EYE on NPI - ST ST25R200 NFC/HF RFID Reader IC

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 13, 2025 8:25

This week's EYE ON NPI is neither-here-nor-there - it's STMicroelectronics' ST25R200 NFC/HF RFID Reader IC (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/st25r200-nfc-hf-rfid-reader-ic) a simple but powerful NFC/RFID reader and writer chip that will let you add a contactless interface to your next design. Thanks to the high power RF stage and dual antenna support, you can avoid the frustration of "where do I tap??" by giving you plenty of surface area for successful transactions. We're big fans of intuitive RFID/NFC interfaces using tags, they come in all sorts of sizes and shapes (https://www.adafruit.com/product/365) from standard business cards to microtags that can fit in a manicure (https://www.adafruit.com/product/2800). They don't require a battery, and can store up to a few KB of data, including encrypted/secured data sections so as to make the tag 'trustworthy'. They're often used for small-money transactions like copy shops, laundromats and public transport, where speed is important and we can store value on the card. Or for identification like access cards. With proper design, they'll work up to 4 inches away from a reader, don't suffer from corrosion or contact wear or affected by water/humidity. Reading and writing RFID/NFC tags, which use 13.56MHz as a carrier frequency, requires a proper chip that can handle the requirements of blasting enough RF signal to 'power' the tag, then transmit a command and receive the response before the quiescent power runs out. If you have a big antenna, this isn't too hard - but the real challenge is to manage it with a small antenna. That's the nice thing about the ST25R200 (https://www.digikey.com/short/5ttf9ptj) - it has powerful output drivers so even mini wearable-sized antennas work well. You can configure the outputs to be one differential or two single-ended antenna coils. If you want to design your PCB antenna, we recommend ST's website for NFC inductance calculations (https://eds.st.com/antenna/#/) it will let you determine the inductance based on width, height, copper thickness and trace width so you get maximum power transfer. The ST25R200's connection to the controller is over standard 4-pin SPI, so you can use any microcontroller or microcomputer with 4 pins available. An IRQ line is also handy to 'wake on card detect'. Other than that, the interface is fairly low level: registers are used to configure the RF section and encoding but otherwise, data is transmitted or received via two FIFO buffers. This makes the chip easy to adapt to the various sub-protocols and standards (https://nfc-forum.org/build/specifications) designed by competing RFID companies: ISFO14443A/NFC-A, ISO14443B/NFC-B, ISO15693/NFC-V, NFC Forum T1T, T2T, T4T, and T5T tag types, and proprietary protocols, such as Kovio, CTS, and B'. In order to make your life easier when it comes to implementation, ST has released RFAL an RF/NFC abstraction layer (https://www.st.com/en/embedded-software/stsw-st25rfal004.html) that is written in pure C so that it can be ported to any platform or compiler. To get started quickly we recommend the STEVAL-25R200SA evaluation board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STEVAL-25R200SA/25701817) which comes with a USB debug STLink interface, SMTable module, 4 pluggable antenna options including one flex PCB printed antenna, and two micro-tags for testing. If you want to integrate RFID/NFC 'touchless' support to your next design, the ST ST25R200 NFC/HF RFID Reader IC (https://www.digikey.com/short/5ttf9ptj) is small, inexpensive, and fast to get started with minimal external components, and ready-to-go drivers. And best of all the chips are in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Order the ST25R200 (https://www.digikey.com/short/5ttf9ptj) and an eval board today and you can tap your way to contactless communication by tomorrow afternoon!

APAC stocks were ultimately mixed amid the ongoing mass closures in the region and after the choppy performance stateside in reaction to the FOMC, while the first earnings results from the magnificent 7 stocks were also varied - Meta +2.3%, Microsoft -4.6%, and Tesla +4.1%.An immediate hawkish reaction was seen as the Fed held rates at 4.25-4.50%, as expected, while it removed the reference that "inflation has made progress toward the Committee's 2 percent objective" in the accompanying statement. However, Fed Chair Powell later noted in the Q&A that it was a language clean-up, as opposed to anything fundamental, which saw a dovish reversal to the initial moves.US President Trump said because the Fed and Chair Powell failed to stop problem they created with inflation, he will do it by unleashing American energy production slashing regulation, rebalancing international trade, and reigniting American manufacturing.Looking ahead, highlights include Swiss KOF, Spanish CPI (Flash), EZ GDP (Q4), US GDP Advance (Q4), PCE Prices Advance (Q4), Jobless Claims, Japanese Tokyo CPI & Retail Sales, ECB & SARB Policy Announcements, Comments from ECB President Lagarde, Supply from ItalyEarnings from Nokia, Roche, ABB, H&M, BT, Shell, Sage, STMicroelectronics, Sanofi, Deutsche Bank, Apple, Intel, Visa, US Steel, UPS, Mastercard, Blackstone, Caterpillar, Cigna & Mobileye.Read the full report covering Equities, Forex, Fixed Income, Commodites and more on Newsquawk

