Democrats Deeply Divided, Virginia GOP's Uphill Battle, Another House Dem Dies

Join Jim and Greg for the Friday 3 Martini Lunch as they break down deep divisions among Democrats over the spending bill, the Virginia GOP's steep challenges in this year's elections, and the House Democrats losing two members in just over a week.First, Republicans finally get a chance to watch Democrats openly feud over whether to pass a spending bill to prevent a partial government shutdown. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer now reluctantly supports the bill, sparking an intense backlash from progressives. Jim also explains how Democrats are struggling to accept their minority status in Congress.Next, they wince at the prospects for Virginia Republicans in this year's elections. They usually don't go well for the party that holds the White House. Virginia is also home to the second most federal employees in the nation, and the DOGE cuts are likely to be unpopular in the DC suburbs. Republicans do have an excellent candidate in Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, but will the headwinds against her be too strong? Finally, they discuss the passing of Arizona Rep. Raul Grijalva, marking the second House Democrat to die in under two weeks. They note the oddity of Grijalva's X account continuing to post after his death and also examine how these vacancies will impact the House until special elections are held to fill those vacancies. Please visit our great sponsors:Oracle will cut your cloud bill in half—new US customers only, offer ends March 31st! Rep. Biggs: Time for Consequences for the Deep State Partisans Who Called Hunter's Laptop Russian Disinformation

National security leftists deliberately lied about Hunter Biden's laptop being Russian disinformation. Now we have clear proof it was a lie and it's time for those deep state actors to face some consequences.Less than a month before the very close 2020 presidential election, the New York Post reported that Hunter Biden left a laptop at a Delaware computer repair business and that laptop revealed all sorts of personal and professional malfeasance - from videos of Hunter's drug use and prostitutes to detailed explanations of family business dealings.Immediately, social media sites throttled the story and suspended its Twitter account. The mainstream media deliberately buried the story and condemned the Post and anyone else who touched it as wrong and reckless. But the most egregious effort to discredit the story came from 51 former national security and intelligence figures who signed a letter dismissing the laptop story as "having all the hallmarks of Russian disinformation." President Biden even cited the letter in a debate with President Trump as a way of trying to make the issue go away. And to some extent it did. Biden became president and a significant percentage of Biden voters said they would not have voted for him had they known about the laptop story and that the details were true. The FBI knew that all along the truth became indisputable this month when the Justice Department entered the laptop into evidence during Hunter Biden's felony gun trial. Now, Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs is leading the effort to strip those 51 signers of the fallacious letter of their security clearances.Rep. Biggs joins Sara today to discuss the unconscionable actions of those operatives in pulling a disinformation campaign on the American people and why there need to be consequences.Sara and Rep. Biggs also discuss the intelligence community setting Trump up for the Russian collusion hoax and trying to undermine his presidency at literally every turn.Biggs also stresses how critically important the 2024 elections are, what's at stake of Biden gets another four years, and why most Republicans in Congress are still clueless on the threats the left poses to the future of our nation.Time Stamps:0:05 We need to strip them of their clearances 8:05 Rep. Let's get into it:  COLORADO NEWSLINE: Denver mayoral candidates Mike Johnston and Kelly Brough sprint to the finish lineBY: CHASE WOODRUFF - MAY 30, 2023 4:00 AM       Left: Denver mayor candidate Kelly Brough receives the endorsement of the Greater Metro Denver Ministerial Alliance at an event on May 12, 2023. Right: Brough's runoff opponent, former state Sen. Mike Johnston, receives the endorsement of progressive former mayoral candidates and Democratic state lawmakers in Civic Center Park on May 10, 2023. (Chase Woodruff/Colorado Newsline)A half-million dollar contribution from former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg was part of a flood of large donations that has helped former state Sen. Mike Johnston open up a 2-to-1 fundraising lead over opponent Kelly Brough as the Denver mayor's race enters its final week.Advancing Denver, an independent expenditure committee supporting Johnston's run, raised more than $4 million through May 22.  