When she moved to Paris, she started taking photos of street style and became one of the first famous street style bloggers.  [25:31] The “New York Chapter” and how it gave her more freedom and a feeling of acceptance than Paris.  [29:34] Being in the New York fever lasted about 10 years, where creativity was at the forefront, but health and nervous system balance wasn't a priority.  [31:26] It comes with a cost, but sometimes we do have to put ourselves out of balance to move our energy forward.  [37:50] Garance felt tired of what she had created, and needed a break. She moved to LA, and felt a crash of adrenal and creative burnout.  [41:50] Garance's journey of deciding not to have children, and mourning that certain vision of femininity.  [52:53] Not having a child is also a birthing moment for a woman, as she's born to herself in a different way.  [58:03] Our “aha moments” don't come quickly all the time, and wisdom and acceptance of life situations and lessons learned often come slowly.  [1:04:20] Garnace talks about some of the growths she has made over the recent decades and learning to protect her solitude.  [1:09:07] Garance's morning routine of starting her day with writing and then moving her body before lunch and a nap.  [1:15:33] The concept of the third place, and how isolation is a huge problem in our modern day society.  [1:26:06] Nitsa talks about how soil has become her latest muse.  [1:30:13] What are the non-negotiables in beauty and skincare? [1:31:45] Garance talks about starting DORÉ skin care and the brands philosophy.  [1:37:18] The definition of beauty is a personal one. Garance talks about training the eye of how she defines and sees beauty, and surrounding herself with people that have that same vision.  [1:42:04] When it comes to skincare, the French know that less is always more and it's best to keep things simple.  [1:46:04] Lunch is a big affair in Corsica, so for Garance's last meal, she would enjoy a big family feast. Dogs would be looking for scraps under the table, music would be flowing, and it would be a Mediterrean-based lunch with fish, meat, and all the fresh vegetables one can imagine.

About the Restaurant: https://lovesante.com/ @eatatsante Santė is a contemporary global fusion with a Beyond organic farm to table heritage, using traditional and classic regional diction with thoughtful, local and organic growers and to guide guests through the ever changing landscape of the booming Arizona culinary movement. The restaurant reinforces our scratch kitchen philosophy with handmade breads and pastries, in-house cured lox pickled veg, and produce and animal products from the best regenerative farms and ranches. The menu changes regularly based on seasonal fresh produce. The global fusion cuisine is amplified by an exquisite, purposely-curated wine portfolio and a celebrated cocktail program. Designed with thoughts and inclinations of old Hollywood in 1920's and biophilic design creates a feeling of decadence that compliments the nature of the cuisine. Sante is a romantic, vibey space where one could have a blast at Sunday brunch or be comfortable finishing a bottle of wine with friends until closing time. About Nico: https://www.healthcoachnico.com/about-nico @ roundtheworld on IG I began my journey 15 + years ago learning about the power of alternative healing, energy, meditation and mindfulness when I studied Chinese Bodywork and therapies at Southwest Institute for Healing Arts. The last five years I have focused on meditation, personal growth, coaching and nutrition. I received my Health Coaching certification from The Institute for Integrative Nutrition, Nutrition Science from Stanford and Finished a 300 Hour Yoga teacher training at Modo Yoga international. As well as received a certification as a Psychological Fitness Specialist from The Human Potential Institute I specialize in working with busy people, helping them find solutions to their lifestyle and health. Naturally supporting those with Gut and Brain Health issues and helping them learn how the two are related has become my life's work. I truly believe that food is medicine. I've devoted myself to the understanding, acknowledging and sharing of where food comes from and how it can affect the body. What we take in creates who we are, from aspects of the food we eat to the people we surround ourselves with. I believe in making sure that when others take in what I put out into the world, they not only come away healthier and happier, but also more educated about how they can stay that way.