EYE ON NPI - ams OSRAM TMF8806 Single-Zone direct Time of Flight sensor

Adafruit Industries

This week's EYE ON NPI is having Too Much Fun - it's the ams OSRAM TMF8806 Single-Zone direct Time of Flight sensor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/a/ams/tmf8806-single-zone-tof) the latest in ams' series of ToF sensors. This sensor may seem like "YAToF" but there's a few things that caught our eye. One is the excellent pricing, about $2 in quantity. Another is the simplicity of function: unlike many ToF sensors, there isn't a massive firmware stack required to load on each boot. Instead, the default firmware is in ROM for a lightweight interface. We've stocked ToF sensors (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=tof) for quite a while - mostly the ST VL series. These sensors have developed quite a bit over the years, starting with the 100mm-range VL6180 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/3316) and continuing onto multi-grid devices that we've covered on previous EYE ON NPI's (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PocFz427NE). The way these work is by blasting laser pulses out of a VCSEL (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical-cavity_surface-emitting_laser) which then bounces off of the target and the 'time of flight' is measured in the pF range to give accuracy and range. Easy to describe, but non-trivial to implement...the light doesn't bounce off perfectly, and a lot of individualy measurements need to be taken and then averaged - this is called the histogram. The histogram data is filtered in software to toss outliers and double-bounces, to get the 'true' calibrated distance. And it has to do this dozens of times a second. The complexity of the algorithm is what gives each product its accuracy, precision, repeatability and range - so its no surprise that its running on an in-package microcontroller. However, as the sensors have gotten more advanced, the firmware process has also gotten complex: for many ToF sensors you have to 'load' the firmware algorithm on boot (https://github.com/STMicroelectronics/stm32-vl53l5cx/blob/main/modules/vl53l5cx_buffers.h#L33) and even if you don't, its a non-trivial port to other platform. That's what caught our eye for the ams OSRAM TMF8806 (https://www.digikey.com/short/f9v8w20d), the description specifies "No FW download is required to operate this device, saving host MCU memory space, reducing startup time, and saving overall system power by enabling customers to quickly start the device and make measurements in a few milliseconds". The interface is trivial, they even provide the I2C commands required to boot, load firmware, and perform a reading, its about a dozen commands. For hardware, it's also a nice and simple integration - with a small OLGA package, I2C communication, and 1.8V or 3.3V logic level. One thing to watch for, the sensor comes with 3 'modes' - short, medium and long range. Minimum range for all of these is 10mm, the max is 200, 2500 or 5000mm. And,while the sensor can do 5000mm, it requires pretty specific calibration and lighting. The default range is 2500 and we recommend sticking to that if you can because then you get the benefit of built-in configuration and calibration for speed/simplicity. To get started fast, ams OSRAM supplies multiple drivers for Arduino or other C microcontrollers (https://github.com/ams-OSRAM/tmf8806_driver_arduino), generic Python (https://github.com/ams-OSRAM/tmf8806_driver_python) and Linux kernel (https://github.com/ams-OSRAM/tmf8806_driver_linux). You can also grab an eval board in 'shield' format that has a microcontroller for plug-and play usage (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/ams-osram-usa-inc/TMF8806-EVM-EB-SHIELD/24768739) Add low power, super fast ToF sensing to your next design with the ams OSRAM TMF8806 Single-Zone direct Time of Flight sensor (https://www.digikey.com/short/f9v8w20d), in stock for immediate shipment from DigiKey! Order today and it will ship to you at pico-second speed, so that you can be integrating it by tomorrow morning.