The pro-Johnston super PAC has relied on many of the same out-of-state billionaire donors who boosted Johnston's gubernatorial bid in 2018, including Bloomberg, LinkedIn founder Reid Hoffman and hedge fund managers Steve Mandel and John Arnold. Kent Thiry, the former CEO of Denver-based dialysis giant DaVita, is the group's largest local donor, while venture capitalist Art Reimers and private equity CEO Eric Resnick have also chipped in with six-figure contributions.About three-quarters of Advancing Denver's haul has been spent on TV advertising in support of Johnston, with the remainder spent on digital ads and mail.Johnston and Brough had raised roughly equal amounts in direct contributions through the end of April, reporting total receipts of $932,060 and $895,612, for their campaign committees, respectively.  A Better Denver, the independent expenditure committee supporting Brough, has struggled to raise large sums since the April 4 first-round election, adding just $211,650 to the $1 million it had previously raised in February and March. To date, the group's top donor during the runoff is Pete Coors, former Republican nominee for U.S. Senate and prolific donor to conservative causes. Coors gave $50,000 to A Better Denver on April 24. Other top donors to the pro-Brough PAC have included real estate interests like the National Association of Realtors, Colorado Construction Industry Coalition and developer Lloyd Fulenwider. The Apartment Association of Metro Denver, a landlord group, has made contributions to both candidates. After giving $25,000 to Brough in February, the group followed up with another $10,000 contribution to Brough in late April, and a $10,000 contribution to Johnston a week later.Ballots for the city's runoff election were mailed earlier this month. Voters can return their ballot to a 24-hour drop box or vote in person until 7 p.m. on June 6.COLORADO SUN:Susana Cordova, former superintendent of Denver schools, will be Colorado's next education commissionerErica Breunlin and Jesse Paul9:13 AM MDT on May 30, 2023Denver Public Schools superintendent Susana Cordova at DPS headquarters on April 3, 2020. (Andy Cross, The Denver Post via The Associated Press)The state's Board of Education on Monday named Susana Cordova as the sole finalist among 23 applicants after a unanimous vote. Her appointment is expected to be formalized when the board next meets.State Board Chairwoman Rebecca McClellan told The Colorado Sun “We really appreciated her sharp focus on results for students and outcomes for students with an eye toward equity,”  “She's not only talked the talk, she's proven that she's capable of achieving gains for students.”Cordova will take over the position from Katy Anthes, who is stepping down from the role in July after serving as commissioner since December 2016.Cordova began her career as a bilingual language arts teacher and has since worked in education for more than 30 years, including as a teacher, principal, district leader and currently as a superintendent in residence for Transcend, a national nonprofit focused on helping schools make classrooms more equitable for all students.Cordova was also previously a deputy superintendent for the Dallas TX Independent School District.Cordova has also taught as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Denver's School of Education and now serves on the university's board of trustees.  Cordova will begin steering the state education department at a particularly consequential time for Colorado schools, as districts continue to help students recover from lost time and learning during the pandemic and as many communities struggle to recruit and retain educators and manage declining student enrollment.Susana Cordova, then superintendent of Denver Public Schools, looks on as students work on laptops in a classroom in Newlon Elementary School early Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2020. The school was one of 55 Discovery Link sites set up by Denver Public Schools where students could participate in remote learning during the pandemic. (AP Photo/David Zalubowski, Special to The Colorado Sun)Cordova will begin her tenure just as a state task force is considering changes to how Colorado evaluates its schools, which could potentially affect how much funding schools receive.Gov. Jared Polis celebrated Cordova's selection in a written statement Tuesday, saying   “Her prior work boosting academic progress and improving access to high-quality education for learners of all backgrounds as superintendent of Denver Public Schools is sure to benefit students across the state as she brings this passion and experience to this new role,” said Polis, a Democrat. “I look forward to working with Susana as a member of my cabinet as we continue to carry forward our bold education priorities.”   COLORADO SUN:Colorado GOP paid no staff in April while fundraising lags under new Chairman Dave WilliamsSandra Fish4:20 AM MDT on May 24, 2023Dave Williams speaks during a Republican state central meeting on March 11, 2023, in Loveland where elections for a chairman, vice chairman and secretary of the Colorado GOP were conducted. (Olivia Sun, The Colorado Sun via Report for America)If the Colorado Republican Party had employees in April, they didn't get paid.  