In recognition of Alcohol Awareness Month, we are joined by George Koob, PhD, director of the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA). Dr. Koob talks about his background and career journey, along with major insights made through his research, including regarding alcohol withdrawal. He addresses stigma related to alcohol use (or abstinence from) and offers advice for the next generation of researchers and clinicians in this exciting and dynamic space, with so much potential for expanding knowledge. Dr. Koob shares resources for individuals, family members, physicians, or anyone looking for information related to alcohol use and alcohol use disorder, including Rethinking Drinking and the NIAAA Treatment Navigator. He emphasizes the importance of motivation (e.g., motivational interviewing) rather than confrontation and seeing your doctor, or encouraging your loved one to see their doctor, for a physical as a good first step in addressing any issues related to alcohol use. Dr. Koob finally explains his motivation for continuing his work in this field. In addition to serving as director of NIAAA, Dr. Koob is also a senior investigator at the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse where he directs the Neurobiology of Addiction Laboratory in the Integrative Neurosciences Research Branch. As an authority on alcohol use disorder, drug addiction, and stress, he has contributed to our understanding of the neurocircuitry associated with the acute reinforcing effects of alcohol and drugs and the neuroadaptations of the reward and stress circuits associated with the transition to dependence. He has published over 800 peer reviewed papers; mentored 13 PhD students, 85 post-doctoral fellows, and 11 K99's (Pathway to Independence Award postdoctoral researchers); and authored several books including the Neurobiology of Addiction. He received his PhD in behavioral physiology from Johns Hopkins University in 1972. He did post-doctoral studies at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research and the University of Cambridge (England). He subsequently held positions at The Salk Institute and the Scripps Research Institute. Dr. Koob is the recipient of many honors, including membership in the National Academy of Medicine (USA) and award of the Legion of Honor (France). My guest for this episode is the author, blogger, and writing coach Ruth Leigh. I met Ruth relatively recently through a mutual friend and she has spoken at a conference I organized in Cambridge England in 2021. Ruth is a warm and funny person and that generosity of spirit that she has, that has been gifted to her by God comes out in what she says and what she writes. In this episode, we talk about trusting that we are assured of God’s precious love for us as His children and that he wants the best for us, the fact that everyone has a story to tell, and how important it is for us to follow those little nudges that God gives us through the prompting of His holy spirit. For those of you who are based in the UK or can get to the UK in September of this year, 2022, Ruth will be speaking at the Christian writer’s conference in Cambridge on Saturday 3rd September, and there are still some tickets left for that event. I had a wonderful time talking to Ruth, as I always do, this is her story.

Dr Ross McKean qualified as a doctor in the UK in 2013, his career so far seeing him working across 8 different hospitals across the country, as well as a year working as a medical and neurology registrar in New Zealand. In this time as well though, he resigned twice from roles he no longer felt served him well. These apparent failures in his eyes became a major stimulus for rethinking how he could remain a doctor, however. So, rather than leaving the profession completely, he persisted with locums and working abroad, until he fell back in love with medicine, landing on what he feels is his true calling, family medicine. Now in his second year working as a GP trainee in Cambridge England, Ross has also developed a steady following with his company Medizom, which he founded in 2019. Through Medizom, Ross inspires people to find solutions to becoming so called medic zombies, who shuffle lifelessly through their daily work and careers. The solution, he says, is to be more human, and find your own path. His website, medizom.com provides a wealth of resources then to help doctors and medical students remain compassionate to themselves, colleagues and patients, as well as spark ideas of how to find the next way forward when you feel the walls are closing in. Ross eventually plans to settle in Sweden, where his fiancée is from, and is well on the way to reaching this goal, after he qualifies as a GP in 2023.