EYE ON NPI - STMicroelectronics' ST25 NFC Smart Tag Set

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 4, 2024 10:23

This week's EYE ON NPI has some Nice Freakin' Chips - it's STMicroelectronics' NFC Smart Tag Set, (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/st25-tag-bag-ut1-nfc-tag-set) with a cornucopia of labels, stickers, cards and tags that feature ST's Near Field Communication (NFC) chipsets, each with a matching antenna. This 18-piece kit is a great way to evaluate the different materials that NFC tags can be embedded in as well as verify that your NFC reader chipset works at the desired distances. NFC is built on top of the 'RFID' tags you're probably familiar with, unlike read-only RFID tags, NFC has bi-directional communication which means you can write values to the tags which makes them universal. For example, instead of having to manage a separate database that maps the 64-bit RFID value to a product SKU, the SKU itself can be written directly into the non-volatile memory on chip. Stuff like urls, timestamps, account balances, and sensor logs can go straight into the chip for anyone to access - or only for users with the correct password-unlock-code. NFC tags, stickers and cards are an upgrade from iButtons (https://www.analog.com/en/product-category/ibutton-products.html) -- less clunky, do not need to make electrical contact, magnetic stripe cards (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_card) -- can hold more information, are less flakey, don't delaminate or demagnetize, or barcodes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barcode) -- need good light for optical reading, can be sluggish, very limited amount of data. Since NFC chips have bi-directional communication, plus built in encryption and writable memory, without any battery, they need to harvest energy from RF waves. That means that the the antenna is used for both data and energy and needs to be both tuned to the chip's internal capacitance as well as maximized in order to get the most E field possible (https://www.st.com/resource/en/application_note/an2866-how-to-design-a-1356-mhz-customized-antenna-for-st25-nfc--rfid-tags-stmicroelectronics.pdf). So, in general, the bigger the antenna the 'better' performance you'll get: shorter taps, less finicky alignment, and farther functionality. Normally to make sure that the end-recipient can detect whether a box was opened in transit is to use a tamper detection sticker that tears when removed. Instead of needing two stickers, or even just relying on a human to properly detect the tampering, the ST25 chips have two extra contacts that can connect to a thin wire switch. When the sticker is moved the thin wire is broken and the chip will detect it. Since we can use encryption/authentication on the ST25, the tamper sticker tag can't be replaced. And, when using a digital logging system, it will automatically record the tamper without a person being able to fudge the reading. If you want to get started with integrating STMicroelectronics' ST25T NFC chips (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/rfid-rf-access-monitoring-ics/880?s=N4IgjCBcoLQCxVAYygMwIYBsDOBTANCAG4B2aWehA9lANogDsAnGKyALqEAOALlCCAC%20woA) or tags into your product authentication/identification, access or inventory management, data logging, or asset tracking, then the NFC Smart Tag Set (https://www.digikey.com/short/rf5ddb3c) is a quick and easy way to get a wide range of stickers and cards to try out. Order today and DigiKey will pick, pack and post your order you'll have these tags in hand by tomorrow afternoon.

