Behind the walls of H.H. Holmes' "World's Fair Hotel" waited trap doors, gas chambers, and a basement of acid vats — and more than a century after the Murder Castle burned, something still lingers at 63rd and Wallace.EPISODE BLOG PAGE (includes sources): https://weirddarkness.com/HHHolmesHotelREAD or DOWNLOAD the full transcript of this episode: https://weirddarkness.tiny.us/57djvd7fFEATURED STORIES IN THIS EPISODE: It's one of the most infamous and macabre subjects of Chicago history – it even served as inspiration for TV's “American Horror Story: Hotel”. It's what has become known as “The Murder Castle” where serial killer H.H. Holmes committed his monstrous crimes. But even today, Holmes continues to terrify… in spectral form. (H.H. Holmes' Hellish Hotel And Lingering Haunting) *** A woman tries to save the soul of her daughter, believing her to be possessed… but her solution to drive out the demon was to murder her daughter using a holy crucifix. (Murder By Crucifix) *** What's worse than proclaiming yourself to be a supernatural being and starting your own cult? How about telling your followers you are God so you could do drugs and have sex with teenage girls? It's the disturbing true story of the cult called “The Group”. (Theodore Rinaldo – The Drug Cult Rapist) *** Shrunken heads – believe it or not, they are real. And some tribal peoples create them even today – from real human heads. But why do it at all? We'll look at the reality behind shrunken heads, the reason they are created… and even how they are created. (The History and How of Shrunken Heads) *** A terrifying series of paranormal activities invade a family's home in Wales. (The Swansea Entity) *** Tenome is a Japanese Urban Legend about a blind man who was robbed and murdered. His dying wish? To have eyes on his hands so he could see. (The Seeing Hands of Tenome) *** Unsolved mysteries are intriguing simply because they are unsolved. That's why we are so fascinated by stories of people disappearing without a trace. But one man's disappearance is so bizarre, so weird, that upon hearing the story you'll be scratching your head wondering what the heck you just heard. Copyright ©2026, Weird Darkness.Originally aired: November, 2021This episode of Weird Darkness moves from the haunted ground of H.H. Holmes' Chicago Murder Castle to a flesh-eating Japanese yokai, a millionaire's impossible vanishing at sea, an Oklahoma exorcism that ended in murder, a violent Welsh poltergeist, the real-world practice of shrinking human heads, and the Washington State drug cult led by a man who claimed to be God.It opens in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood, where Herman W. Mudgett — better known as H.H. Holmes, America's first serial killer and the inspiration for the Hotel Cortez in American Horror Story: Hotel — built his three-story "World's Fair Hotel" at 63rd and Wallace to prey on visitors to the 1893 Columbian Exposition. The building held sixty rooms riddled with trap doors, hidden staircases, gas chambers, and a basement furnished with a dissecting table and vats of acid and lime. Holmes confessed to 27 murders before his hanging in Philadelphia on May 7, 1896, though some historians put his victim count at 200 or more, and the strange deaths that followed his execution — a poisoned forensics expert, a suicidal prison superintendent, a priest beaten to death in his own churchyard — fed talk of a Holmes curse for decades. The site was never excavated, and employees at the Englewood post office built beside the old Castle property still report stacking chairs, a singing woman no one can find, and apparitions on the grass where the hotel once stood. Even Holmes' own descendant, Jeff Mudgett, author of Bloodstains and the figure behind the History Channel's American Ripper, walked out of that basement a changed man. From there the episode crosses to Japan and the legend of Tenome, a blind old man robbed and beaten to death in a field who returned as a vengeful yokai with eyes on the palms of his hands. First recorded in the Gazu Hyakki Yagyō, the creature hunts graveyards and open fields by scent, feeds on fresh human bones, and inspired the Pale Man of Pan's Labyrinth. The segment ends with the Kyoto tale of a young man who hid from the Tenome inside a locked temple chest — and was found afterward as an empty sack of skin, his bones sucked out through his flesh.Next comes the 1931 disappearance of Hisashi Fujimura, the Japanese-born silk millionaire who vanished from the Red Star liner Belgenland somewhere between Halifax and New York on the night of August 13. Fujimura had told a friend he feared gamblers would follow him aboard, his mistress Mary Reissner was registered under a false name as a governess, and his bank account had dropped from over $333,000 to $2.65 in five months. The ship's captain saw him talking to an unseen person at 2:45 a.m.; by morning his bed was unslept-in and his seven-year-old daughter was alone in the stateroom. Federal investigators closed the case without answers, a dust-free wallet bearing his name later surfaced in an empty Manhattan flat, and Fujimura was declared legally dead in 1938 — leaving murder, suicide, accident, and a staged escape all equally possible. The darkness turns domestic with the 2016 killing of 33-year-old Geneva Gomez in Oklahoma City, beaten to death by her own mother, Juanita Gomez, who claimed she was performing an exorcism to drive Satan from her daughter. Juanita punched Geneva repeatedly, forced a crucifix and religious medallion down her throat, then arranged the body in the shape of a cross with a wooden crucifix on her chest. A forensic psychologist concluded she was feigning incompetence, the insanity plea collapsed, and in January 2018 a jury needed only 20 minutes to convict her of first-degree murder and recommend life without parole. The episode then travels to Rhondda Street in Swansea, Wales, where in 1965 Marcia and David Howells, their two small children, and Marcia's grandmother endured a poltergeist that began with choking sensations in the night