It's the first time in at least 20 years the party didn't pay any employees. And the party's bank accounts have less money than the $120,540 a recent filing said the party had on hand, the GOP acknowledged in an addendum filed Saturday with the Federal Election Commission.  The Colorado GOP raised only about $58,000 in the first four months of the year, including less than $15,000 in April. The party spent more than $15,000 last month, with $9,100 going to health and dental benefits. It's unclear if anyone is working for the party; no staff is listed on its website. The lack of a payroll for a state party in Colorado is unusual.“There have been other cycles where the party pays only one or two salaries in the off year,” said Kristi Burton Brown, who chaired the party during the last election cycle. “If they want to run it all-volunteer, they certainly can.”The party raised only a little more than $18,000 in the first two months of the year, before Williams was elected chairman.  From January through April, Colorado's GOP spent more than $263,000. That compares with $539,000 spent in the first four months of 2021, another nonelection year when five people were paid for their work in April. Of this year's spending, $73,000 went to Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck for legal services.  “Anybody who gets elected state chair should probably prioritize raising money,” said Dick Wadhams, who ran the state party from 2007 to 2011 and has been critical of Williams. “You can't run an operation without money.”The state Democratic Party raised nearly $92,000 in April, and spent nearly $211,000, including about $26,000 on payroll for a half-dozen employees. That left the party with nearly $196,000 in cash at the end of April. The Democratic Party raised more than $419,000 in the first four months of the year, while spending about $454,000. The party's state-level account had nearly $32,000 at the end of March. And the Colorado GOP has trailed Democrats in political spending in the state in recent years.Campaign accounts or PACS for several of the state's top elected Democrats have donated to the federal party account this year including U.S. Sens. Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper; U.S. Reps. Diana Degette, of Denver, Yadira Caraveo, of Thornton, Jason Crow, of Centennial, and Joe Neguse, of Lafayette; Gov. Jared Polis; Treasurer Dave Young; and others. Hickenlooper also sent two emails recently asking people to donate to the state party. The Colorado GOP received $12,500 from the terminated 8th Congressional District campaign of state Sen. Barbara Kirkmeyer, of Brighton, in early March. It's the only money the party has received from Republican officeholders or candidates this year.Tagged:Colorado Democratic Party, Colorado Republican Party, Dave WilliamsABC NEWS:Arizona set for unpredictable Senate raceByTal AxelrodMay 23, 2023, 3:06 AM Democrats and Republicans can at least agree on one thing: They have no idea what's going to happen in next year's Arizona Senate race. The election is shaping up to be an unpredictable three-way contest in one of the nation's premier battlegrounds featuring an incumbent who left her party (Sen. Kyrsten Sinema), a polarizing conservative who remains a rock star with her base (Kari Lake), and a Democratic nominee-in-waiting who would represent a shift to the left for the historically moderate-minded state (Rep. Ruben Gallego).Sen. Sinema first set the stage when she switched from being a Democrat to an independent late last year. While she called that choice a "reflection of who [she's] always been," the switch also prevented a primary fight with Arizona Rep. Ruben Gallego -- and paved the way for something more unusual.State data shows just under 35% of Arizona voters are registered Republicans and 30% are registered Democrats, while 35% aren't registered with either party. If Sinema retires, the race to succeed her could feature Gallego, a Marine Corps vet and former House colleague of Sinema's who has become vocally critical of her, and Republican Kari Lake, a former TV anchor, election denier and 2022 Arizona gubernatorial candidate. Both Gallego and Lake are more associated with their parties' ideological flanks than the centrists who have historically won statewide.state GOP strategist Lorna Romero said "It's gonna be like nothing we've ever seen before in Arizona. I think what's going to make it nasty is obviously Ruben and Kyrsten don't get along personally. And depending on who the Republican is, if you get a firebrand like a Kari Lake again, we've seen how she's operated before, that's going to take it to another level."Nineteen operatives from both parties who spoke with ABC News for this story mostly thought that Sinema would run again, pointing to her ongoing fundraising