This week's EYE ON NPI gyres and gimbels through the wave. It's the latest LSM6DS 6-axis accelerometer + gyroscope IMU from STMicroelectronics. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/lsm6dsv32x-6-axis-imu). This latest update to the LSM6DS line is packed with features such as I3C, step counter, Qvar electrostatic sensing, finite state machine, AI 'learning core' and embedded sensor fusion so not only are you getting an IMU but a full user interface and sensor management hub. We've been stocking and using the LSM6DS series for many years: starting with the LSM6DS33 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4480) a great low cost 6-DoF to the LSM6DS3C-TR replacement (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4503) to the fancy-pants LSM6DSOX (https://www.adafruit.com/product/4438). These are pin-compatible, and nearly-firmware-compatible sensors that are compact, sensitive and precise. In particular, what we look for in a good IMU chip is the gyro offset and drift. When making an inertial measurement unit (IMU) especially one used for orientation calculations, the quality of the gyroscope has a big impact on the jitter/speed/drift. (https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-sensorlab-gyroscope-calibration/comparing-gyroscopes) Accelerometers are pretty good quality these days, we've figured out how to make them decades ago. And magnetometers are not as important - they don't update often and are used for orientation correction. Gyro's have the most error possibilities. In general, the more you pay, and the newer the sensor, the better performance you'll get in the form of low offset and low drift. The LSM6DSV32X has similar gyro/accel characteristics from the LSM6DSOX and ISM330DHCX - although we'll note the min/max is not documented, just the typical values. And there's some ISM330 parameters such as Angular random walk and Bias Instability, that are not specified. That said, as long as you're good on calibration, and the specs are within your limits, the embedded functions are where the LSM6DSV32X really shines. Like many ST accelerometers, there's a built in pedometer (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_LSM6DS/blob/master/examples/adafruit_lsm6ds_pedometer/adafruit_lsm6ds_pedometer.ino) as well as a tilt / motion sensor. The first is good for step counting, the second lets the sensor go into a low power state and set an interrupt pin when the device is moved or tilted to wake up the rest of the UI. The more advanced functions include a 'machine learning core' (https://www.st.com/resource/en/application_note/an5804-lsm6dsv16x-machine-learning-core-stmicroelectronics.pdf). We use that term lightly because it's more like a 'decision tree' where you can set up test conditionals post-normalization/filtering to classify simple motion states such as "running", "sitting" "lying down". These won't be as flexible as a true machine-learning algorithm that uses sample data to create a model, but you also don't have to spend any power or computation. Another advanced feature ST has been adding to many of their chips is Qvar electric charge variation detection sensing. This ultra-sensitive capacitance-like sensing can be used for human presence and motion detection, as well as touch/proximity detection. The eval board comes with a few Qvar plates for trying it as a slide or touch sensor as well as a 'radar' like proximity detector. (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STEVAL-MKI240KA/22522578) This could be nice to use if you've got a microcontroller that does not have touch sensing peripherals, since now you don't need a separate chip. The new feature we're most interested in is the "Sensor fusion low power" block - which can output a game rotation vector in quaternions, that gives the chip attitude (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Orientation_(geometry)) direct from the sensor, without needing to continuously read/buffer/analyze the 6-DoF data. We'll note that there's no magnetometer, so it won't have 'absolute' orientation against the earth, but for many use cases a rough orientation - especially one that is self-driving and low power - will suffice. We'll note that for getting started, the LSM6DSV16X library on GitHub has examples for this and the other embedded features. (https://github.com/stm32duino/LSM6DSV16X) If you want to try out the new ST LSM6DSV32X 6-Axis IMU with 32 g Accelerometer (https://www.digikey.com/short/bhq3bwhf) or it's smaller sibling, the LSM6DSV16X (https://www.digikey.com/short/524744wt) both are available and in stock from DigiKey right now. Pick the 16g version if you're doing every-day motion sensing and 32g for sports / high speed activities. The eval board is also available and great if you want to start fast and also check out the new Qvar sensor feature (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STEVAL-MKI240KA/22522578). EYE ON NPI - STMicroelectronics STSPIN32G0 Three-Phase BLDC Controller