and escalated to bottles flying off mantelpieces, rooms ransacked in minutes, the gas stove turning itself on, and a double bed found hurled on top of the baby's empty cot behind a barred door. Police, reporters, and a priest all came to the little house; the only room ever left untouched was the grandmother's. The family finally moved out, the activity stopped, and no tragedy in the home's history was ever found to explain it — leaving psychokinesis, spirit attachment, and Marcia's own verdict, a demon, on the table. From haunted houses the show turns to a practice that is grimly real: the shrunken heads, or tsantsas, of the Jivaro people of northern Peru and southern Ecuador. Warriors severed the heads of slain enemies in the belief that shrinking them enslaved the victim's vengeful spirit, then boiled the skin free of the skull, packed it with hot stones and sand, blackened it with charcoal ash, and sewed the lips shut to seal the spirit inside — reducing a human head to a third of its size. Nancy Guthrie, eighty-four, the mother of NBC Today co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, was reportedly abducted from her residence in the Catalina Foothills community near Tucson, Arizona, on or about February 1, 2026. Bloodstains at the scene were confirmed as Guthrie's. Her Bluetooth-enabled pacemaker disconnected from her phone at approximately 2:30 a.m., suggesting movement out of range. Surveillance footage captured a masked individual on Guthrie's porch carrying a backpack investigators identified as a big-box retail purchase. No arrest has been made. No suspect has been publicly named. A multi-agency task force led by the FBI is conducting the investigation.Multiple ransom notes have been delivered to media outlets rather than the family — a pattern former federal agents have characterized as highly unusual. The most recent note demanded cryptocurrency in a split payment structure, creating two separate potential tracing opportunities. Former FBI agents have publicly noted the bureau's demonstrated capability in cryptocurrency recovery, citing the Colonial Pipeline case among others. The institutional handling of the case has drawn significant scrutiny. Reporting indicates the sergeant supervising the initial response had been in the role for approximately six months and lacked prior experience with comparable cases. Sources within the department state that experienced detectives had been reassigned, allegedly due to loyalty considerations rather than performance deficiencies. One veteran detective was reportedly returned to duty only after the case escalated to a multi-agency task force. The department's search and rescue aircraft was reportedly grounded because its pilot had been transferred to patrol duties. A DNA hair sample was sent by the Pima County Sheriff's Office to a private laboratory in Florida, where it remained for eleven weeks before being transferred to the FBI laboratory for advanced testing. The FBI has publicly stated the material was requested over two months prior.Retired FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer provides analysis of the ransom note pattern, the forensic and procedural handling of the critical initial response window, and the investigative implications of the evidence profile — which she characterizes as consistent with a local, unsophisticated actor.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? The Shroud of Turin is a relic housed in the cathedral in Turin Italy and claimed to be the burial cloth of Christ. The Gospels give us some details: Matthew 27:59-60 ESV "And Joseph (of Arimathea) took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen shroud and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut in the rock. And he rolled a great stone to the entrance of the tomb and went away." Mark 15:46 ESV "And Joseph bought a linen shroud, and taking Him (Jesus) down, wrapped Him in the linen shroud and laid Him in a tomb that had been cut out of the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb." Luke 23:53 ESV "Then he (Joseph) took it down and wrapped it in a linen shroud and laid Him in a tomb cut in stone, where no one had ever yet been laid." John 19:40 ESV "So they (Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus) took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen cloths with the spices, as is the burial custom of Jews." Shroud of Turin A linen shroud approximately 14 feet long, 3 1/2 feet wide. Pastor shares a picture of the shroud. It's very hard to discern what shows on the shroud. But on May 28, 1898 Secondo Pia (1855 - 1941) received permission to take a picture of the shroud. The photographic negative ended up being an image of a man's brutalized face. He said "I think I may have been the first person in centuries to see the face of Jesus!" In the following years many others have used developing technologies in photography to take photos of the shroud. Pastor shares his pictures and how it shows the person has been crucified and brutally whipped with over 300 lacerations. Many people have asked the last 100+ years if this is indeed Jesus. Shroud of Turin Research Project (STURP) a group came to examine and test the Shroud 1978 - 40 U.S. scientists, multiple institutions and laboratories. Went to Turin Italy - 5 days, 122 hours, to study the shroud, fully expected to find a forgery Tests- large variety of tests and equipment And in the following years 1978-1981 they spent an additional 100,000 - 150,000 hours of intensive study on the results of their testing. And made their final report in 1981. 1981 STURP Report Findings Image is on the top surface of linen fibers. The image is only .2 - .7 microns - that's several hundred times thinner than a human hair) Identity - it is the image of a scourged and crucified man. Approx 5' 11" tall around 178 lbs. Origin - No evidence of paint of pigment Bloodstains were found of hemoglobin + serum albumin - which is evidence of a person having been horrifically tortured. 