Click here to try it out!Welcome back to Bad Dads Film Review, where this week we take the red pill and tumble down the rabbit hole into the genre-defining cyberpunk classic that is The Matrix (1999). Prepare for slow-mo shootouts, existential dread, and the most influential sunglasses in cinema history.Written and directed by the Wachowskis, The Matrix dropped like a black-leather-clad bomb on the sci-fi landscape in 1999 and changed the game forever. Keanu Reeves stars as Neo, a disillusioned computer hacker who learns that his reality is a simulated construct designed by sentient machines to subjugate humanity. Waking up to the "real world" — a dystopian nightmare where humans are harvested for energy — Neo is recruited by the mysterious Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) and the fiercely cool Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) to help fight back. The plot may be straight out of a philosophy seminar, but it's delivered with style, intensity, and more bullet-time than you can dodge. It turns out the dads still know kung fu. Revisiting The Matrix was a treat — we all had memories of our minds being blown by it the first time around, and it's still astonishing how well it holds up. While the sequels sparked debate, this original entry is tight, clever, and endlessly entertaining. A particular highlight was rediscovering how well the film balances its heady concepts with genuine emotion and momentum. We couldn't help but chuckle at the turn-of-the-millennium cool factor, but there's no denying that The Matrix still feels cool — and crucially, smart. It walks the line between popcorn blockbuster and brainy thriller with serious finesse. The Matrix remains one of the most influential films of the last 30 years. It changed action cinema, reshaped science fiction, and made philosophy sexy — all while kicking ass in slow motion. Whether you're here for the kung fu, the coding metaphors, or just to watch Agent Smith get punched in the face, there's always a reason to plug back in.

As he pieces together the truth, the movie cleverly plays with time, weaving a mystery that keeps you guessing—until it doesn't. With influences from The Last of Us and Memento, the film attempts something fresh in the zombie genre. But does it succeed?I break down the direction, pacing issues, and that so-called “plot twist” that you'll probably see coming. Welcome to Cyberpunk Cinema – the Definitive Dive into the Dark Future of Science Fiction. I am your host, Anthony La Pira, and I will be taking you on a cinematic journey through the sprawling cityscapes, the crippling datastorms, and the cybernetic implants that encompass all things Cyberpunk. In this week's episode, I will be breaking-down the 1999 cyberpunk landmark film The Matrix – written & directed by The Wachowskis; starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fisburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. When a beautiful stranger leads computer hacker Neo to a forbidding underworld, he discovers the shocking truth – the life he knows is the elaborate deception of an evil cyber-intelligence.The Matrix was the film that pushed cyberpunk cinema into the mainstream consciousness. It unleashed a wave of similar themed cyber films, three underwhelming sequels in the Series, as well as making the special effect of “bullet time” a household name. The film garnered critical acclaim, it won 4 Oscars, and made a boat-load of money and made the Wachowskis the most sought-after director duo in town. There was Before Matrix and After Matrix and it created the illusion that we all might be living in a simulation. The real question you want to know is this – What is the Matrix? So, do me a favor – it's time to access your cranial jacks, boot up your Ono-Sendai Cyberspace 7, and slap on your damn mirror-shades. Where were you that April if you weren't seeing Disturbia (2007) in theaters? It was the year of Shia, and a new creepy classic was emerging out of the mid-aughts. This flick is a quintessential millennial movie, an updated take on Hitchcock's Rear Window (though legally we should warn you that we're not speaking literally, because there's like legit drama there). It also shares a name with an iconic Rihanna song that'll get stuck in your head faster than you can ask, "What's wrong with me? Why do I feel like this?" AS USUAL, I BLAME CONFUCIUS. Judy and Linda wish they got a more down-to-earth storyline with the same characters from "Queen of Tears" (눈물의 여왕), the tvN drama, starring Kim JiWon and Kim SooHyun.   "Miss Night and Day" (낮과 밤이 다른 그녀) is the frontrunner for our next drama to cover. It stars Jung EunJi and Lee JungEun. It looks goofy, but it's the best we got right now. Please let us know what you guys are watching!     Digressions:   1:18 - Listener E-mails! 7:00 - Linda watched "Civil War", starring Kirsten Dunst, and found it thoroughly depressing as the premise becomes ever increasingly plausible.  9:12 - Judy started watching "The Acolyte", starring Lee JungJae, Amandla Stenberg, Manny Jacinto and Carrie-Anne Moss. The editing is a bit odd, but she is loving Lee JungJae's foray into mainstream entertainment. Click here to watch the "PingGyeGo" (핑계고) episode that we talk about! 12:27 - Linda was quickly bored by the second half of "Bridgerton" season 3. More of the same, you guys, more of the same. 14:12 - Judy and Robert were HOOKED on "X-Men '97". If you remember the original animated series from the 90s, you MUST watch. Click here to watch "Road to Avonlea" on GazeboTV! Nostalgia!!!     Some Korean terms: 검은 머리 짐승은 거두는 게 아니다: [geom-eun-meo-ri-jim-seung-eun-geo-doo-neun-geh-ah-ni-da] literally "One should not raise a black-haired animal"; a proverb warning against helping ungrateful people; unfortunately used to warn against adopting orphans.     Please send any questions, comments or suggestions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram (@kdramamyeyesout) or e-mail us (kdramamyeyesout(at)gmail.com).   You can become our patron at patreon.com/kdramamyeyesout for as little as $1 per month!     Download this and other episodes and while you're there, write us a review:   Apple Podcasts   Google Podcasts   Samsung Podcasts Spotify   Libsyn RSS   The KDMEO theme music is 'Relaxing Ballad', by Alexander Nakarada (www.creatorchords.com) Licensed under Creative Commons BY Attribution 4.0 License https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/