This week's EYE ON NPI will take you for a SPIN around the block - it's STMicroelectronics' STSPIN32G0 Three-Phase BLDC Controller (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stspin32g0-three-phase-bldc-controller) series of chips, featuring 250 or 600 V three-phase BLDC FET controllers with integrated embedded STM32 MCU! These chips are an 'all in one' solution to advanced motor control when you want to have sensors and tight integration, or a super tiny footprint. As budding robotics hobbyists, we've designed and stocked many products - like this Motor Shield (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1438) - to support a variety of small DC motors. Some well known varieties are: Hobby Servos, DC brushed motors, and steppers. Hobby servos are actually just DC brushed motors with a feedback circuit, so we'll ignore those. DC brushed motors are simple: apply a positive DC voltage to the two wires, and the rotor spins one way. Apply a negative voltage, they spin the other way. As you can expect from the name, inside are brushes, that connect from the rotating center to the two permanent magnets on the outer diameter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brushed_DC_electric_motor). This makes them inexpensive, and very easy to use: simply PWM the voltage to change the speed, invert the voltage to change direction. Nothing more complex than an H-bridge is required. But the brushes do eventually wear out, or oxidize, or splinter. Which means the motors will eventually 'die' and need replacement. Fine for toys and simple products that have low usage, but not appropriate for white goods or automotive or anything where life-time and reliability are essential! Stepper motors are a tad more complex: in order to have precise movement, they use a bank of 4 electromagnetic coils to 'step' the axle around a little bit at a time (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stepper_motor). No brushes to replace! But they don't rotate fast: the point is they have small accurate steps, and they're kinda expensive. What if we could combine DC brushed motors and steppers to create... Brushless DC Motors? Wow, so smart! That's exactly what a BLDC is, a DC motor that has no brushes, but does have multiple windings that have to be synchronized right to rotate. They're a little more expensive than brushed motors, but not significantly. The biggest cost increase is in the driver complexity because you need to drive and sequence three branches, whereas the commutator/brushes on a brushed motor handles that for you. Normally folks will use their favorite microcontroller, then wire it up to a BLDC driver (https://www.digikey.com/short/3bf72p89), like the L6235Q (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/L6235QTR/2772201) which can push 2.5A per-bridge at up to 52V. But, wouldn't it be nifty if you didn't have to do any wiring, so that even for small designs, you can have a fully integrated motor controller with your main microcontroller. Or, you could use the microcontroller as an I2C or SPI peripheral that integrates the temperature/current/voltage/torque monitoring that you would normally have to manage as a interrupt-run thread on a main core. That's what we've got here with the STSPIN32G0 Three-Phase BLDC Controller (https://www.digikey.com/short/977t8ftv) series of chips. It's a ARM Cortex M0 STM32G031C8 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/STM32G031C8U6/10300273) running at 64MHz and 64K flash / 8K SRAM, with standard peripherals, debug, and even some 5V-friendly GPIO. Inside, the STM is bonded to the control circuitry so that 3 sides are used for microcontroller interfacing, and the fourth side is high-voltage friendly with separated pads. Program it just like any other STM32G031C8, and just define the motor control pins to the bonded wires. And then you'll need to connect the 6 power IGBT/FETs to create the 3 driving half-bridges such as STGD6M65DF2 (https://www.digikey.com/short/7dwq7zw2) Are you ready to have a super-integrated BLDC driver board that comes with a top-notch Cortex-M0 and all the power-driving experience ST has to offer? You're in luck because the STSPIN32G0 Three-Phase BLDC Controller (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stspin32g0-three-phase-bldc-controller) is in stock right now at DigiKey for immediate shipment. Check out the all-in-one EVSPIN32G06Q1S1 eval board (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/EVSPIN32G06Q1S1/22470459) if you want to immediately start testing out the STSPIN32G0. Then place your order today so you can start putting your own spin on motor driving by tomorrow afternoon.

This week's EYE ON NPI is gonna give it to up high...then down low (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_five) ...ready to measure, never too slow! It's STMicroelectronics' TSC1641 Digital Power Monitor (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/tsc1641-digital-power-monitor), a high-precision temperature, voltage, power, and temperature monitoring chip with I2C or I3C interfaces for integration with modern microcontrollers and microcomputers. This chip is great for tracking actual power usage into motors, LEDs, batteries etc. to detect anomalies or conserve power, with a tiny footprint and flexible usage. The TSC1641 is a modern take on the old-shunt-resistor-into-an-opamp method of power monitoring (https://learn.adafruit.com/portable-solar-charging-tracker/analog-stuff). For one, the TSC1641 can handle high or low-side measurements. That means you don't run the risk of having your grounds floating above earth, or managing multiple reference voltages. Also of course wiring is a snap, you just insert the board in between the power rail and load. Second, it can read up to 60VDC voltages - great for big battery packs, automotive or robotics. Third, it will calculate power and low-pass filter for you so you aren't affected by spiky power usage. Fourth, there's an onboard temperature sensor tossed in. Finally, this chip is not just I2C compatible, it has I3C support https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I3C_(bus) which makes it a great investment for long-term designs as I3C catches on and is supported in the next generations of microcontrollers. We covered I3C in a previous EYE ON NPI (https://blog.adafruit.com/2022/05/12/eye-on-npi-nxp-p3s0200gm-i3c-switch-with-hardware-select-and-enable-eyeonnpi-nxp-digikey/) so check it out for more details. To sum up fast: I3C is back-compatible with I2C but has push-pull logic support for up-to-12MHz speeds, in-channel interrupts so a separate IRQ line is not needed, and dynamic addressing so there's no address collision. A great update to all the things that make us batty about I2C. Support for I3C on the controller-side is still rolling out so you probably will use this chip in I2C mode for now, but your firmware can be adjusted-up to I3C on a future revision. This chip is a great response to the INA series from TI - and we love competition, it's great for all engineers when the chip companies clamor for our business by iterating and improving! Compared to the INA237, the ST TSC1641 (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/TSC1641IQT/21725159) has the same specs but is 10% less, plus you get that I3C support that none of the INA chips have yet. The high level of integration means you only need to spec a shunt resistor. The resistor selection will have to balance the dynamic current range measurable with the 16-bit precision. If you pick too small of a resistor, you'll max out the measurable current faster. If you pick too large of a resistor, you wont get good accuracy at low currents. Check the datasheet for how to select a good resistor and then how to tell the chip what value you've chosen: that will let the TSC1641 perform the power/current/voltage calculations on its own without you having to do any math. If you'd like to get started fast, there's also an eval board that is Arduino-shield-compatible (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/steval-digafev1-evaluation-board-for-the-tsc1641), some firmware is provided for the Nucleo series of ST dev boards to evaluate without any soldering or coding. If you're interested in the STMicroelectronics TSC1641 Digital Power Monitor (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/stmicroelectronics/TSC1641IQT/21725159) you are in luck because it's in stock right now at DigiKey! Order today and it will ship faster than you can give a high-five, and be at your doorstep tomorrow afternoon for your power-monitoring pleasure.