3D data - used a VP8 Image Analyzer (developed for the space program) and discovered that what is recorded on the shroud had 3 dimensional properties. Mechanism - how was it produced - unknown For an insider's view of the study "Report on the Shroud of Turin" published in 1983 by John Herbert Heller. (A member of the Shroud team). The book caused many questions to start emerging. Pastor shares an article "On the Physical Death of Jesus Christ" from the JAMA Journal of the American Medical Association from March 21, 1986, Volume 256 and the impact that article had on him. Pastor goes further into the continued testing over the years. Here are the latest results: 2013 - (FTIR) Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy indicated the Shroud was 2,000 years old 2013 - Raman Spectroscopy also reported the Shroud to be 2,000 years old 2022 - (WAXS) Wide-Angle X-Ray Scattering was used and it showed the Shroud to be 2,000 years old. Research continues: Physicist Paolo di Lazaro and team at ENEA Labs, after 5 years and hundred of failed attempts to reproduce an image like the shroud, concluded that to make the imprint on the Shroud it would take 34 trillion watts of radiant energy for 1/40 billionths of a second. (An energy level greater than all the energy plants in the world combined) Final Observations: 2000 year old Linen Shroud Crown of Thorns Abrasions on shoulders from carrying Crossbeam Nailed to the cross, not tied Has a side wound, no broken bones Rushed burial - as body was not washed Brief entombment Could this be the burial shroud of Jesus? Pastor shares an interesting quote from the book by Heller and then shares that he believes it is certainly possible that this is the burial shroud of Jesus! Now What? Megyn Kelly is joined by former FBI agents James Fitzgerald, co-host of "Cold Red Podcast," and Maureen O'Connell, co-host of "Best Case Worst Case," to discuss where the Nancy Guthrie investigation stands six weeks after her disappearance, their reaction to a resurfaced 2013 video of Nancy on the Today show, what a perpetrator could have learned from the clip, the latest messaging from the sheriff about threats to the public and possible motive, why it is hard to trust what he is saying at this point, how long it can take to build a case against a suspect, reports of additional photos being recovered from Nancy's Nest cameras but not from the night of the crime, what may be in the pocket of the man in the initial video and photos released by the FBI, whether the perpetrator could have used a WiFi jammer or had an accomplice, and more. Plus, certified bloodstain pattern analyst Amy Santoro joins the panel to discuss the blood droplets found outside Nancy's home, what kind of injuries the stains could be a result of, what the trail and pattern of the droplets could reveal to investigators, and more. Arnulfo Reyes lay on the floor of Room 111 for 77 minutes. Shot twice. Pretending to be dead. Listening. Waiting for help that wouldn't come fast enough. The only surviving teacher from that classroom took the stand in the Adrian Gonzales trial and described May 24, 2022, in detail the jury will never forget. He saw a "black shadow" in the doorway. Watched fire come from the gun. Took a bullet to his arm and fell. Then he heard the shooter kill every single one of his students. All eleven children in his classroom died. The gunman taunted him. Splashed Reyes' own blood on his face. Shot him in the back. When prosecutor Bill Turner asked if any of his students survived, Reyes gave a two-word answer: "No, sir."Earlier in the week, crime scene photographs showed jurors what investigators found inside Room 111. Pools of blood. Drag marks. Bloodstains dried on desks and textbooks. A child's tennis shoe soaked red. Former Texas Ranger Juan Torrez testified that trajectory rods placed into bullet cavities showed the shooter fired downward — through the desks — at children who were hiding underneath.Judge Sid Harle warned the gallery. No family members left. They passed tissues and watched for over an hour.Defense attorney Nico LaHood pressed Reyes on the unlocked doors throughout the school — including the door to his own classroom. Reyes admitted locking it was his responsibility. The defense wants the jury to see failures everywhere, not just in Adrian Gonzales.Gonzales faces 29 counts of child endangerment. The prosecution says he knew where the shooter was and didn't act. The defense says he did what he could in chaos. Sixty witnesses remain. We're diving into Bloodstains, written by Jeff Mudgett, a direct descendant of one of America's most notorious figures, H.H. Holmes. Holmes, as you may know, was a 19th-century serial killer, believed to have murdered dozens, possibly even hundreds, of victims in his infamous 'Murder Castle' in Chicago during the World's Fair. But this book isn't just a biography of a distant relative—it's a haunting memoir of Jeff's journey as he uncovers his connection to a man who is widely considered one of history's first serial killers. It's a tale of self-discovery wrapped in horror, mystery, and unanswered questions. We'll explore the book's key revelations, its eerie blend of fact and speculation, and what it might be like to face the disturbing possibility that you share blood with a monster. When no one came to the door, the officers forced their way inside, where they found Smart, his wife, and their eleven-year-old son all dead from gunshot wounds to the head. A week later, Peter Manuel was arrested and charged with the murders of the Smart family, but in time the police in Lanarkshire would learn that was only one of Manuel's horrific crimes.Thank you to the incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research!ReferencesBirmingham Post and Gazette. 1958. What happens when forensic science is later found to be false? ----- Forensic science is a cornerstone of our criminal justice system. Unfortunately, not all sciences used to prosecute people are reliable. So what happens when forensic science is later debunked? Does that mean everyone convicted by it goes free? The short answer is no. Tune in to hear why.