and continued involvement in high-profile legislative pushes like on immigration.Senator Kyrsten Sinema questions witnesses during a Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee hearing in the wake of recent of bank failures, on Capitol Hill, May 18, 2023. Evelyn Hockstein/ReutersSinema, who previously served in the House for three terms, quickly thrust herself into the heart of several of the chamber's most significant and successful legislative efforts, including on infrastructure, same-sex marriage, guns and more. Her style of legislating has generated mixed reviews, with supporters pointing to her scorecard and liberal detractors saying she has been overly eager to water down Democratic priorities, including raising the minimum wage, supporting prescription drug pricing reform and scrapping the Senate filibuster as a way to codify abortion rights.Cesar Chavez, a former Democratic state lawmaker said "Overall, I think the state of Arizona is content with the work that Sen. Sinema done. The issues that Sen. Sinema has advocated for will definitely result in a positive tick in her numbers."Steve Slugocki, a senior adviser to Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, a former chair of the Maricopa County Democratic Party had the opposite view. He said, "I cannot stress enough how deeply unpopular she is. I traveled the state everywhere last year. The first question was always, 'What are we going to do about Sinema? How can we replace her?'"Sen. Kyrsten Sinema arrives at the Capitol, May 9, 2023. Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego speaks at a CHC event. Getty ImagesAll of this will play out in the larger context of the battle for the Senate, with the Democratic caucus holding a slim 51-49 majority, but defending 23 seats in 2024, making operatives eager to avoid a spoiler candidate, but without any agreement on who that would be.A former aide to Sen. Sinema said "She has shown she knows what it takes to win in Arizona. I look at these other candidates, and I do not see proven winners. "So yeah, as a Democrat, I'm nervous because I want to keep Kari Lake out of the Senate.""If she's in the race as an independent, Ruben's already at a disadvantage as a Democrat just because of the lower registration numbers that we have," said one former state lawmaker who is supporting Gallego. "So, it comes down to how many votes is Sen. Sinema going to take? Even if it is a very small percentage, any small percentage at all could tip this."To be sure, Democrats aren't the only ones wringing their hands.Republican strategists told ABC News that a three-way race with a Democrat and an independent with a Democratic background would normally be a boon to the GOP candidate. But failed 2022 candidate Kari Lake is looming in the wings and is coming off a narrow loss to Democrat Katie Hobbs, which many observers attributed to her embrace of baseless claims of 2020 election fraud.A source familiar with Lake's thinking told ABC News they're confident she'll run for the Senate, likely launching a campaign in the fall. This person also confirmed that Lake recently met with several senators, including National Republican Senatorial Committee Chair Steve Daines of Montana, and that with her broad name recognition and support from conservative voters, she would enter the race as the overwhelming primary favorite.GOP strategist Lorna Romero said "[T]he Sinema breakup from the Democratic Party looks good for Republicans on paper, theoretically. But I think that the big heartburn is what's going to happen out of a Republican primary, and are we just going to do the same ridiculous mistakes over and over again, and Democrats are just going to continue to win in the state,"Still, virtually every person who spoke to ABC News added the caveat that their analyses could end up being off given the unpredictable nature of a potential race with the incumbent running as the third-party candidate."We've never seen anything like that in Arizona," one Democratic strategist said. "I just think trying to predict anything right now, you might as well shake a Magic 8 Ball and see what it tells you." CONCERT PICK OF THE WEEK: Sir Richard Starkey MBE, otherwise known as Ringo Starr!! Sara is not a domestic terrorist. Are you? Of course, most of us are not, but the federal government is redefining the term to include parents who protest school board decisions or even Catholics who prefer the Latin Mass. Plus, they have no hesitation to invade your privacy and gather as much information on you as possible.Another, more formal, way that this happens is through the FISA courts, where the government gets a court to approve surveillance based on the supposed evidence already against you. As we've seen in recent years, this can be badly abused. So what do we do about it?Sara is joined by Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs to discuss the erosion of privacy perpetrated by our government and how he is approaching upcoming hearings on the future of