An introduction to cochlear dead zones—or the absence of the inner hair cells in a region of the cochlea where the basilar membrane vibration can't be detected—by perhaps the world's foremost authority on the subject. He also describes his Threshold Equalizing Noise (TEN) Test for identifying cochlear dead zone regions. Dr Moore describes how these regions might be created, possible tell-tale signs and tip-offs for presenting in a patient, and their implications for treatment of hearing loss and hearing aid fittings. Seville, Spain has a climate that features very hot, dry summers and mild winters with moderate rainfall. Like most Mediterranean climates, Seville is drier during summers and wetter during winters. Summer is the dominant season and lasts from May to October. Seville has the hottest summer in continental Europe among all cities with a population over 100,000 people, with average daily highs in July of 97 °F. Average daily lows in July are 67F and every year the temperature exceeds 104 °F on several occasions. A historical record high for all of Europe of 50.0 °C (122 °F) was recorded on 4 August 1881. This record is somewhat disputed as several in the science community believe that the thermometer used wasn't officially calibrated and measured. Some say a high of 118 in Athens in the summer of 1977 was really the all-time record. I know that was a hot season in Europe first hand, as my wife and I, spent the summer months there that year. Interestingly in the summer of 2019 more national temperature records where reached than any other year when among other countries the temperature maxed out at 102 in Cambridge England, 109 in Lingen, Germany and also 109 in Paris France for an all-time city record. This week's show is with Dean Radin PhD, who is Chief Scientist at the Institute of Noetic Science (IONS), Distinguished Professor of Integral and Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), and a science adviser for several startup companies. His original career track as a concert violinist shifted into science after earning a BSEE degree in electrical engineering (magna cum laude, with honours in physics) from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and then a Masters in electrical engineering and PhD in psychology from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. For a decade he worked on advanced R&D at AT&T Bell Laboratories and GTE Laboratories. For over three decades he has been engaged in research on the nature and capacities of consciousness. Before joining the research staff at IONS in 2001, he held appointments at Princeton University, University of Edinburgh, and SRI International, where he worked on a classified program of psychic espionage, now commonly known as StarGate. He is author or co-author of over 300 scientific, technical, and popular articles, four dozen book chapters, two technical books, and four popular books including the Scientific and Medical Network's 1997 book award, The Conscious Universe (HarperOne, 1997), Entangled Minds (Simon & Schuster, 2006), the 2014 Silver Nautilus Book Award, Supernormal (Random House, 2013), and Real Magic (Penguin Random House, 2018). Entangled Minds, Supernormal and Real Magic are available as paperback, e-books, and audio books. These books have been translated into Spanish, French, German, Italian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Romanian, Latvian, Turkish, Czech, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and Arabic. His 100+ academic articles appear in peer-reviewed scientific journals ranging from Foundations of Physics and Physics Essays to Frontiers in Human Neuroscience, Psychological Bulletin, and Psychology of Consciousness. He was featured in a New York Times Magazine feature article; and he has appeared on dozens of television programs around the world. His 500+ interviews and talks have included presentations at Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Columbia, Cambridge (England), Edinburgh (Scotland), The Sorbonne (Paris), University of Padova (Italy), and University of Allahabad (India) . His invited talks for industries have included Merck, Google, Johnson & Johnson, and Rabobank, and his government talks have included the US Navy and US Army, the Naval Postgraduate School, DARPA, the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (India), the International Center for Leadership and Governance (Malaysia), and the Australian Davos Connection (Australia). In 2017 he was named one of the 100 most inspiring people in the world by the German magazine, OOOM, and as of 2018 his filmography on IMDB lists 18 documentaries he's appeared in. Note: Dean is not a therapist, nor a psychic or a paranormal investigator. He is a scientist who studies psychic phenomena. If you are disturbed by psychic experiences, he recommends that you contact a psychologist or psychiatrist knowledgeable about these experiences. Another resource is the Spiritual Emergence Network. In this show we explored Dean's incredible life's work on the topic of real magic! We explored the reasons magic has been so put into shadow in our culture, his scientific studies on this topic and lastly why magic is anything but a fantastical, dreamy, made-up topic - it's actually the most important conversation we could be having as a species right now. This is such a treasure trove of a show - I'm delighted to be able to share it with you.