Bloodstains is the startling tale of one man's search for the truth after inheriting the personal diaries belonging to his great-great-grandfather who, he discovers, was America's first and most notorious serial killer Herman Webster Mudgett. Better known by his alias H.H. Holmes, Mudgett was the mass murderer who struck terror in the nation by being the proprietor of the infamous Murder Castle and stalking the streets of Chicago during the 1893 World's Fair. During his incarceration awaiting execution, well over a century ago, Holmes admitted killing 27 innocent victims, but the evidence the author locates indicates hundreds more likely. From his investigation, Jeff Mudgett, the direct descendant, learns that Holmes' reign of terror was worldwide and not limited to Chicago as has been so widely believed. Based upon never-before-revealed historical facts, Jeff pieces together a dynamic and extraordinary puzzle, including the strong possibility that Holmes was also Jack the Ripper. Far more than a documentary, Bloodstains is precariously balanced on the very edge between non-fiction and the paranormal, as the author's research of his evil ancestor quickly takes on a personal aspect. Jeff soon fears that his efforts may have awakened the legendary "Holmes Curse" of the 1890s - the one investigated and written about by most of the nation's major publications, including The New York Times. In fact, the deeper he digs into Holmes' devilish past, the stronger the monster's hold on him seems to become, testing the limits of his own sanity as well as humanity. Racked by a mysterious and never before experienced epilepsy, Jeff suffers crippling grand mal seizures whenever he disobeys the haunting voices in his head. Finally, with nowhere else to turn, Jeff is forced to make the decisions of his genetic lifetime in a life-or-death struggle in order to win the greatest prize of all: his survival.

Bloodstain pattern experts falsely claim that they can identify the culprit of violent crimes by examining the shape and distribution of bloodstains from a crime scene. But, bloodstain pattern evidence has no grounding in any verifiable science. So how did this kind of junk science become admissible? Josh Dubin, civil rights and criminal defense attorney, explores bloodstain pattern evidence with Pamela Colloff, senior reporter at ProPublica and staff writer at The New York Times Magazine. New video has emerged of Bryan Kohberger having interaction with police. This time, in a traffic stop a month before the murders take place. Also newly released in information that police found a padlock for a storage unit. Police believe Kohberger cleaned out that unit and his apartment before a search warrant was executed. Documents state that police found 60 reddish-brown stains. Two of those stains were found on a pillow and a mattress. They tested positive for blood. Other than the stains, police found little else in the apartment. Even the trash cans were empty. Bombshells in the Murdaugh courtroom today as the defense asked for the jury to be taken to Mozelle. Defense attorney Dick Harpootlian said he wants the jury to see the family's rural hunting lodge, so before jurors move to deliberations, they will be allowed to walk through the crime scene. Alex Murdaugh's defense team began their day in court by calling Buster Murdaugh to the stand. He insisted that his father was “heartbroken” and “destroyed” after finding the bodies of his wife and son. The disgraced lawyer seemed to wipe away tears as his son said, “He asked me if I was sitting down … he sounded odd and then he told me that my mom and brother had been shot.” We also learned in testimony that just after discovering the bodies, Murdaugh searched online for a popular South Carolina restaurant. His phone records show a search for ‘Whaley's Edisto' in Safari browser” at 10:40 p.m. This timeline shows Murdaugh was still at the crime scene just 15 minutes after the first cop arrived. The restaurant he searched is one of the oldest in Edisto — where the Murdaughs' main house is located. Later in the testimony, a forensic expert testified that Alex Murdaugh was too tall to be the shooter.
