A 5th generation military man called by a purpose to serve our country, Commando Heston Russell put his life on the line in 5 tours of Iraq & Afghanistan. His calling to serve & willingness to sacrifice his life on the front line, filled him with pride until our country turned their back on him. Branding Heston a war criminal, the ABC released doctored footage and accused Heston of committing a war crime. Proving he wasn't even in the country at the time of the incident & that the footage had been manipulated, Heston was not only cleared of the accusations but he also won a landmark defamation case in the Federal Court against the ABC. Throughout this process, the politicians who had formerly called on Heston for his expertise did not answer his calls for assistance & the Australian Defence Force did not reach out to even check in on him once. Heston was abandoned by the people he served whilst in the fight of his life. However, now on the other side of a more tumultuous time, I was privileged to share this incredible conversation with him. There are a few things I admire about Heston. Of course, his service to our great country is one of them, but at the core of this incredible man is one of the most powerful stories & unique personalities I have had on the show. Here is what to expect for our chat:- Crushing all stereo types, Heston now openly speaks about his sexuality as a gay man - one of the very few who have walked his path in life to do so. - He shares some absolutely hilarious stories in the conversation that had me in stitches. The more wholesome message though is the importance of embracing who you truly are to live a fulfilled life & reconnect with your purpose in life.- We break down & discuss the mindset & character required to be a high performer in the special forces.- Heston intimately shares the words he wrote in death notes to family & friends before heading off on his most dangerous deployments. He believes that this is one of the most powerful exercises you can do to find inner peace & channel high performance.- We speak about leadership & why it seems to be lacking in Australian politics.- All of this & so much more in one of my all time favourite episodes of the show.Follow Heston & I on socials @bradleyjdryburgh @hestonrussellGo to https://hestonrussell.com/book for his incredible book! @HestonRussell on YouTube. If you enjoyed this episode, subscribe to the channel so that I can continue to interview the best guests from around the world & share the most entertaining & insightful conversations with you.Big love,Brad xx Hosted on Acast. On this week's podcast, I speak with Ashley Semmens. Ashley spent 18 years in the Australian Navy, enlisting in 2005 into the direct entry program as a Clearance Diver. Ashley deployed multiple times, which included Op Resolute Border Security, OP Manitou, a human remains recovery in Tongan deep waters, and two deployments to Afghanistan on OP Slipper providing Explosive Ordinance Disposal (EOD) Reconnaissance to the Infantry combat team whilst on patrol in Afghanistan and during the withdrawal of Afghanistan in 2021. In 2022, he was medically discharged at the rank of Chief Petty Officer, now he volunteers his time to the Clearance DiverTrust. Clearance Divers (CDs) are the Australian Defence Forces' specialist divers. CD tasks include specialist diving missions to depths of 54 metres, surface and underwater demolitions, and the rendering safe and disposal of conventional explosive ordnance and improvised explosive devices. Ash is about to take on his toughest challenge yet, he has set his sights on becoming the first person to swim the English Channel — in a peculiar backwards manner. To achieve the record, Ashley will need to swim on his back for more than 15 hours, not in a traditional backstroke, but dolphin kicking while facing the sky, with minimal use of his arms. He said preparing for the 34.2-kilometre swim was as much mental as physical. The kicking is effectively how I would work in my previous profession, he said. But as a clearance diver, I will be taking mental resilience into the swim. The channel swim is set for June 2025 and aims to raise money for the Navy Clearance Divers Trust. Good luck, Ash, you got this! This is a raw story owning all your faults and redemption! Warrior Soldier Brigand: Institutional Abuse within the Australian Defence Force by Ben Wadham, James Connor Amazon.com Flinders.edu.au Questions of institutional abuse have been at the centre of numerous royal commissions, inquiries and reviews of the clergy, the police and defence forces over the past decade. This scrutiny has highlighted how those organisations foster forms of violence and violation. One of their principal characteristics is that the culture of abuse and its perpetration is largely the work of men. In Warrior Soldier Brigand, Ben Wadham and James Connor argue that three pillars shape the patterns of abuse in the Australian Defence Force: martial masculinities, military exceptionalism and fraternity. Historically, the military has been an almost exclusively male domain, but since the Vietnam War it has become an all-volunteer force and more culturally diverse, a change that has proven to be profoundly challenging, and one the ADF has not always readily welcomed nor sufficiently addressed. While the ADF may train and accommodate some of the best military personnel in the world, it has not resolved the use of that violent potential against its own. Exploring the fundamental paradox that underpins abuse in the military, Wadham and Connor report on the shifting landscape of the ADF since 1969.

The article reports on a recent episode involving Chinese warships conducting drills off the Australian coast, sparking political debate. Australia's Defence Minister urges a calm approach, emphasizing adherence to international law, as Australian vessels also operate near China. The Coalition criticizes the government's response, viewing it as downplaying the strategic implications and exposing failures in Australia's China strategy. The Foreign Minister defends the approach, asserting that stabilization doesn't equate to agreement with all Chinese actions. The Coalition also raised concerns about delays in the Australian Defence Force receiving formal notification of the drills. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today, I'm joined by Thomas Nhan Tri Nguyen who has a fascinating story that I wanted to learn more about. From music halls to the battlefield and now boardroom, Thomas (or Tom's) journey is anything but conventional. Tom is of Vietnamese heritage. He grew up in Adelaide, the only child of migrants who were fleeing war-torn Vietnam. While his early years were filled with music and academia, he started his working life as a public servant in the Queensland Government. A desire for a greater challenge led him down an unexpected path: the Australian Defence Force.Commissioned as an artillery officer in 2007, Tom served with distinction as a troop commander, navigating the complexities of field operations during a pivotal era in Australia's military engagements. But Tom wanted more and it was then he discovered the world of management consulting and reinvented himself once again. An MBA from INSEAD in France launched him into the global stage with McKinsey, where he worked across 15 countries before returning to Australia to establish his own strategic advisory practice.Tom's story is one of curiosity, courage, and constant reinvention—a testament to the power of stepping outside your comfort zone. Today, he applies lessons learned from both the battlefield and the boardroom to help others navigate their own transformative journeys. SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 136*Discovering the Origins of MagnetarsA groundbreaking study reveals that magnetars, highly magnetic neutron stars, are born from stellar mergers rather than single star supernova events. These findings, published in Nature, delve into the origins of fast radio bursts (FRBs), which are high-energy flashes releasing more energy in nanoseconds than half a billion suns. The research indicates that FRBs are more common in massive star-forming galaxies, suggesting a link to magnetars formed from stellar mergers. This discovery challenges previous assumptions about magnetar formation and sheds light on the dynamic processes in the universe.*Voyager 1 Approaches One Light Day from EarthNASA's Voyager 1 spacecraft is set to become the first human-made object to travel more than a light day's distance from Earth, a monumental 26 billion kilometers away.