the FISA courts. He also warns us about the massive tide of illegal immigration we will see after Title 42 expires next month.Sara and Rep. Find out more at ironapples.com https://www.wsj.com/articles/arizona-legislature-passes-15-week-abortion-ban-11648156791?mod=hp_lead_pos6 Arizona lawmakers passed a bill banning most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy, becoming the second state legislature to push through this restriction ahead of a pivotal Supreme Court decision that could alter the abortion rights landscape nationwide. The Arizona House of Representatives passed the bill in a 31-26 vote Thursday. It now heads to the desk of Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey, a Republican who has signed restrictions on abortion since becoming governor in 2015. A spokesman for Mr. Ducey didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday. The legislative efforts in Arizona follow similar moves in Florida, where Republican lawmakers earlier this month approved a ban on most abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy. These bills are similar to the Mississippi law at the center of a Supreme Court case that challenges the high court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision, which established a constitutional right to end a pregnancy. Similar bills in West Virginia and Kentucky passed one chamber in those state legislatures. The Arizona law, known as SB 1164, bars abortions in the state after 15 weeks of pregnancy, weeks earlier than current precedent established by the Supreme Court. The law allows for exceptions in medical emergencies. It doesn’t include exceptions for instances of rape or incest. Lawmakers who supported these bills say, if passed, the laws would allow states to more quickly and easily enforce abortion restrictions similar to Mississippi’s should the Supreme Court uphold the 15-week ban. Some Republican state lawmakers said they anticipate the court could either uphold this law or overturn Roe v. Wade. A decision is expected no later than the summer. Arizona Rep. John Kavanagh, one of the Republican lawmakers who introduced the 15-week ban and voted in favor of the bill Thursday, told The Wall Street Journal earlier this year he wished to prepare the state for either of those outcomes. Arizona is one of several states with pre-existing laws banning abortion that were passed before Roe v. Wade. If the high court’s precedent is overturned, the law could be resurrected. The Texas Heartbeat Act, which bans abortions after six weeks of pregnancy in the Lone Star State, is an exception. The law, which took effect in September 2021, created a new enforcement structure that allows private citizens to bring civil lawsuits against abortion providers as well as anyone who aids or abets an abortion after six weeks of pregnancy. Idaho Gov. Brad Little, a Republican, signed a similar bill on Wednesday banning abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. The legislation doesn’t grant officials enforcement authority and instead gives that power to private citizens—a precedent the governor expressed concerns over. To which Vice President Harris Tweeted: “Idaho Gov. Little signed an appalling bill yesterday to restrict abortion access after six weeks. This bill harms women, particularly those who are most vulnerable. We'll continue to fight to ensure all women have the right to make their own health care decisions.” The VP was also recently talking about the significance of the passage of time: https://twitter.com/RNCResearch/status/1505964846172491780?s=20&t=QdbTjWjZAaZB0xzLCbUwzQ Play video https://www.foxbusiness.com/politics/woke-home-depot-flyer-causes-online-stir The Home Depot became the subject of controversy online this week over an employee training pamphlet found at a Canadian location that was leaked on social media, sparking accusations that the company has gone "woke." Ashli Babbitt's Family Lawyer Says Cop 'Ambushed' Her on Jan. 6 with No Warning Elizabeth Stauffer August 6, 2021 at 12:28pm   Despite the chaos unfolding at the U.S. Capitol building on Jan. 6, just a single shot was fired — the shot that killed unarmed Air Force veteran and Trump supporter Ashli Babbitt, 35. Unbelievably, not a word was uttered about either the shooter or his victim during the opening hearing of the House select committee's sham investigation into the Capitol incursion. As the Babbitt family attorney, Terry Roberts, prepares to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the U.S. Capitol Police and the officer involved, believed to be Lt. Michael Byrd, a conflict is heating up over whether or not Babbitt was warned before the officer pulled the trigger. It should be noted that Byrd has reportedly been placed on a paid administrative leave from his position with the Capitol Police. RealClear Investigations' Paul Sperry has followed this story closely and addressed this situation in a new report. Trending: 29-Year Police Vet Debunks Massive Lie About Capitol Cop Suicides, Exposes