The View from Brindley Mountain: A Memoir of the Rural South by Eugene Scruggs Second Edition This nonfiction work takes the reader on a trip through the 1940s and ’50s in the rural South. The story unfolds in the lower reaches of the Appalachian Mountain chain on a plateau called Brindley Mountain. A part of the Sand Mountain Ridge, the area covers lower Morgan County and north east Cullman County. In an earlier time, the Choctaw, Chickasaw, Cherokee, and Creek hunted in relative peace across these ridges and valleys of north-central Alabama. In 1873, a young, rebellious Bavarian named Johann Gottfried Cullmann came into the area seeking a peaceful haven for his immigrating countrymen. He ultimately selected a large swath of this gently-sloping and pine-forested wilderness for his new Deutsche Kolonie. Other hardly pioneers began to homestead the free federal lands. This produced a rather odd mingling for the rural South. A fledgling town grew rapidly with its blacksmith shops, cotton gins, grist mills, ice house, and merchant class. On a hardscrabble farm south of this bustling county seat, a young boy grew to manhood dreaming of future journeys and conquests. On the back porch of a little clapboard house, this would-be traveler contemplated the wide horizon stretching out in all directions, full of seemingly endless possibilities and challenges. Dr. C. Eugene Scruggs retired following a long career as professor and administrator in higher education. Dr. Scruggs’s career covered forty years at four US universities and two European. He was visiting professor at the University of Paris and a tutor for a summer program at Cambridge England. During his career, Scruggs led many study tours to Europe, Central and South America. He served two terms as chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at the University of South Florida in Tampa. Following his retirement, Scruggs published three books and coedited one other. His lifelong hobby has been art. He has created several hundred watercolor and pastel painting. More recently his passion has been vocal music, from Barbershop to Gospel, to Western. Scruggs currently lives in a retirement community in Lakeland, Florida, where he is actively involved in educational and enrichment programs for senior citizens. He welcomes comments from readers via e-mail at scruggsgene@aol.com. https://www.stratton-press.com/books/the-view-from-brindley-mountain-a-memoir-of-the-rural-south/ http://www.bluefunkbroadcasting.com/root/twia/strpress1.mp3

In this time of isolation, Olivia Meehan thought it might be interesting to consider the art of looking, the practice of seeing and describing, and in the case of podcasts, the serenity of just listening.Hence in this special series, she will be exploring a few of the Museum From Home programs and guiding the audience to appreciate the selected collections around the world through the art of looking. Helping us all learn a new language since its 2007 foundation, subscription-based language learning app and e-learning platform Babbel offers more than 10,000 hours of content in 14 languages, from Spanish to Indonesian. In this episode, we had the very welcome opportunity to sit down with the company’s Berlin-based Chief Product Officer, Geoff Stead — an internationally regarded thought leader on emerging technologies and how they can be used for learning, communication and collaboration. Geoff, a native of South Africa who originally trained as a Computer Scientist, told us why the unique cultural milieu of the Federal Republic’s capital suits him and Babbel’s specific internal culture, about a career that has included stints at mobile chip leader Qualcomm as well as English language certification leader Cambridge English. We then cover a set of topics ranging from his personal journey from South Africa to San Diego to Cambridge (England) and now, Germany; the central place of tech in everything Babbel does, and its mission: to help everyone fall in love with learning a language (again); the profile of the kind of people Geoff wants to join his team (from data experts to behavioral scientists to instructional designers); why embracing ambiguity is a good way to avoid the dangers of generalizing about your customers; why 'nudging' has to be different in different parts of the world to work; and finally, how the brain may not have changed… but maybe the way we use it has.