As I've mentioned before, I found yoga during university which was a particularly challenging time in my life. Yoga was my saving grace and ultimately connected me to my dharma (a Sanskrit word for purpose). I completed my first yoga teacher training with Modo Yoga right after I graduated university and it catapulted me onto this lifelong path of healing. While at my yoga teacher training I remember approaching one of the co-founders of Modo Yoga, Jess Robertson, teary eyed after a lecture she gave. I went up to her and asked “How do you practice forgiveness?” and without missing a beat she said “I practice Metta Loving Kindness”. She scribbled down the practice into my notebook and I have been working with it ever since.Metta Loving Kindness is a profound meditation technique that gave me deep compassion for myself and the most difficult people in my life. It is not a one and done kinda deal. You have to really sit with and work with this meditation over a prolonged period of time. (Jess prescribed me one month, but it turned out to be more like a few years for me to find forgiveness for certain people). This recording is my own interpretation of the Metta Loving Kindness practice that Jess gave me over eight years ago. I will be forever grateful for this teaching that has been passed down through countless teachers and students and now I pass it down to you. In preparation for this meditation I recommend that you set yourself up in a silent and peaceful place. I recommend that you allocate time to journal after you complete the meditation as it is sure to bring up some strong feelings that you will want to sit with and process after. If you complete the meditation, I'd love to hear from you. May you be happy. May you be peaceful. May you be free from suffering. May you find the ease and the joy of well-being. Today I am welcoming our first male YT to the show - and it's fitting to me that it ended up being the person you are about to hear from. Jake Waters is one of my friends from teacher training and he and I talk about the winding and unexpected path that we all take towards our purpose. We chat a lot about how authenticity is the most powerful tool we have as teachers and how to keep in-check with yourself when things fall out of alignment as they tend to do. Jake is a really special human who is near and dear to my heart. A little bit about Jake… He was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He first found yoga in college when a close friend recommended he try a heated vinyasa class at Yoga Landing. After the class, Jake was hooked on the practice and used it as a tool to connect his body to his mind. He completed his YTT in 2016 under Yoga Landing's founder, Jessica Jollie. From 2014 to 2020, Jake pursued a multitude of certifications working as a group fitness instructor around Southeast Tennessee teaching yoga, cycling, bootcamps, tabata, kickboxing and strength training while maintaining his personal practice of Ashtanga and vinyasa yoga. His classes are challenging, but accessible to EVERYONE and combine his love of music, movement and breath while encouraging his students to “be real and meet themselves exactly where they are” each and every time they step on the mat. He believes there is no right or wrong pathway to yoga. It's a powerful tool for each individual to use to meet their unique spiritual, mental and/or physical needs. Jake currently resides in New York City working and maintaining a regular practice at his second home, Modo Yoga. Over the last 18 months or so, I have been a loud advocate for yoga teachers not relying on studios & gyms for their sole source of income. In Australia, the median rate of pay for yoga teachers is around $50 AUD per class. At 15 classes per week, a teacher would make $750.00. The national minimum wage is $753.80.We all know that to teach a 60 min class, at a bare minimum, a teacher needs to be at the studio/gym for 15 minutes before/after class. Let's be moderate, and add 1 hour per class for travel & prep time. This means to teach 15, 60 min classes, a teacher is required to invest at least 38 hours of their time. Teaching 15 classes is a full-time job. However, as a previous studio owner myself, I don’t think this reality means that we need to pit yoga teachers & studio owners against each other. My guest, Thy Monzo has owned a yoga studio in Sydney for the last 6 years, and in today’s conversation Cora and Thy get real about the reality of owning a yoga studio. We also chat about the role that a yoga studio can play in a teachers career, and why a blended business model could support both the teacher and the studios. ABOUT THY Thy began practicing yoga over 15 years ago as a way to find calm and peace from the stresses of University, and everyday life. After her first yoga class (ashtanga), she felt amazing. Breathing, sweating, and fully living in the moment, she had never felt more connected to life. Thy believes that the best part of teaching is learning; learning more about the postures, about people and their bodies, and more about herself. Her classes are fun and dynamic, with a sense of lightness. Her hope is that students carry their positive energy from practice, off their mats and into their daily lives.PODCAST HIGHLIGHTSThy’s vision for opening her studio in 2015 with Modo YogaWhy Thy decided to not renew her franchise contact with Modo YogaThe reality of running a yoga studio during the pandemicWhy there's no such thing as an overnight success How Thy is balancing teachers pay rates with other opportunities to increase their earning potentialMaking pay rates transparent, and creating a clear pathway to growth for teachersWhat it means to be entrepreneurial inside of a studio communityThy’s best advice for anyone wanting to start a yoga studio in 2021FIND THY MONZOThy’s personal InstagramNow Yoga InstagramNow Yoga WebsiteFIND CORACora’s NewsletterThe Teachers ClubCora’s InstagramFor links & resources mentioned in this episode go to www.corageroux.com/episode64Support the show (https://www.corageroux.com/theteachersclub)