Truth Behind Horrible Deaths Byrd's attorney, Mark Schamel, insists his client issued a warning and that he “did so loudly and clearly,” according to Sperry. “He was screaming, ‘Stay back! Stay back! Don't come in here!” Schamel said. Although I have no background in the law, shouting, “Stay back! Stay back! Don't come in here!” to a mob doesn't constitute a warning that an officer is about to shoot. It's a command. A true warning would mention that shots were about to be fired into the crowd. “He was acting within his training. Lethal force is appropriate if the situation puts you or others in fear of imminent bodily harm,” Schamel argued. Do you believe Ashli Babbitt received sufficient warning of lethal force? Yes No Completing this poll entitles you to The Western Journal news updates free of charge. You may opt out at anytime. You also agree to our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use. He said his client had been guarding a critical chokepoint and prevented a “potential massacre of lawmakers and staff.” Schamel went so far as to say, “There should be a training video on how he handled that situation. What he did was unbelievable heroism.” “Schamel said witness statements back him up,” Sperry wrote. “He explained the lieutenant's commands were not picked up on video recordings because the footage was shot on the other side of the doors where dozens of rioters were shouting and banging and drowning out his words. And he said his client could not be seen yelling out the instructions because his mouth was covered by a mask he wore as part of COVID-19 protections.” Sperry interviewed Roberts who said, “It's not debatable. There was no warning.” “I would call what he did an ambush. I don't think he's a good officer. I think he's reckless,” Roberts said. Related: 29-Year Police Vet Debunks Massive Lie About Capitol Cop Suicides, Exposes Truth Behind Horrible Deaths Shooting randomly into a crowd is reckless. Roberts told Sperry he has several witnesses who were with Babbitt and did not hear the officer issue “any kind of warning.” Roberts made the very compelling point that if Byrd had indeed issued a warning, why did no one react to it? His investigators, he told Sperry, had examined video which showed that none of the officers who were in the hallway with the shooter reacted before he pulled the trigger. He said none of them took cover or crouched or pulled their own guns as would have been expected had they heard a warning. Instead, he said that, just prior to the shooting, they'd been casually milling about in the lobby. “Those other officers were within earshot. If he's yelling, they certainly aren't showing any reaction to it,” he said. “If he was giving any kind of warning, why didn't they react?” A veteran Capitol Police officer, who reportedly spoke to Sperry on the condition of anonymity, said, “I'm not sure how he was justified shooting her when there was a SWAT team right behind her. They saw no immediate threat.” Sperry explained the SWAT team consisted of  “three heavily armed USCP officers who had positioned themselves between the doors and the mob.” This is an issue that Republicans have brought up repeatedly. They would like to see members of the SWAT team testify before the House select committee. Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar said, “They were right next to her and saw no threat, certainly no lethal threat. Why were there no warnings given or escalation of command and force in proper law enforcement technique?” Former Capitol Police officer Patrick Skinner told Sperry that “we were trained in what to do if gunmen tried to storm the Capitol, but we were not trained in what to do if hundreds of people decided to rush the building.” He explained that officers didn't know what they were facing on Jan. 6. The situation was unprecedented. Sperry also reportedly spoke to a former inspector general who reiterated what Skinner had said. “This is not meant pejoratively but just as a fact, but the [Capitol Police] is far from being some kind of elite law enforcement body. Its principal function is to assist tourists, maintain decorum in a tourist environment, and help out members of Congress and their staffs.” So far, Democrats and the DOJ have managed to shield the shooter from the legal consequences of those actions. We know that Capitol Police were overwhelmed by an unprecedented situation (which could have been prevented had House Speaker Nancy Pelosi not rejected then-President Donald Trump's request for 10,000 National Guard troops to be present, but I digress.) Neither the DOJ nor the Democratic Party can protect the officer from the Babbitt family's wrongful death lawsuit. Roberts can call the members of the SWAT team standing right behind Ashli Babbitt that day or anyone else he chooses. And Schamel is kidding himself if he considers his client's shout of, “Stay back! Stay back! Don't come in here!” inside of the chaotic and noisy House chamber to be a proper warning of lethal force.