EYE on NPI - STMicroelectronics' STM32U5 Series Ultra-Low-Power MCUs

Adafruit Industries

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 29, 2024 13:37

This week's EYE ON NPI has a dash of DSI - it's the new STM32U5 Series microcontroller processors from ST (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32u5-series-ultra-low-power-mcus). These bring a wonderful upgrade from the same-old same-old Cortex M4 or M7 with some eye-popping peripherals that will make quick work of any graphics project, but without the weight of a Linux processor overhead. There's lots of chips that purport to have a 'graphics interface' but the moment you sit down to actually use it, you realize that there's very limited SRAM for the graphics display. So you either have to use slow external PSRAM, or you don't get a double-buffer for smooth updates. That's because it's kinda rare to see a microcontroller with more than maybe 1 MB of SRAM. The STM32U5 series is plumped up with up to 3 MBytes of delicious on-chip SRAM, which is perfect for double buffering a 800x480 display with 1.5MB left over, or even double-buffered 720x720 with 1 MB of SRAM left over. Compare that to the STM32H7's max of 1 MB. (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32h7-32-bit-high-performance-mcu) That RAM will come in handy because this is one of the first microcontrollers we've seen that has true DSI host support! DSI (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_Serial_Interface) is the latest interface standard for connecting to medium-size displays of approximately 480x480 pixels or larger. It's a differential signalling interface which means fewer pins, but the ability to go fast to address fairly large displays. However, because it's differential and high speed, you really need peripheral support - which very few chips have unless you upgrade to microprocessors that drive phones or tablets. Previous to DSI, folks would use SPI displays for up to about 320x240 (https://www.adafruit.com/search?q=spi+display) and 8-bit parallel for displays from 128x640 up to around 480x320 (https://www.adafruit.com/product/1774) and then for displays larger than that - 480x272 or greater - RGB TTL dotclock interface. SPI displays are nice because they have a built in framebuffer - but SPI is slow so you can't drive anything but the smallest screens. Parallel is faster, but still suffers from speed issues. RGB TTL displays have no framebuffer, so you have to write them continuously, and that requires built in RAM or PSRAM and hardware support to keep up with 20-60 FPS updates. Also, ideally, double-buffers to avoid tearing. However, you need a pin for each bit of colors, so easily 30 pins are needed - and even then RGB TTL tends to top out at 1024x600. For 720p or 1080p, most folks would go with HDMI, but you can get these displays with DSI interfaces: and DSI only uses 6-10 pins for 2 to 4 lanes of data plus a clock lane. These new chips are a nice step up from the STM32F7 and H7 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32h7-32-bit-high-performance-mcu) in that they have the low price, multiple pin package count, with improved RAM and display support. There's also variants with hardware crypto support, high-speed USB, and like we mentioned, with DSI host. There's also a new version of the NeoChrom graphics engine that has vector graphics support, vector font rendering, and JPEG hardware decoding which will allow for video playback with MJPEG (https://blog.st.com/neochrom-gpu-neochromvg-gpu/). We're excited to see DSI interfaces make their way into microcontrollers, and doubly so because the STM32U5 series (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/s/stmicroelectronics/stm32u5-series-ultra-low-power-mcus) is in stock for immediate shipment from DigiKey! We particularly like the feel of the STM32U599 as it has a l'il bit of everything without being top-of-the-line, and it comes in QFP (https://www.digikey.com/short/15vv8m9r) for easy integration no matter what fabrication setup you've got. Order some STM32's from DigiKey today and they will ship faster than you can render a bouncing ball, making its way to you by tomorrow afternoon.
