In this episode, I discuss how to implement a body weight only exercise program, to kick start your resistance based workouts. Our body weight is a physiological free weight, in that it's not attached to a fixed frame or object for support or function. Our upper and lower body limbs, make up a large part of our anatomy and subsequently we are naturally predisposed to workouts focusing on arms and legs. Whilst this is okay, it's important to ensure our core muscle groups are also challenged for strength, stability and functional movements. The good news is we generally don't require anything to start bodyweight workouts, other than floor space and adequate lighting, therefore most rooms in our homes are sufficient to use for a starting base. A spare bedroom, dining room, kitchen or even the garden can all provide us with enough space for on the spot exercise. Find out in this podcast, things to consider when starting at home, work or outdoors and get moving for a healthier body. Can cross-training supercharge your running performance and keep injuries at bay? Tune in and find out!Timestamps of big takeawaysBenefits of Cross-Training[01:17] There is a common misconception of cross-training as just another cardio session. But, it can include strength training.Strength Training for Running[02:46] Strength training for running is about getting strong enough to hold and balance one's body weight, which is crucial for peak running performance.[03:55] Strength training plans RunRX has developed can be done in conjunction with running because they focus on body weight exercises rather than heavy lifting.Bodyweight Exercises[05:31] Bodyweight exercises are sufficient for most runners, but RunRX does offer options for adding dumbbells or barbells for those who want to add more strength work.Core Strength Movements[06:16] Coach Caroline asks about the core strength movements they recommend, such as toe touches and plank pulls.[07:29] Coach Valerie explains that RunRX focuses on exercises that work the whole body and mimic the coordination needed for running, such as shoulder taps, toe taps, and glute bridges.Coordination in Running[08:05] Coordination in running is critical and the RunRX exercises we recommend help develop this skill.Caution with Cross Training[09:31] Use caution when trying new, strenuous activities on cross-training days, as they may lead to soreness that could be mistaken for running-related pain.[10:36] Cross-training should be a supplement to the main running training and many daily activities can count as cross-training.Joining the RunRX Membership[12:17] We invite you to join the RunRX membership for access to our training plans, gait analysis, and support for various running goals.Rate, Review & Subscribe ReminderDon't forget to like and subscribe to our show. Pena's quote really stuck with me, because it perfectly encapsulates success as a whole, including in strength and fitness endeavors — it's not a “journey” (unless you like spinning your wheels and don't care where you go). It's a process. And not just ANY process — it's a process that has to have two things - both of which (and much more) I dive into on this podcast.

Get my 9-Minute Kettlebell & Bodyweight Challenge FREE here: http://www.9MinuteChallenge.com  Pullups are, without a doubt, one of the few truly essential exercises. Climbing, hanging, and generally pulling yourself upward is a skill that's been passed down to us from our ancient forefathers til today. While they needed it for different reasons (climbing to escape predators, climbing to find food, etc) for our purposes the benefits of overhead pulling are in strengthening the back, arms, grip, and abs (yes, even abs) — all of which will greatly increase your usable, real-world strength in leaps and bounds, make your shoulders resilient, and start helping you fight back against the ravages of PPP syndrome (piss-poor posture) caused by sitting all day and just generally not moving a lot. But what if you CAN'T do a single pullup yet? This episode will give you some insights on how to nail your first one (without one of those silly rubber band setups, too) here's a video demo: https://youtu.be/IG9qHQfoWNM

I'm really excited to introduce you to Natalie Jill. She used to be known as a fat loss expert. She's been on the cover of over 15 magazines, fitness magazines, nutritional magazines, you name it. She's amazing. But now at 51 herself, she's helping change the conversation around aging. Our society, especially in the United States, really idolizes the teens and the twenties. And it's like "Once you hit 30, you're past your prime!" I mean, we need more conversations and inspiration. Like Natalie, who can help us see that age is just a number.  We can age chronologically and be so grateful for that because of the wisdom in our years, the things we've learned, the experiences we've had. But biologically, we get a choice in how we want that to happen. So Natalie makes it fun. She opens up the conversation, she gives tips and helps people understand how to do that. So no matter what age you are, this is a really inspiring story. And she just gives some really great tips and practical information on how to upgrade yourself at any age.  Enjoy.   Find Natalie on: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nataliejillfit/ Website: https://www.nataliejillfitness.com/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/nataliejillfitness Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/nataliejillfit Timestamps: 5:53 - How to Look and Feel Younger at 50 11:04 - F.A.T = False Assumed Truths 13:22 - How to Change Your Mindset Around Aging 16:44 - Do These 3 Things to Age Well 20:39 - Synthetic vs Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy 24:04 - Why Blood Tests Are Not Enough for HRT 26:04 - Energy Medicine Is the Future of Medicine  30:06 - Muscles, Lifting Heavy, Bodyweight Exercises 32:18 - Air Squats: The Best Way to Squat? 35:53 - How Natalie Was Eating Gluten-Free Even Before It Was a Thing
