's your focus when you log on! And I love the idea that you can do all that when you're out and about and because a lot of the time you're inspired when you're out and about - ideas come to us at the most inconvenient times so we can actually go in, or even just record those ideas on your phone.  I quite often do that too, just press record on my phone and I'm chatting away and people just think you're on the phone so that's ok. This Podcast Is Episode Number 0199 And It Will Be About Contractors Are Self Motivated To Be Successful A person makes the decision to become a contractor. It’s easy. Now you are the boss; no one to tell you what to do, how to do it when to do it. Yes – It’s easy.  It’s Morning, Are you ready? In Washington State being a contractor is fee-based. If you are not choosing one of the mechanical trades, there are usually no addition tests or licensing. Each state has different rules. Some states have a General Contactor’s test that confirms you have the most basic construction skills. Others states start most contractors out under a Handyman License.     What are some of the things you thought about being when you grew up and out on your own? From a small child, preschooler, then from grade school kid to the teenager to the adult.   I suspect you and your friends you never played contractor and customer; and yet life happened. Most people pick up a few “Handy Skills” from living in a house, condo or apartment. Simple common things that need to be fixed starting with hanging pictures on the wall (now it is the TV) Add the surround sound, link your equipment together. Buy furniture, table and chairs, end tables, bed, take it out of the box and ASSEMBLE. The word ASSEMBLE is in almost every box. Add shelves, installing cabinets, changing light fixtures. Again, the word ASSEMBLE.  Go to the garage and add a few tools to work on the truck. Get a lawn mower, edger, wheelbarrow, and suddenly you have grown your “Do-It-Yourself Skills.” It actually happened over time, one task at a time.   Whether it happened because of most things the landlord took too long to come; it wasn’t part of what the landlord did (move, assemble furniture), or you own your first home, current home, and you are “oops” The Owner.   If you want something done you that cannot do – You need to call a Contractor, Landscaper, Pest Control. So the range of skills you have continues to increase. You may find all things mechanical easy.   My Father would tell stories about how as a small child I would help him work on cars. Dad said, I got quite good at changing out carburetors (I don’t remember any of this). But it might explain how I can hear “funny noises” that never seems to happen when I take the car to the mechanic. I guess he taught me by “ear” to hear when the car was out of tune. Maybe too, it would explain why I would rather shop for good quality Truck Tires than spend time at a Makeup Counter.   Now, my brother he became a mechanic. He is the Happiest when he is under the hood of a car. Could I have become a mechanic? Yes, Probably. Would Randal have supported it? Yes, he would have then and now. I just never thought about it as an Opportunity. The Opportunity of being a Contractor is a gift. It doesn’t matter if you are a One Man Band – Doing all of the work or have a larger business with Subcontractors and / or Employees.     There are many paths that lead a person to become a contractor Trainee, skilled employee trusted employee, management, co-owner, owner Embracing the Opportunity to buy an existing business from someone else Embracing the Opportunity to be part owner of an existing business Embracing the Opportunity to start a business from scratch   The Why you became a Contractor is as varied as the number of the contractors that exist. Parent is or was a contractor, and you became a contractor as a matter of tradition or by default Career Changer who is thinking about career paths chosen and wants to do something different An employee in another industry and Lost Your Job and needed to do “something.” Many Contractors started out as being an employee for someone else.  There is no risk as an employee and a guaranteed paycheck.  Usually, more reasonable hours as employees can go home based on time served.   Every contractor with employees embraces any motivated, conscious employees. Embracing the Opportunity to be part of business as a member of management team Embracing the Opportunity to be part of business as a skilled, trusted employee Willing to complete the needed tasks without watching the clock every minute More money is only a short-term motivator. It will not motivate long term an employee with itchy feet, a bad attitude or poor skills. They will hide on the job, try to get fired, quit, skip on child support and have a variety of reasons to why they are doing poorly on the job before leaving. Early To Bed, Early To Rise, Know Your Numbers And Advertise! As the Contractor you have to be self-motivated to: Get out of bed Start Your Day Do what it takes to bring in the call Answer the call Find the customer Bid the job Win the job Get the material Coordinate the labor Get the job done Get paid There is no one to tell you: What to do How to do It When to do it External Forces try to be helpful by the combination of Nurture, Nudge, Nag. And only if you embrace it in the spirit which Nurture, Nudge, Nag are intended is it helpful (To Benefit You and Your Company) Too much of any of one those three things then the dynamics change. Hard Feeling happen, and everyone involved becomes frustrated and unhappy. Spouses want to be helpful, but after being zapped – they stop.  The Contractor gets zapped – and productive stuff stops.          An outside person (Bookkeeping Service) can ask for the same receipts, invoices, etc. as a spouse but it comes across differently. It’s because the “Personal Stuff” is not there. One of my earlier blogs I talked about “Tooth Paste Caps” and how the “Personal Stuff” carries over into the business and the “Business Stuff” carries back over into your personal life.   It is hard to turn off the business when you walk through the front door. As a small business owner – you are hardly ever “Off The Clock.” Enjoy The Moments. You have to have Self-Motivation to be successful. The Self-Motivation may come from family and the desire to provide for your family. After all, who can turn down the adorable eyes of your spouse, little kids, puppies, kittens and the fun stuff you love to do. I am not a cat person, yet at the office, I buy cat food in the 25# bag for the group of neighborhood cats who visit all day long on our covered deck.  They have expectations, provide drama when they are not met; but they cannot actually motivate me to buy cat food, set out water, and upgrade their cushions. I control what I do, when and if I do it. That does not stop the cats from banging on the door and singing loudly to get attention when they feel they are being ignored.   No one loves to do all the tasks that need to be done. Even if they did – The To Do List is never ending for a small business owner. The work is easier and more fun when you know you have the proper help with Processes, Systems, Software and the right people in place to do the things that others can do.   You as the Contractor (Business Owner) should delegate tasks, not abdicate responsibility. Keep control of your finances. In 2013, The Polyphonic Spree released, quite possibly the best album, a decade into their existence — quite the feat for a band many had written off as little more than novelty the first time its 20-odd members took to the stage in matching robes. But, then, Tim Delaughter has built a career out of defying exception. The Spree itself was one of those crazy sorts of what ifs that artists sit around and discuss but rarely ever deliver on: as much a happening as a band, with two dozen members in choir outfits, born out of the dissolution of Tripping Daisy a damaged 90s psychedelic alternative act that recorded a handful of wonderful records that will forever be relagated to the Buzz Bin of history for its sunshine single “I Got a Girl.” Delaughter’s determination is the glue that’s held his deeply satisfying pop experiment together since 2000 in the face of financial strain and all of the other numerous logistical considerations that come with such a massive operation at a time when similarly positioned groups with roughly one-eight the band members struggle to make ends meet.  The singer looks slightly worse for wear when we sit down upstairs at Brooklyn Bowl in a meeting spot oddly positioned just outside the ladies room before the doors have officially opened. But once the music starts — after a very brief but extremely wedding ceremony between audience members — the band puts on a show with every ounce of energy that defined the Spree in its nascent days. Over the years, unsurprisingly, members of the massive group have come and gone, but Delaughter has maintained his position as the excited and chaotic nucleus. The band has already outlived Delaughter’s previous group, and if Yes It’s True is any indication, The Polyphonic Spree still has plenty of life ahead of it.