“...the child operates as a powerful figure in our society, where children can mobilize anything, from anxieties about same sex marriage to fears about children in detention, and all these things that we see in our own society today.” Dr. Annie McCarthy, who teaches anthropology at the Australian National University, tells our own Jodie-Lee Trembath about the moral pitfalls of aid and development in the slums of Delhi, India, how the poor and the young take power back from NGOs that may inadvertently objectify them, and how “stunting,” a term that should describe low height for age, becomes a shorthand for cultural assumptions about family life. Annie also talks about teaching, what it's like to research children, and the importance of getting to know “the anthropologist behind the anthropology.” Find Annie's work on her Academia page, or follow her on Twitter at @anni_mc. CITATIONS Ferguson, James. (1990). The anti-politics machine : "development," depoliticization, and bureaucratic power in Lesotho. Cambridge [England] ; New York : Cambridge University Press UN Convention on the Rights of the Child: http://www.ohchr.org/EN/ProfessionalInterest/Pages/CRC.aspx [accessed 7 Jan 2018] QUOTES “We've all seen those images of those children with the bloated bellies and the fly-besotted eyes… We're very familiar with the rendering of that kind of abject state of child poverty and the way it's used as a kind of lever to get donors to generously part with their money." “...the word ‘stunted' was just so much more than a kind of bodily referent, you know, I just felt like, well, you know, you don't know anything about me. You don't know what I might do in my life, you don't know where I might go in my life. You know, maybe I'm going to be a few centimeters shorter than I would have been, but who even knows what I would have been? Who are you to say that my life is somehow less than it could have been?” “It's eugenics that enables this population norm to measure people against.” “It's like, okay, these kids have survived, but the rest of their lives are kind of called into question by these paradigms, and the life of the nation [India] more broadly.” This anthropology podcast is supported by the Australian Anthropological Society, the schools of Culture, History, and Language and Archaeology and Anthropology at Australian National University, and the Australian Centre for the Public Awareness of Science. This week on the podcast I’m bringing back a conversation I had in Cambridge England with Daniele Quercia and Luca Aiello of Bell Labs. This focus recently has been on data mining and aggregation which has led to sensory mapping in cities. With this information they have been able to map smell, sound, and how people feel on their favorite walking routes.
~ Dr. Patricia Brown, Phd, DVM. Energy medicine is both a complement to other approaches to medical care and a complete system for self-care and self-help. It can address physical illness and emotional or mental disorders, and can also promote high-level wellness and peak performance. You heal the body by activating its natural healing energies; you also heal the body by restoring energies that have become weak, disturbed, or out of balance. By learning simple energy techniques to keep your energies balanced and humming, you can improve your health, sharpen your mind, and increase your joy and vitality. The current practice of medicine is based upon the Newtonian model of reality. This model is primarily a viewpoint that sees the world as an intricate mechanism. Doctors conceptualize the body as a type of grand machine that is controlled by the brain and peripheral nervous system: the ultimate biological computer. But are human beings really glorified machines? Or are they complex biological mechanisms which are in dynamic interplay with a series of interpenetrating vital energy fields Introducing a new viewpoint of healing that encompasses an evolving picture of matter as an expression of energy. This new field of healing, based upon the Einsteinium paradigm, is called Vibrational Medicine. Dr. Brown has worked in the area of veterinary medicine for over 40 years. She began her career as a qualified medical laboratory scientist working with veterinarians and scientists, first at the Veterinary College in Cambridge England, and later at the Ontario Veterinary College Guelph, Ontario, Canada. THE STING OF THE DARK TOWER – EPISODE 3 OF 3 (FANTASY) The writer C.S. Lewis is invited to visit a lab in 1940’s Cambridge England where he is shown a device called a “chronoscope” that does to time what a telescope does to space. The chronoscope shows strange images of a dark tower ruled by men with stingers on their foreheads. An accident with the machine results in minds being switched between Cambridge and the dark tower. In the present, a precocious teenager and her mysterious nanny explore and ultimately complete this work of fiction that was discovered after C.S. Lewis’s death. Voiced by professional actors and with an original score for classical saxophone quartet, The Sting of the Dark Tower will take you back in time, sideways in time, and perhaps get you to think about who are our own men with stingers. Almost everyone these days will agree that an organization's intellectual capital or knowledge assets are as important as its physical assets. The challenge of how to track organize and use knowledge assets however is easier said than done. How can companies tackle this challenge? Michael Lynch founder and CEO of Autonomy a company with offices in Cambridge England and San Francisco believes that his company's technology can help organizations extract meaning from reams of unstructured data. Autonomy even has a name for this process -- meaning-based computing. Lynch and Kevin Werbach a Wharton professor of legal studies and business ethics who has written extensively on this subject spoke with Knowledge at Wharton editor Mukul Pandya about these issues.