On this episode of The Critical Hour, Dr. Wilmer Leon is joined by Attorney John Buris, known for his work in the areas of Civil Rights with an emphasis on police misconduct and excessive force cases raising federal questions under Federal Code Section 1983. Roy Oliver, a white former Texas police officer, was found guilty of murder yesterday in the April 2017 shooting of Jordan Edwards, 15, a freshman honor roll student who was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car. He was killed instantly. Oliver could face up to life in prison. Officer Michael Rosfeld has been charged with one count of criminal homicide in the June 19 shooting death of Antwon Rose Jr. in Pennsylvania. Is this an indication that there might be a shift in responses by prosecutors and the public to police shootings of unarmed individuals? This would be just in time, as a new study shows that militarizing police units has a negative effect on communities, triggering higher levels of violence, distrust towards law enforcement and discrimination. There are major winners and losers from Tuesday's primaries in Arizona and Florida. What does this mean going forward to the midterms? The most closely watched race was the Republican primary for the Arizona Senate seat vacated by retiring GOP Sen. Jeff Flake. Last night, Arizona Rep. Martha McSally prevailed with relative ease, setting up a November showdown with Democrat Kyrsten Sinema. A retired military officer, McSally served in the United States Air Force and rose to the rank of colonel. becoming one of the highest-ranking female pilots in the history of the Air Force. She was quite clear on her opinion of the late Sen. John McCain: he was a great guy, but as a politician, he was not the standard. What does this say to you about Republican politics? In Florida's governor's race, the Democratic primary saw a shocking upset! Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum defeated establishment pick Gwen Graham. Gillum supports a progressive agenda: a Medicare-for-all single-payer health care system, abolishing ICE, raising the minimum hourly wage to $15 and raising the corporate tax rate to pay for education. He earned endorsements from Bernie Sanders and Tom Steyer. Before Gillum's win, he was coming in at just 16 points in the most recent polls. In the general election, Gillum will face Florida Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis, who has the backing of President Donald Trump. Gillum is his party's third black gubernatorial nominee this campaign season, along with Stacey Abrams in Georgia and Ben Jealous in Maryland. His victory comes as Democrats have elevated an increasingly diverse field of candidates, including women, African-Americans and Muslims. But Democratic establishment leadership is resisting this growing sentiment within its base. Four in 10 Americans struggled to pay for basic needs such as food or housing last year, according to a new study from the Urban Institute, a Washington-based think tank. Despite a growing US economy and a low unemployment rate, 39.4 percent of Americans between 18 and 64 years old said they experienced at least one type of material hardship in 2017, such as difficulty paying for housing, utilities, food or health care. "Economic growth and low unemployment alone do not ensure everyone can meet their basic needs," the authors wrote in a report. In Donald Trump's “booming” economy, food insecurity was the most common challenge, with over 23 percent of households struggling to feed their families at some point during 2017, followed by troubles paying a family medical bill, reported by about 18 percent of respondents. The findings came as a surprise among researchers with the Urban Institute, who had expected to find a high level of hardship among poor Americans but hadn't predicted so many middle-class families would also struggle to meet their basic needs. I guess not everyone is feeling the boom.GUESTS: John Burris — Lead attorney and founder of the Law Office of John L. Burris.