In the pilot episode of "The Acolyte," written and directed by Leslye Headland, the series kicks off with a tantalizing mystery hinted at by the ominous line from the trailer, “Someone is killing Jedi.” However, it quickly becomes apparent that this isn't a traditional whodunit. Instead, the central enigma revolves around the identity and motives of a Sith assassin. The episode sets a dark tone with its opening scene on the planet Ueda, featuring a dramatic bar fight where the Jedi Master Indara (played by Carrie-Anne Moss) is unexpectedly and swiftly killed by an assassin, raising questions about the killer's identity and motives. We are introduced to the main character, Osha Aniseya (Amandla Stenberg), a former Jedi turned mechanic. Osha's life is abruptly upended when she is accused of Master Indara's murder by her old friend, Jedi Knight Yord (Charlie Barnett), and his Padawan. Despite a witness identifying her as the murderer, Osha's involvement remains dubious.During a transport back to face justice, convicts on the ship stage an escape, leaving Osha stranded as the ship crash-lands on the planet Carlacc. Here, Osha experiences a dream in which her presumed dead twin sister, Mae, confesses to the murder. This revelation propels the narrative forward, suggesting that Mae is alive and entangled in a deeper conspiracy. The plot thickens as we meet new characters such as Master Sol (Lee Jung-Jae), Osha's former mentor, and Jecki (Dafne Keen), a Padawan. Sol and Yord eventually find Osha on Carlacc, but a climactic chase leads her to a precarious position reminiscent of "The Fugitive."Mae emerges as a central figure, seemingly allied with a con-artist named Qimir (Manny Jacinto). She seeks a weapon to carry out her mission to eliminate four Jedi, a plan that includes infiltrating a local Jedi Temple on the planet Olega twice. Her interactions with Master Torbin lead to his cryptic last words and subsequent suicide by poison. The narrative is interspersed with nods to classic "Star Wars" lines and themes, notably the iconic “I have a bad feeling about this.” As the Jedi devise a plan to trap Mae, the writing wavers with some inconsistencies and clichéd lines.Mae's mission remains shrouded in mystery, particularly her motivations and the significance of an event called Brendok from sixteen years ago. Despite believing her sister dead, Osha seems to have an uncanny insight into Mae's intentions, raising suspicions about their possible collusion. The episode concludes with Osha allowing Mae to escape during a confrontation, suggesting a complex relationship between the sisters. The next episode teases further intrigue as the story moves to the forest retreat of Kelnacca, a Wookiee Jedi and Mae's next target. The narrative leaves viewers questioning alliances and the true nature of the characters' intentions.

We're going into the matrix this week, in honor of Dan and Elliott's contributions to an upcoming episode of the very funny The Novelizers podcast, where comedy writers "novelize" part of a blockbuster movie from the past -- Dan wrote a "chapter" of the original The Matrix (read by our friend John Hodgman!), and he and Elliott appear on the episode playing characters who worked behind the scenes on the movie. Look for that soon, but in the meantime, enjoy this flashback discussion of The Matrix: Revolutions, our fourth-favorite Matrix movie.See us LIVE in July in Boston!Wikipedia page for The Matrix: RevolutionsRecommended in this episode:Hundreds of Beavers (2022)I Saw the TV Glow (2024)Regrouping (1976)Head to factormeals.com/flop50 and use code flop50 to get 50% off your first box plus 20% off your next month.

Why is The Matrix a big deal? Find out in this rerelease in honor of the movie's 25th anniversary.   Thanks to Jefferson Betmarik for making us pull 1999's The Matrix off our shelves and talk about it.  This movie was directed by the Wachowski siblings, and stars Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, and Carrie-Anne Moss among others.  Jim and I have watched this movie so much, and spent so much time talking about it over the years, so it's no surprise that we were able to easily fill 1:20 with our personal thoughts and observations.  What surprised is was how many new thoughts and ideas we had from our latest watch.  We had a lot of fun revisiting the movie, and I hope you get a kick out of listening. Thanks again, Jefferson!  If you'd like to find out how you can commission your very own podcast, check out our shop page for all the details.
