David Deane-Spread is Founder of Metattude, a leadership and business turnaround consultancy focused on behavioral transformation. With more than 25 years of experience coaching CEOs and executives, he has worked across Australia and Europe in both public and private companies. Trained in leadership within the Australian Defence Force and law enforcement agencies, David brings a disciplined, systems-based approach to business transformation. Through Metattude, he helps organizations prevent failure by aligning leadership behavior, culture, and strategic execution. In this episode… Business turnarounds are rarely about strategy alone; they are about leadership behavior and organizational culture. Many companies attempt to fix performance issues through systems or restructuring, without addressing the attitudes and conversations driving results. How can leaders shift their thinking and behavior to prevent failure and create sustainable growth? According to David Deane-Spread, successful turnarounds begin with understanding that culture is the sum of attitudes, behaviors, and conversations inside a business. He explains that leaders must first diagnose root causes, align around new behavioral standards, and develop the courage to have necessary conversations. By mastering the four controllables — thoughts, feelings, words, and actions — leaders can shift outcomes and prevent costly strategic mistakes. On this episode of Top Business Leaders Show, John Corcoran welcomes David Deane-Spread, Founder of Metattude, for a conversation about preventing business failure through leadership behavior. David shares his ABC framework of attitudes, behaviors, and conversations, explains why culture drives customer experience, and breaks down the Intel case study to show how fear-based decisions can destroy value. He also outlines practical steps for aligning teams and driving growth.

Have you ever spent over a fortnight in Antarctica? Jess Styles recounts a fabulous experience with Homeward Bound doing exactly that!My guest today is Jess Styles who earlier this year spent 16 days on a ship in Antarctica with 120 other women leaders in STEM. Not only did she learn a lot about leadership, ice and penguins... she had the opportunity to self-reflect and heal having undergone cancer treatment only months before. Join Jess and me for this fascinating reflection. Jess, on what she learned:"In Antarctica, we saw extreme nature and got to see places no human has ever set foot in before which was really special. With 120 other STEM leaders onboard our ship over the 16 days, I learned a lot about leadership and what kind of leader I aspire to be. A big part of my learning was self-discovery. Taking time out for me was really important and I'd encourage everyone to do that: take time out for yourself because it isn't selfish - it's needed. It was very freeing to have that time to work out what I really want to do."Links:For Career & Leadership coaching, connect with Rebecca Allen on Linkedin or visit the Illuminate website Rate, Review, & Follow our Show on Apple Podcasts:Also, if you haven't done so already, follow the podcast. In this episode of the Contested Ground podcast, hosts Phil Tarrant, Liam Garman, and Major General (Ret'd) Dr Marcus Thompson unpack two unfolding challenges shaping Australia's strategic outlook, an Iran-linked cyber breach exposing sensitive defence data, and China's latest move to outmanoeuvre Canberra in the Pacific. The discussion opens with the major cyber breach linked to Iran-aligned actors, exposing sensitive information from Australian defence programs through vulnerabilities in overseas contractors. Thompson warns that modern military platforms are now fully digital extensions of the network, and that the Australian Defence Force risks becoming collateral damage without stronger supply-chain defence. The hosts then turn to the Pacific, where China has unveiled a record $86 million aid package to Vanuatu, a direct counter to the Albanese government's stalled security pact. Garman notes the diplomatic setback highlights the limits of Australia's traditional leverage, with Port Vila reluctant to jeopardise its economic ties with Beijing. The conversation also covers China's commissioning of its first fully indigenous aircraft carrier, signalling a major step in Beijing's push for blue-water naval capability. In this episode of the Defence Connect Spotlight podcast, host Steve Kuper is joined by Mark Gainsford and Matt Dodds of Systematic to discuss the digital transformation shaping the Australian Defence Force. The trio also examine how, in an era of renewed great power competition, the ADF must adapt to warfare defined by data, speed and contested information environments. They highlight that the pace of technological and operational change demands tools to cut through "information noise" and deliver decision superiority. Artificial intelligence and analytics can help achieve this, but only when paired with strong training and trust. Moving on, they discuss the importance of testing and refining AI through realistic digital simulations, enabling adaptation to changing conditions without the cost or risk of live training. They also talk about the role of digital infrastructure in preparing warfighters for degraded and contested communications environments, where jamming and disruption are common. Investing in resilient, upgradeable systems ensures the ADF maintains operational tempo and confidence in complex conditions. Finally, they discuss investing in sovereign digital infrastructure, trusted AI and realistic simulation today so the ADF can build the integrated, information-led force needed to out-think and outfight its adversaries – mastering in training what must never be learned in combat. In this episode of the Defence Connect Spotlight podcast, special returning host Liam Garman is joined by Lockheed Martin's Josh Woodward and Wayne Harrison to discuss the transformational impact of the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System for the Australian Defence Force. The trio discuss the range of ways HIMARS will serve as a significant transformation in Australia's approach to littoral and long-range strike warfare. They also discuss how HIMARS, when armed with precision-guided munitions such as the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System and the longer-range Army Tactical Missile System – and soon to be integrated with the Precision Strike Missile – enables land forces to engage high-value targets at ranges exceeding 500 kilometres. This blurs traditional boundaries between land and maritime domains, allowing the Army to contribute meaningfully to joint strike missions once reserved for the Air Force or Navy. Finally, they discuss how HIMARS is more than an artillery platform – it represents a strategic enabler within an integrated joint fires network. When linked with persistent surveillance, space-based sensors, and command-and-control systems, HIMARS provides the ADF with a flexible, scalable, and responsive strike capability. The 31st Australia-Papua New Guinea Ministerial Forum was hosted in Canberra on Monday [[Oct 20]], focusing on the implementation of the historic mutual defence treaty signed between the two countries earlier this month. The 'puk-puk' treaty will see Australia invest millions of dollars in the PNG defence force. A key part of the deal is a taskforce to recruit PNG citizens into the Australian Defence Force, but this has been criticized by former PNG defence personnel who claim the pact is harmful because PNG does not share Australia's fear of China.

The latest episode of the Australian Aviation Podcast spotlights two finalists in the 2025 Australian Aviation Awards, with host Steve Kuper joined by Daniel Wang, head of programs for ATC and air defence at Rohde & Schwarz, and Rodney Sciortino, head of civil air traffic control. Together, they explore how the global technology company is delivering cutting-edge solutions across both the defence and civil aviation sectors, from deployable ATC towers to AI-driven technologies, cyber security safeguards, and the growing role of drones in airspace management. One of the standout capabilities they discuss is the transportable air operations tower (TAOT), a mobile system supporting both the Australian Defence Force and civilian organisations. The TAOT provides critical flexibility for operations in austere environments, disaster relief zones, and even during major events like the Avalon Airshow. As Wang says, the system allows the ADF to project air power and sustain operations from remote airfields, while Sciortino highlights its civil applications, from ensuring continuity after natural disasters to supporting firefighting aircraft and temporary tower upgrades. The trio also discuss Wang and Sciortino's journey to Rohde & Schwarz, and how the company's blend of global innovation, local experience, and cross-sector expertise is helping shape the future of air traffic management in Australia and the wider Indo-Pacific. It’s been described as a loophole by some, “the great gas scam” by others, with taxpayers estimated to be missing out on $13 billion because of it. And we're not just missing out on money, it’s also costing us cash, with the gas sector and untapped exports contributing to surging gas and electricity prices too.