In this episode we had a wonderful conversation with Modo Yoga and Seed Cafe owners Phil and Ryann Doucette. We learned how both businesses came to be and how they were built with the idea of building a non-harming community.  "Modo Yoga Studio is a community of inspired students, joined together by our love of yoga, our commitment to protecting the earth, and our drive to bring more peace into the world. We are a place for all." We learn about the yoga concept of ahimsa, which means nonviolence and non-harming to other living beings.  Phil shares his transformation of becoming more aware of his physical body and mindset through yoga, which resulted in becoming less angry and more peaceful.  Both Phil and Ryann share how you can create a practice of reducing harm and creating more peace, both to ourselves and others.   They will share simple tips and techniques to incorporate ahimsa into your daily lives. In 2013 Phil and Ryann got divorced and the dream of opening the cafe got put on hold.  They spent the next years rebuilding their family in a new way.  Their work was always rooted in love and respect, as they jokingly called it the ‘yoga divorce'.  They used all the things they learned in the practice of yoga to help move forward in a healthy way and eventually they opened the plant-based Seed Cafe (which is delicious and located in Minneapolis). Seed Cafe was a twelve year dream that came to life a few years ago as they both knew that food was a powerful way to bring people together.  You can find Modo Yoga and Seed Cafe on: IG: @seedcafempls @modoyogampls FB: https://www.facebook.com/modoyogampls/ https://www.facebook.com/seedcafempls/ Web: http://www.Modoyogaminneapolis.com For a free yoga class use the code "Podcast." Thy Nguyen began practicing yoga over 11 years ago as a way to find calm and peace from the stresses of school, and everyday life. She first stumbled upon ashtanga yoga, it was amazing; love at first practice. Breathing, sweating, and fully living in the moment, she had never felt more connected to life. Soon after Thy discovered Modo hot yoga and her life was changed forever. After a number of yoga trainings, she made the decision to pursue her passion for yoga and become a full-time teacher. Thy truly loves teaching yoga, spreading the yoga love to everyone. She feels lucky, and blessed to have studied with a number of brilliant teachers including Jessica Robertson, Ted Grand, Ryan Leier, Rameen Peyrow, Bryan Kest, Sarah Powers, and Judith Hansen Lasater. She loves sharing her knowledge and passion for all aspects of yoga with her students and the community. She also believes that the best part of teaching is learning; learning more about the postures, about people and their bodies, and more about herself. Her classes are fun and dynamic, with a sense of lightness. Her hope is that students carry their positive energy from practice off their mats and into their daily lives. Emily, a Toronto native, was first introduced to yoga in New York City where she was studying theater and the art of becoming an anxiety-ridden insomniac! At the time, the thought of Yoga meant slowing down, which meant terrifying and seemed better suited for “hippies” and “tea people”, not she! But after accidentally stumbling into her first class, she was shocked to discover that this “slowing down” was not only the most challenging sweaty work-out she’d ever had, but for the first time in ages, she felt calm. Excited and inspired to learn more, she began her study and practice of Yoga.   Emily completed one of Moksha Yoga’s first 800-hour teacher trainings in Thailand where she was lucky enough to study with Susi Hately Aldous, Ted Grand and Jessica Robertson, Frank Boccio, and more. It was on this trip that Emily, Deena and Jess planted the seed of a distant dream to one day open Moksha Yoga LA…   Cut to: Years later. Emily now lives in LA, teaches Yoga privately all over LA, is the creator of Yoga Theater for Kids (which she taught in schools, and foster youth programs throughout Los Angeles), has just finished performing her LA debut of her One-woman show…when Deena said something like “Ok, so are you ready to open up Moksha Yoga LA yet now, or what??”, to which she said yes and the rest is history.   Emily is grateful to her teachers both present and past such as Annie Carpenter, Kia Miller, Bryan Kest, Gurmukh, Liz Olesky, Jasmine Lieb, the Robertson Family tree, her wonderful meditation mentors, Jeanne Pisano and Ken McLeod and to her students, the greatest teachers of all. Emily also has a passion for philanthropic work. Within the first two years of being open, Moksha Yoga LA raised over $160,000 for charities around the world. Founder of Sweat for Change has raised $115,000 for Little Kids Rock

Includes a 15 min guided meditation. This week we sit down with Emily Morwen, who is the co-founder of Modo Yoga LA! Emily talks to us about several transitions in her life that led her to open her yoga studio here in Los Angeles, which so happens to be next door to our DEN Meditation La Brea location. After leaving a long term relationship and making the big move from Canada to the U.S., she decided to put her acting career on hold to pursue another passion. Emily is an inspiring example of following your path and intuition even when it leads you in a different direction than planned. She tells us stories from her first experiences in L.A. trying to make money, starting with small steps such as posting flyers for private yoga lessons. It wasn’t long after that she decided to focus all her energy on opening her own studio with her co-founder, Deena Robertson. Modo Yoga started originally in Canada and has over 80 locations worldwide, all with individual owners who collectively meet every year to create a like-minded community focused on acceptance and diversity. Emily talks to us about what makes this community so special, why practicing hot yoga resonates with her, and how she incorporates her own grounding techniques (such as singing) into her yoga classes.
